A picture is worth a thousand misleading words

There is a picture in today's online Tulsa World of OU's Auston English laying on Colt McCoy.

The captions says OU's Auston English (33) knocks Texas quarterback Colt McCoy into the grass during their football game in the Cotton Bowl.

It didn't happen last year because English never got close enough to McCoy (or anyone else for that matter) to knock him down.

It happened in 2007, and it was a late hit that should have been flagged.

Interesting that the newspaper would use a clear example of a late hit in a story without identifying it as such. And they can't plead ignorance because they know what happened on that play.

I guess they're taking their cues from the football and basketball teams. If you don't get called on it, you didn't do anything wrong.

The real crime on that play was the complete indifference of our lineman exhibited by not putting English’s head on a pike. I feel like we’re a bit angrier these days. Take the 15 yards, send a fucking message. I think I was watching this game with Scipio and were both appalled.

The entire state is based upon the concept of theft and deception. There is nothing redeeming about the entire lot of them when it comes to any part of their character makeup.

I titled a thread on Hornfans once “A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words”. It was of DD Lewis running directly in the opposite direction of the ball carrier against UH in 2000. The picture was so clear that he didn’t know what he was doing that it was almost comical. It was during the heat of the arguments between guys like me typing about what an idiot Reese was and pathetic his LB coaching was and the “Trust Mack/You’re Not a Coach!!!!” crowd. The post had no words in it, just a picture, and it was about 200 posts long in about an hour and then it was locked. Good times.

Try that today and it lasts 30 seconds, your name is purged from the roles, and a hit is put out on your mother.

Don’t e-mail the writer. He didn’t pick the picture or write the caption.

E-mail the editor, sports editor and any assistant editors you can find.

Don’t email anybody. It’s pissing in the wind.

Well, I agree with that. But if you want to e-mail, leave the writer alone…

Our O-line should at least have been angrier than Mack.

Wow. Of all the people who don’t get to say ridiculous shit like this, the Barkers sit at the top of the list. It’s no different than saying OU got “caught cheating” when they self-reported. Right, Chris?

Aside from that, it’s an Oklahoma newspaper. This should’ve told you that “serious journalism” would not be present.

That said, even I couldn’t believe that the refs didn’t call that. I got a very serious kick out of McCoy getting faceplanted, but I couldn’t believe that wasn’t called. I had an even harder time believing that somebody didn’t come over and absolutely fucking decapitate Auston English.

It’s alright, I’m sure the seven people that can read in Oklahoma got a kick out of the article, and the nineteen that can afford the newspaper got a real kick out of the picture.

There will not be anyone smiling in Oklahoma around three o’ clock on October, 17, 2009.

“Auston English laying on Colt McCoy.”

… lying on Colt McCoy.

sheesh.

Exactly, Dave. Grammar and word usage is important.

Auston English is lying on Colt.

Bob Stoops is getting used to laying eggs in Bowl Games.

This can’t be stressed enough. Everyone associated with that program from the fans on up is just iredeemable scum and the universe would greatly benefit from thier slow, agonizing demise.

Man am I glad football season’s back.

I really think the OU coaches tell the players to do that shit and act like they don’t hear the whistle. I wouldn’t doubt in practice that the coaches tell them something like “you could be hearing a whistle from the crowd so hit him anyway and if you get flagged we can live with it..” It pisses me off that Maguire defended it like he had any fucking clue what was really going through English’s head. It also pisses me off that the refs didn’t throw a flag, even if he really didn’t hear the whistle. It’s there job to protect the QB’s and keep the game clean.

At least Mack was visibly pissed off, but I can’t believe no one on the line stood up for McCoy and went ape shit. Before the year starts they need to show the O-line a clip of Kyle Turley’s rampage and what UW did to the Granger after a cheap shot.

In fairness, there’s a gray area between being aggressive and a late hit. Recently, I think the ref’s are being a little to quick with the flag when a player gets hit on the sideline. I know OU was flagged a couple times last year for hits on Colt running out of bounds and at least one of them was total BS. That’s just one example, but it seems like it happens in every game I watch.

My problem with it is you never know when the guy is going to let up and run out of bounds or try to cut back up the field. If the defender assumes he’s running out of bounds, he may let up a TD. If he defends the space and runs through the pursuit angle and the guy steps out of bounds at the last second because he knows he’s fucked, the defender often can’t let up in time (or has left his feet) and gets a 15 yarder.

I digress, fuck OU and I hope we triple team English on the first play of the game.

Just last night I was commenting to my brother that I’ve noticed myself getting upset all over again about the tiebreak travesty from last year and he said he noticed the same thing himself, that all over again we’re being reminded again of what happened and the sheer injustice of it all is just overwhelming. Colt lost the Heisman because of one play on which he wasn’t even on the damn field and the Sooners didn’t have to venture south of Dallas in their piece of the “tie” and we’re the ones who were being unreasonable in not accepting the “fair” tiebreak result.

(If I ever meet the guy who was holding up the “but… but… we’re Texas” sign at the CCG, I swear I’ll end up in jail when it’s done…)

In hindsight, the results of the respective bowl games were mollifying enough through the offseason, I guess, but now that football season is here again I think about getting screwed by the system and teased by the Sooner crowd (who would have been whining 10x as loud had it happened to them) and it makes me start muttering cursewords in every language of the world.

Bring it on, it’s finally football season.
