Overheard on the Longhorn internets
i like earl thomas but i don't think he is going to be a great safety in the NFL. he gave up on the TD that we gave up against a&m where fuller caught it in traffic. i was at the game and i saw thomas make a beeline for the ball and i jumped up thinking he was going to pick it (johnson put too much air under the ball) but he didn't even try to make a play for the ball. he had a great year with 8 picks but i don't think he is as good as mi. griffin or huff. he is more replaceable than those 2 guys were. my 2 cents. i wish him well though.

Could be a true statement, because I think he’s going to make a great corner in the league.

It’s a silly comment, but I do wonder about his size if a team actually projects him to safety. And on that play, he didn’t give up, but he did decide to go for the pick rather than knocking the ball down, which resulted in the touchdown.

I think he saw that A. Williams had good coverage on the play and thought that he’d pick it or knock it down.

I like Earl Thomas’ game and what he brings to the field but you gotta admit, I tackle better than he does.

Actually Deion, you’re now even dumber than I thought.

Thomas would beat Griffin or Huff by 3 days on a Soduku puzzle. And, he can run. I hope he’s still around when the Cowboys pick. He’ll be a better option than Sensabaugh or Hamlin some day.

Won’t Dallas be picking somewhere around #25? I think he’ll be long gone.

I said it once, I’ll say it again. He’s Antoine Winfield, which means he’s a bad muthashutyomouf.
That quote up top is just plain stupid. Thomas doesn’t give up on plays. Reference the year before against Aggie when he took the angle on a long run and came from the other side of the field. He missed a tackle every now and then but it wasn’t for lack of effort.

Seriously…it’s about time someone said. I mean, if ET was any good he would have played as a true freshman…yeesh!
Yeah, Jerry Jones wouldn’t take him anyway.

I like the Winfield comparison. He’s got a little Bob Sanders in there too without the insane neck muscles.
A more pressing question is which Internets this was heard from now that you’ve cancelled your Rivals sub (not that anyone noticed…)

doubt it means anything, but he wasn’t on cnnsi.com’s early entree list.

Word from the Statesman is that he received a second round grade, so yes, if the Cowboys want him, he’ll be there.
by Trips Right on Jan 14, 2010 12:25 PM CST reply actions
Why would he leave for a second round grade? Would he not be next year’s Eric Berry and be the number 1 safety?
Does this have something to do with the upcoming NFL contract negotiations/self destruction?

Maybe, but more likely that his entire family (from what I’ve read) was decimated by Rita and has been living in a motel since…time to earn a living.

Kiper updated his Big Board and he’s got ET at #11 overall. Scouts Inc has ET at 12. He won’t make it past the Texans around #20 for sure. Hell, I am not even considering the possibility of the Texans being able to take him.

Those rankings are pre-40 time. He’s one of the fastest safeties I’ve seen in a long time, which will ease his transition to cb if necessary as stated above.
Jerry Jones will fall in love with Taylor Mays and take him, totally forgetting about the Roy Williams debacle. I will laugh.
dick, you keep that insider stuff coming. Seems like the Texans have to go DB first, but who knows?
by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 14, 2010 2:26 PM CST reply actions
i have no idea what is insider and what is not on ESPN. I’ve been logged in as an insider for 7 years.

Anything having to do with mocks is insider. Also, any worthwhile recruiting news. Keep presenting us with that information. Thanks.

Sounds like he’s doing right by his family, which is just fine with me. Color me sentimental, but I hope he comes back to get his degree someday.

Deep year at DT, and not just at the top. I agree, we go best player at DB or DT. Tired of throwing first round money at the DL, but if it’s not improving, we have to keep trying.
CTJ, is hoping we can get his hero Matt Schaub some more weapons so all that VY talk is squelched once and for all.
Hookem Texans.

Was I the only one that noticed Earl flying across the field to stop Ingram on those sweeps where Gideon continually bit down inside instead of staying out and forcing the play back inside?
Earl is smart. He’s a ball hawk. He’s fast as hell. He’s got everything you’d want in a DB except for being a tad undersized. Though I don’t really see how that’s a problem considering guys like Bob Sanders dominate in the NFL and aren’t all that big. If you can bring the wood that’s all that matters.
by SpiralOut on Jan 14, 2010 9:51 PM CST reply actions
Bob can’t stay healthy and I fear the same thing unless Thomas moves to corner. Bob is also a shade under 210, while Earl is probably only 195 or so.
I think Earl starts at corner, then as he adds weight maybe he shifts to FS. Hell, Ronnie Lott made more Pro Bowls at corner than he did at safety. The move isn’t unprecedented. Rod Woodson made a similar transition, albeit later in his career.
The scoutniks McShay and Kiper will say, “Bottom line, Earl Thomas is a football player.” Yeah, no shit.
I’m happy with either the 49ers or Texans taking him. 3 first round picks between the two.

Also, Earl was totally flattened by Fozzy Whittaker in the OU game.
