Turner Gill hires his coordinators at Kansas
It's going to be Chuck Long as offensive coordinator and Carl Torbush as defensive coordinator.
Positives: They're familiar with the conference, and they've recruited the region.
Negatives: Oklahoma wasn't sad to see Long go (unlike ChrisApplewhite), and Torbush didn't exactly tear shit up with similar talent at Texas A&M.

Not off to a very good start. Long had an ugly exit from San Diego State. I think Kansas made a huge mistake with this hire. They will be yearning for fat bastard in 5 years.

KU just became my third favorite team.
I knew Turner socially at NU, as we dated women in the same sorority. As you might guess from watching him in the news, he’s a hard-working and tremendously likable guy. If I had to pin down a reason for his success in coaching, I’d say it came from his work ethic and his dedication to relationships. He doesn’t have Pelini’s self-destructive temper, obviously, but in terms of coaching style he’s a lot like Bo (and Coach Boom) in being a players’ coach: he rarely overthinks things, and wears his heart on his sleeve. A good long-term hire at KU. He’s stable, knows Texas, and has shown an ability to identify, recruit, and develop talent. He’ll have KU in regular bowl games soon, and will eventually lead Gene Claude and Phenomenal Smith to the hard stuff.
My initial concern is his new OC and DC. He knew a particular kind of coaching culture at NU, both in the 1980s and from ‘93 through 2004. It’s one that emphasized stable relationships, and he replicated it to a large extent at Buffalo by surrounding himself with guys he knew well. I don’t know how close he is to Torbush and Long. They may well be upgrades, but—just as in real estate—a person wants to pick out his own upgrades. If these hires were the idea of someone else in Lawrence, it could mean a struggle with the AD as well as the rest of the Big 12. That’s a lot for a young coach to do.

With those guys at least you don’t have to worry about them ever leaving to take head coaching jobs.

Long seemingly can’t escape Mangino’s footsteps, or in this case his giant, still warm couch indentation.

No. The KU administration had the bio-emergency team do a complete scrub down of that office the day he left. No old couches, dirty towel bins, or worn out shower slippers left over. Just gleaming whiteness.

They fired Mangino to hire a coach that led Buffalo to a 5-7 record and hired the two worst coordinators they possibly could\ have.
Kansas is going to be right back at 3-9 by 2011.

10/23/10 can now be circled on Aggie calendars. A&M @ KU.
Johnson, Michael, Fuller, et al: please avenge the pain your fans’ endured when this masochistic dipshit was running the show in Aggieland.

Joe Kines v. Carl Torbush is kind of an amazing concept. It’s like a Dan Quayle and Sarah Palin debate or a Creed v. Nickelback Battle of the Bands.

Is parlin saying he and Turner Gill are Eskimo brothers?

Mangino’s rectal effluence is like a cockroach in a nuclear war. Somehow, some way, it finds a way to survive.

Newy, oddly, I think that may be just how Lew Perkins wants it.

Torbush. Wow.
Was Carl Reese not available?

I didn’t think that line actually worked.

He married his girlfriend, and it worked out fine. I got over like Gene Wilder.

“Was Carl Reese not available?”
After getting lit up repeatedly and losing all but one game at Miami (Ohio), Carl must be available.

Best of luck to him – unfortunately I see Torbush being a success – he learn’t the hard way at A+M and will not make the same mistakes again.

EnglishAg i hate to admit it but i do agree…if Torbush were not under such horrible leadership during his stint at A&M (Fraudchione) and if we had at least DECENT athletes on defense ags might have a totally different view of this man, who has had the #1 defense in every conference he’s coached except…..THE BIG 12. I’d be on the lookout for the KU defense these upcoming years.

There is an old Michael Lewis article on mike leach that sums up the Torbush era… too many massive, slow unhealthy D-lineman gassed part way into the second quarter – turns a half time lead into a full time debacle. not much call for 340lb run stuffing tackles or 250lb linebackers in the big XII – sure works a treat in the SEC though. Unfortunately for A+M he had a stockpile of big 10 style recruits* ready to defend against big XII offenses just as the spread was exploding.
Surely not a difficult lesson to learn.
As an alternative, I would have gone with someone from the mountain west – they would be used to defending the spread with little talent but without the price tag that comes with a big XII / pac10 guy. that or chuck amato – he needs a job somewhere and will work in exchange for the use of a smith machine.
- slow white guys with a silent ‘z’ in their surname.

Parlin bringing more than an obscure literary reference?!!! I love it.
Also love the hire. I’m on record as endorsing this. Like it a lot. Congrats to KU and Turner Gill.
One more thing. Parlin and Turner pit-roasting Halle Berry type sorority broads makes me giggle, even though they were probably more Suzanne Somers.

Ghost,
Shut the fuck up about politics, or atleast reference your current VP.
“They finally have a clean, articulate candidate….”
Yeah, that guy.

Suzanne Somers can suck a mean dick. It’s the “nutty chick” principle at work. I don’t give a shit if she’s 63.
