The imperturbableness of AB is mind numbing

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:03 PM CST reply actions

I was hoping for Greg Kelser.

by admin on Dec 22, 2009 6:05 PM CST reply actions

Do you think the guy in that Kay commercial got buttsects?

by Minnesotahorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:08 PM CST reply actions

Good start, then the sloppy sets in. See how the TV TO did for us.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:08 PM CST reply actions

The TV TO did not help our sloppy. We are dribble-driving our way to some silly turnovers.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:11 PM CST reply actions

Aaand GJ isn’t really a great 3-pt shooter.

But Hamilton is … now let’s see if he can catch the rock without shooting it.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:13 PM CST reply actions

We’re playing good D. We’re going to pull away once everyone settles down a bit and the players realize what advantages they have over specific defenders.

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:15 PM CST reply actions

Proud peacock one day, feather duster the next?

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:18 PM CST reply actions

Clint Chapman is a witch.

by HenryJames on Dec 22, 2009 6:19 PM CST reply actions

A Clint C sighting! Nice little J from the baseline.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:19 PM CST reply actions

Was that a Barnes impression? Or Bush?

by Minnesotahorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:19 PM CST reply actions

Damn AB is ridiculously good. He’s by far the best slasher we have. He’s not finishing right now, but it’ll come.

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:20 PM CST reply actions

Early FT misses not a good omen.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:21 PM CST reply actions

And the answer to my question above re Hamilton is – no.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:22 PM CST reply actions

Hamilton’s bad shots have now led directly to 7 Sparty points.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:23 PM CST reply actions

Hamilton is dumber than Vasherized at times.

by HenryJames on Dec 22, 2009 6:23 PM CST reply actions

Good things happen when you can pressure the ball. I can’t get over how much improvement Dog has made this year. Bradley’s perimeter D is nasty too.

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:23 PM CST reply actions

Ugh we look ugly against their D.

by NY Horn on Dec 22, 2009 6:25 PM CST reply actions

Our dribble drives + Hamilton’s shot selection = tie ballgame.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:25 PM CST reply actions

I’m not liking Dog driving the lane.

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:25 PM CST reply actions

Gary Johnson doesn’t need to be driving from the top of the key.

by HenryJames on Dec 22, 2009 6:26 PM CST reply actions

These refs are fucking annoying too.

by NY Horn on Dec 22, 2009 6:26 PM CST reply actions

Justin Mason just gives us nothing offensively. I feel bad for the guy.

by Minnesotahorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:27 PM CST reply actions

Quick count from the dribble drives is 4 TOs, 1 basket.

Howzabout we pass that sucker around just a bit?

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:28 PM CST reply actions

Jordan Hamilton created a 6 point negative swing all by himself. Gary Johnson doing his best to keep us at 21.

by Scipio Tex on Dec 22, 2009 6:29 PM CST reply actions

After Avery steps on the line, it’s Dribble-Drive TOs 5, Dribble-Drive Baskets 1.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:31 PM CST reply actions

God damn Bradley is fast with the ball.

by HenryJames on Dec 22, 2009 6:32 PM CST reply actions

Wish AB would have dunked that one

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:33 PM CST reply actions

I don’t understand how kids like Bradley, who have an excellent mid-range game, can be that bad at shooting FT’s. Fuck it, just take a jump shot from the line.

by NY Horn on Dec 22, 2009 6:34 PM CST reply actions

I’m pretty sure Dexter Pittman is eligible.

by Scipio Tex on Dec 22, 2009 6:34 PM CST reply actions

Wow, that escalated fast.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:35 PM CST reply actions

Scip – I think Dex has 2 fouls.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:36 PM CST reply actions

jeez they are hot from 3 point land

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:36 PM CST reply actions

big bucket by Jai

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:36 PM CST reply actions

Farve!

by Minnesotahorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:37 PM CST reply actions

J’Covan has my approval to handle the ball near our goal.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:37 PM CST reply actions

damn it hill

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:38 PM CST reply actions

I laughed out loud at Hill’s defense on Big Sparty.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:38 PM CST reply actions

keep your feet

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:38 PM CST reply actions

BEHorn, I’d say AB, but JB is my #2

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:40 PM CST reply actions

James kills me when he decides to shoot with a man in his face 16ft away from the goal.

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:42 PM CST reply actions

Our shot selection has been somewhat dimwitted in this half.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:42 PM CST reply actions

Izzo’s getting a lot of face time with the refs tonight.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:44 PM CST reply actions

Pass-pass-3 by Hamilton.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:45 PM CST reply actions

Good Jordan. Good Barnes. Jordan played silly earlier, but Rick put him right back in.

by Scipio Tex on Dec 22, 2009 6:46 PM CST reply actions

Now let’s see if Jordan can avoid what, in golf, I refer to as the “post-birdie fuck up”.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:46 PM CST reply actions

Kalin Lucas is losing money tonight.

by Scipio Tex on Dec 22, 2009 6:48 PM CST reply actions

Our FT shooting has been hoe-rendous so far tonight.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:49 PM CST reply actions

Nice foul Lucas.

by Minnesotahorn on Dec 22, 2009 6:53 PM CST reply actions

Fucking abortion. J’Covan should always close out the half. Always.

Oh well, we’re fine.

by Scipio Tex on Dec 22, 2009 6:55 PM CST reply actions

Halftime thoughts and observations:

1) MSU is 5-6 from 3 point land. They’ll cool off

2) We’re 3-8 from the line. That probably won’t improve percentage wise by much. We’re just a terrible free throw shooting team. Get used to this driving you nuts the rest of the year.

3) Almost everyone on offense has played out of control multiple times in the first half. Poor shot selection (GJ and DJ taking contested long range shots) and driving the lane and getting stuck in no mans land plays are killing us. I have faith that we play more disciplined in the 2nd Half.

4) Dex has 2 points and 0 rebounds and 2 PF’s. Expect a big 2nd half.

5) JB stat line is very under whelming right now.

6) Jai is playing more than I expected. He’s playing considerably better than he did against UNC.

7) I think we pull away in the 2nd half and win by double digits, though that is contingent on Dex wrecking shit like I fully expect.

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 6:56 PM CST reply actions

I keep telling myself that we’re just getting Jai up to speed by playing him at the point so much this game…

by alma on Dec 22, 2009 6:56 PM CST reply actions

Doge and Big Sexy sat after their 2nd fouls. They’ll be back.

by wtfbbq on Dec 22, 2009 7:02 PM CST reply actions

I win all the time, young guys on national TV don’t…but I do teach leasons….

by hubris on Dec 22, 2009 7:04 PM CST reply actions

Hubris – are you teaching “leasons”, or “lesions”?

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:07 PM CST reply actions

My thoughts………….

So far we are showing that we lack a physical inside presence once Sexy goes to the bench. He needs to stay out of foul trouble.

Hamilton is good for a WTF shot at least once every 10 minutes of play.

Jai Lucas looks out of place in our backcourt.

Bradley needs to play more aggressive on the offensive end. When he attacks, good things happen.

I am hungry!

by p on Dec 22, 2009 7:12 PM CST reply actions

I think Tom Izzo has taken over where Bobby Knight and John Thompson left off. By that I mean he bullies the refs into calling the game the way he wants, giving his team an advantage.

Watch the MSU players when a shot goes up, or any loose ball for that matter. They grab the nearest opponent and shove them out of the way. #10 for MSU has gone over the back for a rebound 7-8 times (refs called one).

“But Art that’s what the way the game is played in the Big 10”. Bullshit. That’s not basketball. I’m not saying he isn’t a great coach (he is), but that’s not basketball.

by Art Vandelay on Dec 22, 2009 7:14 PM CST reply actions

These refs blow my mind.

by NY Horn on Dec 22, 2009 7:20 PM CST reply actions

At the first TV timeout, this feels like one of those, “We’re not playing very well, and they’re doing about as well as they can, so the fact that we’re down 1 point is at least somewhat encouraging.”

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:20 PM CST reply actions

BEHorn said: " are you teaching "leasons", or "lesions"?"

I am from Grease

by hubris on Dec 22, 2009 7:22 PM CST reply actions

Hamilton’s first nutball shot of the half.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:22 PM CST reply actions

Is it fair to say that we’re seeing more ball movement, a little less dribbling, in our current mini-run?

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:27 PM CST reply actions

An obscene foul call. This NBA officiating drives me fucking nuts.

by Scipio Tex on Dec 22, 2009 7:32 PM CST reply actions

The zebras owe us about 9 makeup calls after that ridiculous call on Dex.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:33 PM CST reply actions

Nice assist by James to Hamilton for the open look.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:33 PM CST reply actions

The teams are playing a great game. Refs are making it tough to watch.

Pleasantly surprised Barns is letting the kids do their thing. I’d rather see a few bad choices from Hamilton than Mason Scissorhands.

by Art Vandelay on Dec 22, 2009 7:41 PM CST reply actions

I don’t know why we use so much on-ball pressure 40 feet from the hoop against their little guards … it’s like begging to get out of defensive position once they get our guy on their hip.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:44 PM CST reply actions

This will be an interesting test down the stretch for our foul shooting (I name that I hope isn’t too prophetic).

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:46 PM CST reply actions

Is every MSU player named Raymond?

by Art Vandelay on Dec 22, 2009 7:51 PM CST reply actions

The J’Covan kid might be pretty j’good.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:52 PM CST reply actions

Raymond, RayMond, Raemon, Raiman, etc.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:52 PM CST reply actions

I just chest bumped the dog.

by Art Vandelay on Dec 22, 2009 7:57 PM CST reply actions

I’m not one for hyperbole, but Gary Johnson is better than Michael Jordan.

by HenryJames on Dec 22, 2009 7:57 PM CST reply actions

Sweet.

by Sasha is a Longhorn Dog on Dec 22, 2009 7:57 PM CST reply actions

Actually smart for Izzo to play Hack a ….vs this team.

by MerHorn on Dec 22, 2009 7:59 PM CST reply actions

Stupid having Balbay handling the ball right now.

by NY Horn on Dec 22, 2009 8:00 PM CST reply actions

All this without Dexter. Are we deep or what???

by Art Vandelay on Dec 22, 2009 8:03 PM CST reply actions

Dang. I like watching this team. The effort they put forth for the entire game is amazing.

by Sasha is a Longhorn Dog on Dec 22, 2009 8:06 PM CST reply actions

Ata Turk

by HenryJames on Dec 22, 2009 8:06 PM CST reply actions

Damion James has been All World the last two games.

This team plays with more effort than any Longhorm team I can remember.

by Art Vandelay on Dec 22, 2009 8:07 PM CST reply actions

Pretty amazing we were able to do this when the idiot refs took Pittman out of the game.

by NY Horn on Dec 22, 2009 8:08 PM CST reply actions

“If you’d told me …”

If you’d told me that at this point we’d not only be undefeated BUT have also won every game by double digits, I’d have laughed at you.

by BEHorn on Dec 22, 2009 8:10 PM CST reply actions

We are real good. And getting better.

by Scipio Tex on Dec 22, 2009 8:10 PM CST reply actions

Well, we won by double digits like I thought, I just can’t believe we did it with out Dex.

by n-ea on Dec 22, 2009 8:10 PM CST reply actions

And now to enjoy the pork tenderloin I just cooked that had been marinating for two days. By myself.

Alright Cal, give Kansas a big ol shitburger to eat so we can be #1

by Scipio Tex on Dec 22, 2009 8:19 PM CST reply actions

I want Pork Tenderloin.

by Art Vandelay on Dec 22, 2009 8:23 PM CST reply actions

If ever on a breakaway dunk Dogus Balbay screams “ALALALALALALA!!!!!” we should retire his number.

by Minnesotahorn on Dec 22, 2009 8:24 PM CST reply actions

i too want an undefeated KU, and Sasha’s loin, eh, pork tenderloin…

Doge had a great game, and Dex was victimized by his size AND the refs. DJ looked allsome as did Gary in what slowly – or obviously – appears to be a direct result of poor play by Jordan. with Gary in, we dont need Dex, Gary and Damion together wreak havoc with their lateral quickness.

was again very very encouraged by JCB, and his skills around the court.

February 8 cannot get here fast enough.

by scagnetti on Dec 22, 2009 8:33 PM CST reply actions

Minnesota – That is almost Facebook status worthy. I if I didn’t have some over-sensitive friends.

And I have more than enough pork over here. I’m going to be eating this stuff for at least a week. Or as long as it lasts. Whichever comes first.

Strange how the basketball season is shaping up like the football season.

Football season was FL, TX, and AL all year. Basketball is looking like the Big 3 as well (KU, TX, and UK). KU is the heavily touted and talented #1 (Florida), Texas is loaded and driven by defense (sound familiar?), and UK is the SEC team lurking and waiting for its big breakout game (Alabama).

Maybe if I had more tenderloin my mind wouldn’t work like this….

by Art Vandelay on Dec 22, 2009 8:46 PM CST reply actions

hamilton had a fine game. some big shots in the 2nd half,, despite some now typical boneheaded ones in the first. if barnes can walk the balance of keeping him accountable for good decisions BUT also give him freedom to grow and make mistakes…i think hamilton will be a monster by the end of the year.

by mpayne on Dec 22, 2009 8:46 PM CST reply actions

Jordan is still a long way away from where he will get, but he was the only other Horn in double figures tonight. 2 TO’s in 20 minutes is also progress for him on some level.

He really needs to carve out a niche or a role on offense and stick to that in the short term. He’s so far away from being a complete player that he should settle into a specialist role until he gets himself under control.

Interesting contrast in styles vs. our previous game. The natural reaction is to say we played worse, which is true to some degree, but we were on their asses and wore them out. They were settling for jumpers over the last 10 minutes of the game, and that was bound to break in our favor eventually.

Still so many things to get better at, yet nobody can stay within 10 of us when the game is over.

by RichUT on Dec 22, 2009 8:48 PM CST reply actions

Were these Big 12 officials or Big 10?

by java on Dec 22, 2009 9:05 PM CST reply actions

Tenderloin? I made chirizo, egg, and potato tacos, with Guiness. Advantage: Me.

Fuck those officials. That’s the worst I’ve seen in a long time. I kept wondering what the game would look like with some halfway decent officiating. I guess for starters, Dex would have played more than nine minutes or whatever it was.

Sure feels good to play your B- game and beat a legit top 10 team by double digits.

by nordberg on Dec 22, 2009 9:13 PM CST reply actions

Also, I can’t get used to hearing Musberger and Bob Knight calling games together. Think they’ll knock back a few after the game?

I’m not sure we’re going to lose a game this season, and we’ll win it all.

No hedging required on my $100 bet on Texas at 15:1 odds.

Hook ’em!

Does anyone recall the point in the game when MSU had the ball and JB was defending? Brown was smothering the guy without touching him – masterful, aggressive defense. Then, with about 9 seconds on the shot clock, Johnson comes tearing across the floor, and the official called a foul. From the TV angle, it was difficult to tell if the call was legitimate, but Brown didn’t appear to be irritated or frustrated by it at all. He simply turned and walked to the other end of the court.

Of course, the same was not true here, but that is beside the point.

This team is impressive, and I think Tom Izzo and Roy Williams would agree with that.

by java on Dec 22, 2009 9:22 PM CST reply actions

Was at the game. One of the most enjoyable basketball experiences I’ve ever had. Besides the great game, there was some fun drama around the court. You probably saw the woman get her air horn taken. The crowd went nuts.

Did the broadcast also show the fan hitting a half court shot and winning free airline tickets around the world? And the crowd went nuts.

Also, did they show the former UT student who would dance in the aisle as the Pom girls did their routine to the Wabash Cannonball? The Pom girls invited him to dance WITH them on the floor. The guy was great, and the crowd went nuts.

Did I mention the game was great? In the last 5 minutes of the game the Horns stole the soul of the Spartans. That’s what we do. We steal the opponents’ souls. It was a beautiful thing to watch. And the crowd went nuts.

by Texoz on Dec 22, 2009 9:30 PM CST reply actions

Justin Mason still plays – why?
Jai Lucas needs to hit the roids
Jordan Hamilton hits 4 threes all in the flow of the game.
Look what 4 years of college can do for you – Damion James
Balbay and Johnson were meatcleavers tonight – love it.

Good to get down early (8 pts), might be the biggest deficit of the year and come back. This team needs some adversity show what they got when you get down. Also good to see this team do all of this basically without Big Dex.

Was that cheering I heard at the Drum??? Awesome!

by tree on Dec 22, 2009 9:34 PM CST reply actions

I was behind the basket on the south end, and from my vantage point it was a terribly officiated game. I’m curious to see the replay to see if the cameras saw what I saw. At one point late in the game James was driving baseline and MSU intentionally fouled him, but there was no call.

I know the NBA allows moving screens, players don’t have to be fully set. Their guys were putting a lot of hips and arms into their screens, which they do call in the NBA. I’m curious to see how that forearm thrown at Dex at the start looked. We picked up 7 or 8 fouls in the first ten minutes of both halves. They had 3 or 4 fouls going late into both halves.

I really gotta see the tape on this one.

That aside, what a great win. Great in that Dex didn’t provide for us and we still won pulling away. Great that we overcame the officiating and the first true test of our grit. Great that we were able to find yet another lineup that put us over the top. Our next big test will be our first true road game at Ark.

by EggNog on Dec 22, 2009 9:35 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, the officials were horrible but I am glad. With those kinds of horrible calls the game turned in to the kind of game you will see in March, and our frosh needed to experience that.

by ransomstoddard on Dec 22, 2009 9:37 PM CST reply actions

Texoz, I don’t think they showed the half-time, can’t guarantee it because we had friends drop by to pick up tamales we purchased for them. They did show the MSU fan removed for the air horn (announcers said whistle).

The crowd sounded loud and looked excited. It looked like a great crowd.

by java on Dec 22, 2009 9:45 PM CST reply actions

The officials that worked that game – Ed Hightower, Steve Welmer, Rick Hartzell – are all big-time NCAA tournament vets.

by srr50 on Dec 22, 2009 9:53 PM CST reply actions

Were any of them part of the crew that worked the ISU game years ago?

by EggNog on Dec 22, 2009 9:55 PM CST reply actions

Is Ed Hightower the cunt that kicked Rick out vs. Xavier in the tourney a few years back?

by Sailor Ripley on Dec 22, 2009 10:56 PM CST reply actions

The refs were fine for the most part. The only bad call that really hurt us was the 4th on Dex. That was the benefit of Izzo chewing ref ass the entire game (I hate that shit). They let both teams play, and that usually benefits the deeper and more athletic team, which is going to be us like against everybody. I have been following TX basketball since we won the NIT in the late 70s (top 5 in early 80s, BMW Penders, the Barnes era with high profile players doing well in the nba) and I have no qualms saying this is the best Texas team ever. Just dominant. Enjoy it while it lasts. Isn’t it glorious to be a TX fan right now.

by Noonan on Dec 22, 2009 11:08 PM CST reply actions

That was Ted Valentine.

by BobInHouston on Dec 22, 2009 11:49 PM CST reply actions

Sorry, Ed. Though your first foul call on Dex was cuntish, you are not necessarily a cunt. Ted Valentine is the definitive cunt.

by Sailor Ripley on Dec 23, 2009 12:28 AM CST reply actions

All the black refs look the same to Sailor Ripley.

Ed Hightower may not be a cunt on the Ted Valentine level, but there is seriously no bigger, “I am the Show!” college ref out there.

by SL Xpress on Dec 23, 2009 12:56 AM CST reply actions

Valentine’s “show” was on full display with Pittman’s first foul. It reminded me of Leslie Nielson’s umpire routine at the end of Naked Gun.

by EggNog on Dec 23, 2009 1:08 AM CST reply actions

Late post, but I took time out to watch Aggie game. Did any of you watch it? Brutal injury to one of their seniors. My nephews, Aggies to the core, said it looked like his leg was broken through both bones – lower part of leg was at an awkward angle to the rest of leg. ugh!

The 4th foul on Dex was bogus. He had his elbows in and turned within his body’s space (big space, yes!), but he did not touch the MSU players. To say Dex was targeted is paranoid, but I agree with Noonan.

If we get these refs in the tourney, we will be screwed unless they are enlightened in the interim. They sucked.

Texoz : you lucky bastard. I gotta move to GAA when I retire and my ass will be in the drum for every game! I TVO’d the game and did see the ho’ with the air horn. Funny and stupid to try and distract DJ during a FT. Glad they let her stay so she could she Sparty’s soul stolen!

by dasmithjones on Dec 23, 2009 9:02 AM CST reply actions

I was sitting about 10 rows behind the lady with the air horn. She thought she was getting thrown out and was packing up when the security guards came and told her she only had to give up the air horn. As everything was settling down and the game about to start, Izzo looked at her and winked. And actually, I think the air horn incident helped Texas out (Damion actually made both of those FTs, possibly the only time we made a pair all night). Then both the fans and players seemed more into the game, at which time we closed the gap from 35-28 to 35-34 right before halftime.
