Mr. College Football Backs Texas
Tony Barnhart, the longtime college football columnist for the Atlanta-Journal Constitution is considered one of the most influential voices in the media on the sport. He is easing his way out of the AJC and working more and more for TV. As far as Texas fans are concerned, he buried the lead today in the middle of his column. Tony casually mentions that if OU beats Florida and Texas beats Ohio State then AP should name Texas its National Champion.

Is this how USC got the first of its most recent titles? Same year as LSU?
by Sailor Ripley on Dec 8, 2008 10:58 AM CST reply actions
USC was the AP MNC. LSU got the BCS hardware.

I may be in the minority, but I’d rather OU lose and us finish second without the AP title. I dont like what another MNC could do for OU’s recruiting. They’ve been somewhat down in that regard, and I want to tighten our hold on Texas kids.

Anyone who pulls for OU to win should lose their right to call themselves a Texan.
I hope Tebow uses his anger in being overlooked for the Heisman repeat in favor of McCoy to drive his Gators to pummel the Sooners.

If you could absolutely, 100% guarantee me that we’d split the title with OU if they beat Florida, then I’d pull for them to win.
But you can’t, so fuck off. Go Gators.

Even if you could absolutely, 100% guarantee me that we’d split the title with OU if they beat Florida, I still could not cheer for them. I learned my lesson in 2003, nothing good ever comes from cheering for OU.

There’s only one real solution. We beat the hell out of OSU and run it up. I’m talking 70-3, to prove that OU isn’t the only team that can score 60 (on lesser teams). Regardless of who wins the BCS, I think that might get the AP’s attention.

You’re beating your heads against the wall. It’s politics and Golf Pricks always win that game.
by dedfischer on Dec 8, 2008 12:43 PM CST reply actions
I’m perfectly fine with the season we had. Our serious run was always going to be next year.
So fuck OU and I hope UF scores 60.
by ChrisApplewhite on Dec 8, 2008 1:35 PM CST reply actions
The AP national title is a consolation prize. Who gives a fuck. Run it up on OU and start preparing for next year.
I am praying Sam Bradford returns so we can beat ‘em again next year and they won’t have anything to bitch about.

I agree: Screw OU. I hope Florida WINS by 60. 77 to 17 sounds nice.
by ATXHornsFan on Dec 8, 2008 3:39 PM CST reply actions
This is tiresome.
We wound up here because of defense, defense, defense in the SEC. The league has five of the top 15 teams nationally in scoring defense, five of the top 15 in total defense and five of the top 17 in rushing defense.

I wanna be cool with my quotes like SR. How do we italicize?

Sorry BIH
If we told you, we would have to kill you.

I’ll take a Heisman Trophy and a massive chip on the shoulder for the Fiesta Bowl and the 2009 season.
Go Gators.
by Levander Williams on Dec 8, 2008 3:59 PM CST reply actions
Ripley. Numbers like this is how they have those Top 15 defenses. Here are how the offenses rank on Florida’s schedule this year:
Hawaii #68
Miami #47
Tennessee #111
Ole Miss #32
Arkansas #91
LSU #36
Kentucky #88
Georgia #29
Vandy #104
S. Car #92
Citadel – not even ranked
FSU #27
Alabama #30
We teams in the Big 12 South have to play better offenses in just our division than what’s on Florida’s entire schedule.

I agree SR, it is tiresome. I think the collective ineptitude of SEC offenses has a lot to do with the defensive statistics.

Bob the italics tag is (emphasis) with normal close tag.
by Vasherized on Dec 8, 2008 4:17 PM CST reply actions
This is harder than I thought. Instead of its the letters em inside the tags.

Look, unless we are holding the Crystal Football and that sumbitch is in our Trophy Case, we didn’t win the National Championship.
I don’t care what the AP says.
Seriously, are we going to put a fucking Newspaper in our Trophy Case? How would that even work?
by Hippie Killer on Dec 8, 2008 4:50 PM CST reply actions
Maybe they award a trophy. But, we are (The Team) playing for the BCS Crystal Football.
The AP Trophy would be like putting a dress on a pig and then being proud that you have a date.
I’ll take an OU Face Raping, and a pissed off Longhorn Team for 2009 instead.
by Hippie Killer on Dec 8, 2008 5:01 PM CST reply actions
Let everyone in the country talk about how the whole entire Big 12 is just offense and nobody plays any defense and anyone in the SEC would shut down any Big 12 team. I can handle this for an entire offseason, no problem — JUST SO LONG AS OU LOSES BY ONE POINT OR MORE. Sooners with crystal football would hurt.
Horns pasting buckeyes (21 or more) would also be great…

Why do so many of you discount the AP national title as some sort of second rate consolation prize? If you’ve been watching college football for more than just the past 10 years you would know that the AP is the most traditional, storied national title in the history of college football. If we were awarded an AP NC, you can be darn sure I’d take it and be every bit as proud as if we won the BCS version.
It’s actually a very good thing that the AP still does award a NC because it is exactly this type of year where there is such a need for a counter argument against the BCSham.
What I don’t get is those of you who, on the one hand, bitch and moan about how bogus and unfair the BCS is, but yet consider it the only legit championship out there. That’s exactly what the slimeballs at the BCS and Fox WANT you to believe.
And yes, the AP has always awarded a trophy to its champions, and it’s every bit as majestic and beautiful as the other one!

If Bob Stoops and Barry Switzer had sex what would their offspring look like?

If we win the AP poll, I hope our team looks happier than the U$C players in that photo.
by Current Student on Dec 9, 2008 3:43 AM CST reply actions
USC was number one in both human polls going into the bowls the year they won the AP split title. We are already behind OU in the AP poll and the voters sure as hell aren’t going to jump us ahead of them if they beat Florida.
by longhornmatt on Dec 9, 2008 4:56 AM CST reply actions
Not to beat a dead horse, but we are a part of the BCS and we are playing for a BCS Trophy, not the AP Trophy. So…that’s why the AP Trophy Sucks and the BCS Crystal Football is what we want.
by Hippie Killer on Dec 9, 2008 9:12 AM CST reply actions
I would rather sit through the disturbing love fest of hearing old white men gush over Tim Tebow than witness that smug smile on Stoop’s face. Hopefully FOX won’t show any dongs in the locker room during the telecast.
