My visit to Aggieland
I travelled to College Station on Saturday to watch the Aggies take on Miami. Because of my preseason Aggie preview, my popularity is second only to that of Jackie Sherrill's in Aggieland.
The Aggies provided me with the finest of accomodations.

A sumptuous buffet was set before me.

They came from near and far hoping to get a glimpse of me.

Then the Aggies danced for my entertainment.

It's good to be the King.

It’s good to be the King.
I’m pretty sure I once penned a zippy line that would astutely summarize the perspective of the King of the Aggies.

You can almost feel the self loathing in the stadium.

I just have one question. Why?

HL Mencken was once asked why he remained in America if he found so much of it unworthy of reverence.
He replied, “Why do men go to zoos?”

Fair enough. At least that zoo had food and air conditioning.

I asked around (too many Aggie relatives and friends). They don’t really hate Sherrill as much as I thought they did, or rather should. Go figure.
by blon on Sep 23, 2008 7:15 PM CDT reply actions
I shouldn’t have said hate. Too strong a word. I was surprised that they aren’t as disappointed in the man as I would be if he had been the coach at Texas.

I would just have a problem with the issues he brought to the A&M program with the NCAA. It was a shame. A&M has a good program and people still associate Sherrill/A&M/cheating. That’s too bad. A&M deserved better.

"You can almost feel the self loathing in the stadium."
The one thing I could always say about A&M was that they never took their anger about losing out on the players. That was one of things I respected most about A&M. They tend to give their coaches heck, but the players were off-limits. As it should be. Texas was never that gracious (I’m a UT grad). That seems to have changed, starting last year.

Figures. Some teasip in a Zone Club box and me out in the elements. Well at least the Prarie View Marching Band provided some needed entertainment. Our defense is horrible only underwhelmed by our offensive line.We might not be able to beat you guys this year (unless Greg can give us some help). ;)

blon- I hope that whatever or whoever made you think that UT fans put too much negative heat on its players continues to change for the better, and I hope that most UT fans share the sentiment that everything that is right with our team is thanks to the players, and everything that is wrong with our team is because of the coaches. That’s the unfortunate part of being a coach.
by TWC on Sep 24, 2008 12:47 PM CDT reply actions
I think that because I knew some of the players when I was in school. It could get ugly at times. I agree: I do hope it has changed. The players deserve better.
As far as the coaches go, they get paid huge salaries to take the pressure. That’s the profession they choose, and they have to deal with the criticism.

I’m suprised you guys could see the field from way up there through the thick cloud of apathy hanging over the stadium.

I applaud your prudent decision to take in this past Saturday’s football match from the comfort and security of an executive suite. Mingling with the seedy riff-raff seated in the economy sections of the stadium is not advised. Their grubby hands, nachoed cheeses and plastic-cupped American beers are apt to stain a gentleman’s standard white silken football cummerbund.

My only consilation is that whatever idiot that pays for that box is shelling out a whole lot more than me to see this pitiful example of football.

Please remember that the players are in a transition year- new coaching staff, new defense, new offense. Sherman needs to build his program. I hope that the A&M faithful will give him some time and the players the respect and support that they deserve.

I really, really hope the Ags understand Sherman’s situation and give him adequate time to turn it around. Five years should do it.
by TaylorTRoom on Sep 24, 2008 7:15 PM CDT reply actions
Ags have been turning on our own players, in particular our QBs and seniors, for at least a decade. Corey Pullig left A&M really irritated with our fanbase, Antoine Wright hated A&M, most A&M players in the NFL say their high school’s name when they are on the national evening games.
We eat our own as well. We call each other 2%ers, the corps hates everybody, and the campus itself is pretty quick to judge and slow to forgive.
On the other hand, whatever hell Sherman and the players get this season is being duly earned. Baylor fielded better teams under Guy Morriss.

Objective Ag,
I wondered about that when Johnny Jolly did his intro in the Dallas-GB game.

Maybe this would help to explain why so many athletes end up hating the A&M experience. I found it very informative. It is from a poster named “slug” on Shaggybevo. It is his response to the issue of racist, anti-obama t-shirts at A&M. I believe that he is an Ag.
What’s wrong with being a little bit racist? Aren’t we all supposed be supporters of traditional values. And if being racist at A&M is not one of those glorified traditions, then I do not know what is. With all this modern ghey ass, P.C., bullshat, hippie crap floating around these days, it is just refreshing as hell to see a group of people who are racist and not afraid to show it. After all, deep down inside we are all still racists. Just go to a few churches to see if they are not invariably divided along racial lines. And if we are what we are, then why the hell do we go to such lengths and trouble to hide it. And if black athletes don’t like it, f*ck them. They can just go to a school for colored folk. And if it hurts our football program, f*ck that too. F*ck football. I would rather go to an all white school than have a good basketball or football team. Anyway, BYU seems to be doing just fine with good ‘ole honky, white boy players. So if worse comes to worse, we can just go and import Mormons, or we can just start f*cking the hell out of our sisters and mamas to produce football players who will represent, like Wes Welker, from the ground up. And if that doesn’t work, hell, there is always swimming, extreme sports, Nascar racing, and lacrosse. So who the hell needs black folk. Jungle jumping athletics is all they are good for anyway. Let them stick to their own kind and stay away from our white women.

Oh, and by the way, I have seen the Ags play this year and I agree that they are the suck, but this notion that all this sucking is just due to a lack of players is all sort of a cop out and a reflection of the Ags not wanting to face the real underlying hard truth. Sherman and his gang are just doing a piss poor job of coaching and working with what they have on hand.
The Ags clearly are not the worse talented team in the B12, not by a long shot, but, as of yet, they certainly have been playing as if they were. A&M has talent. Even on their much maligned lines, you can see the talent there. Alot of the piss poor performance can be attributed to the change in offensive scheme, but, even still, the Ags, to me, are playing much worse then they ought to be, even given those considerations. Just goes to show you that Fran was not all that bad of a coach considering what he had to work with. And you all might also want to go and put the D back in Arnell, since he seemed to do a better job with that D then the current coordinator.
Not saying a coaching change was not in order, just saying that if Fran and his old regime were still there, the Ags would be looking a whole lot better than they are now. So far the signs do not look good for the Ags that Sherman is the one who is going to take the Aggies to the promise land and earned A&M that hard fought and elusive national respect in football Aggies, everywhere, so desire and crave. The odds are not looking good at all on that score.
The Ags just should have done the no brainer and hired Briles. In comparison, his club looks night and day better than it did a year ago, and he also installed a new system over there.

Exactly. But their myopic, rose-colored view of the status of their program no doubt made them think they could do better. Accordingly, instead of catching a coach on the rise, they went the safe route and will be safely ensconced in 5th place in the Big XII South for years to come.
