Tom Penders, Coogs, Step Into Controversy
Arizona tripped up Houston 96-90 in overtime Saturday, and the Cougars blew a double-digit lead on the road. Tom Penders team was up 63-51 midway through the 2nd half when Aubrey Coleman decided to use Arizona's Chase Budinger's face as a throw rug.
Even after the flareup, Houston led by three with less than 30 seconds left in regulation. 'Zona had to foul, and they picked Kelvin Lewis, an 84% shooter from the free throw line for the year. Naturally he missed both. The Wildcats hit a 3-pointer to send it into overtime, where Houston went 0-10 from the field.
Karma's a Bitch.

I heard that Tom talked to him about this over drinks at the club.

I think Penders should be supended from coaching and the idiot player should never be able to walk onto another basketball copurt anywhere anytime, The guy is a punk and thug and Penders is no better.

Reading Sunday’s Chronicle you would never guess there was the slightest hint of controversy; according to Houston’s paper of record, the Cougar lost his balance and slightly touched the Arizona player. At that point he was unfairly tossed from the game, which contributed to the Cougar’s loss. Seriously.

Houston is an odd sports town.
I was there not long ago driving through to see the Horns play Michigan St and there was a sports radio guy talking UH athletics for a good 45 minutes.
That’s like driving through Austin and hearing 45 minutes on St. Edwards.

If it was Saturday and especially if UH played that day, you may have caught a Cougars specific radio show.

Cheer up, Tom. Reloading just got easier.
You can recruit 7th graders now. Does Nic Wise have a pre-pubescent brother we should be talking to?
Josh Pastner is coming to a middle school near you! And your 14 year old kid.

I agree that Houston is an odd sports town. UT and the Cowboys are basically the biggest sports entities within the state and they’re basically persona non grata in Houston. Look, I am from Houston and live in Houston and I know this is a common fact. Of course, that last sentence is a picture perfect example of why Houston is a weird sports city. No one within the city not affiliated with UT in some way wants to admit that. The sports writers and commentators go out of their way to cover UH and Rice. Understandably, they do their part in talking Astros, Texans, and Rockets as well. What makes it really odd and annoying is their desire to aggressively ignore UT and Cowboy related sports talk. As a Texas fan and Cowboy loather, I am pleased and displeased with that reality.
Matt Jackson on 610 am is a huge UH homer, unbelievably. I like him for the most part because he’s at least honest in his thoughts and emotions, but he’s big on the absurdity of pushing a UH agenda.
This city is fortunate, however, to have one of the best local sports guys in the world in Charlie Pullilo (sic?). He is extremely intelligent and can speak on almost any sport or team in an informed manner. He’s practical and allows uncensored back and forth with his callers. He’s not pro-anyone but covers all state-related items according to marketshare, which means he talks Texas basketball down here when no one else does, as a for instance. I travel plenty and don’t know anyone close to the guy. I was in Dallas on Friday and they may the worst sports radio I have ever heard in my life. It annoys me with every visit.
In regard to Tom Penders, it’s funny how he’s gone from talking about being the preeminent college basketball program in the state when he arrived at UH to talking about trying to make the NIT again this season. That guy deserves everything coming his way.

"I want to apologize to Chase Budinger for what happened," Coleman said. "I never meant to step on him. I have never been in an incident like this before, and I have nothing but respect for him as a great player. I love the game too much to do something like that intentionally. I want to say I am sorry from the bottom of my heart."
Hmmmm…

The Ticket in Dallas is the best ‘Sports/Entertainment’ radio station around. Moving to Houston has forced me to channel surf between three lame stations in hopes that a segment will be somewhat enjoyable. It usually is not. The mornings on 610 are a joke. 790 is alright and the color guy is no nonsense. 1560 is emulating the aforementioned Ticket, and is too young to have a strong voice yet. Rich Lord has yet to state a solid opinion on anything since I’ve been here. And yes, UT is an after thought at best. Cowboy lovers here be aware that all Houstonites are jealous of all your teams success and take great pride in your losses and off field turmoil. Kind of like Aggies to us.

Sports Jesus just nailed it. The Ticket is an acquired taste, kind of like Barking Carnival.
Palilo (sp?) does know his shit but any show that is caller driven is going to be filled with stupidity. He spends the majority of his time answering moronic questions from Houston callers. That’s a show format problem.
What they hell is on that guy’s neck^^^^? Did Frank Beamer pull a Thomas Jefferson?

College football gets good squawk time here. College basketball gets almost none. Because of Rice and UH, college baseball might get more time over the course of a season.
The Texans get absurdly too much considering the depth of the discussion, which is shallow at best.
Frankly, I don’t listen to local squawk that much anymore.

Nothing is worse than the collection of local sports radio we have here in the Austin area. I was hoping for improvement when the ESPN affiliate made some programming changes, but sadly that has not occurred. Combine that with the fact that the signal is about as strong as a 3rd graders HAM radio kit, and the finished product is less than desirable.
I never thought I would see the day that I would be thinking fondly of the Bucky and Erin era.

Yeah, I have lived in all 3 cities the past 10 years and regularly spend time in all 3 for business. I live in Houston now.
It goes, DFW>Houston>Austin with a pretty wide gap in between all three. I respect what 1560 is trying to do and just need to find the right mix of people.

The notion that The Ticket is anything but a shit sandwich cracks me up. I have never heard of anyone calling shit an acquired taste, but I guess there is something of a point there. That is the worst radio station of all those that I hear.
I am not a fan of 610. 790 with Pullilo and 1560 in the morning are fine. If you don’t like caller-oriented shows, I am not sure why you’d attempt listening to local sports radio. Again, here is where the absurdity of The Ticket comes in.

Truer words never spoken. You can blame the moronic GM they hired at 1300 a couple of years ago for the decline of an already soft sports radio market, or you can blame the morons who hired him in the first place. People couldn’t bail fast enough from that place.

CTJ – It sounds like a your fan of “serious” sports radio and “serious” sports discussions from “professional” broadcasters. And that is great. I personally can not stand that type of format, which is why I cannot stand ESPN, TV or Radio. To me, the Ticket is great fun and for the four + years I lived in Dallas it was fantastic to listen to at work and with my peers. I know that many of the sports opinions on there can be weak at times, but some of the most knowlegable people I have still yet to hear are on that station. Bob Sturm is a sports geek to the nth degree. Junior Miller is a great basketball mind. And even though they all pretty much hate UT and are OU apologists, I could care less because the product simply works. The ratings and awards do not lie. But hey, that’s me, and it’s probably why I enjoy places like BON and Barking Carnival. If I had to listen to Mad Dog everyday I just as soon pop some xanax, stay in bed and pray for a Magnum PI marathon.

The Ticket has given us over the years…
-speculation over how interested Donnie Nelson would be in signing Bigfoot to the Mavs
-Bits comparing the Jerry Jones/Chan Gailey relationship to the one in “Of Mice and Men”
-hilarious, profane interviews with Shaq
-the explanation that Jerry Jones’ sons (Jerry Jr. and Stephen) are forced to take turns wearing the ‘Rowdy’ mascot costume at games
If preferring the Ticket to traditional sports radio is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

As a UH student and fan, ’tis time for Tom to go.
ENOUGH with the crying game. Crying about ESPN, crying about lack of attendance and home court advantage at Hofheinz…then lay an egg at home tonight against UTEP. That’s certainly a way to drum up support!
Boring basketball, stupid shotchucking players who choke up freethriows against Arizona, and a program that has plateaued.
For a guy that likes to run and press, a 55 point outing in a seven point loss to a decent UTEP team at home isn’t what the doctor ordered.
As for H-town radio…they all suck. Has Rich Lord gotten off his Vince Young mancrush? I mean…I know his daughter goes to UT, but still…
