Mack Brown Coaching Tree May Lose A Branch
On New Year's Eve 2006, Minnesota held a 38-7 lead over Texas Tech in the Insight Bowl, only to lose 44-41. Gopher Coach Glen Mason -- the only Minnesota football coach with a winning record over the past 40 years -- was fired.
Now his replacement, Tim Brewster is back in the Insight Bowl, and the media is already calling for his head.
Minneapolis-St. Paul columnist Jim Souhan ripped into the Athletics Director, Joel Maturi, and then took on Brewster.
To summarize: Brewster looked incompetent on the sidelines in the last three games of his third year on the job -- against Illinois, South Dakota State and Iowa. He has ruined a productive quarterback in Adam Weber. He has fired a successful offensive coordinator against the wishes of his boss and replaced him with a coordinator, Jedd Fisch, who is overmatched.
The fans apparently are ready to show Brewster the door.

Tim Brewster is 14-23 overall and only 6-18 in the Big 10 at Minnesota going into the Insight Bowl.
Brewster has been criticized for going after too many JC transfers in recruiting, and Maturi didn't appreciate seeing Brewster's name being put out in the press as a candidate for the Kansas job.

I keep imagining this tree looking like the one on the Charlie Brown Christmas.

Having watch a few Minnesota games, I’ve been totally underwelmed by Brewester. In coaching decision making leaves much to be desired.

When it comes to coaching, Brewster is a hell of a recruiter.
Wait … didn’t they say that about Mack, too? Maybe Brewster just needs a Greg Davis in his life to get him over the hump.

Eric Decker’s been out due to injury for the last four game of Minnesota’s season. I’m pretty sure it’s not a coincidence that the Gopher offense might have looked lost without its #1 receiver.

I forget now who it was, but I remember about a year ago when the Muschamp-in-waiting deal was announced, someone supposedly close to the program said “damn, a lot of us were hoping it would be Brewster”.
Maybe if the timing works out, Brewster could end up back here under Muschamp in some capacity.

Correct me if wrong, but Brewster was Mack’s top recruiter and was “key” in getting Texas back in favor with high school coaches and recruits which led to present success.
Brewster did have weaknesses which Scipio or CTJ have briefly referred. I watched parts of the Minn games and their offense was terrible. Recruiting at Minnesota will always be a challenge for obvious reasons.
Let’s wish Tim Brewster the best and thank him for his contributions to Texas.

Brewster brought us Vince Young. Remove the Jamail statue and replace it with a 50 foot statue of Brewster.

If he’s fired can we back out and play another Big 10 school? Maybe Wisconsin?

I just hope his next job isn’t coaching our OL.

If he’s fired, the most prominent branch in Mack Brown’s coaching tree is Mike Haywood. Think about that.
