PrintPASADENA, Calif. -- Neither Alabama or Texas has taken the field, but that should be starting in a few minutes.
The biggest ovation of the night took place a couple of minutes ago when a replay of Vince Young's game-winning touchdown run in the 2006 title game was flashed on the scoreboard.
Young's TD run got a much larger response than my colleague Ivan Maisel's very fine analysis of the play that took place immediately after Young's replay.
The Longhorn fans appear ready for the game.

In the replay, it looked like he hit him at the back of the right shoulder blade. I’m hoping he didn’t break something. An x-ray wouldn’t show soft tissue damage. After they got the x-ray, his dad went to the locker room. I hope Colt is ok.

So, after all the ragging we do on Stoops for leaving his starters in to pad their numbers, are we going to face the music on Colt McCoy? Gilbert didn’t play because Davis’ shitty offense wasn’t producing Heisman numbers fast enough.
That and the fact that Texas steadfastly refused to develop a running game since Young left mean that this is a strategic error on Brown’s part. Their decisions left them vulnerable, and now Texas is being humiliated on a national stage.

Gilbert was THE top QB recruit. Calling a timeout and running the Brett Robin special isn’t his fault. That is terrible coaching. Period.
Gilbert has skills. The coaches didn’t give him enough snaps to get him game ready. GD wasn’t prepared to have him play, and he (GD) doesn’t think well on his feet or otherwise.
Our offense has been built around Colt for 2+ years, and GD doesn’t have a plan tonight for Coltless offense. Our only chance (post Colt injury) was to keep it close and try to get a defense or ST TD, and now GD has put Coach Boom in a bad spot.
Cue the Greg Davis hate engine. I’m so damn sad for Colt. Just put my 8 year old to bed and he has his Colt jersey hanging over his bed.

Prior to McCoy leaving, they were crushing Ingram (“Stoned!” — Musberger), had intercepted McElroy, were moving the ball at will, had maneuvered inside the Tide ten, got a TD which unfortunately was called back, the O-line was doing splendidly, and indeed the Horns were sacking the shit out of McElroy, who didn’t seem happy to be on such familiar terms with the Earth.
On the subject of McCoy’s departure, I admit it seems a little thin. My first reaction was that someone must’ve hurt his feelings.
No doubt there’s more to it; this is going to cripple his sense of self-worth, national rep, and immediate earning potential.
As for Gilbert - that’s plain. Headlights -> deer. Had no more psychological prep than anyone else and simply can’t deal with being waterboarded in the coldest possible pool.

Our D had the chance to give us the ball back with 4:00 minutes left and they failed. They played fine. But, given the circumstances, it was a tall order both on offense and defense. This game was invaluable to Gilbert for next year. And for all you D-bags bashing him…up yours! He performed better than a true freshman could be expected to.

i would even argue that the D didn’t give up 37. 1 pick 6. a fumble inside the 5 and an interception near the redzone….makes it tough. they did break down a few times though but i expected that. I will go on record saying that if McCoy was in, we win. They have a great D, but McCoy would have picked them apart with the amount of time the o-line was giving Gilbert tonight.
And I will also go on record as saying that I think Greg Davis called about as good a game as he could given the circumstances. We came out aggressive. Losing Colt basically made him call the game with one hand tied behind his back.
If there is a bright side, it is that Gilbert grew up a lot tonight. He will not face a situation next year that is more high pressure than this one.

First of all, fuck you Tim. We’ll see you back here in nine years when the shit stain of a school you love has another miracle season. Second, thank you Huck and the handful of Longhorn fans that didn’t watch this game from the emergency room due to their excessively bleeding vaginas. I haven’t seen this many crying, mewling pussies on this board ever.
As much as I usually share the general hatred for Greg Davis, he came out with some fairly original play calling. Shit, he actually called some effective run plays. There’s not a whole fucking lot he could do about the game plan being scrapped during the first drive. And get off Gilbert’s ass. It’s a sign of how fucking pathetic your lives must be to demand such absolute perfection from a kid that has never played a meaningful snap in college. Get out more, go try to accomplish something yourselves, and maybe gain some perspective. Gilbert grew up a lot in the second half. Texas as a team showed great class and determination. Sure there were mistakes made but we scored 21 points on a very good defense with a frosh backup, and held them to no scores until close to the end of the fourth quarter. I hate that we lost but I’m proud of the character the ’Horns showed, there was no give-up in them.
I know emotions run high during games but there’s a point where some people go from enthusiastic fans to pathetic, whiny bitches and it’s not pretty. To each their own, I’m looking forward to next season and my 8 month jones starts now, just going to have to turn my attention to basketball for a while I guess.

Forgot to say good game to Alabama, they played hard and have a great team. Fuck Nick Saban for that last touchdown, it was totally unnecessary. Mack might forget it but Coach Boom won’t. And fuck ESPN commentators, they had me wishing that we had recruited Chiasson just so we could turn him loose with a full toolbox on those motherfuckers.

Good calls, AZHorn. We’ll have an outside chance at the national title hunt next year, and the inside track for our next title at the Sugar Bowl in 2011-12.
Let’s hope we can be satisfied with a long run into the tourney by the basketball team, and another shot in Omaha (where we’ll have a chance to win the last CWS in Rosenblatt, seeing as how we won the first CWS in Rosenblatt).
Here’s to a great season by the Texas Longhorns. I’ll be wearing my burnt orange tomorrow with pride!

We played as well as we could have under the circumstances and I’m proud of the team.
Am I disappointed? Hell yes.
Am I pissed and ready to break things and cry and call out others for not sharing in my rage at the world? No.
The team did everything they could and that’s all we can ask. We’ll be back next year and we’re lucky to have Mack who made us into something other than a flash in the pan who only gets a shot every 20 years or so.
Sometimes you just lose. It’s part of life. And if you expect to win every single one, you will die bitter and alone.

Good game by ’bama. COngrats. You played a solid game and did what you needed to win. Ingram is SOLID. Great vision and power.
Proud of our team and GG. They did an amazing job of battling back to within 3 and a chance to take the lead. . Future looks very bright.
It is amazing to think how the game would have played out differently if Malcolm holds onto that pass for a TD, and Monroe (?) doesn’t bobble the crap out of the shuttle pass. I was astounded at Mcelroy’s stat line at the end of the game 6-11 wow. I feel cheated not getting to see how Colt would have played in this game, how the Offensive game plan would have evolved with him in there. But that’s football.
God bless Colt. Thanks for the great 4 years, man. Best of luck in the NFL.

I don’t see us making another run for it until 2012. As shit as our o-line was this year, they’ll prove a better option than the freshman and sophomores that will replace them and take time to gel.
Nothing’s more important than a great o-line. Look at ou this year versus last year.
btw, thanks Mack. I for one don’t question the play call at the end of the first half – if it had gained 10-15 yards, as that play can do, we’re at the 50 with 20s left, with a chance to put it in field goal range to change some of the momentum before halftime.
It was aggressive and it backfired. We started scoring when we became aggressive on offense. Mistakes will happen with such a philosophy, but it beats Tressel-ball. So fuck you Lee Corso.

Also, don’t really have a problem with Saban scoring the touchdown. He doesn’t want a split national championship with Boise State. So he tries to run it up a bit. Everyone knows we win with Colt in there.

Thanks for the four years Colt…sorry you didn’t get the chance to carve up Nick Saban’s defense better than Gilbert did.
Gilbert stares down his WRs like a dog drooling after steaks. On that last sack-fumble, I’m pretty sure he locked on to someone on the right side, thus ensuring that even from the shotgun, he was completely blindsided by the blitzer. Buckner’s turn-around-and-panic-when-no-hot-route-ball-is-coming look was my feeling about 1/4 sec after the snap when I saw Gilbert’s back and the start of the blitzing motion. I’m going to remember the score of this game as 21-24.
Special teams were great. More sacks for the defense if Bama had trusted their passing game. When the secondary cheats up on the run, Richardson’s TD play can happen.
Welcome to the big show, Gilbert. Stick around for three years. We’ll get you some receivers.

I’m proud as hell of Gilbert and the entire team. GG is going be a great one and he grew by leaps and bounds today. I told you bastards the second half would be ours and it really was.
I’m a little frustrated we didn’t get the ball to Monroe and Goodwin a little more on the edges, where they had a lot of success. I’m guessing we’ll work to shorten Gilbert’s throwing motion over the off-season. Otherwise, except for the shovel pass, I can"t complain too much about coaching. Our receivers didn’t execute, but that’s not on the coaches.
I’m ready for some new blood on the O-line. And we have to get a replacement for Gideon – he took terrible angles, gave up the long TD, and didn’t tackle well at all. Also, thank God for our incoming crop of receivers – everyone of them may play. Similarly, Traylon Shead needs to show up ready to get 15 carries a game because it’s pretty clear that we do not have a feature back on the roster this year.
All that said, we showed a ton of heart. It was a 3 point game with 2 minutes left, and we were playing without our MVP. Great season y’all.

Saban is a dick, but I don’t consider that last TD “running it up.”
This is the national championship game — they are running straight dives — it is our job to stop it.
Mack probably takes a knee in that situation — but I really don’t think there are many, if any, other BCS coaches would have as well.

Saban didn’t “run up the score”. But it was a move that showed a lack of sportsmanship. That said, we should have absolutely stopped them. The defense didn’t play all that well.

Agreed. Hilariously, their dive was the one play we couldn’t stop. And they didn’t run it enough. But when they were trying to just kill clock it was further exposed.
