Just 3 months ago I thought we might have permanently screwed the pooch with the Skyline program given the Christian Scott fiasco. What a turn of events.

We missed out on getting Corey Nelson though, contrary to internet belief he was in Austin with Mike Davis also.

The reason?

He was given a nametag that said, “Friend of Mike Davis”

Some people never learn

Chris Jones, Davis, and White wouldn’t suck. Cobbs and Phillips to defense. Terrell to that “TE, kind of” position.

by nordberg on Dec 13, 2009 3:21 PM CST reply actions

Don’t forget about Harris. He’s my pick to be the recruit no one is really thinking about as a difference maker who ends up being sneaky good.

I think Phillips could be REAL nice at db

We have been tearing it up with late recruting this year. It’s a nice change.

Saw this morning that Sumlin refused to talk with Cincy. That has to help with Jeffcoat, as Sumlin staying at UH seems optimal for us.

UT Wildcatter,

The name tag fiasco was with Darius White and Rashod Favors, not Davis and Nelson.

Trojan, supposedly.

“Closing with Jeffcoat, White and Hicks would cause my recruiting weinie to redline.”

I still do no see how there is any reason for optimism with White. Hicks is at best 50/50 and I would even say he is a lean to Ohio State, if only a slight lean.

We seem to be in a good position to get Jeffcoat. If I have to put money on how we finish we close with 22.

Suck it, Les…

by Blake Borron on Dec 13, 2009 11:07 PM CST reply actions

I guessed that based on the excessive question marks.

by bigdukesix on Dec 13, 2009 11:55 PM CST reply actions

I’m actually curious to see if anything has developed on that front. Auburn guys are saying they aren’t really pursuing him as much as they had in the past and I heard LSU has filled his spot.

by whoopspat on Dec 13, 2009 11:57 PM CST reply actions

So it seems everyone is in agreement that’s he going to USC. Tiger fans in two states are saying they’re out of it, while Trojan fans are saying that Seastrunk is theirs.*

BTW that sounds like an attempt to save face from AU and LSU fans. “We already filled his spot”. Uh huh.

*Contingent on McKnight leaving?

by bigdukesix on Dec 14, 2009 12:24 AM CST reply actions

USC has no problem going after a top 25 recruit in Texas. Would be nice to return the favor every once in a while.

by Mysterious Package on Dec 14, 2009 1:57 AM CST reply actions

Our athletics budget will not support coaches flying all over the country to recruit the latest hot recruit. We are better off having Tolly drive to places like Aledo.

by Pat Sajak on Dec 14, 2009 4:50 AM CST reply actions

Amazing. This recruiting cycle has provided us with two of the biggest plot twists I can remember. As a recruitnik it’s nice to have something to follow after May.

Lache is an interesting cat. He’s not going to Auburn because of Dyer. LSU is stocked, so his back up plan is USC? I don’t buy it. I think he pulls a Goodson and goes somewhere with immediate PT. Just a feeling.

Put Davis in the slot, and watch him wreck shit. I love this verbal. We actually can pull a kid from the dregs of DFW. Street cred baby.

by magnusbleuveigner on Dec 14, 2009 8:46 AM CST reply actions

Yes, a Skyline kid, the new Dallas Carter. Add D. White from Fort Worth Dunbar and throw in Darius Terrell from DeSoto and we have a whole lot of DFW flavor catching the ball.

Gerry Hamilton says Skyline is an amazing high school campus right now with their growth, they are throwing up temporary buildings all over the campus. And one has to love a pipeline that might start a whole D1 defense from seniors down to sophomores.

Skyline’s at 5,000 enrollment while Carter has dropped to 4A with around 1,400 students. Wow!!!

by UT wildcatter on Dec 14, 2009 10:03 AM CST reply actions

also magnus-

I won’t comment on Lache’s or his mom’s persuasions, but the kid has always wanted to be in the limelight, where is that with immdiate PT? USC and LSU are the 2 most likely destinations.

Oregon and Auburn were flavors of the month, Texas sure would put him on that platform.

And I know the staff’s feelings

by UT wildcatter on Dec 14, 2009 10:08 AM CST reply actions

As stupid as this sounds, I don’t think we’re totally out of it. I don’t think we’re still pursuing him, but I think we provide the best opportunity for him. I could see him coming back to us like Cobbs.

I might be totally off on that and am probably about to be subjected to heavy public ridiculing.

Oregon has shown that they would know what to do with him by the way. But he’s not going to be a duck. I don’t see USC giving him immediate PT, atleast meaningful.

by magnusbleuveigner on Dec 14, 2009 10:36 AM CST reply actions

Dude kind of screams “trouble” to me. He seems like the kind of kid we are likely to avoid. And personally, I think we’re a better program for it.

by ghostofagroundgame on Dec 14, 2009 10:40 AM CST reply actions

Yeah, but he can be the next Ramonce Taylor….uh oh, wait a minute….

by magnusbleuveigner on Dec 14, 2009 10:47 AM CST reply actions

Why does the one comment say Ohio St lean for Hicks. From what I gather just reading other sites, it seems we have a real shot at Hicks.

by rantanamo on Dec 14, 2009 10:52 AM CST reply actions

Magnus…

That makes two of us. I will say that I think this year’s recruiting strategy has worked to near perfection. It seems we have worked hard on the kids who we really feel we have a shot at (Hicks, Jeffcoat, etc…) and basically said “bye” to those who wanted to play around (D. White, Seastrunk, Cobbs…)

In the end, White and Cobbs, after getting wined and dined by whomever they wanted, all came calling…they called, not us. Mike Davis called us and we had long since forgotten about him. And I have a sneaking suspicion that very soon, Seastrunk is going to pick up that phone…

And if Mack tells him “no,” then I’m 100% behind it. Tell him to go look for fame somewhere else, I don’t care.

We’re Texas. And we seem to recruit with that motto and philosophy in mind. If you don’t want us…“bye.”

by Orangeblood79 on Dec 14, 2009 10:54 AM CST reply actions

Not a big enough budget to recruit out of state? I believe were number one in football revenue, by a 20% margin

by Mysterious Package on Dec 14, 2009 11:00 AM CST reply actions

Lache and Cobbs have nothing in common. Cobbs did not come back to us, he had some things out of his control take over and not facilitate a visit here when that’s all the kid wanted to do.

by MerHorn on Dec 14, 2009 11:02 AM CST reply actions

rantanomo,

It’s an ill-informed presumption likely based on the fact that Ohio State has been all over Hicks from day one and come signing day it’s tough to leave home. But staying at home just doesn’t seem to be that important to the kid. Because of that, Florida and Texas have been leading for a few months. With Strong headed to Lousville and Hicks’ close relationship with Muschamp, Texas is in the driver’s seat. I think it’s 70/30 at this point.

by Vasherized on Dec 14, 2009 11:17 AM CST reply actions

Let’s hope he decides to graduate early and get his ass down here away from the cold and couch-burning Ohioans.

He still hasn’t made that decision but that would make the pressure and hate-spewing only be a month or less

by UT wildcatter on Dec 14, 2009 11:29 AM CST reply actions

MerHorn…we can agree to disagree.

You may be right that his lack of visits was not his own fault, and I’m fine with that. But he had been to Texas before, and he let us fall off his radar just as much as we did. I find it hard to believe that visiting Texas was ’all he wanted to do" when he was able to make the other visits he made.

In the end…he called. Not us. That’s what makes him like both Davis and White. Maybe he won’t have anything in common with Seastrunk. But that remains to be seen.

by Orangeblood79 on Dec 14, 2009 11:32 AM CST reply actions

Some kids have no way of getting to a school unless a coach takes them. Sometimes coaches are told by administrators they are needed to do other things on certain weekends when that coach had planned to take a kid to Texas.

But you are right, he did call and good for us. I just think Lache is a sticky situation and Cobbs is not.

by MerHorn on Dec 14, 2009 11:39 AM CST reply actions

Seastrunk is an incredible talent and I’ve enjoyed watching him. I think I’ll enjoy watching him play in college somewhere too. But he has a little too much of a Noel Devine/Bryce Brown air about him for me.

C’mon, Mysterious Package. Pick up your game, man.

Davis did not call the coaches. There were rumors he was looking around. A little birdie told the Texas staff the commitment to LSU may be going by the wayside, and they followed up.

It doesn’t really matter that much, other than I dislike factual statements thrown out there that aren’t true.

My apologies. I was under the impression that after growing discontent with LSU, Davis inquired of the staff as to whether or not a scholly was still available.

Didn’t mean to post information that was not correct.

And there it is. Longhorn Bob is the predecessor of modern day SLX. Outstanding. HenryJames bought and sent me his book when he self-published his autobiography. Because I lack self-control, I tried to read the book. It was in front of me and I read anything. It is one of the only books I have ever been unable to finish. I ended up getting about 2/3s of the way through before I could last no more.

I read most of “Lovely Bones” last night and it is a good read. Can’t wait to see the movie.

Wait. What? I forgot what we were typing about.

It wasn’t until I met HenryJames face-to-face 6 years ago that he suggested I write an autobiography titled Forged of a Fatter Fire.

It was also then that I suggested he smelled like the batter crunchies at Long John Silver’s and threatened to eat him.

I think information like Ohio State has made him a top priority and it is close to home are well informed assumptions. Combined with our staff’s track record on landing OOS recruits late in the process and now you have a legitimate reason to not put Texas in the driver’s seat on this one.

Hicks has made no mention publicly about Texas being a leader so why do you make the presumption that we are heavy favorites heading into Feb?

According to my confidential sources we tendered offers to three of Shawn Kemp’s bastard children, a unicorn, and two Sasquatch-hybrids from the Pacific Northwest. None of them are going to visit campus, but all will make immediate impacts next year. Somehow this news has alluded the interwebs entirely.

In case you are an optimist….

Lakota West has cancelled the remaining conference calls for Hicks while he makes his final decision. A frequent and seemingly trusted poster named “tresselsbuckeyes” on bucknuts.com writes this today:

http://bucknuts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58473

Lakota West has cancelled all remaining ‘conference calls’ for the Jordan Hicks recruiting updates.

While Tressel and Meyer are supposed to visit LW this week, I’m hearing that Hicks has officially decided on Texas.

I haven’t heard if Tressel and Meyer will still visit LW or not this week.

Take it for what it’s worth.

Pure word of mouth from the Buckeye faithful is that they have pretty much conceded this one. Sounds like a Texas/Fla race. Urban having last at bat with the in-home makes me nervous but Strong to L’ville and our recent positive momentum bode well for the good guys.
