The BCS Championship open thread

It's on.

PASADENA, Calif. -- Neither Alabama or Texas has taken the field, but that should be starting in a few minutes.

The biggest ovation of the night took place a couple of minutes ago when a replay of Vince Young's game-winning touchdown run in the 2006 title game was flashed on the scoreboard.

Young's TD run got a much larger response than my colleague Ivan Maisel's very fine analysis of the play that took place immediately after Young's replay.

The Longhorn fans appear ready for the game.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:23 PM CST reply actions

Still think your guys’ fight song is one of the best.

by Mister Mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:24 PM CST reply actions

Texas plays the roll of Finland? WTF?

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 7:24 PM CST reply actions

Nice commercial timing.

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:25 PM CST reply actions

What the hell is this with Flea and Josh Groban?

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 7:26 PM CST reply actions

No shit. And Flea playing the National Anthem…wtf??

by Mister Mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:26 PM CST reply actions

McElroy’s from L.A?

by mookiepatookis on Jan 7, 2010 7:29 PM CST reply actions

This pregame shit is super bowl bad.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 7:29 PM CST reply actions

That’s a lot of fucking fireworks.

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:29 PM CST reply actions

Holy shit. How do these kids do it? I’m sitting on my couch with alcohol in me and I’m still nervous as all get out. I feel like I am about to puke.

Give em hell, young men.

by richut on Jan 7, 2010 7:30 PM CST reply actions

lets go fuck some shit up!

by hornybadger on Jan 7, 2010 7:30 PM CST reply actions

They’re making Keith Jackson flip his bus fare home. That’s mean.

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:30 PM CST reply actions

Sounds Like we have a bigger crowd

by New Braunfels Horn on Jan 7, 2010 7:31 PM CST reply actions

They win the toss and then end up doing what we wanted them to anyway. I like it. Surprised they didn’t lead with their defense.

by richut on Jan 7, 2010 7:31 PM CST reply actions

pray for our offensive line…. I know I am

by bob on Jan 7, 2010 7:31 PM CST reply actions

Does anyone else think that Saban looks like Bill Lumberg?

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:32 PM CST reply actions

Mmmmmkay. Didja’ get the memo?

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:33 PM CST reply actions

That’s good. False starts are good.

by parlin on Jan 7, 2010 7:34 PM CST reply actions

Damn straight skippy! Should have had him the first time though.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:35 PM CST reply actions

McElroy needs to get rid of that.

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:35 PM CST reply actions

Jordan Time.

by parlin on Jan 7, 2010 7:36 PM CST reply actions

Gideon!!!!!!!

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:37 PM CST reply actions

CTJ—you must forgive him.

by parlin on Jan 7, 2010 7:37 PM CST reply actions

Does Saban have money on the horns?

by bob on Jan 7, 2010 7:37 PM CST reply actions

is that not the most stupid play in history?

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 7:37 PM CST reply actions

Holy Christ! Nick Saban, genius

by Farmer Ted on Jan 7, 2010 7:37 PM CST reply actions

Gideon almost makes up for the Tech debacle.

What’s this? Saban thinks this kind of shit is necessary against the overmatched ’Horns?

Stoops must have rubbed off on him in practice this week.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:37 PM CST reply actions

Gideon!!!!

by Art Vandelay on Jan 7, 2010 7:37 PM CST reply actions

Shoulda just knocked the pass down. Except none of us would have done that in a million years.

by Farmer Ted on Jan 7, 2010 7:39 PM CST reply actions

When did you guys start to get a running game?

by Mister Mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:39 PM CST reply actions

No shit. What was I thinking? It was 4th down. Duh.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:40 PM CST reply actions

Blake Gideon apparently realized he had to atone for the Tech debacle. Meanwhile, ‘Bama looks like they completely underestimated Tre Newton’s speed.

by NateHeupel on Jan 7, 2010 7:40 PM CST reply actions

Shit.

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:40 PM CST reply actions

Shit.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 7:40 PM CST reply actions

Ouch

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 7:40 PM CST reply actions

How good is Gilbert?

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 7:41 PM CST reply actions

I guess you can’t blame Blake for not knocking it down. He’s got to have that one pick-that-wasn’t stuck in his head. That and this is the MNC. Unless they settle for a FG it’s forgiven.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:42 PM CST reply actions

probably at least as good as McElroy still

by dick on Jan 7, 2010 7:42 PM CST reply actions

i can’t believe Bama went for it on that 4th down. that is shit you do when you are desperate

by dick on Jan 7, 2010 7:42 PM CST reply actions

OH FUCK.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:43 PM CST reply actions

Holy hell, if Colt McCoy goes down, UT fans will get a taste of how OU fans felt all year. Except your line is more adept at pass blocking. And Garrett Gilbert looks more like a guy who actually takes coaching. So, really, it won’t be the same at all.

That hit didn’t look that bad. What the hell happened???

by NateHeupel on Jan 7, 2010 7:43 PM CST reply actions

Is it now that we bust out with a ground game?? Damn I hope Colt can come back.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:43 PM CST reply actions

I don’t like that spot on 1st.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:45 PM CST reply actions

Wish we had a TE

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 7:46 PM CST reply actions

This is serious for Colt

by Looney on Jan 7, 2010 7:47 PM CST reply actions

He needs to get back in there.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 7:47 PM CST reply actions

Wow. That really sucks. Man we really need some points on D.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:47 PM CST reply actions

Holy hell, they’re taking McCoy to the locker room. That does not look good.

by NateHeupel on Jan 7, 2010 7:47 PM CST reply actions

Play calling was too conservative with Gilbert. That won’t cut.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 7:47 PM CST reply actions

We can win this game with Gilbert.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 7:48 PM CST reply actions

Three points won’t be enough.

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:49 PM CST reply actions

extremely happy with the way we are running the ball still.

that 3rd and 2 run works 1% of the time against defenses with a pulse. worked great there

by dick on Jan 7, 2010 7:49 PM CST reply actions

So it’s a shoulder — do we know which one? If it’s his left, gotta shoot him up in the locker room and let him run out for his WIllis Reed moment to get the crowd in a frenzy.

by Farmer Ted on Jan 7, 2010 7:49 PM CST reply actions

this would be a great time for a 3 week rain delay

by bob on Jan 7, 2010 7:49 PM CST reply actions

Don’t get me wrong. I’m certainly rooting for Alabama, but I’d hate it for McCoy is he is out.

by NorthDallasSooner on Jan 7, 2010 7:49 PM CST reply actions

Thanks Nate. That’s some extreme schadenfreude oozing from your posts.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:49 PM CST reply actions

Wooo Hoooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:50 PM CST reply actions

I think we can win with Gilbert, too, but we are going to have to let him throw it.

Turnover!

by java on Jan 7, 2010 7:50 PM CST reply actions

Kindle is on our kickoff team.

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:51 PM CST reply actions

Gilbert does not look comfortable out there.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:51 PM CST reply actions

What sport is Alabama playing? Doesn’t look like football, and whatever it is they suck at it.

by Farmer Ted on Jan 7, 2010 7:51 PM CST reply actions

let gilbert pass!

by hornybadger on Jan 7, 2010 7:51 PM CST reply actions

bama does not deserve to win this game already

Gilbert has to throw it

We have to hope for the best

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 7:52 PM CST reply actions

Fucking Buckner.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 7:52 PM CST reply actions

Is Buckner afraid he is going to get hit?

by java on Jan 7, 2010 7:52 PM CST reply actions

Maybe a little behind him, but Buckner really kind of sucks.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:52 PM CST reply actions

Limp off, Buckner.

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:53 PM CST reply actions

Gilbert is ok, but get Buckner out of there. Put in everyone else.

by java on Jan 7, 2010 7:54 PM CST reply actions

My anticipated alcohol intake just went up considerably. And I have to drive to Dallas to buy it. What shitty act is playing halftime?

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:54 PM CST reply actions

And Buckner proves again why he will not play at all next year

by ransomstoddard on Jan 7, 2010 7:55 PM CST reply actions

We can win with Gilbert folks. Need everyone to play lights out. Confidence fellas.

by Art Vandelay on Jan 7, 2010 7:55 PM CST reply actions

Colt is done for the day.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 7:55 PM CST reply actions

That’s not good. He won’t be coming back. GD needs to let Gilbert pass. Alabama does not look very impressive on D thus far.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:55 PM CST reply actions

McCoy’s mom is hot when she is sad

by Farmer Ted on Jan 7, 2010 7:56 PM CST reply actions

Isn’t Vince on the sideline? Can Mack suit him up and put some white makeup on him?

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 7:56 PM CST reply actions

Great coverage.

by parlin on Jan 7, 2010 7:56 PM CST reply actions

Maybe Alabama’s line should consider holding.

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 7:57 PM CST reply actions

Fuck me. No Colt?

by Newy25 on Jan 7, 2010 7:57 PM CST reply actions

timing may be off, but gilbert is the better qb. imagine what it will mean to next season if we win the nc w/ gilbert tonite

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 7:57 PM CST reply actions

Dumb D

He is not going to run up the middle

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 7:58 PM CST reply actions

they cant stop our pass rush

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 7:58 PM CST reply actions

Hold ’em on 3rd!

by java on Jan 7, 2010 7:59 PM CST reply actions

Let Gilbert run the offense. We’ll be fine.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 7:59 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think the coaches believe that Gilbert is better.

They intentionally did not play him very much this year.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 7:59 PM CST reply actions

Our secondary is fucking laughing.

by HenryJames on Jan 7, 2010 8:00 PM CST reply actions

Guess there just weren’t any opportunities against Utep to get Gilbert some meaningful snaps

by ransomstoddard on Jan 7, 2010 8:01 PM CST reply actions

Come on! Give Vince Chiles’ jersey!!!!!!!!!

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:02 PM CST reply actions

this Colt situation is what ransom’s been waiting for all year

but really, they should have played gilbert more this year

by dick on Jan 7, 2010 8:02 PM CST reply actions

This is becoming very pathetic. The coaches need to trust Gilbert.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:03 PM CST reply actions

We can win this game with Gilbert, no doubt.

BTW, who is the 3rd QB, that walk-on kid from Monterrey, Mexico?

by jdlooneyii on Jan 7, 2010 8:03 PM CST reply actions

We have to give Gilbert a fucking chance.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 8:04 PM CST reply actions

Mack Brown’s worst nightmare.

He hates to play freshmen at any position.

He and GD will dumb our O down to no chance to win this game.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:04 PM CST reply actions

It looks more like the coaches need to trust the OL. WTF gives? I’m going to have to start chugging this Beam neat.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:04 PM CST reply actions

sorry, you guys are fucked unless your D finds a way to win this

by commish on Jan 7, 2010 8:04 PM CST reply actions

Greg, get out of the fetal position!

by java on Jan 7, 2010 8:05 PM CST reply actions

omfg if we dont let gilbert throw on first or second my head is going to explode

by hornybadger on Jan 7, 2010 8:05 PM CST reply actions

I agree with the Bama fans booing the pussy rugby kick by us

by ransomstoddard on Jan 7, 2010 8:05 PM CST reply actions

Too bad Mack Brown failed to develop Chiles.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:05 PM CST reply actions

folks, this is the best thing that could have happened to us long term.

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:05 PM CST reply actions

GD will dumb our O down

Wow.

by parlin on Jan 7, 2010 8:06 PM CST reply actions

GD does not believe that Gilbert can even complete the little pass to the wide out for no yardage.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:06 PM CST reply actions

GD is going to wait until he’s FORCED to let Gilbert throw. Fuck me.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:07 PM CST reply actions

“GD will dumb our O down”

is that possible?

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:07 PM CST reply actions

that is like killing a corpse

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:08 PM CST reply actions

Offensive PI.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:08 PM CST reply actions

If GD wants to be conservative he should run the Wild Horn with Chiles over and over and over.

Meanwhile the D is regressing to mean.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:08 PM CST reply actions

Yeah zzzzzzzz….but not during the championship game

by Mister Mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:08 PM CST reply actions

Muck has already missed a half dozen tackles

by ransomstoddard on Jan 7, 2010 8:09 PM CST reply actions

The D has gone belly up.

We’re fucked.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:09 PM CST reply actions

we’re gonna win. a win w/ Gilbert does miracles for our future

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:09 PM CST reply actions

Go to hell Boxley.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 8:10 PM CST reply actions

“Best thing”??

I am telling you that if Gilbert were any good he would have not only played more, he would have thrown more passes.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:11 PM CST reply actions

Davis has got to give Gilbert a chance. Run, run, pass is not going to work.

by Huckleberry on Jan 7, 2010 8:11 PM CST reply actions

Bama isn’t going to pass again all night if they can keep running the ball like this

by commish on Jan 7, 2010 8:11 PM CST reply actions

It’s not just ‘Let Gilbert Pass." It’s Let Gilbert Pass Down Field. ffs.

by Colby on Jan 7, 2010 8:11 PM CST reply actions

The D will be ok. Muschamp will chew on them a little in a minute.

by java on Jan 7, 2010 8:11 PM CST reply actions

Can anyone IMAGINE what would have happened to OU if Bradford went down in the championship game last year?

Come on! Hook ’Em!!!!

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:11 PM CST reply actions

gilbert’s finally getting meaningful snaps!

by jon on Jan 7, 2010 8:12 PM CST reply actions

Can anyone IMAGINE what would have happened to OU if Bradford went down in the championship game last year?

They would have lost. Why?

by Texas_Dawg on Jan 7, 2010 8:12 PM CST reply actions

Box, you have obviously havent picked-up on the Mack Brown MO

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:12 PM CST reply actions

Boxley, you have no idea what you’re talking about.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 8:12 PM CST reply actions

They would have lost. Why?

In a fashion that might have, in spite of the SEC nose-up-the-ass love, that might have actually looked impressive.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:13 PM CST reply actions

that was a false start on Cody

by commish on Jan 7, 2010 8:14 PM CST reply actions

How about a Willis Reed moment for Colt in the 2nd Half? Keep the faith!

by Art Vandelay on Jan 7, 2010 8:14 PM CST reply actions

Well, ghost, time will tell.

But we both know that the score should be 14-0 right now.

And there is a reason its not.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:15 PM CST reply actions

Yep, let’s take the kids glove off. If we lose by Garret throwing picks, it’a alright by me.

by uthookem on Jan 7, 2010 8:16 PM CST reply actions

Davis is a fucking asshole

by ransomstoddard on Jan 7, 2010 8:16 PM CST reply actions

brilliant. lets run a dive into mount cody

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:16 PM CST reply actions

MOTHERFUCKER!!!! Pass on fucking 1st or 2nd down! Someone is going to have to turn on a profanity filter here if this keeps up.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:17 PM CST reply actions

Davis will not let Gilbert win this game.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 8:17 PM CST reply actions

How many times do we have to run that up the middle nothing before we realize it won’t work?

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:17 PM CST reply actions

Thanks for finally calling something against an offensive linemen.

by uthookem on Jan 7, 2010 8:17 PM CST reply actions

if you string enough 1 yd lines together you’ll eventually score

by bob on Jan 7, 2010 8:17 PM CST reply actions

Legit call.

by uthookem on Jan 7, 2010 8:17 PM CST reply actions

ok. long yardage needed. lets run a dive

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:17 PM CST reply actions

Chiles will save us.

by parlin on Jan 7, 2010 8:18 PM CST reply actions

Herbstreit just called the Texas offense “predictable.”

by Mister Mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:18 PM CST reply actions

Is he hurt?

by java on Jan 7, 2010 8:19 PM CST reply actions

Fuck me. Good Gawd. We DO have WRs that can catch a football don’t we? This is downright fucking low, even for GD.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:19 PM CST reply actions

gilberts hurt

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:19 PM CST reply actions

abortion gd

by hornybadger on Jan 7, 2010 8:19 PM CST reply actions

GD is limiting Gilbert to what he might be able to do under the circumstances.

Not at all irrational.

Just frustrating for all of us.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:19 PM CST reply actions

It’s time to put Chiles in and run the Vince offense if we keep this shit up with GG.

by uthookem on Jan 7, 2010 8:19 PM CST reply actions

Good coverage.

Gilbert can’t be hurt.

by parlin on Jan 7, 2010 8:19 PM CST reply actions

brilliant boxley

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:20 PM CST reply actions

Gilbert looks like he’s hurt.

by Mister Mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:20 PM CST reply actions

i guess that is what he has been doing with mccoy all year also

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:20 PM CST reply actions

Colt is healthy for 3 WHOLE YEARS, now 1 quarter into the title game, and TWO QB’s are down.

Incredible.

by Jorty on Jan 7, 2010 8:20 PM CST reply actions

This is sickening. I hope we fire macwhorter at LAX.

by Newy25 on Jan 7, 2010 8:21 PM CST reply actions

This is your moment, Sherrod Harris.

by Woody Bombay on Jan 7, 2010 8:21 PM CST reply actions

Other teams can bring in no name freshman and do ok. Not Davis

by ransomstoddard on Jan 7, 2010 8:21 PM CST reply actions

Of course.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:21 PM CST reply actions

sherrod finally getting meaningful snaps!

by jon on Jan 7, 2010 8:21 PM CST reply actions

GD has to just run the offense. He is going to let the whole team down in a minute.

I keep thinking they are just waiting for the x-rays on Colt, but they must have them by now.

by java on Jan 7, 2010 8:22 PM CST reply actions

Boxley. Just what do you know about Gilbert? If you think he sucks, why don’t you think about why he sucks. Did you not watch all those games where there were great opportunities to get him some snaps?

Personally I say “Let’s find the fuck out if he sucks” because this game plan ain’t friggin’ working. It’s time to let him air a few out, Goddamnit.

I’m shutting TFU until GD lets him throw.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:22 PM CST reply actions

Maybe we should run some wild-horn???

by Orangechipper on Jan 7, 2010 8:22 PM CST reply actions

Jorty, Colt was badly injured and lost to ksu and a$m not too long ago.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:22 PM CST reply actions

“Other teams can bring in no name freshman and do ok. Not Davis”

that’s because crappy play calling is the same regardless of the qb

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:23 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think he sucks.

GD does.

And presumably has his reasons.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:23 PM CST reply actions

Bill Boxley – that was 2006, 3 whole seasons ago.

by Jorty on Jan 7, 2010 8:23 PM CST reply actions

Hey Boom: THEY’RE GONNA RUN THE FUCKING BALL

by ransomstoddard on Jan 7, 2010 8:23 PM CST reply actions

WHAT A PLAY

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:24 PM CST reply actions

We MUST flip the field here. We don’t need points, but we need at least two first downs.

by uthookem on Jan 7, 2010 8:25 PM CST reply actions

Kid can make himself a legend tonight.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 7, 2010 8:26 PM CST reply actions

I swear to God. If GD calls two straight run plays, I’m turning off the TV and jumping from the 3rd floor balcony.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:26 PM CST reply actions

no way we can win playing as an sec offense against this d. we got to do what we do!

by hornybadger on Jan 7, 2010 8:26 PM CST reply actions

ransom, I guess he heard you. thanks for letting him know.

by java on Jan 7, 2010 8:26 PM CST reply actions

Didn’t Jeff Hostetler win a Super Bowl for the Giants when Phil Simms was hurt?

by Bob Wells on Jan 7, 2010 8:27 PM CST reply actions

I hope we fire macwhorter at LAX.

I saw this with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in Heat.

by parlin on Jan 7, 2010 8:27 PM CST reply actions

yep, we need to just ‘let er rip!’

by java on Jan 7, 2010 8:28 PM CST reply actions

Gotta LOVE Kindle.

Come on, GD, turn the kid loose.

You recruited him to play ball so see if he can.

No guts. No glory.

by Bill Boxley on Jan 7, 2010 8:28 PM CST reply actions

Does Sherrod give us a better chance tonight than Gilbert? We are going to need to escape the rush and play calling.

by Art Vandelay on Jan 7, 2010 8:28 PM CST reply actions

the downfield pass. what an innovation

by zzzizzzy on Jan 7, 2010 8:29 PM CST reply actions

Saban is thanking his lucky stars about Colt (and GD). Fucking shit.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 8:29 PM CST reply actions

Pathetic performance by Gilbert

by ransomstoddard on Jan 7, 2010 8:29 PM CST reply actions

This sucks.

Right idea. Not great execution. We need to do it again!

Nice 12 yard punt by Tucker. Good grief

by ransomstoddard on Jan 7, 2010 8:31 PM CST reply actions

You would have to get into Mack’s head to understand how he manages personnel including QB.

I can’t do that, so all I can go on is what I have seen on the field of play.

It’s all good. Let Gilbert get the speed of the game down. He can do this.

There has to be a reason we are not seeing all those short passes to the sidelines that are GD’s bread and butter.

Any idea?

i am not sure he can. we need some special teams or defensive TD

by dick on Jan 7, 2010 8:33 PM CST reply actions

Make no mistake about it. We can win this game. Their defense ain’t that scary. So we can’t run against them. We can’t run against anyone. Three receiver sets, in a pro formation with running backs running out of the backfield to the open spaces after blocking on the edge.
This can be done.

by Colby on Jan 7, 2010 8:33 PM CST reply actions

Yep, GG is getting better with each possession. Now Saban is going to go run, run, run, and we need a big stand.

Charlie Tanner played the worst half of football possibly of any single player I have ever seen for a Mack Brown team.

On that pick he was beaten so badly his man picked off a shovel pass. Think about that. Then the false start. Then the clipping penalty.

Now Gilbert is literally in tears on the sideline. The only positive coming from this disgrace is the eventual firing of our offensive line coach.

by Orangechipper on Jan 7, 2010 9:06 PM CST reply actions

by Texas_Dawg on Jan 7, 2010 9:06 PM CST reply actions

Unfortunately, due to horrible coaching, neither you nor I know whether Gilbert is a good player. And, again, thanks to coaching he’s fucked. Sorry. I just call ’em like I see ’em.

All I’ve seen from him so far are bad passes and mistakes. Well, minus one that should have been a TD and that’s on the WRs.

I think that it’s going to take a pretty stout sense of humor, irony, fate, and OC hatred to be able to sit through the rest of this one.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 9:07 PM CST reply actions

by Diego on Jan 7, 2010 9:07 PM CST reply actions

So, after all the ragging we do on Stoops for leaving his starters in to pad their numbers, are we going to face the music on Colt McCoy? Gilbert didn’t play because Davis’ shitty offense wasn’t producing Heisman numbers fast enough.

That and the fact that Texas steadfastly refused to develop a running game since Young left mean that this is a strategic error on Brown’s part. Their decisions left them vulnerable, and now Texas is being humiliated on a national stage.

Nice going, Mack. Time to retire.

No, I mean like right now: retire. Hand the keys to Muschamp in the locker room and find a nice golf course that ’s open this late in Pasadena and start your retirement early.

I don’t understand the Gilbert bashing either. He’s not in synch w/ Williams and Shipley, but he was close. He also got downfield to block and tried to bring down what turned into a pick six.

Nothing wrong with Gilbert, he just hasn’t had enough time to do what he’s being asked to do now.

by spider on Jan 7, 2010 9:14 PM CST reply actions

Enough Ransom!

Gilbert was THE top QB recruit. Calling a timeout and running the Brett Robin special isn’t his fault. That is terrible coaching. Period.

Gilbert has skills. The coaches didn’t give him enough snaps to get him game ready. GD wasn’t prepared to have him play, and he (GD) doesn’t think well on his feet or otherwise.

Our offense has been built around Colt for 2+ years, and GD doesn’t have a plan tonight for Coltless offense. Our only chance (post Colt injury) was to keep it close and try to get a defense or ST TD, and now GD has put Coach Boom in a bad spot.

Cue the Greg Davis hate engine. I’m so damn sad for Colt. Just put my 8 year old to bed and he has his Colt jersey hanging over his bed.

As for the rest of this abortion of a title match… it’s plain that the Horns were so blindsided by this possibility, which nobody anticipated worth a shit including even the modern Cassandra (aka Scip), that they simply cannot cope.

Prior to McCoy leaving, they were crushing Ingram (“Stoned!” — Musberger), had intercepted McElroy, were moving the ball at will, had maneuvered inside the Tide ten, got a TD which unfortunately was called back, the O-line was doing splendidly, and indeed the Horns were sacking the shit out of McElroy, who didn’t seem happy to be on such familiar terms with the Earth.

On the subject of McCoy’s departure, I admit it seems a little thin. My first reaction was that someone must’ve hurt his feelings.

No doubt there’s more to it; this is going to cripple his sense of self-worth, national rep, and immediate earning potential.

As for Gilbert - that’s plain. Headlights -> deer. Had no more psychological prep than anyone else and simply can’t deal with being waterboarded in the coldest possible pool.

I still feel Texas has a shot to win this thing if they can get the Norse deities to suit up.

Mjolnir flung multiple times directly into the balls of McClain and Cody and Arenas and Sabam would go a very long way toward equalizing the game.

We can play for pride. Yes, we will have to hear Alabama crap and SEC chants, but that’s life. The option call was stupid, but I thought it was stupid against everybody we played since Colt got hurt a KSU. I always wondered why put 95% of your offense at risk..

Put the Major in.

by mike on Jan 7, 2010 9:39 PM CST reply actions

Probably a lone voice in the wilderness here, but I actually don’t think the lack of live reps for Gilbert this year was a bad decision. You guys were on a peak cycle this year, and you had one goal: to win the national title. Riding a stud horse like McCoy in a year like this — and giving him a Heisman shot — isn’t crazy. Why? Because if McCoy gets hurt, you’re fucked anyway. Gilbert wasn’t going to win you the title this year no matter how many reps he got. So ride your horse, hope like hell he doesn’t get hurt, maybe win him a Heisman and see what happens. If a fluke injury like this happens, it wasn’t meant to be.

Look on the bright side, ya’ll get to keep Tim around now! That guy is spot on 100% on his football predictions.

I would hate to pile on after a tough loss, but let’s all be honest ya’ll deserve this. With all the "We’re Texas" arrogant bullshit, that kind of stuff always comes back around. I don’t want to hear any UT fans saying you lost because Colt went down, the only reason you were even playing in that game was because of all the injuries in the Big 12 South this year. If Sam Bradford doesn’t go down, or Texas Tech has more than 1 DE there is no way UT is even in the title game. UT was lucky all season and had the easiest path to the title game in the History of football and you blew it.

As for the UT fans complaining about penalties and criminals, your entire program is built off of getting all the calls and players like Houston, and Kindle who are criminals, so STFU!

Shipley, Houston, and Kindle are the UT team, and they are not coming back next year.

Gilbert’s problem is that he needs glasses or contacts, he was straining to see the sideline play calls and the WR’s the entire game.
-————————————————————-

Tim, your time of pulling for your own team is over. Leach is gone, son. All you have left is the joy you feel when another team fails.

Which makes you a pathetic cock blocker.

coulda…woulda…shoulda…saban is a primadonna and my hat’s off to the horns.

When mccoy got hurt I thought we were looking at at 42-6. Davis (who I hate) and Gilbert kept us in the game. It’s not Gilbert’s fault they put up 37. Our D had the chance to give us the ball back with 4:00 minutes left and they failed. They played fine. But, given the circumstances, it was a tall order both on offense and defense. This game was invaluable to Gilbert for next year. And for all you D-bags bashing him…up yours! He performed better than a true freshman could be expected to.

We’ll be back in a year or two.

This whole game was really disappointing. The 24-point 2nd quarter “outburst” from Bama was largely a result of field position because Gilbert couldn’t land a first down and hadn’t yet settled into the game. You sort of just felt like the kids ran out of time.

I wouldn’t push the blame of the 37 points on the D, and not just because of the defensive touchdown Bama scored. The D held them to 260 yards and 4 YPC on the ground. 5 turnovers and bad field position turned those meager numbers into 37 points.

Gilbert did all he could do, it wasn’t his fault Davis didn’t find in necessary to play him any meaningful snaps all season long.

Richut, the D didn’t give up 37? I know offense didn’t give the D the best chances. But championship teams make plays. Our D is badass…..badass! But, there is noone to blame here. Colt got knocked out and showed class after the game. You still gotta play the game. Our D did what they could, but it was a tall order. Blow me, Richut. Look at the game realistically.

by Pederast Hanrahan on Jan 7, 2010 11:45 PM CST reply actions

i would even argue that the D didn’t give up 37. 1 pick 6. a fumble inside the 5 and an interception near the redzone….makes it tough. they did break down a few times though but i expected that. I thought we’ld be able to overcome it. what hurt was when our o-line shit the bed at such an awful time.
gamechangers: mccoy down. malcom dropping a TD. the above 3 plays. not converting TD within the 2 yardline and richardson and ingram kicking our ass in the 2rd Q. to a lessor degree, our receivers not catching stuff that hit their hands.
things i like….gilbert not quiting and firing off 2 TD’s (should have been 3). adaptation of our O (within the possibility of GD), defense 2nd half performance for the most part. hitting the shit outta that little bitch bama QB who was a total fuckin’ non-factor as were all the bama receivers.
proud of those guys, kept fighting when the most apocolyptic scenario was put upon them and came back into the game.

I will go on record saying that if McCoy was in, we win. They have a great D, but McCoy would have picked them apart with the amount of time the o-line was giving Gilbert tonight.

And I will also go on record as saying that I think Greg Davis called about as good a game as he could given the circumstances. We came out aggressive. Losing Colt basically made him call the game with one hand tied behind his back.

If there is a bright side, it is that Gilbert grew up a lot tonight. He will not face a situation next year that is more high pressure than this one.

First of all, fuck you Tim. We’ll see you back here in nine years when the shit stain of a school you love has another miracle season. Second, thank you Huck and the handful of Longhorn fans that didn’t watch this game from the emergency room due to their excessively bleeding vaginas. I haven’t seen this many crying, mewling pussies on this board ever.

As much as I usually share the general hatred for Greg Davis, he came out with some fairly original play calling. Shit, he actually called some effective run plays. There’s not a whole fucking lot he could do about the game plan being scrapped during the first drive. And get off Gilbert’s ass. It’s a sign of how fucking pathetic your lives must be to demand such absolute perfection from a kid that has never played a meaningful snap in college. Get out more, go try to accomplish something yourselves, and maybe gain some perspective. Gilbert grew up a lot in the second half. Texas as a team showed great class and determination. Sure there were mistakes made but we scored 21 points on a very good defense with a frosh backup, and held them to no scores until close to the end of the fourth quarter. I hate that we lost but I’m proud of the character the ’Horns showed, there was no give-up in them.

I know emotions run high during games but there’s a point where some people go from enthusiastic fans to pathetic, whiny bitches and it’s not pretty. To each their own, I’m looking forward to next season and my 8 month jones starts now, just going to have to turn my attention to basketball for a while I guess.

Proud of our team and GG. They did an amazing job of battling back to within 3 and a chance to take the lead. . Future looks very bright.

It is amazing to think how the game would have played out differently if Malcolm holds onto that pass for a TD, and Monroe (?) doesn’t bobble the crap out of the shuttle pass. I was astounded at Mcelroy’s stat line at the end of the game 6-11 wow. I feel cheated not getting to see how Colt would have played in this game, how the Offensive game plan would have evolved with him in there. But that’s football.

God bless Colt. Thanks for the great 4 years, man. Best of luck in the NFL.

Saban has ZERO class for scoring that last TD. Take a knee you prick. If we call time out, then run it in. Whatever.

I don’t see us making another run for it until 2012. As shit as our o-line was this year, they’ll prove a better option than the freshman and sophomores that will replace them and take time to gel.
Nothing’s more important than a great o-line. Look at ou this year versus last year.

btw, thanks Mack. I for one don’t question the play call at the end of the first half – if it had gained 10-15 yards, as that play can do, we’re at the 50 with 20s left, with a chance to put it in field goal range to change some of the momentum before halftime.

It was aggressive and it backfired. We started scoring when we became aggressive on offense. Mistakes will happen with such a philosophy, but it beats Tressel-ball. So fuck you Lee Corso.

Thanks for the four years Colt…sorry you didn’t get the chance to carve up Nick Saban’s defense better than Gilbert did.

Gilbert stares down his WRs like a dog drooling after steaks. On that last sack-fumble, I’m pretty sure he locked on to someone on the right side, thus ensuring that even from the shotgun, he was completely blindsided by the blitzer. Buckner’s turn-around-and-panic-when-no-hot-route-ball-is-coming look was my feeling about 1/4 sec after the snap when I saw Gilbert’s back and the start of the blitzing motion. I’m going to remember the score of this game as 21-24.

Special teams were great. More sacks for the defense if Bama had trusted their passing game. When the secondary cheats up on the run, Richardson’s TD play can happen.

Welcome to the big show, Gilbert. Stick around for three years. We’ll get you some receivers.

Ransom-

You need to grow up or stop posting. Your refusal to ever be positive is infuriating.

I’m proud as hell of Gilbert and the entire team. GG is going be a great one and he grew by leaps and bounds today. I told you bastards the second half would be ours and it really was.

I’m a little frustrated we didn’t get the ball to Monroe and Goodwin a little more on the edges, where they had a lot of success. I’m guessing we’ll work to shorten Gilbert’s throwing motion over the off-season. Otherwise, except for the shovel pass, I can"t complain too much about coaching. Our receivers didn’t execute, but that’s not on the coaches.

I’m ready for some new blood on the O-line. And we have to get a replacement for Gideon – he took terrible angles, gave up the long TD, and didn’t tackle well at all. Also, thank God for our incoming crop of receivers – everyone of them may play. Similarly, Traylon Shead needs to show up ready to get 15 carries a game because it’s pretty clear that we do not have a feature back on the roster this year.

All that said, we showed a ton of heart. It was a 3 point game with 2 minutes left, and we were playing without our MVP. Great season y’all.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 8, 2010 8:20 AM CST reply actions

Saban is a dick, but I don’t consider that last TD “running it up.”

This is the national championship game — they are running straight dives — it is our job to stop it.

Mack probably takes a knee in that situation — but I really don’t think there are many, if any, other BCS coaches would have as well.

Agreed. Hilariously, their dive was the one play we couldn’t stop. And they didn’t run it enough. But when they were trying to just kill clock it was further exposed.

For the record, fuck those Big East refs in the ear.
