Chiles + McCoy = Teh Win?

Greg Davis is now working on a package to get both Colt McCoy and John Chiles on the field at the same time.

Not sure why this wasn't worked on during the spring, but it seems to be a priority. Davis has been known to give his hand away by personnel. And by this I mean that all the chicks and international students watching know where the ball is going. Like the shovel pass to Bret Robin. Or the reverse to Tony Jeffery. Or last year when McCoy and Chiles were on the field at the same time.

When done right, it can be highly effective. When done wrong, nobody is fooled.

I wonder how Chiles will be used. Hopefully they’ll be creative like with Harvin or McFadden and use him as a slot-back and get direct snaps, run the zone-read, reverses, and screens.
It doesn’t seem like it should be too difficult to involve him. If Meyer could do this with Chris Leak as QB I should think we could do it with Colt.

Well it’s been a year and a half and they’re still working on it. You tell me.

Being sensitive to concerns about an over-abundance of negativity, I’ll simply say that’s a great photo.

$10 says Greg’s McCoy-Chiles package includes only one play, and it’s a rocket pitch to Vondrell to the short side of the field.

I would have gone with this:

colt mccoy and john chiles

I don’t care much for offseason workouts

I’m already a bada$$

Sailor,

Yours has that double bondage thing going for it, and it’s in black and white. Most appropriate!

by DBH on Aug 6, 2008 12:36 PM CDT reply actions

More symbolic.

by Sailor Ripley on Aug 6, 2008 12:39 PM CDT reply actions

More intense. No jive. A winning package.

by DBH on Aug 6, 2008 12:58 PM CDT reply actions

…and the Melton Package, which worked three times.

Colt says Davis is great at devising special packages.

Yawn, like clock work we here this every fall.

True believers (read: loyal fans) don’t yawn at promises of yet another double-secret package.

I yawn. In a way. In a way some people might call vomiting.

I still dont understand why Harris is not getting a shot at least the number 2 spot. Harris has great mobility and a better arm than Colt. What did he do to earn the third string treatment?

by Confused Fan on Aug 6, 2008 3:06 PM CDT reply actions

“Double secret package”-Nice.
Well, well, well. Looks like somebody forgot there’s a rule against two QB’s on Campus!

by Mysterious Package on Aug 6, 2008 3:14 PM CDT reply actions

1. Colt is the starter
2. Working on packages to get Colt and Chiles on teh field simultaneously (with a play that no doubt fools everybody except the international students)
3. Chiles will ONLY play QB
4. Harris is the #2 QB

Am I missing anything else from this trainwreck?

by pong on Aug 6, 2008 6:46 PM CDT reply actions

3. Chiles will ONLY play QB EXCEPT when he’s playing other things in the double-secret special package with Colt. Of course, Colt could also be playing other things, as well, such as WR or pulling guard. Opposing defensive coordinators shudder at the thought of this latter possibility.

4. Harris is the #3 QB.

So, you’re saying our offense this year depends on the creativity of Greg Davis? Oh dear God

by Ransom Stoddard on Aug 6, 2008 8:22 PM CDT reply actions

Relax, Ransom. Davis is one of the best in the business. Besides, defense wins championships. echeese says Davis’ offense has never cost a title. So, if we had a DC who could hold OU under zero and hold aTm to less than 7 points, we’d have a couple more conference championships. Thank God Mack recognizes this and changes DCs regularly.

If any of you had bothered to come watch our practice tonight, you would have seen my genius package in action….a bubble screen to Chiles.

That’s not a joke, either.

by Greg Davis on Aug 6, 2008 10:03 PM CDT reply actions

I saw John do great things with a bubble screen at Summit.

Of course, I’m guesssing OU will field a little better defense than Granbury did.

by Ag_in_TX on Aug 7, 2008 7:08 AM CDT reply actions

We can do a lot worse than throwing screens to Chiles. Such as throwing screens to the Quan, or Ogbonnaya.
I’m hoping we use Chiles in creative ways in the running game. i heard that in practice we ran some kind of triple-option (or fake triple-option) with Chiles as the pitch man (or distraction).

by RolloTamasi on Aug 7, 2008 8:31 AM CDT reply actions

UTEP will not be able to contain the Chiles bubble screen. If they can adjust, we have many other plays that take advantage of a an opponent with much inferior talent. Central Florida just came out to play that day, they could have beaten anyone that saturday.

Its like Iran and nukes. We’ve been denying practing it for years and have the public fooled. Then on Oct. 11th the whole world will witness…

by Mysterious Package on Aug 7, 2008 3:36 PM CDT reply actions

Chiles ran a Fly series last year.

Is this the triple option you’re referring to, Rollo?

by Beergut on Aug 8, 2008 8:02 AM CDT reply actions

Maybe. I don’t know what a fly series is but I don’t remember us doing this much last year.
This play, looks like a triple option but I suspect that it is called before hand whether it is a “dive” (probably more like an inside zone) or a pitch.
Chiles moves to the backfield in the shotgun and Colt hands off to a bigger back (Ogbonnaya or Cody Johnson) and then sprints out the other way and pitches to Chiles.

by RolloTamasi on Aug 8, 2008 8:13 AM CDT reply actions

Okay, that isn’t the Fly.

Are Ogbonnaya and Chiles split behind Colt in the shotgun ala Goodson and Lane?

Are they running a read-read option? First read is zone read, second read is option, pitch or keep after you’ve pulled from zone read and are attacking next defender after DE (usually a LB or CB)?

by Beergut on Aug 8, 2008 8:33 AM CDT reply actions

It’s like the Aggy Triple option. 1st, John Chiles comes in motion from the slot. (When Chiles is QB we did the same thing with other receivers so I think this is going to become a part of our running game).
2nd, Chiles is on McCoy’s left and the bigger back is on his right.
I’m not sure if it is a zone-read because it looked like it might have been pre-planned whether Colt hands to the inside option.
3rd, Colt runs the typical option with Chiles against the LB/DB.
So yeah, it’s a triple option (assuming the dive or option run-outs are resulting from reads and not called).
What is the fly out of curiosity?

by RolloTamasi on Aug 8, 2008 8:45 AM CDT reply actions

It seems to me that it is actually quite simple to play Chiles and Colt at the same time so long as Colt is the QB. Just line Chiles up at TB or WR and run the normal plays. chiles said he already learned (as part of the QB job) all the plays and the responsibilities/routes for the RBs and WRs.

From the already existing play book, you can simply pick a few plays that seems to be best exploit Chiles’ capabilities and practise them with Chiles before running them in the real game.

Chiles is 215 pounds and runs a sub 4.4 40. He is said to have good hands. Beef up the horns short passing game by getting him the ball in space with screens and dump passes. Use him on end arounds and fake end arounds. Have him throw the halfback pass every now and then. Try to run plays where he tends to get tackled by DBs rather than LBs and the DL.
