Irby won't play in 2009
Not a surprise, but tight end Blaine Irby will miss the 2009 season.
"With a knee dislocation like Blaine sustained, damage can occur to ligaments, nerves and arteries," Texas’ team orthopedic surgeon Carey Windler said. "Blaine sustained significant ligament damage as well as a major nerve injury. The trauma to his knee was dramatic, and he was very fortunate that no arterial injury occurred.

Damn. This is really sad for Blaine – I hope he can find his way back somehow for 2010.
It’s a good thing we got familiar with the 4-wide set last year. Unless DJ Grant or another of the blocking surfi step up, it looks like we’ll be relying on it again this year.
I like the idea of moving a bigger WR in and making him a flex/tight combo end. It would provide some more versatility with the same personnel sets and could create better mismatches depending on what the defense has on the field. Especially in a no-huddle pace.
Trouble is finding that 6-3 235 lb guy who has good hands, speed and can block. (No shit, Levander – how profound)
Anyone else on roster who’s potentially up for the part?

The only realistic option other than Grant is true freshman Matthews.

Yes. We were the #3 team in the nation and best in the B12 last year without Irby for the 2nd half (he was a major cog before). A player like him would be a huge contribution.

Just sad for the kid. However, watching the injury on TV I said “he might lose that leg” so its good to hear he can walk normally and lead a normal life, even if he has little chance of playing college football again.

“Does this matter to you guys?”
Even if he sucked, it would matter to us guys. If you are any kind of fan of sports or life in general it matters. There’s more to life than winning football games, contrary to what lots of sooner fans think.

Besides Grant, I’d like to see what Marshall can do. We’ve never really seen what he can do. Ex ER like Grant.

Easy, there. NDS was only talking football output.

“Does this matter to you guys?”
From a pure football perspective, I’m still pining for guys like Matt Nader, the various felons, lepers, and auction losses at DT, plus the clusterfuck of mishandling regarding the running back position, so yeah. I’m perfectly capable of getting worked up about not having Irby available.
Oh, and fuck Butch Davis for swooping in on Pianalto at the last second, too.

Sad for Blaine, but “power man” is right. I’d forgotten about Hills having that injury, and he came back and was 60 pounds heavier.
As for TE, I’m predicting Smith, Marshall and Grant as the top three. (Target’s on me: Fire away).
Mack loves experience, and Smith (fourth-year junior) has that, plus he’s dropped 25-35 pounds and has been working at the position for some months. He was just thrown in there last September. Marshall intrigues me; receiver’s skills, he’s added 30 pounds, another fourth-year junior. Grant might be kinda like Jermichael Finley was as a RS freshman in 2006 — third-down passing threat (and a damn good one).
