Cade McCrary Will Walk On

Garrett Gilbert's #1 target will be a preferred walk-on at Texas. Cade is a 6-3 180 pound WR with average speed, good football IQ, and exceptional hands. He was a legitimate 1-AA level recruit with offers from several schools and as a senior he racked up 84 catches for 1711 yards and 24 TDs in the Cavs arcade offense.
McCrary understands the spread and will make the catch. If he can fill out over the next three or four years, he can be a solid role player for us. When you can get those qualities without investing a scholarship, you're playing with house money.
The same mystique that allows us to dominate in-state recruiting with elites should allow us to tell a pretty compelling story to the Cade McCrary type athletes who are lower tier Division I or Division I-AA prospects and weighing whether to give Texas and big time college football a shot or play four years in the anonymity of the Southland conference. And it helps if their Dad coached at Texas.

SR, I can’t see your picture. May just be me, though.

n/m. Complaining about things makes them magically better.

with admissions in their current state, there aren’t many guys that will be able to do this. The ones that do will be guys who have their shit together.

Hmmm…spend 4 years at Sam Houston State, or 4 years pulling tail with your boy QB1 at the University of Texas, and still playing on the team. Not a hard decision.

from what i read about the kid, it sounds like he’d fit perfect with a coordinator who wants his receivers to simply catch the ball and immediately fall to the ground.
wait a minute…

It’s always an interesting debate for a high school athlete I think. I went to a pretty average 3A high school, and most of my buddies elected to take the shot to continue to play – Trinity (no scholie but good academics), TLC (no scholie and bad academics) and a couple of JUCOs (Ranger for baseball). One to North Texas just to discover they were dropping baseball, one to Miami Ohio for basketball who later came home to Trinity, and one to New Mexico State for football who stuck it out and had some success. Plus a half dozen or so to the service academies, but that’s another deal, especially for military brats.
Never really understood the choice for most of them though, when they could have joined me at UT (admission then was much more straightforward). I was content to take my shot, and when it didn’t work out know that I was in one of the best cities I would ever live in, getting an education that had tremendous value and generally having the time of my life.

I can immediately think of three receivers currently on scholarship who should be giving up their reps to this kid. Of course, I thought he’d a Baylor/TCU level player, so my talent evaluation skills may kind of be teh suck.

Maybe he can get the other receivers lined up correctly or something.

I thought this kid would haunt us at Tech for four years. I am glad to have him just to avoid that. Ask Kyle Shanahan if being the QB’s wing man is a bad job.

Brent: “You know, McCrary and Gilbert are roommates. I wonder if they drew that one up in their dorm room?”
(forced laughter from color guy)
Brent: “Yes indeed. Second down and 9…”

hot stove steve:
He won’t play special teams. Can’t.
Dunstan:
you nailed that perfectly.

I would walk on at UT, but I’m going to opt for art school in Chicago instead.

How’s his route running? Does he have a good work ethic combined with an incredible knowledge of the game?
by Stuck in MN on Apr 8, 2009 3:17 PM CDT reply actions
He looks like a heady guy, really has a head for the game. Not great speed, but really understands the offense…

He’s willing to go over the middle and make the tough catch.

He does the little things that are so important.

Awesome. I think he’ll probably out perform some of the highly touted WR’s that are due to arrive soon.
And after Colt and Shipley leave, we’ll get to hear about how Paden Kelley, GG and Mcrary all played HS together!

I can see him being kind of a Brian Carter type player for us.
Haha, just kidding. He will of course be just like Kyle Shanahan, Cosmo Palmeiri, and Justin McLemore.

“…WR with average speed…”
Oh, so he’s faster than a couple of the schollie WR recruits. Sweet.

Gilbert and McCrary are not roomates. His father was a coach, but retired many years ago.
