College Basketball: Texas vs Pittsburgh open thread
Texas wins the 1987 Bluebonnet Bowl.
Then Curtis Martin runs for like 300 yards on one of Mackovic's defenses.
So tonight's game is about bragging rights in a totally different sport.

Varez Ward hurt his knee and was carried off on a stretcher in extended warm ups. Fuck the MAC
by The General on Nov 24, 2009 9:17 PM CST reply actions
Maybe it was a litter instead of a stretcher.

Goddamn I hate MAC football and ESPN.
We need Jerome Lane to break a backboard in warmups so we don’t miss any action.
Vasherized has predicted a 75-62 win. If we score 75 on Pitt, our offense is legit.

OMG, a college football game is taking the normal three and a half hours!! No way they could have prepared for that.
by Nordberg on Nov 24, 2009 9:27 PM CST reply actions
Texas is on pace for 90. I’m glad we’re missing it so we can watch a conference that is fixed.

If Western Mich scores a 5 pointer, that is a bad sign for our national title hopes.

Attaway to show the victory formation. Compelling.

Announcers already tongueing Dixon’s taint.

Dogus is playing some tough ottoman to man defense.
by HenryJames on Nov 24, 2009 9:37 PM CST reply actions
They showed a low angle shot of Ward’s injury. Stretcher? No. Litter? No. Gurney. Yes.
by sizzlechest on Nov 24, 2009 9:38 PM CST reply actions
Evidently these aren’t big east refs. That’s not a foul in any conference much less there.
Love the press early on.
by Trips Right on Nov 24, 2009 9:39 PM CST reply actions
McGee, the big man for Pitt, is right in Pitts sweet spot. Pity he’s already got two fouls.
What the hell kind of foul call is that on Johnson? These must be Patriot League officials.

Didn’t you see the horses? That was a travois.
What kind of name is Varez anyway? Comanche Indian.

Looks like Barnes is working the officials more tonight than last night.

Balbay is looking good. Did he end up with the start?

In ND football news, Jimmy showed up in a dark visor today and did not take his helmet off at any time while the media was around.

Man, this UT defense is one of the best I’ve ever seen at UT. Quick, long, and relentless. With our depth we really are going to wear down teams, especially those without a bench.
by Texoz on Nov 24, 2009 9:54 PM CST reply actions
Balbay is a lot of fun to watch.
We’re a much better defensive team than offensive. Yeah, I know, a Barnes team… but considering how young we are that’s pretty amazing.
by Nordberg on Nov 24, 2009 9:55 PM CST reply actions
Brown and Hamilton are better 3 point shooters than what they have shown..we need them hitting those 3’s.

Re: collapsed for Ward’s injury. It was odd looking. They played the tape and it didn’t look like his feet slipped at all on the floor. Maybe hyper-extension of the knee?
by Texoz on Nov 24, 2009 10:05 PM CST reply actions
When I say “odd” I mean that it looked like a normal jump & landing then his knee gives out.
by Texoz on Nov 24, 2009 10:06 PM CST reply actions
Relentless
This defense just wears you down. You can see it in Jamie Dixon’s eyes. He knows while his team is working this hard on offense in the 1st half, it will be even harder work in the 2nd half, and Pitt doesn’t have the stamina to withstand the pressure.
Since Dixon broke Texas’ heart as a player watching him get frustrated tonight would be just fine.
by srr50 on Nov 24, 2009 10:07 PM CST reply actions
ball, yep. He should take 3 shots. Spot up threes, put backs, and dime finishes. That’s it. Anything else and he’s stealing shots from better offensive players.
by Trips Right on Nov 24, 2009 10:07 PM CST reply actions
steve, exactly right. It’s our own version of forty minutes of hell.
by Trips Right on Nov 24, 2009 10:09 PM CST reply actions

Wow, some crap calls by the refs lately. Both sides.
by Texoz on Nov 24, 2009 10:12 PM CST reply actions

Weird lineup here for Barnes. Sure to invite a zone with balbay and mason on the floor.

by MerHorn on Nov 24, 2009 10:16 PM CST reply actions
Weird is a nice way to put it. That lineup could play 2 games and not score 50.

Why are Jason and Doug surprised? have they not watched Barnes over the years? They are asking for flow and plays to be run instead of iso and well…our base offense…

I think Wangmene touched the ball on offense as much as Avery Fucking Bradley. Hamilton was a ghost too.
Shot selection is atrocious right now. James has to know better by now.

“I feel like I’m stuck in 2008. WTF is Rick thinking?”
I’ve asked myself that question a lot over the years. I’m hoping this year will be different, but it isn’t starting out that way. So much for the notion that we can just overwhelm teams with talent and depth. Like Greg Davis’ running scheme, I guess we’re destined to be a work-in-progress.

When you trade continuity for waves of pressure defense, you can never afford to have 4 role players on the floor with J’Covan Brown for significant stretches. You simply can’t. And to make matters worse, we’re trying to run offense through James and Balbay when the court has been reduced to an area four or five feet outside the paint. These two have proven they can’t operate in that environment. It’s astounding.
by Trips Right on Nov 24, 2009 10:32 PM CST reply actions
I don’t think Barnes cares. Seriously. It’s like Greg Davis and the run game.

Texas is too good offensively to give Jordan Hamilton minutes? Good grief.
by Trips Right on Nov 24, 2009 10:38 PM CST reply actions

Rewound the foul on Balbay and that was ANOTHER horrible, horrible call. The defender stuck his arms out, which is why the defender then appeared to take a charge. Ref missed the fact that the defender basically grabbed Balbay so that he would flop.

how in the hell did that turn into an impressive performance?
- refs struggled
- FTs were bad
- effort was not always there
- Hamilton needs more minutes
- Bradley needs to be more assertive
- injuries might actually be a blessing in disguise for this team (hope Ward is ok though)
- good to see that foul trouble won’t be that big of an issue for this team, too much depth

“I disagree. We just rotate horrendously (like in the wrong direction and shit) on occasion and stagnate on offense because we don’t have a system and shit.”
I am talking about the end of the 1st half and beginning of 2nd up until the point where Pitt’s McGhee got fouled and had an and 1 to tie the game at 51. It was a real weak give up foul. From that point on, we were intense on both ends of the floor and dominated. We need to be like that all the time, fatigue is not a factor.
Balbay is legit, a lot of my aggie and sooner friends talk a lot of shit about him.
by dick on Nov 24, 2009 11:45 PM CST reply actions
Looking at the stat sheet a few things jump out.
- Pittman had 1 rebound
- We’ve played four games. In three of those games we’ve had FIVE guys score in double figures. In the fourth game we had FOUR players, with one more guy at 9pts.
- Balbay had 10 pts, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals and 1 turnover
by Texoz on Nov 24, 2009 11:51 PM CST reply actions
The team has known for some time that playing time will come on a day to day basis. With the depth we have, it is exactly what most of us on here have talked about leading up to the season. I want to see Hamilton get more minutes, I’m sure Barnes does too. But when you have a guy who is 1-6 from the floor, decides not to pass the ball into the block for Pittman (his man wasn’t attempting to deny the entry pass) and instead launch a 25 footer; well, that style of play should not be encouraged.
We have too many guys on this squad to make it a one man show. This isn’t the team we had when Durant was here, nor is Hamilton at the same level offensively as Durant was. I’ve maintained that we will go far if the guys buy into the idea of the team being more important than the individual. If Barnes allows Hamilton to pull that stunt, the other players might not continue to be so giving.
by EggNog on Nov 25, 2009 12:02 AM CST reply actions
how in the hell did that turn into an impressive performance?,/em>
Because defense is the constant.
We go through braindead periods — from both players and coaches on offense — but this team grinds opponents into dust. They don’t have anything left when it is crunch time in the 2nd half. No legs, no stamina, no strength. Pitt had open looks, but didn’t have enough left in the tank to square up and shoot.
This was a game that Texas has normally lost under Barnes — early season, no offensive flow, periods of indecision which leads to standing around. But that was on offense. At no time did we let up on defense. We might not have rotated smartly all the time, but everyone was moving and throwing their bodies around.
by srr50 on Nov 25, 2009 12:23 AM CST reply actions
After that game, there is about a 250% chance Balbay starts the next game. Defense, rebounding, defense, amazing passing, hustle, some more defense, and minimal turnovers and missed layups…oh yeah, and defense, are all things that Barnes values to the highest degree.
Hamilton and Williams are simply too good and Mason is simply too useless for the current minutes situation to be occurring.
Wangmene was absolutely horrible. He can’t catch the ball, fouls way too often and in dumb situations, doesn’t go after the ball, and has no offensive repertoire. So naturally he plays more minutes than his entire career.
I don’t care how many Goddamn fouls Pittman has in the game. When we are that stagnant we need his ass in there to give us some hope of scoring.
Imagine how much smarter Hamilton and Brown would play and how much more assertive Bradley would be if they didn’t think they would be pulled after one questionable shot or mistake.
We play great individual defense most of the time, but we still aren’t playing as a team. When the guys learn to play together and cover each others mistakes, we will be unbreakable on defense.
Overall in the tournament, we played two lackluster games (starting and finishing well in both, incidentally) and won by 25 and 16 respectively. Our lineups are already beginning to take shape, and guys like Brown, Bradley, Hamilton, and Balbay have shown they will be stars along side the established twosome in the frontcourt. I think all six of those guys could legitimately average double figures in scoring, and we will be very balanced in that regard (I.e. we won’t have one guy leading the team in scoring two nights in a row hardly ever).
by Blake Borron on Nov 25, 2009 12:39 AM CST reply actions
You can’t give guys especially freshmen minutes with no consequences or repercussions for their mistakes. When Durant was here he had to rely on the younger guys because he didn’t have the senior leadership that he has now. Hamilton was 2-7 tonight. He is not the messiah that Trips tries to make him out to be. He has had two 2-7 5 point games so far this season. Do you recall Durant having one game like that ? He simply is not a one and done type of player. He obviously has some skills but let’s stop with all this undue praise on the kid.
by ipowers on Nov 25, 2009 2:38 AM CST reply actions
In his first game against a competent opponent Durant went 7-19 including 1-8 from three point range against Michigan State in a 63-61 loss. Later he went 5-15 from the field including 0-4 from three point range against LSU in a 76-75 overtime win.
The difference was that Durant was allowed to keep putting up shots. With good reason, of course.

Wall and Cousins don’t have leashes; they play for Calipari.
As of now, I’m not sure how Self is going to treat Henry, but I’d expect him to get the yank on pretty short notice, given how he’s handled freshman in the past (i.e. Playing Stephen Vinson over Chalmers). But he let him play through a little more than I would have expected against Memphis, so it remains to be seen.

I kept expecting to see Carl Krauser bring the ball up the floor for Pitt. That cat was there for ever, atleast it felt that way.
Barnes-ball is very tough to watch. I fell asleep three seperate times watching.

What are the qualifications for entry into the Vivid open auditions. Just wonderin.

Couldn’t agree more, so I looked it up. Here are the scores for the last 10 minutes of the first four games:
UCI — 25-13
WC — 20-9
Iowa — 24-12
Pitt — 24-11
Second-half shooting: Pitt, at 11 of 30, 37 percent, is by far the best of the four opponents. The other three shot worse than 25 percent. Meanwhile, Texas shot 9 of 18 against WC, which was by far its worst. In the other games, UT shot 18 of 27 twice and 17 of 26 from the field last night. Against Iowa, they made all 17 of their two-point FGs in the second half.
Texas FT shooting has improved in the second half of each game, too, for whatever that’s worth. Pretty sure turnovers have gone down as well, but I don’t have an easy source on that.
For this season, anyway, the first half is going to be prologue.

I think we need change our expectation level for this team with respect to teams in years past. This isn’t about Pitt or Iowa, or about beating the Baylors or Oklahoma States in conference. It’s about competing at a final four level. It’s about beating Kansas, Kentucky, and Michigan State. That’s our measuring stick.
My point is, when you put Mason, Balbay, Wangmane, James, and Brown on the floor for extending periods of time in a non-conference game, and you happen to be held scoreless for a 5 minute stretch, you’re doing your team and your younger players a disservice. If Hamilton was pulled for not entering the basketball, then so be it. I have no problem with that. Coach him to do it and move on. If this thing escalates into a Barnesian pissing match as SkyMonkey has alluded to time and again, then that’s an issue. A talent like Hamilton needs some freedom to operate.

I agree, Trips. Barnes always thought he wanted to coach in the NBA… he wouldn’t last a month. The best players play because they have to. You can’t afford to bench them because you’re ticked at them.
I don’t want Hamilton to have his own wing in Barnes’s doghouse. Doesn’t help the team reach the goal.

Fuckballs…Ward is at least in the same building as Dogus in terms of pissing off the other team’s top ball handler, and we would have used him extensively on someone like Collins. This also means that we will see more of Dogus and Mason on the court at the same time, which is not good.

Williams has shown he deserves at least 8 minutes of play last night, he got zero.
Hamilton should get 20-25 right now. Barnes has done this every year, he will mentally erase talent.

Does anyone know if Gerry Hamilton is posting basketball thoughts anywhere?

Just looked on AAS Web site and didn’t see anything about Ward being out for the year.

Gerry posts on Inside Texas, the ESPN affiliated web site.
Also, they just hired a former graduate assistant under Barnes who is terrific. I think it’s ipowers, actually.

Durant was allowed to play through bad shooting nights for a few reasons. 1) That team was not as deep as this one, 2) Durant didn’t fuck up nearly as much as Hamilton and 3) He was entirely too talented offensively not to have on the floor. Like I said Hamilton is not on that level.

Damn Ipowers,
I like your post above and if SLX says your terrific then you are in my book…. You just got out of the Outhouse to the porch steps….. Welcome aboard. But no “bareback” shit though..

Matt Cumro is the guy writing basketball for IT and he is outstanding. Gerry Hamilton posts there often. If you want to pay a site that has Horns basketball coverage, IT is the place.
