Urban Meyer Stepping Down

Holy shit.

I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer said in statement. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family.

One of the Top 5 jobs in college football is now open. Guard your coaches and coaches-in-waiting.

Yup, definitely liking our chances on Hicks now. As for Stoops, I wonder if the shine hasn’t come off enough over the past couple of years to prevent Florida from going after him.

That’s a freaking huge job opening. Much bigger than the ND job. Great weather, city and recruiting ground. The money won’t be an obstacle either. Very very interesting.

Foley will definitely try to talk to Stoops . . . and Muschamp.

I can’t see the Gators taking someone from outside of the programs with zero HC experience

The Gator program is in fantastic shape and they will want to bring in someone to drive the bus

Stoops has to be their number one target and by a significant distance. Reminds me of Roy Williams leaving KU for NC. Patterson appears to be getting some early run as well, and Tebow will clearly get at least an interview.

Some of you claiming BS and “cover-up” need to cool your britches. He has a history of health problems.

Dehydration is common with chemotherapy. If I had to bet, that would be my guess. Mostly because it is so sudden with 6 days until a bowl game.

Feel awful for his family, but I respect a guy for putting that before a glamour job.

by mockingbird on Dec 26, 2009 6:21 PM CST reply actions

Boys and girls, Florida already had their shot at Stoops 5-6 years ago, and they put on a full court press to no avail. Notre Dame made sense because they were in rebuilding mode, but they had the resources and the tradition to appeal to an elite coach with an ego to feed. Florida already has a monster in place, and a hungry one at that. They won’t even go to the damned Sugar Bowl.

As for Meyer, this has got to be either a progressive neurological disease or cancer. Urban lost a bunch of weight this year, and he needed immediate medical attention after the SEC title game.

I have never bought any of the “Stoops to _______” internet hysteria in the past, but in this one particular case I’d have to think they Florida calls him and that he at least listens. There are only a few guys who are even potentially plug ‘n’ play at Florida, and Stoops is one of them … plus, as Gator coach he can ask Tebow to heal his -chin.

by BEHorn on Dec 26, 2009 6:26 PM CST reply actions

If I’m Jeremy Foley, I want a defensive minded coordinator with knowledge of the SEC if I can’t get a proven head coach. Boys and girls, that’s Will Muschamp. Don’t kid yourselves into thinking that the UT head coaching job in 4-7 years is as good or better than the Florida head coaching job right now.

Craziness. I hope it’s nothing serious and wish him the best. Hopefully he just needs a year or two off. Jobs like Florida, Texas, OU, ND, USC, etc., have got to be ridiculously stressful. I can only imagine the effects it has on the health of those head coaches.

Patterson? Same level as Peterson.

Whittingham, Harbaugh?

There was an article on him in SI about a month ago. It detailed some sort of problem with his brain wherein when he gets too amped up, he has horrible headaches and is violently ill. As I recall, it can’t be fixed by surgery, but can be controllled basically by not being in extremely stressful situations and some level of meds. He has lived with it for a long time and, now that he has been to the pinnacle in his profession, probably believes, rightly, that he should bow out and live a decent life with his wife and two daughters.

I wish him a long and healthy life.

by bigdukesix on Dec 26, 2009 7:29 PM CST reply actions

Consideing Meyer will still remain with the team in some capacity Mullen or Strong are the top choices. ESPN is reporting Strong has not signed a formal contract.with Louisville.

Jim Harbaugh would be my next choice. Honestly Florida will not have to make a list with more than 3 names.

by Newy25 on Dec 26, 2009 7:29 PM CST reply actions

"Meyer has been to the hospital at least twice since suffering chest pains after the SEC title game, a Florida source told ESPN. He has been diagnosed with a heart valve muscle defect, the source said.

“The problem is not life threatening, a Florida source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. The same source said Meyer will remain in Gainesville in a non-coaching role to be defined later.”

I’m guessing we will know exactly what his problem is before too long.

River card. Muschamp’s behavior will tell you everything you need to know, if Mack doesn’t sooner.

by lawdog13 on Dec 26, 2009 7:33 PM CST reply actions

Someone quoted an SI article that indicated an arachnoid tumor (brain) was diagnosed in 1998. Surgery was not and is not indicated.

Following Meyer will be a dangerous act. How can the performance over the past 4 years be surpassed? It would be difficult to match it. On the other hand, Muschamp is a part of the success Mack is experiencing at Texas. When he takes over, the pressure will be there, but he will have past performance to his credit, as well.

JMHO.

Hook ’em!

by java on Dec 26, 2009 7:52 PM CST reply actions

I’ll bet the list shapes up like this:

Dan Mullen
Bob Stoops
Gary Patterson
Chris Peterson
Butch Davis
Will Muschamp

I’ll bet Stoops will be one of Foley’s first calls. OU fans will hem and haw about how Stoops already turned the job down, won’t want to follow up Urban, etc., but I’ll call BS on that logic. The reality is, the Florida and OU jobs are very different today than they were then. The talent levels and near-term outlooks for the two programs have essentially flip-flopped. If you believe (like I do) that Stoops actually did look at the ND job, then it makes sense that he’d look even harder at Florida.

With regard to Muschamp, I think this may be one of the very few jobs that is too big for him at this exact moment. Florida can handpick their next guy and it’s hard to believe they’d pick a guy without HC experience from outside the program.

If Stoops doesn’t bolt, I think Patterson’s the guy they should go with. If not him, then Mullen for the continuity.

by Jackanape on Dec 26, 2009 8:14 PM CST reply actions

Common sense says we should be worried because a call to Will has to take place if it has not already.

A young guys who loves to coach, from GA, studied under Saban at the college and NFL level and has won a MNC. Now under Brown has made our defense look like must of us only dreamed of.

IMO Will is in the top 3 for this job and I would not be shocked if he were #1 on the list…even w/out the HC experience..I think the the young and best DC in football will not be scared to follow Meyer…plus Will has skins on the wall.

If Will stays then we know he will be here for the next 15 years.

by MerHorn on Dec 26, 2009 8:25 PM CST reply actions

“IMO Will is in the top 3 for this job and I would not be shocked if he were #1 on the list”

I would be shocked if he is even on the list. With the sudden nature of the change and the way things are going at Florida stability should be priority #1 for Foley. Meyer will still coach in the program in some limited capacity and bringing in a coordinator who has equivalent success as Strong would not make a whole lot of sense.

Even if they went the wholesale change route they could pluck any number of proven championship caliber head coaches.

by Jackanape on Dec 26, 2009 9:48 PM CST reply actions

No, I’m not nervous. The ND thing would’ve made more sense for Stoops than Florida. Whomever succeeds Meyer has a very tough act with nothing but downside, especially if Meyer is hanging around the campus. This screams “family hire” of someone who can be mentored by Meyer for whatever time he is still there. Look, someday Bob Stoops will leave Oklahoma. In my opinion it will happen in the next 5-6 years. But I believe it will be for an early retirement, not another college job. Remember, his dad died on a football field. He isn’t going to let that kind of thing happen to him.

by NorthDallasSooner on Dec 26, 2009 9:53 PM CST reply actions

I’m buying on Strong getting the job. It will keep recruiting from possibly imploding, will put someone in-house and considered very succesful at the top, and will keep the position from being in limbo for possibly 2-3 weeks.

If Strong isn’t name the coach soon, I expect recruits to start dropping…I believe it has to be Strong, regardless of his head coaching experience.

by Orangeblood79 on Dec 26, 2009 9:55 PM CST reply actions

It’s going to be real interesting if it’s Strong.

I get the sense from a couple of board perusals that not all Florida fans are especially eager for Strong to take over the head spot.

Florida’s in great shape in a lot of ways, but they’re also in a delicate spot in some others.

One thing I’ve read in these reports is that Meyer’s ailment isn’t presently life-threatening, and that he expects he’ll stick around the athletic department/football program in some capacity. I think that would be a flashing yellow light for any “big-time” coach (e.g., Stoops). Maybe not so much for someone like Strong.

by CrazyJoeDavola on Dec 26, 2009 9:59 PM CST reply actions

Foley is very good and will not make the HC call based on one year of recruits, plus whoever they hire will have a good reputation so they should be able to keep more recruits than they lose. I do think they will move quick on this hire as I doubt the resignation caught Foley off guard since Urban and him have a good relationship.

by MerHorn on Dec 26, 2009 10:02 PM CST reply actions

Oh, also: If Strong drops the Louisville job, that maybe opens things up again for Sumlin.

And maybe Strong uses that opportunity to lure away Jim Jeffcoat.

Et voila: We potentially/probably end up losing both Hicks and Jackson Jeffcoat at the last minute.

by CrazyJoeDavola on Dec 26, 2009 10:03 PM CST reply actions

I guess what I don’t understand is why Horn fan always gets so giddy and hopeful anytime they get to have wet dreams about Stoops to _______ a la HelmetBoy, Jackanape, and others. If a coach whose teams skullfucked my beloved alma mater 65-13 and 63-14 in prior years was now the inferior to my team and coaches, I’d want that asshole coaching where I could watch us beat his ass every single year.

Moving on, NDS is spot on. Stoops has stated repeatedly that he’s staying at OU because he’s promised his kids and his wife that they would get to stay put while the kids were still in school. Notre Dame worried me because it seemed exactly like the type of job for Stoops at this point in his career. Then, it turned out it was all manufactured smoke and no fire. If Urban Meyer really is staying on with the program, then either Charlie Strong is on his way back to Gainesville, or Florida is going after someone else’s coordinator. Because any top head coach’s ego is way too big for the previous guy to have any kind of role in the program after new management arrives. Especially one like Stoops.

Trips, I’m honestly not sure because, as I stated in another comment in a discussion with srr, OU is uniquely reliant on the football program to help generate PR, donations, and applications for the academic side of the university. This gives a head coach at OU a unique position of strength that he wouldn’t enjoy at any other program. Obviously, we’ll pay top dollar, and obviously we can recruit at an elite level even with UT having a strong grip in Texas. We’re top 10 in every major recruiting ranking even during a shart of a year. I’m not ignorant to Florida’s inherent advantage in terms of location and proximity to talent (both vaginal and athletic). I just don’t think it’s the hands-down difference that your huge set of burnt orange blinders and deep, unrelenting hate of OU leads you to believe. UT is probably the best job out there. I get that. But Florida RIGHT NOW is a much better deal than UT whenever Mack Brown is ready to let go. Ask Jimbo Fisher and FSU how that worked out.

Mack does not want to coach much longer so comparing to FSU is off but it makes sense that if Florida comes calling Will considers going.

Stoops to ND never made sense, after FL and ou Stoops would not appreciate recruiting with standards. Stoops is at a place where he is king, he says what goes and everyone at the school backs him..no reason to go to ND or have to compete vs the SEC at FL.

by MerHorn on Dec 26, 2009 10:26 PM CST reply actions

Nate…..

Stoops leaving does not benefit us. The only reason people here get a rise about it is because of the frenzy it would send your fan base into. I think Stoops leaving is all kinds of benefit to us. He is a terrific coach and a great recruiter. He will have OU back in the top 5 in short order. I’ll take my chances with him gone, thank you very much.

I don’t know anything about the intracacies of Meyer staying on and how that affects their HC hire, but I very much believe that Texas would up the ante should they approach Muschamp. If that means that Dodds retires, Mack takes the AD role and Muschamp ascends, so be it. Mack appears to have had about enough. I’ve seen comments about Mack not wanting the AD job, and that may be true, but I sure don’t see any smoke signals on the horizon as to who might be another candidate once Dodds steps down, which will be soon — very soon. Do you think we would have named Muschamp “HC In Waiting” if he was expected to wait 5 years? I don’t.

jj, I think Dodds sticks around to see us through this Mizzou/Big 10 stuff (including the next phase of our television/Internet distribution deal). The guy has worked too long and hard to get Texas in the position it’s in to see someone else handle that daunting chore. And honestly, I don’t think I’d want Mack in charge during such a time. Dodds is fully capable of wielding a concealed dagger if needs be. I don’t see Mack having the same capacity.

And in any event, I don’t know if Mack really wants that AD job. Has he ever expressed any overt desire for the spot? My completely uninformed and non-insidery opinion is that we’d go after someone that’s got broad-spectrum sports experience at a big state school and lots of experience in dealing with the NCAA. Whether that is a hire of some other current AD or an incredibly qualified assistant AD I don’t know. And he – or she for that matter – would have to be completely on-board with Muschamp as the next HC. That’s about the only tangible reason I could see Mack get the role.

I could definitely see Mack in some advisor/outreach coordinator spot for the football program. He would be incredible at that.

by True Horn on Dec 27, 2009 8:32 AM CST reply actions

CDJ, I agree that AD may not be the job for Mack. Frankly, the “Mack would be a perfect AD” crowd seems a bit like the “Major to OC” crowd — lots of sentiment and little knowledge of either job and what makes a good candidate. And you’re absolutely correct in saying that someone of Dodds’ experience needs to guide Texas through the upcoming conference expansion turmoil. That said, the Big 10 has set a short timetable, so I don’t see that as necessarily being something that would stop Texas from elevating Muschamp in short order. Another pay bump to $1.5M or so would probably keep him around — UF is a lateral move and not really worth the stress on a family for a one-year delay, especially given how gaga the Texas fanbase is over the guy. He’d be starting from scratch with the Gators.

Stewart Mandel twitter this morning, suggesting Foley won’t go after Boom or maybe not even Dan Mullen:

  1. @AJGibbs Foley will want someone with more head coaching experience.

Why isn’t anyone talking about Saban?

by TOR on Dec 27, 2009 11:11 AM CST reply actions

I can’t see how it would be anyone BUT Mullen. They won’t go after Muschamp. They want someone who will keep continuity, who knows the area and recruits, and who has head coaching experience. No one else hits all the marks IMO.

How about Petrino?

It appears Meyer has pulled a Favre on us all….

One day later, he just couldn’t stay away.

Tebow must be working on a miracle heal.

Florida coach Urban Meyer, who announced Saturday night that he would step down after coaching the Gators against Cincinnati in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day, is now having second thoughts about retirement, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com on Sunday.

Under a plan being discussed, Florida offensive coordinator Steve Adazzio would coach the Gators in the Sugar Bowl. Meyer, who cited health concerns as the reason for his retirement, would take a leave of absence and return to the team before the 2010 season.

However, a source close to the program told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that Meyer would take a leave of absence for the entirety of the 2010 season. Adazzio would take over as interim coach for the season.

So this really is just a stunt to boost the awful bowl ticket sales?

by TOR on Dec 27, 2009 1:23 PM CST reply actions

Tebow is a miracle worker. Tim will also coach the Sugar Bowl

by UT wildcatter on Dec 27, 2009 1:25 PM CST reply actions

Meyer vacillating is the best thing that can happen to everyone else. Uncertainty will not help recruiting.

by ghostofagroundgame on Dec 27, 2009 1:29 PM CST reply actions

We should all buy a Sugar Bowl ticket to show our support of Meyer. Yeah, that’s it.

by TOR on Dec 27, 2009 1:33 PM CST reply actions

Ghost, that was my exact thought as well. Doesn’t much affect my jayhawks as we don’t cross paths on the recruiting trail with Florida too often…but with DC leaving and unproven OC taking over as HC, their brand is going to take a massive hit until there’s a defined plan in place. Even then, players with half a mind will have to question the legitimacy of the plan.

by Hiphopopotamus on Dec 27, 2009 1:41 PM CST reply actions

Corch Meyer is a drama queen, like Tebus and their congresswoman. I like this development.

by Blueshorn on Dec 27, 2009 1:42 PM CST reply actions

First Donovan, now Meyer. Bunch drama queens over in Gainesville.

by CrazyJoeDavola on Dec 27, 2009 1:43 PM CST reply actions

Not knowing the direction of your program fom one day to the next is always good for recuiting. When is signing day again?

Between this and Kelly leaving Cincy the Sugar Bowl committee has to love their selections.

by Newy25 on Dec 27, 2009 2:02 PM CST reply actions

Urban Meyer is a genius. His team will play lights out in the bowl game and I betcha dollars to donuts that Florida recruiting doesn’t take a hit.

by Bill Boxley on Dec 27, 2009 2:20 PM CST reply actions

All the local reporters are saying there is no way he misses a game next fall. At his press conference he just said his gut tells him he’ll be on the sideline as head coach for the first game next year. So basically he’s going to take a leave of absence just in time for……the off season.

How gay.

by Hornmatic on Dec 27, 2009 4:12 PM CST reply actions

So … he’s going on vacation.

Great. Thanks for the bullshit drama, Florida. Nice opportunity to squeeze in some more face time for Tebow in that presser too.

I can’t believe those fuckers actually got me to feeling a little sorry for them for a moment.

Urban’s a homo.

Not!

Urban Favre has dropped a whole new layer of drama queen atop the Disturbingly Homoerotic Tebow Worship.

by BEHorn on Dec 27, 2009 7:37 PM CST reply actions

ghost nailed it. The best situation for teams recruiting against FL is to have Meyer’s future uncertain. There is now blood in the water and the other sharks will not hesitate.

by Texoz on Dec 27, 2009 10:41 PM CST reply actions

On the other hand, you have to respect the power of the Tebow – apparently, he was able to bring Urban back from the retired.

by BEHorn on Dec 27, 2009 11:21 PM CST reply actions

Though he didn’t wait the customary three days…

by Sailor Ripley on Dec 28, 2009 12:38 AM CST reply actions

What a douche. I bet this isn’t over. There’s got to be at least one more development in this. Bet something is announced before their bowl game. Then possibly one more after it. Regardless of my dislike of Texas, Mack is a good guy and I’m glad he doesn’t pull this drama queen crap.

by HoyaSooner on Dec 28, 2009 12:56 AM CST reply actions

Urban Favre has proved definitively that neither his health, family, or team comes first.

If his health came first, he wouldn’t have a job that makes his brain-spiders burn and his ticker tick erratically.

If his family came first, he wouldn’t have a job that causes his little boy to cry about “getting my father back.”

If his team came first, he wouldn’t have pulled this bullshit a week before their bowl game, creating both an enormous short-term distraction and long-term uncertainty for at least a year’s worth of recruits.

In short, I disagree with Mack: College football does NOT need this self-absorbed, embarrassing flake.

hilarious

by Hookah on Dec 28, 2009 7:03 AM CST reply actions

Ripley, Urban wasn’t immersed in the depths of Hell (depending on your opinion of Gainesville, Florida). Thus, the Tebow didn’t need three days.

by NateHeupel on Dec 28, 2009 9:00 AM CST reply actions

I Can’t help but just feel pissed off by this whole thing, I actually thought there was something wrong with the guy, and I felt bad for always thinking he was a cocky bastard.. After this circus I think I dislike him and the entire florida program even more than I had before.. Either your In or your out, why would you put your team through this right before the bowl game, that’s selfish and irresponsible

by Travis on Dec 28, 2009 9:08 AM CST reply actions

I dunno about y’all, but I just changed my Sugar Bowl pick from Florida to Cincinnati.

I wasted valuable bar time Saturday worrying about this fuck. Time I can never have back. We even had some of the married members of The Bleu Creu out. Fucking charades.

I wish we’d have drawn Florida instead of Bama.

Due to the time constraints of running a major football program and serving as president pro tempore of the SEC drama club, I will no longer be able to devote the energy necessary to participate in BC discussions. I have given my heart and soul to public drama for the last 24 hours of my life. I have spent most of my waking hours giving or planning pressers. Effective immediately I will not be posting here again. As my wife will tell you, there is no chance I will change my mind.

I was just reading the General’s latest barkings about basketball. I know it’s not the sport I want to be reading about, but basketball is the next biggest sport after football. And the post had great energy. Some of the best all year. And while I had contemplated my previous decision exhaustively, sleeping on it has changed my mind. I’m back. You’re welcome.
