OU 0-1
Didn't see that coming.

Sam and his shoulder in happier times.
Sam Bradford seems like a really good kid and we hope he's ok.
I suspect a few Barkers will have some post-mortem thoughts on the Oklahoma Sooners squad in the next day or two (I'm looking at you CTJ).

Damn…I don’t think anybody really saw that coming. Except maybe BYU.

Without Gresham there isn’t a lot of talent on that offense.
Stoops doesn’t recruit spots 5-25 very well and it shows.

Sure thought the best OL Stoops has ever seen could offer Bradford and Porn Mustache Guy more protection than that.

Gosh, I hope the Okies don’t stop asking Sammy to sign their babies after this game.

And on a related note: Bomar released from the NY Giants

Sam, it’s going to be okay. This will be the only team you face all year comprised of bicycle riding, Bible reading, white boys that don’t swear or drink caffeine…
Get well soon and try not to think about the 42 M Stafford is guaranteed or the hot ass he is banging right now while he’s laughing at you and the best O-line in collegiate sports history.
PS- Please tell Jermaine that Vernon Davis says Hi !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would be upset about this due to the “always-root-for-your-conference” doctrine, but I learned last year never to root for OU. So fuck’em.

This had the makings of an upset. If Bradford doesn’t go down, then maybe OU wins and covers, but my gut was telling me that too many negative things were happening for OU prior to this game.

Would any Sooners like to argue my point that Sam Bradford is a total fucking moron?
Anyone?
by bateshorn on Sep 6, 2009 8:44 AM CDT reply actions
I won’t argue you, but I don’t think there’s any examples out there of a QB who came out early making it big. Maybe you can think of one that I can’t but QBs who come out early usually bust.
by NorthDallasSooner on Sep 6, 2009 11:04 AM CDT reply actions
Coming out early is not a good ideas for qb’s, even one as gifted and smart as Bradford. But with that O line….
by theclapper on Sep 6, 2009 11:27 AM CDT reply actions
Maybe in the old days you do not come out but now where a top 15 pick has 25 Million reasons to be a professional you absolutely come out. If you fail on the field you still set up your kids kids and that is what you work for.
For a coach to tell a top 15 pick to not go pro and financially be taken care of for life is irresponsible.
by atxhorn on Sep 6, 2009 12:23 PM CDT reply actions
Yeah! That!
$25 million minimum…….before you even get a chance to fail miserably or bust up your throwing shoulder with the “Greatest Bust of an Offensive Line” , The Chinless Wunderkind has evah seen!!
Read those OU players’ bios??? For half the O-line, the SID was too embarrassed to even put in a bio! Too damned funny!

Dumbass should have gone pro. That line sucks. Not sure why he believed Stoops’ bs that the line would be okay.
Oh, and their receivers suck almost as bad as their line.
by randywatson on Sep 6, 2009 2:49 PM CDT reply actions
i dont put one iota of blame on Bradford, for staying or getting pummeled into the turf.
simple fact: the OU o-line is awful, even more so than any of us thought they would be.
Crawford got to Sam just as he did, what, FIVE plays earlier, and got to Tom Landry Jones THREE plays later. Four OU o-linemen on one BYU D-lineman and a linebacker. That o-line missed that blitz another three times, putting Landry on his back two of those three times.
That OU line just cost them a national title chance, their starting QB his health (and Heisman hopes), and the respect and credibility for the OU coaches.
And i’m bummed because it wont be nearly the cathartic victory in Dallas as it was last year.

Staying in school worked out well for Leinart.
QB is such a crapshoot it really has nothing to do with coming out as a junior or senior. Juniors who come out are likely to be taken by terrible teams and end up getting labeled as busts when they really don’t have much support.
Vick and Young went to pro bowls, so you can hardly call them busts… Russell looks like he’s improving quite a bit. Rothlesberger, Bledsoe were pretty much unmitigated successes. Then you have guys like Maddox, Jeff George, Dilfer… these guys might not have lived up to their won lofty expectations but did have serviceable careers.
Sanchez looks pretty decent coming in. Stafford could be good. Bradford might have thought he’d be in a less competitive class coming out. Who knows. He proably should have gone.

Damage control quotes are already circulating….
“Those are not just necessarily for our team but those are two players who have great futures and we want to make sure their best interests is taken into consideration in what’s being done,” Wilson said. “So there’s no rush, there’s no judgments. We’re pursuing every resource that [Oklahoma head athletic trainer] Scott Anderson and our medical staff can present to those kids, their families and to Coach [Bob] Stoops.”

You gotta love NateHeupel – he says:
“If UT lost Colt McCoy and Jordan Shipley prior to the Red River Shootout, Mack Brown and UT would have an asterisk in the media guide before kickoff. "
and then promptly goes into a litany of excuses about how if only they’d had Gresham….
I guess, unlike last year, losing a tight end is a problem for a team that’s worthy of pointing out…. repeatedly.
It’s funny, for all the “whining” talk the okies dish out, the fact that we were missing Irby for the entire game sure got drowned out in the “ohmigod, Ryan ‘LT-Butkus-Nobis’ Reynolds went out, there is no greater disaster” wailing.

I’m all for Stoops-bashing, but it is hypocritical to criticize Stoops for convincing Bradford or Gresham to stay in school. He is doing what coaches do. Lest we forget that most recently Mack Brown tried to talk Vince into staying for another year, and so did Pete Carroll to Matt Sanchez, and both had a sure lock on NFL millions.
by Fried Rice on Sep 6, 2009 10:17 PM CDT reply actions
For what it’s worth, as much as I loathe Stoops, I don’t think he had anything to do with Bradford staying. From everything I’ve heard the kid has loved the Sooners forever. It’s tough to walk away from the dream of playing QB for your favorite school, not matter how much money you’re talking about. I bet all the college ass he gets isn’t too bad either.
Now Grisham and Williams…well…
Fried Rice I think the issue here isn’t that Stoops convinced them to stay, so much as it is that he has a habit of putting the needs of the program well before the needs of his players. When you’re talking about costing kids not only money but potentially long term healthiness, you’re crossing a line that;s going to irk some opponents’ fans. It should irk your own to be quite frank.

Mack never tried to talk Vince into returning.
There is one argument for Bradford returning this year- it’s possible that he may have felt returning for another year might help him have a successful NFL career, as opposed to maximizing guaranteed money (which entering the 2009 draft would have done).
There is no rational argument for Gresham returning. He would have been drafted in the 10 – 15 range in 2009, and a AA 2009 college campaign would have allowed him to be drafted in the 10 – 15 range in the 2010 draft.

Yep, the one thing you can be sure of when a Sooner starts talking about Mack Brown and whining is that they’re about to do their own whining.

“Mack never tried to talk to Vince into returning.”
Ok. I stand corrected. Maybe not Mack, but Greg Davis. Is that the same difference?
“Basically, you can get better all the time,” he added, and those words hung in the air for only a few moments before Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis confirmed them.
He noted Young had made a quantum leap in his decision-making abilities between last season and this one, but that there was another “huge jump” to be made in the near future.
“Quicker decisions, for one,” Davis said, reading off a laundry list he carried in his head. “He needs to get more comfortable in the pocket, he needs to work on his play-action, his ball-handling …”
Greg Davis saying that Vince still had much to learn from Greg Davis is disingenous at best. Coaches trying to get good players to stay is what coaches do, that’s all I’m trying say.
