Washington coach Tyrone Willingham will be stepping down at the end of the year. And by 'stepping down' I mean they fired him.

"We didn't win enough football games. That's it," Willingham said. "Hopefully, we've done all the other things right, [and] it's a good strong program for someone to jump into and do things."

Other things? Winning isn't everything, Tyrone. It's the only thing.

ESPN is reporting that the candidates to replace him are likely to include fired Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin, Seattle Seahwaks assistant Jim Mora Jr, Gary Pinkel, Missouri OC Dave Christiansen, Boise St coach Chris Petersen and Will Muschamp.

Washington athletic director Scott Woodward worked at LSU at the same time as Muschamp.

Why would Mora Jr. be listed? He has already been named head coach of the Seahawks for next season.

Good question.

I thought he’d be a much better HC than he has turned out to be. Too bad.

One of the litany of reasons Mora was fired from the Falcons was that he told a radio station that he’d leave a head coaching job immediately to take the UW job.

Willingham’s headed to Tennesse.

When you don’t win football games you can end up with a losing record. I think that’s what happened to Ty Willingham.

Willingham was great at Stanford. Who else can win two p10 championships with that outfit????

p beat me to the punch on Willingham’s record at Stanford. He did a good job there. Overall, I think his tenure at UW was a failure mostly due to the youth of his team, and the injuries they had at key positions.

willingham was a failure at ND and at Wash because he is inept. bottom line. he is a coach that routinely throws his players under the bus and plays golf more times a year than number of recruiting trips he makes. he is the worst recruiter in major college football. and don’t give me that crap about brady quinn and his class of stars. do a little research and find out how they ended up there. willingham was a cancer at ND that never bought into what the school or the program are about and was just too much of a failure to ever make anything happen at Wash. at ND at least the name would recruit itself (Zibikowski for one).
