Jim Jeffcoat Not Going to Oklahoma

Or so he told NewsOK beat writer David Ubben.

This is obviously huge news if true considering the nation's top ranked defensive end prospect, Jim's son Jackson Jeffcoat, has narrowed his college choices down to Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona State and UH. At this point in the recruiting game, it would be a huge upset if Jackson landed anywhere but Texas. JJ would give the Longhorns one of the top one or two defensive line classes in the nation and if the Horns land the nation's number 1 linebacker prospect Jordan Hicks, Texas would have most likely inked the best defensive class the Longhorns have ever signed since scholarship limits were imposed.

Big news.

I was under the impression that Tolley was set to retire here in the near future. Perhaps he’s holding out for a move to Austin?

So we have a chance?

by beowulf on Jan 19, 2010 8:13 AM CST reply actions

I thought it was more likely that Jackson would not commit to OU if his father were coaching there…I’m believing in his Texas commit though.

OTOH, if speculation that Jim would not announce his decision until after Jackson’s decision had been made (to make Jackson’s decision independent of his father’s), then we know that Jackson has finally made up his mind.

That’s all well and good but I’m gonna wait for for ace reporter Thayer Evans to weigh in with the “real” story. Accurate or not, they’re always more salacious.

by TxTower on Jan 19, 2010 9:19 AM CST reply actions

The Jim Jeffcoat to OU story was a non-starter from the beginning. Have you seen UH (his current employer) play defense? No way OU would even consider a guy coaching one of the worst defenses in the country.

by Tex on Jan 19, 2010 10:03 AM CST reply actions

OU would hire Jim Jeffcoat in a heartbeat. That was really stupid.

by beowulf on Jan 19, 2010 11:38 AM CST reply actions

To clarify, Jeffcoat did not tell David Ubben anything. Ubben links to an article at Fox 26 Houston.

by White Rob on Jan 19, 2010 12:08 PM CST reply actions

@ Beowulf- That must be why OU couldn’t say no when he interview in 2005, right? Wrong. Your heartbeat analysis is overblown.

by Tex on Jan 19, 2010 2:35 PM CST reply actions

“"He is going to be there four or five years. He has to be happy. I want him to make a decision that best suits him, not me, his mother or anyone else," Jim Jeffcoat told Fox 26”

Great quote.

@tex.

Your view of the situation, as well as your thought process, remains severly flawed. You really should stop posting on this subject.

by beowulf on Jan 19, 2010 3:23 PM CST reply actions

It’s a defensible position, whether you like it or not. Your circular logic doesn’t give me much to work with so I probably will stop posting on the subject.

by Tex on Jan 19, 2010 3:51 PM CST reply actions

Seriously, though, Tex, a man in charge of a single area on D can only effect so much, especially when undoubtedly he has a somewhat short hand to play in the first place.

Jeffcoat’s very well considered by his peers, so basing it on a single season and that he was runner-up for the job under Stoops before is too flimsy to be that critical. Gotta have more substance than that.

Again, the man’s well thought of in coaching circles from all I’ve heard, so it’s only a matter of time before he moves on up.

by SlickStreet on Jan 19, 2010 4:58 PM CST reply actions

The more I think about this, the more I believe that Jackson Jeffcoat really does want to go to UT and Jim Jeffcoat really is interested in the OU job. But Jim Jeffcoat knows damn well if he’s at OU and Jackson’s sis is at OU, then Jackson won’t make an objective decision. Think about it. The Jeffcoat family is very close, and Jackson has stated that Jacqueline (his twin sister) is his best friend. When your whole family is moving to one school, and you’re all that close, how do you make an objective decision?

Admittedly, this is pure speculation. I’ll be up front about that. But Jeffcoat has to realize that OU has a great track record of putting position coaches into coordinator jobs and coordinators into head coaching jobs. Our last d-ends coach is a D1 defensive coordinator now. He’s also got to realize that if he takes the OU job before his son makes his decision, that there’s no way Jackson will be able to look at this decision objectively with his own interests at heart.

by NateHeupel on Jan 19, 2010 5:01 PM CST reply actions

There is some smoke that Jeffcoat will be interviewed for a position on Chan Gailey’s new staff in Buffalo. That may have played a role.

by The General on Jan 19, 2010 5:21 PM CST reply actions

Tex, Sr. would have only coached the DE’s at OU. His son’s number one strength is his technique. Not his measurables, meaning Dad knows what he’s doing.

Nate, take that further, but from Jackson’s perspective. If you love your dad, how do you make an objective decision? If I was on the fence, I would do what’s in his best interest as well as mine. I believe he likes UT too, but if it was a clear cut favorite, don’t you think he would have committed by now? As business like as they are, I can’t figure out why this is still going on. My friend thinks he’s going to keep UH in it as long as possible in order to keep buzz going around his father’s employer. ASU has no chance. I think we’re the favorite, but OU is right there.

OU has 29 verbal commits for 2010. ..and they still have room for Jeffcoat? I guess they must have room since they are still in the running. How did they get so many slots? Has there been that much attrition within their program? Just wonderin…

by marlon brandon on Jan 20, 2010 1:17 PM CST reply actions

Good point, Marlon. Normally, the only you’ll see a team taking nearly as many commits as OU is this year is when a new coaching staff has taken over, and they have run off the previous regime’s players that don’t fit the new scheme or simply aren’t talented enough. A 29 man class for a team that hasn’t changed head coaches is ridiculous.

by bigdukesix on Jan 20, 2010 4:11 PM CST reply actions

They have four underclassmen leaving, I think, and probably a bunch of early enrollees. Could be a grayshirt or two, I suppose.

by TaylorTRoom on Jan 20, 2010 4:25 PM CST reply actions

Of those 29, five are already on campus and didn’t count against this year’s numbers (Stills, Jefferson, McClain, Irwin, Woods)

That said, Taylor, we just took a commit from DE Geneo Grissom. With Chuka Ndulue already on board, I think we’ve given up on Jeffcoat.

by NateHeupel on Jan 20, 2010 4:59 PM CST reply actions

Entire UT staff is apparently doing an in-home tonight with Jeffcoat. Maybe, just maybe this thing ends tonight.

Nate, the five on campus help OU get around the 25 per class limit. It’s the 85 man overall scholarship limit that I question with a massive class of this size though. It’s definitely an above average level of attrition to be able fit in 29 new players.

In other news, some people think Tony Jefferson is going to land at UCLA.

What say you?

by whoopspat on Jan 20, 2010 6:58 PM CST reply actions

Hey Nate, Didnt you hear what Tex said? Jeffcoat sucks and would never be considered by OU.

by ecurbmanchild on Jan 21, 2010 10:51 AM CST reply actions

I think that Jefferson is already enrolled at OU. If that is true he can’t switch to UCLA.
