Sooners May Need New Defensive End Coach

So OU's Chris Wilson says he has been offered the Co-Defensive Coordinator position at Mississippi State, and and he anticipates accepting the post.

That means Bob Stoops will need a new defensive ends coach. Gee, I wonder where he will look. Say, here's an idea.

Mack hasn’t lost one recruiting battle yet this year versus Stoops. I doubt it happens here either.

by beowulf on Jan 15, 2010 4:13 PM CST reply actions

If daddy goes to OU, we have no chance of winning that recruiting battle.

by UTomlinson on Jan 15, 2010 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Pretty good speculation. I think this is likely, unless Jeffcoat Sr declines a job offer for wounded pride of being second choice. Yeah, that’s what I’ll hope for.

It’s not a given that Jeffcoat will want to be coached by his father. I sure as hell wouldn’t. Could create issues with the rest of the d-linemen, and what could he learn from his Dad that he hasn’t already?

by fitzhume on Jan 15, 2010 4:36 PM CST reply actions

Say Jeffcoat Sr. knows that his son wants to go to Texas. Would he still take the job, or is it a 51/49 thing and Jr. would tell his father he’ll follow him to OU?

Beowulf……Aaron Franklin.

UTomlinson, I’m with you. No way they willfully take seperate sides at the same point in time.

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 15, 2010 4:38 PM CST reply actions

Fitz, no way Jeffcoat is going to watch OU game plan to cut block and hold his own son.

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 15, 2010 4:40 PM CST reply actions

When I was an 18 year old college freshman, I wanted to keep my dad as close as possible. Of course the younger Jeffcoat probably has very little autonomy in this decision. It’s a near certainty if one goes to OU that both go to OU (and all 3 including the sister).

by jtabor on Jan 15, 2010 5:24 PM CST reply actions

You suffer from seperation anxiety, imo.

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 15, 2010 6:15 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think it is a given he will accept the job. He interviewed for the defensive end position in 2005 after he was fired from Dallas. Now he has a comparable position. Actually, he currently has more responsibility as the defensive line coach at Houston than he would as defensive ends coach at OU. I’m sure they would offer him more money, but I doubt that is the only variable. He might also be leery that OU might be trying to influence Jackson’s recruiting.

Also, would Stoops poach an assistant coach from one of his ex-assistants; that seems pretty slimy and I’m sure Stoops would not do it. right?

by joeschmoe on Jan 15, 2010 7:53 PM CST reply actions

I’m just going to go ahead and say we’re fucked on this deal.

by sizzlechest on Jan 15, 2010 9:54 PM CST reply actions

I previously thought we had about a 90% chance to land Jeffcoat. Let’s go ahead and change that to 10%.

by nordberg on Jan 15, 2010 11:14 PM CST reply actions

Really? You had to get 8 paragraphs down in that article before they mention Jackson? Lame.

by Morgan on Jan 16, 2010 9:54 AM CST reply actions

If not for the superior defensive end play, I would have rushed for 462 yards.

BTW, if Mama Jeffcoat smells a rat, Jim will not be going anywhere.

I’m with nordberg on this. Can’t see anyway this works out in our favor.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 16, 2010 11:48 AM CST reply actions

Pretty telling that the pic with the article is of the recruit, not the coach they are supposedly interested in…

I’m in the other camp. Based on the Jeffcoat recruitment so far, I think the Jeffcoats would do anything to avoid the appearance of impropriety (do we even have any non-lawyers that read this blog?). It is hard to see son in burnt orange and dad in crimson, but its even harder to see them going as a package. Maybe I’m just clinging to the hope that the Jeffcoats have watched Stoops’ bullshit this year and ruled OU out, but those are my thoughts.

Re: “Based on the Jeffcoat recruitment so far, I think the Jeffcoats would do anything to avoid the appearance of impropriety (do we even have any non-lawyers that read this blog?).”

Not a lawyer, and I thought about this as well. The mere appearance of impropriety can’t be avoided. It’d be a taint that would linger and be talked about.

But right or wrong, you’d have a tough time convincing me it’s an ideal arrangement to have a newly hired dad lighting a fire under his own son to for him grow and mature independently. We’re talking about the years when young people get to have some separation and learn to deal with life on their own terms. Having a parent right there as an intimate part of your day to day college experience can create an odd and undesirable kind of conflict. I’m not saying it would be completely destined to backfire, but knowing what I know, I wouldn’t choose it for a variety of reasons.

“do we even have any non-lawyers that read this blog?”

Well, you have one furloughed railroader, although I have aspirations of catching on with Clipper Cooper’s TransPacific Ocean Railroad. But his engineering department will need to get off their lazy asses and see his brilliant vision to fruition. (C.C. = the funniest shit I ever read. Evarrr).
If I’m the only non-lawyer on this blog, does that mean mine is the only soul not facing eternal damnation in Hades? Nah, I think I sealed my fate during the a&m game.
Anyway, always remember: Gratitude is the guilt of the unworthy…

triplehorn, I completely agree. From a purely speculative standpoint, based on what little the family has said, Jeffcoat Sr. coming to OU seems to be a worst case scenario for UT on recruiting Jeffcoat Jr. I’m with texastough in one regard. I don’t think they’ll come as a package deal because I don’t think Jeffcoat the younger will want to go where his entire family is (sister already committed to OU women’s b-ball team), and I don’t think he’ll play for UT when his dad is coaching for OU. Basically, Jeffcoat would probably head to USC or some such.

by NateHeupel on Jan 16, 2010 6:46 PM CST reply actions

Nathaniel, what would Chinless Bob think of Sr. if he couldn’t land Jr.?

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 16, 2010 7:09 PM CST reply actions

I would think that USC is completely out at this point with no Norton.

It’s a UT (75%) – OU (25%) battle right now. I just don’t know how the hiring of his daddy would change those percentages.

Magnus,

Probably the same thing that Chlamydia Brown thinks of one Greg Davis: You’re not doing what you were brought here to do, but I don’t have legal cause to fire you yet.

Much better to let the kid pick the school he wants. Much better.

…as it was foretold, it comes to pass…

From Tom Dienhart’s 1:33pm twitter feed:

“Houston defensive line coach Jim Jeffcoat will interview for the defensive end job at Oklahoma, I have been told.”

by txhorn on Jan 18, 2010 3:24 PM CST reply actions

Jim Jeffcoat is staying at UH according to Mark Berman and KRIV in Houston.

by il_Cativo on Jan 18, 2010 3:39 PM CST reply actions

Please let that be true.

Yep, says Jim is staying and that Jackson has eliminated USC. OU, UH, Texas and Arizona St are the 4 finalists.

by dick on Jan 18, 2010 4:22 PM CST reply actions

See you soon JJ. He plays Sam Acho. Reggie Wilson can be Kindle.

The more things change, they stay the same.
