The Eel's Encore

He's baaaaaaack.

Bill Snyder, turnaround artiste and author of Get Thee To A JUCO: Winning The Moray Eel Way is back holding the reins at KSU. Bill Snyder is 69 years old. He was signed to a five year contract, which proves that 70 is the new 67. Clearly, the ability to sleep through the night without peeing or consistently locating your car keys is irrelevant to program-building.

Somewhere Bill Byrne just rejoiced. He now has the second least dynamic coach in the Big 12.

Hell, if Joe Pa can coach at age 102, why can’t Snyder come back at only 69? Since he only recruits JUCOs anyway, he doesn’t have to convince recruits that he is there for the long term.
Seriously, Bill, is the money worth destroying your remaining legacy?

And former Oklahoma OC Chuck Long got fired at San Diego State. Snyder was the OC at Iowa when Long was there.

Chuck Long and Greg Davis should go coach at the same school and see who can waste more talent.

“Clearly, the ability to sleep through the night without peeing or consistently locating your car keys is irrelevant to program-building.”

Uhh….. that starts long before 70. Or 67.

But that aside, what a really, really bad idea.
But a great opportunity for all the boys at unknown Midwest community colleges with no future.

So, Patterson didn’t want the job?

Am I nuts (don’t answer that), or did anyone else realize that Ron Prince was black. I read an article opining on how we are now down to only 4 black coaches in Division I since Ty Willingham and Ron Prince were canned. I literally had no idea that he was black. I just thought he was a sucky coach like all the losing white coaches also getting fired this year.

I think my inability to distinguish Prince’s blackness from any other coach says something about the debate as a whole. It also raises the question — How black do you have to be to be considered black by the sportswriters bitching about the lack of black coaches? If we found out that Steve Spurrier had a black great grandmother, would that instantly increase the number of black coaches in Division 1. I am certain that Div I is not dominated by pure-bred white aryans. Maybe we should do some research on the family trees of all Div I coaches. Someone obviously did so with Prince; otherwise, we would have not know. Maybe we should have only lost 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 of a black coach when he was fired?

I don’t care what color a guy is if he is a good coach. Look at Tony Dungy — he’s THE MAN, and I’d carry his water bottle any day. Don’t the ESPN & Yahoo Sports writers have anything better to write about?

Articles like these only serve to stir-up anger among black folks by stoking the dying embers of racism hoping to create a fire where none exists, and we just don’t need that now. If you doubt that racism is dying, I need only direct you to our most recent presidential election. Why don’t we ever hear about the success stories in race relations in the NCAA? What better place to point to than the multi-racial make-up of all NCAA teams as an example of racial harmony. Black, white, Mexican, Asian, you name it, all playing together as teams and as friends. That is who we really are as a country and in the NCAA, and the hacks printing embellished stories of conspiracy to “keep a brother down” are the true bad guys.

Does anyone really believe, with the amazing revenues that winning football teams bring to Div I football schools, that there are Div I AD’s in cahoots to keep good black coaches from ascending to the helm. The smartest thing an AD could do is to find the best candidate and hire him regardless of race.

I, for one, am growing weary of those who seek to divide and compartmentalize us based on skin color. I was content with not knowing that Ron Prince was black — or white for that matter. It makes zero difference. It is only an issue now because someone pointed it out to make a point not worth making. Shame on them.
