Texas vs UConn open thread

If we can slow down Ray Allen, we have a chance.

Our Northeast correspondent Vasherized is at the game. He was up there watching field hockey or some other preppy shit and somehow managed to get a ticket. Vasherized talked a bit with Todd Wright who told him that we had a great week of practice, particularly on offense.

The UConn students work on their cheers an hour and a half before gametime.

I’m definitely less nervous about this game than the K State game. However, I really don’t want to have a losing streak going. Hopefully we can get a complete game on both ends today.

by Diego on Jan 23, 2010 3:05 PM CST reply actions

Vasherized told me we looked nice as rice and mello as jello in pregame warmup.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:08 PM CST reply actions

bullshit call on Pttman. The beat goes on.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:11 PM CST reply actions

man that call on Pittman sucked. That is either a charge or a walk.

by chitwood on Jan 23, 2010 3:12 PM CST reply actions

UConn looking shaky taking care of the ball early.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:12 PM CST reply actions

Home whistles rear their ugly head early.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:14 PM CST reply actions

Frentetic pace. Much better energy says the hippie.

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 3:14 PM CST reply actions

Slow getting back so far.

by Diego on Jan 23, 2010 3:15 PM CST reply actions

Nice drive Jai. Still wondering why Alexi is ahead of Jonson in rotation. Now Hill? We aren’t as deep in quality as people think.

by Savage Henry on Jan 23, 2010 3:16 PM CST reply actions

We just CAN NOT afford to give them the half court alley-oop all night..

by Skip Foreplay on Jan 23, 2010 3:16 PM CST reply actions

DUNK THE FUCKING BALL!!

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 3:16 PM CST reply actions

Why the fuck is Matt Hill playing?

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:17 PM CST reply actions

Dunk it!

by Savage Henry on Jan 23, 2010 3:17 PM CST reply actions

Denise>hey

by Dunstan Pearl on Jan 23, 2010 3:18 PM CST reply actions

If we’re going to be elite, we need to quit recruiting guys who can not dunk that shot. What a great play by Bradley.

by Sailor Ripley on Jan 23, 2010 3:18 PM CST reply actions

Matt Hill is not good…at any phase of the game. The fact that he plays ahead of Clint Chapman is criminal, especially given how well Chapman played at KSU. C’mon, Rick.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:18 PM CST reply actions

No foul on the Bradley drive, what the fuck?

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:21 PM CST reply actions

James looking strong.

by Savage Henry on Jan 23, 2010 3:22 PM CST reply actions

I can’t believe at one point my dumb ass was almost indifferent as to whether James came back.

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 3:22 PM CST reply actions

Is that 6 fouls to 1 now?

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 3:23 PM CST reply actions

Matt Hill has no business on the floor.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:23 PM CST reply actions

Where is Gary?

by Savage Henry on Jan 23, 2010 3:23 PM CST reply actions

sigh matt hill.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:24 PM CST reply actions

get a body on someone Jordan

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:24 PM CST reply actions

I’m not one for ragging our guys but he’s out of his league.

by Sailor Ripley on Jan 23, 2010 3:24 PM CST reply actions

Great. Another on Pittman

by Dunstan Pearl on Jan 23, 2010 3:24 PM CST reply actions

Skip,

I fear your name implies that you’re shorting yourself one of the greatest pleasures that life has to offer: the standing 69. I highly recommend you try it, provided you can find a woman strong enough to hold you up.

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 3:25 PM CST reply actions

Refs letting UCONN back in the game.

by sizzlechest on Jan 23, 2010 3:25 PM CST reply actions

Everything’s a foul on Pittman. I’ve never seen anything like it and Rick better address it at some point.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:25 PM CST reply actions

uh… we only have one rebound.

by hookem625 on Jan 23, 2010 3:26 PM CST reply actions

Jordan is so mentally lazy right now. That was just no concentration.

by Sailor Ripley on Jan 23, 2010 3:26 PM CST reply actions

How is Alexi ever going to rebound if he catches worse than my 2 year old?

by Savage Henry on Jan 23, 2010 3:27 PM CST reply actions

We have the worst hands in the entire sport. Everyone looks like Featherstone trying to hold on to the damn ball.

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 3:27 PM CST reply actions

if wangmene could just develop better hands, he’d be a dangerous rebounder. as it is, he gets his hands on the ball pretty often, but he can’t control it. good to see him hit the offensive glass, regardless.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:28 PM CST reply actions

damion looks refocused, though. playing much better than at KSU. thought i’d put something positive in the midst of the negatives.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:29 PM CST reply actions

Before Avery shoots, at least we haven’t missed a FT!

by Diego on Jan 23, 2010 3:33 PM CST reply actions

And after.

by Diego on Jan 23, 2010 3:33 PM CST reply actions

Magnus – I’ll take that under consideration, however, I shudder to think what a woman capable of such a feat would look like.

by Skip Foreplay on Jan 23, 2010 3:34 PM CST reply actions

Bradley’s having a good game thus far as well…

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 3:34 PM CST reply actions

need to tighten up the defensive boards.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:35 PM CST reply actions

dogus is dominating kemba walker. it is a good matchup for balbay.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:36 PM CST reply actions

Matt Hill coming back in…do you take points + rebounds or and 1s given up?

by Diego on Jan 23, 2010 3:36 PM CST reply actions

Hamilton on Robinson doing a great job. This is huge.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:36 PM CST reply actions

UConn is really going over the back a ton on the offensive glass, good think they can’t hold onto the ball.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 3:36 PM CST reply actions

We will pull away if they keep turning it over.

by Savage Henry on Jan 23, 2010 3:36 PM CST reply actions

Our weakside rebounding hasn’t been anything to brag about the past three games.

by VirginiaLonghorn on Jan 23, 2010 3:39 PM CST reply actions

arghh. finish those drives, jordan! he can take robinson to the hole, but finish. and, just as i type this, he drains a 3.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:40 PM CST reply actions

Hamilton isn’t shy is he

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:40 PM CST reply actions

I think I could beat doge at horse.

by Savage Henry on Jan 23, 2010 3:42 PM CST reply actions

Lucas, cold off the bench, shoots up a three without a pass. Damion now is done for the half with two fouls. Where does the offense come from?

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 3:43 PM CST reply actions

Interesting that James gets called for over the back the way this game has gone.

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 3:43 PM CST reply actions

i like that about hamilton. some may complain that he’s a black hole or that he doesn’t have good decision-making (which may be justified), but in games like this especially, you need a guy or two who aren’t afraid of the ball.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:43 PM CST reply actions

Is Matt Hill on scholarship?

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:44 PM CST reply actions

what is jai lucas doing dishing to matt hill down low? that’s not good awareness of who you’re passing to, jai.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:44 PM CST reply actions

If we MUST have a big man in the middle when Dex sits, why isn’t it Chapman rather than Hill?

by VirginiaLonghorn on Jan 23, 2010 3:44 PM CST reply actions

gavin edwards should have 3 or 4 fouls already.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:45 PM CST reply actions

mpayne, then why is Hill posting up?

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:45 PM CST reply actions

unbelievable no call on the mason drive.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:46 PM CST reply actions

Matt Hill is just not good. We are determined to make this a close game. With the amount of TO’s they have, we should be up double digits….

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 3:46 PM CST reply actions

Get Hill out of there. Jesus Christ

by Dunstan Pearl on Jan 23, 2010 3:46 PM CST reply actions

trips,
for the life of me, i can’t understand why rick plays matt hill over chapman. the dude has no athletic ability to finish down low, especially in a game like this w/ uconn’s length. hill has no business being the game, you’re right. he just blew two more gimme layups downlow. painful, just painful.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:47 PM CST reply actions

Our inability to finish at the rim is stupefying. Always seems to be the case under Barnes.

by Skip Foreplay on Jan 23, 2010 3:47 PM CST reply actions

mpayne, yep, and you’re right, Edwards should be on the bench by now

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:48 PM CST reply actions

JCB is having a tough game thus far.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 3:49 PM CST reply actions

Brown just cost us a bucket and a turnover

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:49 PM CST reply actions

i don’t like the lineup in the game right now. brown, mason, lucas, johnson, and…matt hill. not good.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:50 PM CST reply actions

UConn is a comedy of errors passing the ball. John Wooden is rolling over in his grave….Wait!

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 3:52 PM CST reply actions

i don’t get it. our guards seem to lack some IQ when it comes to the drive and dish. case in point, if matt hill is in the game, he is not an option! c’mon, bradley. oh, and hill misses yet another layup.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:52 PM CST reply actions

Matt Hill needs to go up trying to miss a layup, it might hellp.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:52 PM CST reply actions

Reverse logic. I like it, Trips.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 3:53 PM CST reply actions

We’re playing really well though, but for some missed layups.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:53 PM CST reply actions

Really bad mental mistake by Chapman.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 3:55 PM CST reply actions

Matt Hill < Greg Smith

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 3:56 PM CST reply actions

attaboy mason

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:56 PM CST reply actions

i agree. seems like we’re much more focused in the 1st half than the previous 2 games. on the road against a tough opponent, up by 8 with 15 seconds in 1st half is very good.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:56 PM CST reply actions

Pace is perfect for us. Uconn can’t beat us in a game played in the 80’s.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 3:57 PM CST reply actions

it’s halftime, so i’m daydreaming about tristan thompson on a team like this. athletic bigs is the one thing our team’s missing.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 3:59 PM CST reply actions

Feel fortunate to be up 8. We’re playing with much more intensity then Monday and that’s good. Avery Bradley and DJ are playing well. Pittman has 2 points and we’re still getting out rebounded. Hopefully we can put them away in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half. Hopefully Rick can figure out that Chapman is playing much better then Hill and be first white guy off the bench….

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 3:59 PM CST reply actions

patrick bateman, i’d prefer if chapman was the only white guy off the bench.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:01 PM CST reply actions

mpayne, I hear ya. I’m still hoping for garbage time when we’re up 25. Then unleash the scrubs, Hill included…

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:03 PM CST reply actions

by the way, i watched the ohio state vs. west virginia game before ours. seeing osu’s slew of 6’6"-6’7" wings (turner, lighty, buford) makes we hope all the more that hamilton stays in school. i can easily envision him like one of those guys next year. we might need to content ourselves with flashes of brilliance (with a lot of groan-inducing play in between) from hamilton this year, but i am a big believer in the guy.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:05 PM CST reply actions

I think Turner will be the best pro coming out, ahead of John Wall. Wall will almost certainly get picked ahead of him, but the NBA draft is full of inaccuracy and misfires. Hamilton has held his hands down while on offense today, so he appears to be trying to fit into this whole “team” thing.

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 4:08 PM CST reply actions

Hamilton isn’t going anywhere. He’s at least two year player.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:08 PM CST reply actions

Texas +2/-105 2H. Like it.

by chitwood on Jan 23, 2010 4:09 PM CST reply actions

I want to see Patrick Bateman and Rick Schroeder fight to the death gladiator style.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:09 PM CST reply actions

there have been plenty of players as unprepared for the nba as hamilton who’ve left school. but you’re right, i think he needs AT LEAST another year. i was impressed with evan turner’s game. when i read that he played PG, i was skeptical. i thought he was just a guy playing the point (a la justin mason last year). but he’s a legit PG, at least in college.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:13 PM CST reply actions

Me vs. Ricky Stratton? Que?

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:13 PM CST reply actions

I play Pittman until he fouls out.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:13 PM CST reply actions

nice bounce pass balbay to bradley!

Score!

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:13 PM CST reply actions

Oh shit, I meant Jason Bateman. My bad, bro.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:14 PM CST reply actions

I thought that was where you were going, Trips. Patrick Bateman v. Ricky Stratton seems a little one-sided, you sick fuck.

by chitwood on Jan 23, 2010 4:15 PM CST reply actions

No worries. Derek Taylor was always Ricky Stratton’s mortal enemy…FTR, I could take him.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:16 PM CST reply actions

uconn with another offensive rebound, this time with pittman in the game.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:17 PM CST reply actions

That’s a foul? Como?

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:17 PM CST reply actions

Three quick fouls on Dogus…..Terrible play by DJ…

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:18 PM CST reply actions

3 quicks on balbay? damn is that 4?

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:18 PM CST reply actions

Great start.

Sheesh. Bye Dogus.

by Sailor Ripley on Jan 23, 2010 4:19 PM CST reply actions

dogus getting those fouls will hurt us for this next stretch.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:19 PM CST reply actions

Awful 1 minute of basketball.

by sizzlechest on Jan 23, 2010 4:19 PM CST reply actions

I guess we’ll find out in the next 15 minutes whether anyone can run this team.

by VirginiaLonghorn on Jan 23, 2010 4:20 PM CST reply actions

that’s why we saved Dex for the 2nd half… Sexy Dexy, not the new Dex.

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:20 PM CST reply actions

Is that Vasherized wearing a pink UConn shirt?

by dick on Jan 23, 2010 4:20 PM CST reply actions

Fucking Lucas

by Savage Henry on Jan 23, 2010 4:20 PM CST reply actions

kemba walker is so out of control.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:22 PM CST reply actions

Looks like they gave one of those fouls that appeared to be on Dogus to Damion. Now they both have 3 fouls.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:22 PM CST reply actions

nice job by Jai.

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:22 PM CST reply actions

Pass the fucking ball hamilton1

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:24 PM CST reply actions

that’s what we need to do… turn and shoot. can’ wait to see what this foul is.

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:25 PM CST reply actions

1 on 3 is money time for Hamilton.

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 4:25 PM CST reply actions

this is the stretch where we need to establish pittman. if we don’t get production from him here, i doubt he’ll be much of a factor in this game.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:25 PM CST reply actions

Mason in at point. Curious to see how this works out.

by Bartoncreek on Jan 23, 2010 4:26 PM CST reply actions

Vash’d could be updating from his phone, but no, he is just enjoying the game. Not right I tell you.

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:26 PM CST reply actions

If sizzlechest was the “color” guy, how would he describe Ater Majok?

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:28 PM CST reply actions

groan hamilton…
okay, we need to go down low to pittman.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:28 PM CST reply actions

Jordan with a couple of nice plays. He’s very talented and very young….

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:29 PM CST reply actions

nice pass by Johnson and nice play there.

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:29 PM CST reply actions

Nice sequence by Hamilton. Looks good bringing the ball up the court.

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 4:29 PM CST reply actions

Dyson is the only guy on their club you cannot leave.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:30 PM CST reply actions

We’re going small with Damion, JH and Gary. This could be a problem.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:31 PM CST reply actions

yes, he does. maybe he’s growing up.

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:31 PM CST reply actions

we have a very small lineup in right now. mismatches all over the place.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:31 PM CST reply actions

Patrick, has Dex been a factor anyway?

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:32 PM CST reply actions

Really good foul by Johnson on Majok

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:32 PM CST reply actions

need to go to pittman NOW.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:33 PM CST reply actions

We fuck up finishing within 3 feet of the basket better than anyone.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 23, 2010 4:33 PM CST reply actions

A team this talented should be more fun to watch.

by RichUT on Jan 23, 2010 4:33 PM CST reply actions

This team has a problem with 3 minute implosions and missing lay ups.

by Savage Henry on Jan 23, 2010 4:33 PM CST reply actions

We can’t make a goddamn layup.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:33 PM CST reply actions

Can we miss any more 5 footers? FUCK

by Bartoncreek on Jan 23, 2010 4:34 PM CST reply actions

Pittman whistled for another bogus foul.

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:34 PM CST reply actions

Size is always a factor and he’s been laying decently in the 2nd half. There’s a lot to criticize about Pittman’s play the last 3 weeks but regardless he’s back in and just fouled. Brilliant. Uconn is just a very big team.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:34 PM CST reply actions

If you were shot out of John Lucas, aren’t you supposed to be able to shoot?

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 4:34 PM CST reply actions

Fouls are getting ridiculous again this half. This sucks as we have completely outplayed them imo.

by Diego on Jan 23, 2010 4:34 PM CST reply actions

6 fouls to 1. Just like the first half.

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 4:34 PM CST reply actions

How has Rick not called a time out?

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 23, 2010 4:34 PM CST reply actions

oh my. settle down, boys.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:34 PM CST reply actions

Time for TO Barnes!

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:35 PM CST reply actions

got to get this lineup out.

by java on Jan 23, 2010 4:35 PM CST reply actions

That was the worst coaching stretch I’ve ever seen out of Barnes.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 23, 2010 4:35 PM CST reply actions

Kept doge out too long.

by Savage Henry on Jan 23, 2010 4:35 PM CST reply actions

I guess my question has been answered … no one but Balbay can run the team.

by VirginiaLonghorn on Jan 23, 2010 4:36 PM CST reply actions

No Balbay at point and the turnovers begin. Mason looked decent the couple of mins. he was at point

by Bartoncreek on Jan 23, 2010 4:36 PM CST reply actions

The most frustrating collection of talent to watch ever. I had much more fun watching BJ Tyler and Terrence Wrencher.

Does Barnes coach offense, or just accumulate talent?

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 4:36 PM CST reply actions

15-0 runs are beautiful. We couldn’t expect UConn to continue to throw it outbounds for no reason.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:36 PM CST reply actions

For a team that subs as liberally as we do, it’s amazing how long we sit our kids that are in ostensible foul trouble.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:36 PM CST reply actions

Wait, magnus did you just imply that John Lucas was a woman? Because that makes some sense.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 23, 2010 4:36 PM CST reply actions

Right now I hate pretty much the whole lot of them, including these refs.

We’re dumber than a sack of axe handles.

by Sailor Ripley on Jan 23, 2010 4:37 PM CST reply actions

what the fuck is going on?
im only watching via ESPN gamecast

by scagnetti on Jan 23, 2010 4:37 PM CST reply actions

Balbay picked up 3 fouls in about a minute. I don’t think the refs want him (or Pittman) to play their game today.

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 4:37 PM CST reply actions

Barton, as bad as it is. I actually prefer Mason at the point in certain situations. He can’t shoot, but neither can Dogus but he can penetrate and he’s less prone to horrible decisions like JCB and less much of a mismatch then Jai.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:38 PM CST reply actions

I’m not sure how you let the team “play through” a 12 point swing, which included at least five missed three-footers or less, without calling a time out.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 23, 2010 4:38 PM CST reply actions

need some leadership from damion right now. on the road, uconn with the lead after a run. need your senior leader to do something to stem the tide…rebound, steal, block….something.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:39 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, the refs are fucking us. Sure. But that run is on Rick. I know his philosophy on his shit but that was atrocious. We’ve got a bunch of pups running around stepping on their ears.

by Sailor Ripley on Jan 23, 2010 4:39 PM CST reply actions

Barnes needs to find a lineup and stick with it for more than 2 minutes.

by Spinscan on Jan 23, 2010 4:40 PM CST reply actions

Weir, we’re starting 3 guards and two wings. We better be pressing.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 4:40 PM CST reply actions

Dogus going to the stripe is not a good way to stop the bleeding. Damion gets a bucket.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:41 PM CST reply actions

holy cow, that was an ugly FT from dogus. gary was fouled on the follow, but of course no call.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:41 PM CST reply actions

damion w/ big follow up offensive rebound. that’s what i’m talking about.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 4:41 PM CST reply actions

seems like he was waiting for the under 12

by scagnetti on Jan 23, 2010 4:42 PM CST reply actions

Balbay is a 1980’s NL shortstop. I’m thinking Jose Uribe or some shit.

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 4:42 PM CST reply actions

Bradley is having a very good game. Nice to see him bounce back….

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 4:42 PM CST reply actions

CBS kind of ruins big plays showing them 5 times in a row immediately after we see it live.

Ghost, apparently you never got “the talk.” John Lucas shot Jai Lucas into Jai Lucas’ mother. John Lucas was a wonderful shooter. It was a play on words. Not a good one, but one nonetheless.

It’s disgraceful that Hamilton hasn’t played in 10 mins. while this team melts down. You need points not defense. Between that and Lexi and Hil playing over Champman, and playing 3 guys under 6-2 against UCONN, it is clear that Barnes has lost his fucking mind.

dexter with another total non-factor performance before fouling out.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 5:08 PM CST reply actions

When Ward went down, I thought we’d be okay as I had read all the hype around JCB and that he was the best player in the scrimmages. Obviously, thus far, that has proved to be a premature and with Jai Lucas being a better guard to play off the ball and in certain matchups (zone), we really struggle to play our high pick n’ roll game without Dogus in the game. I keep hoping the light goes on for JCB and JH and they can become more consistent, even for freshman, but that hasn’t happened. Dexter has been incognito for a month and Bradley had a bad two week stretch. This team has been nothing but DJ and GJ offensively for a month.

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 5:08 PM CST reply actions

Rick should let Springmann or Terry coach the next and bench himself.

Pittman is down $10 million in January so far.

I don’t mean right now. I mean being a demonstrative floor leader. Yelling at people. I thnk J’Covan will be that dude eventually.

James is a really good player. But he’s not that dude.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 23, 2010 5:08 PM CST reply actions

Chitwood,

I don’t think we will get knocked out in the round of 32, but it sure wouldn’t surprise me. This team turtles up when we face any sort adversity. Most of that blame falls on Barnes who still hasn’t figured out what type of team he wants us to be.

Side note – This regression by Pittman in the last few games rivals Atchley’s regression from his junior to senior season. I guess they couldn’t handle the expectations.

by UTHornFan014 on Jan 23, 2010 5:09 PM CST reply actions

Let me get this straight, you don’t play Pittman when you’re up a few possessions, but you play him when you’re down double digits. That makes no fucking sense at all.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 5:09 PM CST reply actions

We may be playing bad but I see it more as a foul trouble/rebounding problem more so than anything else and I think its mental. We just need to get our head back and we’ll be back…hopefully by tournament time. Also, if the freshmen and mason would stop freaking out every time we are down I think it would help.

by LoneOptimist on Jan 23, 2010 5:09 PM CST reply actions

I think we should play Chapman, Hill, Varez on crutches, and two walk ons.

by Sailor Ripley on Jan 23, 2010 5:10 PM CST reply actions

jon, we’ve looked horrible for about 6 or 7 games now, and Barnes has done nothing to change the situation. He can’t decide what to do with his lineups except put Mason out there for as long as possible.

Our team is soft and fundamentally unsound.

It’s not that Texas is losing, it’s how they’re losing. The erstwhile #1 team in the country loses to KSU by blowing layups and free throws and is in the process of getting blown out by a middle of the pack Big East team. And we’ve barely entered the Big 12 schedule.

Now, if this is Texas of 5 years ago, this is understandable and somewhat acceptable. But not this team, with this hype and this obvious a collection of talent.

by CrazyJoeDavola66 on Jan 23, 2010 5:11 PM CST reply actions

We need Perryman.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 23, 2010 5:11 PM CST reply actions

Uconn is just as fast and athletic as we are.

by Vasherized on Jan 23, 2010 5:12 PM CST reply actions

I really thought Matt Hill played a terrific game. Maybe we could have him start over James or Pittman?

The way it looks now, Barnes has no ability (or is just a stubborn motherfucker proving a point) in sitting a few members of this team. He made comments earlier this week about Mason being the straw that stirs the drink, and it’s pretty damn obvious he is stirring a Tab cola.

Oh fuck it, maybe we’ll get an easy draw and make it to the Elite 8.

When the season started, I saw a lock for a Final Four. Now, we’d be extremely lucky to get there. This loss is harder than any of the losses last season. Too much talent to shit the bed like this.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 23, 2010 5:14 PM CST reply actions

Yes Trips, almost every game ever played in the history of the sport you sit the important guy with fouls while you try and hold the lead. If you are down, then you have nothing to lose and play them. There are a lot of things to gripe about today, but sitting Pittman while in foul trouble and with a lead is not one of them..

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 5:14 PM CST reply actions

The only think lighting a fire under Pittman is two for one tacos at Jack in the Box at this point. He looks about as bad these last few games as he looked good the first quarter of the season.

by uthookem on Jan 23, 2010 5:14 PM CST reply actions

Vash – That’s wrong.

UConn is way more athletic than we are. They don’t have anybody coming off the bench like Lucas, Chapman or Hill. As I said, Mason ain’t what he was. And Pittman is not a freakish eraser.

Damion is the go-to-guy and glue to the team that brings his hard hat every game. He’s been as much of a leader as you could hope from a personality that is not naturally inclined to do so. Leader on the court are typically guards and typically PG because they can control tempo, pace, and flow of the game because they have the ball in their hands so much. So on the floor, is Dogus our leader?

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 5:17 PM CST reply actions

Egg, so you don’t think it matters when Pittman gets his minutes? I mean, he’s only getting twenty anyway. You act like he’s David Robinson, why not play him when it matters? And then, you fucking bring him in down double digits when we need to pressure, it doesn’t make sense.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 5:18 PM CST reply actions

I’m not sure about that mpayne. If we don’t find some kind of identity, then we are done. Sure, we’ll make the Sweet 16, but this is a team that is supposedly built for a long run.

Barnes wants to run offense through Pittman, but when he picks up two fouls in the first five minutes of play, and can’t stay on the court more than three minutes at a time, then what to do? So we’re stuck with guards that aren’t really point guards, or a point guard that I could beat in a game of horse handling the rock.

Unless James, Bradley, or Johnson (to some extent) play out of their minds, we beat no one with a pulse.

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 23, 2010 5:20 PM CST reply actions

uthookem, there is only one honest way to look at it. We either have our best team on the floor with Pittman or without. If it is without, then it doesn’t matter if he sits while in foul trouble, lead or no lead. If it is with Pittman, we have our best chance with him in.

It’s not like we needed a three pointer with 10 seconds to go in the game. It was a double digit deficit with 8 minutes to go.

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 5:20 PM CST reply actions

damn, a blowout. overrated is an understatement. Maybe the talent isn’t what we all thought it was? too much hype to start this season based on our coaching history. I didn’t think Dexter had hands like feet either but it’s been a weird season. This is still a sweet 16 team, easily. What could calipari or self do with this team from an offensive standpoint? not sure any better b/c he can’t make the players make layups or free throws but but maybe at least put them in better positions to succeed.

Balls.

When are AB, JH, and JB going to grow up again? ’Cause the reason why we suck right now is because we are getting absolutely jack shit from 3 of the 5 most talented players on the roster.

“Maybe, but we have looked like dogshit for 6 straight games.”

Exactly so. People who think we’re freaking over one bad game aren’t paying attention.

by CrazyJoeDavola66 on Jan 23, 2010 5:24 PM CST reply actions

Trips, if you pressure the ball you need a backstop. It does matter when Pittman gets his minutes, and if he is in foul trouble and the team is up, you sit him. If the game is slipping away, you have nothing to lose and you play him.

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 5:24 PM CST reply actions

Eggnog, that’s horseshit. Your best team up 4 is a different team than your best team down 10.

by Trips Right on Jan 23, 2010 5:24 PM CST reply actions

Well, if getting outscored by 24 in 16 mins. doesn’t wake up the staff and the team then nothing will. We better try something different next game.

I agree greatly with mpayne and Sailor. We actually aren’t a very athletic team. James is an incredible speciman. Bradley is very atheletic, as is Dogus, but outside of that. JCB has very good skills but he’s actually fairly slow and lacks quickness. Lucas is a midget. Hamilton has good skills for his size but isn’t as athletic as advertised. Not a lot of explosion in him nor does he have a quick first step. Pittman is physical, but he’s not athletic lacking quickness. Hill and Chapman, enough said. Mason is fairly atheltic but has limited skills, same with Wangmene. Ward’s loss, who was very athletic and had good skills, is being felt more and more…..

Oh, we all pine for Varez, me included. But if he were healthy Barnes would not play ihm enough because Barnes hates hispanic names. I made that up. But I never figured out why Varez didn’t play more last year either.

Calm down…I hoped we’d play well but certainly didn’t expect it after that K State loss. The season isn’t over and this overrated is an understatement is ridiculous. We are young, we play bad if we get down on the road, especially after our first loss. If we get in foul trouble, we have problems like any other team. The only reason we will not make it far in the tournament is if we keep shooting free throws this poorly. It can’t get any worse…I for one think we will get this out of our heads and come back on fire with Pittman talk like it was earlier in the season when teams couldn’t get easy layups on us.

All we have to do is do better in 1 aspect of our game and we start knocking off good teams again…it’ll come back, the sky is not falling.

by LoneOptimist on Jan 23, 2010 5:27 PM CST reply actions

Well, we have Tech and Baylor at home, so that should help get us back on track, but then we go up to Oklahoma for big games against both of the numbnut schools up there.

If we play like we did today, we win one, maybe two. If we can somehow find a decent rotation of players, then we win three. I see this team dropping five or six at least, through the rest of the season unless drastic changes are made.

Agree on Varez not being there, but it’s not like he went out last week. Barnes should have been able to fill that void by now. No excuses when we are supposed to be this loaded.

by uthookem on Jan 23, 2010 5:28 PM CST reply actions

i disagree somewhat with the idea that barnes has not decided on an identity. he’s determined that dexter will be the focal point of the offense and that we’d wear teams down defensively with our on-ball pressure and depth. now, is that the proper identity? that’s debatable, especially given our last few games. offensively, i think we need to readjust because i have no confidence in dexter snapping out of it. i put a lot of responsibility on him right now. he’s also a senior and, from all the reports in the preseason, was being looked to for as much leadership as damion james. when the guy that was supposed to provide our offensive identity goes into the tank like this, it’s no wonder that we look to be in disarray.

by mpayne on Jan 23, 2010 5:28 PM CST reply actions

Didn’t watch the game, just checked the box score. Was the 30-15 foul discrepancy deserved?

Easily the most frustrating Rick Barnes team yet. So much talent running around with no clue what they’re doing.

by Huckleberry on Jan 23, 2010 5:31 PM CST reply actions

Being down 10 with 8 minutes to go isn’t panic time, at least it shouldn’t be. Down 10 with 2 minutes left is a different story.

Two stops and two buckets cuts the lead to 5 or 6 with over 6 minutes to play. Two stops and two buckets at a pivotal point midway through the second half is not too much to ask for and certainly shouldn’t require specialist personnel.

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 5:31 PM CST reply actions

Huck — no the officiating was awful

by ghostofagroundgame on Jan 23, 2010 5:31 PM CST reply actions

Who is BB gonna start up top?

by LoneOptimist on Jan 23, 2010 5:31 PM CST reply actions

Huck, the final foul discrepancy was a little bit because we fouled at the end.

At one point in the first half we had 6 fouls to their 1, and again in the second half we roared out to 6 fouls to 1. The officiating was a little one sided, though not completely terrible. Balbay and Pittman were targets from the refs, and were not allowed to play their game.

Guys: 88-74. I told you. Not bad from a professor of mathematical statistics.

ghost, holla atcha in a little.

Hey, atleast we aren’t blue blood elitist Yankee bastards.

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 5:37 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, Pittman hasn’t been allowed to play his game for some time now…maybe that should be a clue that we need to mix it up?

And Doge roared out with 3 fouls in the first 90 seconds of the 2nd half…all of them deserved but based on hustle.

This team won so easily early in the year, and right now is playing with a lack of heart and without a knowledge of how to put away a team.

by uthookem on Jan 23, 2010 5:37 PM CST reply actions

The examples of coaches playing players in foul trouble before the game becomes a double deficit contest are legion. Especially when that coach has already indicated, through substituion patterns, that he thinks his team is 11 or 12 players deep. Barnes needs an economics course in the worst way.

Texas Scoring Defense (PPG Allowed) Rank since 2002

2002 227
2003 170
2004 107
2005 160
2006 26
2007 252
2008 82
2009 111
2010 94

I know many of you like to use the Ken P. rankings to justify the Texas D, but the assumption that Rick Barnes is a great defensive coach is just that, an assumption. It is truly a myth.

by bigz on Jan 23, 2010 5:40 PM CST reply actions

“Balbay and Pittman were targets from the refs, and were not allowed to play their game.”

Other than that, it wasn’t completely terrible you say? 2 of our 5 starters got sodomized by the zebras and you say it wasn’t that bad? Riiiiiiigggghhhht….

by magnusbleuveigner on Jan 23, 2010 5:41 PM CST reply actions

I agree mpayne. We need to change our offensive identity away from an inside-out mindset with Dexter anchoring it to more motion and weak side screens. We’ve been trying to play a lot of high pick and roll recently with Damion playing high screener lately because Dex has been so bad and that’s a good plan with Dogus and Damion on the court but we don’t have anyone else that has a good feel for it and also Rick doesn’t trust JCB (why would you at this point) and his decision making in the lane and Jai is just too small to finish. We seem to get really stagnant on offense if our first set doesn’t work. Very NBAish.

On defense, we need to stop with the whole high pressure, overplay passing lanes defense. Our big guys aren’t athletic enough to handle it. A lot of our defenses woes come from not being able to defend the pick and roll, especially Dexter’s and our weakside help defense isn’t very good especially JH’s and JCB’s. We need to sag a little more offside if we’re going to have Dex or Wangmene or Chappy in the game and also have the big guys flash as our guards go under the pick and then get back to pick guy. We don’t do that and it’s a major problem. We also need to play zone more. 2-3 or 2-1-2 with Dex. This may help him not pick up so many fouls and also reduces the amount of territory that he has to defend. Saying that, I know it won’t happen and I have to hope that the freshmen and Dexter somehow get better at decision making.

I love Barnes and what he has done for the program but he’s rigid and has his own limitations. He reminds me so much of M Brown. Great recruiter but limited schematically that needs to rely on better athletes or a great QB (PG) to succeed. That said, the season is far from over, we are very talented, and I still have hope that we can iron out some of the issues that have been exploited the last month….

by Patrick Bateman on Jan 23, 2010 5:41 PM CST reply actions

We just don’t play well. No natural flow and we are always making excuses for them not finishing, bad bounces, luck, ect. I say BS this is who we are and its not going to get much better. There has been no improvement, if anyhing we’ve degressed. So its ridicious to assume we are going to get better to where we are confident about this team going far in the playoffs

guys, I focused strictly on the game once we went down by 10 and stopped watching the thread. After the game, I checked back in to see what everyone was saying. Take my advice, don’t read this thread because some of the comments do not represent the posting personality many of you have.

Barnes is masterful at preparing his teams for the tourney. Do you really think it is different this year? I don’t want him to curl into the fetal position just because we are highly ranked. The goal is to be in it at the end and to be the last to cut down the nets in the years when everything falls correctly. Unlike football, we do not have to win each game along the way.

We have freshmen that must continue to mature in order to win it all. When they do, Pittman and James will have an easier time of it. For the freshmen to mature, they are going to have to practice and take their lumps in games, as well. If you disagree, fine, you are entitled to your opinion. However, in my experience, nothing is a substitute for real time, heat-of-battle competitive experience.

Get a grip, and show some BC Moxy. #1 at the end is all that matters.

PPG is a very limited way to look at defense, especially for basketball. Tempo factors in way to much to judge a team on that stat alone. FG% is a much better measure, as well as points per shot. In college hoops many lesser talented teams slow the game down, play with less possessions and therefore give up less points.

Our team this year isn’t great at forcing bad shots and holding FG% down. They pressure and force turnovers leading to easy baskets. We are more likely to get a blocked shot or a steal than to actually force a tough shot with a hand in the face.

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 5:50 PM CST reply actions

magnus, the officiating wasn’t as bad as I have seen before. I felt they called things way too tight on Balbay and Pittman. Aside from those 9 fouls, it was pretty even.

That is quite a big aside though.

by EggNog on Jan 23, 2010 5:52 PM CST reply actions

Java I did the opposite and not sure what your point is.

by Mysterious Package on Jan 23, 2010 5:56 PM CST reply actions

Don’t know why anyone’s worked up over this. It’s the annual Texas Stagger in January. I don’t know why we do it, but we do it almost every year. Couple the January stagger with gawdawful in-game management—why oh why does Rick not call a timeout when the other team gets on a run?—and the inability to finish around the rim (another recurring theme over the years), and this outcome is not much of a surprise.

Plus UConn’s frontcourt is so much longer and more athletic than the Texas front court it’s not even funny. UConn was never in the position of having to put a Matt Hill or Clint Chapman on the floor. And their starting bigs can play more than 3 minutes at a stretch. My god.

And finally, forget the damn #1 ranking. If Texas were in the Big East we’d lose about 6 conference games, let’s not kid ourselves. For that matter we could lose a few more in the Big XII. Rick has never gone better than 13-3 in conference, and I certainly don’t see Texas exceeding that this year considering the conference strength.

by spit and tears on Jan 23, 2010 5:56 PM CST reply actions

Agreed. I’ve seen much worse officiating. We just committed too many idiotic fouls.

The bar at the Nathan Hale is packed. UConn fans already talking national championship.

mysterious package, your comments were true to your posting persona. You were objective, and stated your opinion quickly and clearly.

I just don’t see how we can look at a young team in January, on the road, and believe the sky is falling. Barnes will get it together. If he doesn’t, I will be completely surprised.

Like everyone here, I love to win and suffer when we don’t. At least with basketball, it all hinges on the tourney. All is won or lost in March.

Vasherized, I feel for you. It sucks to be in enemy territory after a loss.
