Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

Heads up to Cleve, Maddog, and Chris Jessee

The NCAA is no longer issuing warnings for players and "coaches" on the field -- it will be a five yard penalty.

We might need a $180,000 "Get Back!" coach.

We had a coach like that in high school. He just walked the sidelines yelling “BACK UP!”

Also, he would yell out for whatever special teams were needed. Apparently 4th and 18 isn’t enough signal for a 16 year old defensive lineman in remedial classes to know it’s time for the punt team to hit the field.

Damn. Did you read some of those rule changes?

If the kickoff goes out of bounds, the receiving team can take it on the 40.

No incidental facemasks, only 15 yarders.

You mean they weren’t all 15 yard penalties?

by Robert Killebrew on Feb 13, 2008 4:44 PM CST reply actions

Bogus that they are starting the clock after a play goes out of bounds. Any rule that takes away plays is a bad one.

I wonder if refs will only call facemasks that would have been 15 yards last year, or if they will call all the facemasks they used to, and make incidentals worth 15 yards.

Well, at least Kill is gone so our facemask penalties will drop drastically.

Actually, we might need a $440k Assistant Head Coach who is also the Get Back Coordinator.

15 yards for an incidental facemask seems like one of those rules that we see every year from the NCAA. Just a rule for the sake of making a rule.

With the five yarder, a defender accidentally grasps and clinches the facemask, realizes it and releases. With this rule, if you get a handful of facemask, and detect a yellow flash out of the corner of your eye, you might as well commence to ripping and twisting. It’s the same foul, so why not take advantage of your free oppurtunity to be an asshole.

That first picture of Cleve Bryant standing halfway to the numbers, arms extended and less than fifteen yards from a live ball is far more embarrassing than that poor dude who did or didn’t touch the ball.

During the Ohio State game in Austin you could easily find Tressel on the sideline. Not just because of the sweater vest, but because there was usually no more than three assistant coaches on the white paint. Then you’d scan over to our sideline and it looked like a group that had the same amount of control and discipline as a Pantera audience. The fact that they got a sideline warning even after that whole debacle in the Holiday Bowl is truly depressing.

The teeth gnashing over whether or not he touched the ball is hilarious. The fact that Mack was stalking between postgame interviewers proudly stating that Jesse didn’t touch the ball was amazing. Why should there be even a hint of humiliation when your travel coordinator/stepson is within a cuticle of touching a live ball?

It’d be interesting to see someone as fastidious as Huckleberry find out if any team had more sideline warnings than Texas over the last two seasons. I’m far too lazy.

Starting the clock on the ready after a play out of bounds pisses me off. Network executives will never stop tinkering with a game that continuously makes them billions. That drives me insane. It’s like watching someone pee on the altar.

Chooky: I read the rule as eliminating the 5-yard variety of facemask as a penalty.

From ESPN:

Another proposal would eliminate the 5-yard penalty for incidental face-mask contact. Redding said coaches and officials felt no penalty should be assessed if a player grabs and releases the face mask as long as it has no impact on the runner’s safety.

“It was a nonentity,” he said. “So we felt like the real issue is the grasping, pulling, turning, twisting of the face mask, and that will be retained and still carry a 15-yard penalty. But we felt the incidental contact was nothing, so we just decided to get rid of it.”

But this is Barking Carnival, after all, so I guess I should have let you gripe about it.

Chooky reads like Ralph Nader campaigns.

Whose feet are those 15 yards past Cleve Bryant?

My first instinct was that Robert Killebrew had sprinted 50 yards out of position.

by Huckleberry on Feb 14, 2008 12:51 PM CST reply actions

Pretty sure that’s McCoy.

Horn Brain. Thanks. But I’ll never forgive you for stealing my opportunity to complain.

Yes, it is horrible, this reading comprehension.

Ralph Nader sucks so bad that one of his eyes is trying to escape.

Now we want the officials to decide if it was or was not flagrant?
