Mike Leach suspended for Alamo Bowl
Tech received a complaint from a player and his parents about his treatment by Leach after he was injured.
Insert plank walking joke here.
Ruffin McNeill will coach the team. We eagerly await the inside scoop from dedfischer.

I’ll repeat my question from the forum: why doesn’t Tech realize and appreciate what they have in Leach? They seem deadset on rolling him out of town and quickly returning to Baylor levels of football accomplishment.

Maybe they’re hoping that it will play like the Urban Meyer saga:

I’ll accept Mangino as a “Stoops coaching tree” product, but Leach was in Norman for one year and was with Hal Mumme before that. It was a pitstop, there was no influence from Stoops. He’s LaVell Edwards and Hal Mumme’s product.
Leavitt was a colleague at Kstate

If it was done to any kid, it was all kinds of stupid, if it was done to CJ’s kid it was nothing short of intentional self-destruction. That being said, I just hope that the player and parents are being truthful rather than drama queens and kings.

STATEMENT FROM JAMES FAMILY
The James family understands that Texas Tech University has undertaken an internal investigation. Since this situation affects our son and since the investigation is on-going, it would be inappropriate for us to speculate or provide additional information.
Mr. and Mrs. James took the step with great regret and after consideration and prayer to convey to the Texas Tech Administration that their son had been subjected to actions and treatment not consistent with common sense rules for safety and health. The James family believes this is a matter important to protect all the fine young men involved in Tech football and the University’s reputation for developing and educating young men and women.
Over the past year, there has been a greatly enhanced recognition of the dangers of concussions and the potential for long term physical damage to players. At virtually every level of football coaching, cases where children and young men have sustained concussions have generated serious discussion of the importance of correct treatment and diagnosis.
The entire James family is supportive of the University and looks forward to a resolution of the matter.

Adam James had requested a transfer to SMU before any of this happened, Leach declined the request citing his rule of not allowing any transfers within the state.
James received a hit to the head in practice and was sent to a dark quite place as a precaution. It would be really stupid for Tech’s board to fire Leach over this, but Tech wouldn’t be the first program the Pony has ruined.
If I’m June Jones I decline Adam’s request to transfer in, that family is nothing but problems.

Fascinating story. Obviously we don’t know all the facts but, given the suspension, is there any way that Leach stays at Tech? Does Tech fire him, is there a negotiated settlement, or does Leach quit? My guess is negotiated settlement.
Does Leach coach anywhere next season? Does he get a good job or is his careeer ruined? My guess is that he is done with Tech, does ot find another job in time for next season but that his career is not ruined (he should always be able to find work as an OC, at minimum)
Tech owes Leach an $800k bonus if Leach is employed by Tech on Jan 1, 2010. Is there any way that Tech fires Leach before then? Probably not.
Did the James kid actually have a concussion or not? In the NFL they do brain scans on all the players so they can compare pre and post injury scans to see how an injury has affected a player’s brain. Is this done in the Big 12? I don’t think so. If the James kid did not actually have a concussion, does that make it a lot tougher for Tech to fire Leach?
How long does the James kid stay on the team? How will his teammates treat him? The James kid wanted to transfer to SMU but Leach would not OK him playing imediately at SMU (i.e. the James kid would have to sit out the normal year when he transfers). The James family was upset with Leach for not cooperating, did this have any impact on this story?

I post over at the Shag under a different name, but I defended Leach over there and will here, too.
I’m sure he did something with the kid and a confined space, but since the James’s clearly have an incentive to exaggerate and smear him, and since the university seems to have love-hate relationship with Leach and is sensitive about his eccentricities, I think there might be more smoke than fire here.
Not to mention that since the media has recently been on such a “mean coach” witch hunt lately, Leach would have to be absolutely stupid to do anything as cruel as what some people are attributing to him here.
If it was as bad as some people say, then he should be fired, but I have a hard time yet believing that it is.

by BatesHorn on Dec 29, 2009 8:54 AM CST reply actions
I’m keeping an open mind on this until we get all of the details.
Pro-Leach:
1. The James kid had motive to bs about Leach because of the denied transfer.
2. No other players have come forward with similar tales.
3. There are not program rumors of the sort that surrounded Mangino.
4. The James kid background indicates a higher level of entitlement than usual.
Pro-James:
1. Leach is crazy, benign or not.
2. Leach clearly hates the James kid.
3. why would a kid make this sort of thing up when he knows the truth will come out?
4. Myers suspended Leach, leading me to suspect that other players corroborated something about the James kid’s story.

“After graduating with honors from BYU in 1983, Leach earned a master’s degree from the U.S. Sports Academy and his law degree from Pepperdine University, where he graduated in the top one-third of his class. "
Apparently he skipped the classes on “Care of Athletes” and “False Imprisonment” at each fine institution.

Ghost agree with all but:
“4. Myers suspended Leach, leading me to suspect that other players corroborated something about the James kid’s story.”
I’d make it:
4. Myers suspended Leach with lightning speed with no corroboration whatsoever in fear of the media fallout.
Also, a big difference between Leach & Mangino is that Leach’s former players are coming out of the woodwork to defend him, unlike Mangino’s who acted like Andy Dufresne climbing out of 500 yards of shit-smelling foulness to scream at the sky before getting to the business of fucking over the (obese) warden that had screwed their lives over for a few years.
I’m thinking Pony Jr. whined to daddy because he was embarrassed ‘n’ all but once Pony Sr. was in full “Leach & Tech won’t apologize??? I’m Roy L Fuchs goddammit!!” mode, it was too late to take it back.
