The Big 12 South and the BCS
Looks like the computers love the Big 12 South. 40% of the BCS Top Ten are from the Big 12 South. Basically, the 5th best team in the Big 12 will have a home game for the Conference championship.
2. Texas Tech
4. Texas
6. Oklahoma
9. Oklahoma State
14. Missouri

To use another sports analogy: we’re in the Clubhouse waiting to see how the guys with a one shot lead finish the back 9.
The way I see it, the winner of Bama – Florida is in the champ game. If PSU is undefeated, they’re in. If, somehow, God willing, they lose, then the Big 12 champ is getting in.
Right now though, I am going to be an unabashed fan of OSU and OU. GO SOONERS AND FIGHTING T-BOONEs!!

Does this mean that the Big 12 South is better than the SEC?

Absolutely not, HJ. And Stafford just had a bad day, but he’s gonna be GREAT in the pros!

Re: 5th best team in Big 12 playing at home for Big 12 title.
I understand that holding this event allows Dr. Pepper to pour money into the conference thereby ensuring Iowa St. can continue participating in Div 1 athletics, but has any good ever come of that game, at least from the perspective of putting a Big 12 team in the national title game? Some team from the Big 12 South, possibly ranked in the Top 2 of the BCS, may play Mizzou in a Kansas City blizzard this December.
Meanwhile, Penn St and USC get to stroll across the finish line.

Teams victimized by the Big 12 Championship Game:
’96: #3 Nebraska
’98: #2 K-State
’01: #3 Texas
’03: #1 Oklahoma, and by extension Texas (got left out of BCS altogether) and LSU (who had to play OU anyways and then see their MNC split by the AP)
’07: #1 Missou

I understand the point about the championship game, but I’m always amused by those who just arbitrarily assign the game zero value. You seem to miss the forest for the trees at times. The point of college football is to play exciting football games. The Big 12 championship is almost always a great event. Yes, at times it means that teams that would have played in another really great event have had to play in a lesser event later. But, of course, there are two sides to that coin. In most of the above examples, teams that would have played in a fun event then get to play in a much more exciting event.

Text ‘GC’ to anyone in your address book to nominate Gene Claude for the Pontiac ‘Catch the Excitement’ post of the day!
The game isn’t being assigned a zero value – it’s just a skewed value due to the inevitable mismatch – but it is interesting that the 5th best team in the Big 12 gets a shot at the title on home turf.
Mizzou could back its way into a BCS bowl with an upset in KC. Stranger shit has happened.
