Kansas Open Thread

If we can stop Luke Axtell, we might have a chance.

By the way, Gary Johnson to get the start over Justin Mason per Craig Way on the pregame.

Ha ha. That’s the best “if we can stop….” yet. Well played.

I need y’all to paint the picture for me tonight. I’m at my friends house and this fag is watching The Jack Bauer Hour at 8. I can’t complain too much as I’m drinking his gin and about to eat chops but you’d expect more out of a UT grad.

by magnusbleuveigner on Feb 8, 2010 7:39 PM CST reply actions

Power Hour. The Jack Bauer Power Hour. Now he’s happy. Fucking sit-coms.

by magnusbleuveigner on Feb 8, 2010 7:40 PM CST reply actions

Magnus, I didn’t pick you for one to let yourself be limpwristbitchslapped like that.

by texastough on Feb 8, 2010 7:42 PM CST reply actions

Please don’t incite me.

Forgot this fool has a man-cave. I’ll be watching. Feel free to type your thoughts in the most non-descriptive manner.

by magnusbleuveigner on Feb 8, 2010 7:45 PM CST reply actions

Wow…Magnus, that must be some pretty good gin. Are you eating the chops off of his naked wife?

by uthookem on Feb 8, 2010 7:46 PM CST reply actions

Magnus, a true UT grad would make like a banana and split for the closest sports bar. Jack Bauer’s a cool guy, but unless Elisha Cuthbert is going to walk around nakeder than the day she was born, there ain’t no reason to pick a jumped the shark tv show over your jumped the shark basketball team.

by jc25 on Feb 8, 2010 7:48 PM CST reply actions

Alright fellas, I’m now sequestering myself in the man-cave with the naked wife and gin. I’m actually hoping these chops are pretty thin so he can just slide them under the door when they’re ready.

by magnusbleuveigner on Feb 8, 2010 7:52 PM CST reply actions

If we play like we have been, The Jack Bauer Power Hour is going to look pretty good.

by Blueshorn on Feb 8, 2010 7:56 PM CST reply actions

Good win for Nova if they can hold on. I don’t know what it is, but I can’t stand Big East basketball, even if they have 4 teams in the top 10. Give me Duke-Carolina, give me white guys from Indiana and Iowa, give me little guys like mini’s like Nate Robinson. Somehow Bob Huggins is to blame for all this.

by jc25 on Feb 8, 2010 7:57 PM CST reply actions

Since tip isn’t quite ready. I’m going to live blog the JBPH. I’ve never seen this show but I understand the premise is each show represents one hour of the day. Seems like it would be a real boring 8 week stretch when he’s getting some shut eye. What would constitute a good episode during this stretch? He gets up to take a leak?

He just capped a fool in the chest. We could use him on our team. Good accuracy from close range is one thing we’re definitely missing.

by magnusbleuveigner on Feb 8, 2010 7:58 PM CST reply actions

Naturally as I submit that, WVU gets an And 1 on a 3. Down 5 with 2 to play. ESPN360 is a likely possibility.

by jc25 on Feb 8, 2010 7:58 PM CST reply actions

Loved watching Nate Rob play although I kind of like UW. They have another scoring midget in Isaiah Thomas. Not the Florida Atlantic coach.

Big East ball was fun to watch in the Ray Allen/Iverson days.

by magnusbleuveigner on Feb 8, 2010 8:00 PM CST reply actions

Kevin Jones almost airmailed a FT but Ebanks got the putback. Down 7 with 43 secs left. WVU has one more timeout. ESPN360 still in standby.

by jc25 on Feb 8, 2010 8:03 PM CST reply actions

Again, why don’t Big East games start at 6:45? It took three minutes to play 11 seconds (as I type, another foul is called).

by radiosilence on Feb 8, 2010 8:04 PM CST reply actions

I do mean 5:45 Central Time, by the way.

by radiosilence on Feb 8, 2010 8:05 PM CST reply actions

Yep. That was a totally clutch stroke with the Luke Axtell reference. Nice. Maybe that’s the karmic shift we’ve been looking for.

by Chooky on Feb 8, 2010 8:06 PM CST reply actions

I’m convinced that ESPN does this shit on purpose to drive hits to ESPN360.com

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 8:06 PM CST reply actions

GJ just drew a foul on 360. That probably happened a minute ago in real time.

by jc25 on Feb 8, 2010 8:09 PM CST reply actions

Huge early foul on Aldrich. Rick cites that he subbed Gary because Mason was being sagged off of. No shit rick.

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 8:09 PM CST reply actions

3 for X early. Bad news if he’s hot. Good news if he goes into Jordan Hamilton mode and still cold.

by jc25 on Feb 8, 2010 8:10 PM CST reply actions

What the hell was wrong with Luke? Some people said he had AIDS and others said he was exposed to nuclear chemicals. That guy sucked.

by FrankMartinsTemper on Feb 8, 2010 8:13 PM CST reply actions

Pittman plays 3 and a half minutes before getting a break.

by Blueshorn on Feb 8, 2010 8:14 PM CST reply actions

The Morris Twins always play well in states where you can carry your weapons in a holster.

by FrankMartinsTemper on Feb 8, 2010 8:14 PM CST reply actions

Why do we show so aggressively on screens 35 ft from the basket?

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 8:17 PM CST reply actions

Luke lives with a woman who is my best friend’s co-worker (she and Luke were sweethearts at Westlake). Says he’s very chill, living out a normal life in Hutto.

by sizzlechest on Feb 8, 2010 8:19 PM CST reply actions

Showing 35 ft with a 240 pound statue from Cameroon no less…

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:20 PM CST reply actions

I like the starting lineup change, although I’m not sure how Gary Johnson really keeps people from sagging off. I mean, he’s not a deep threat. If anything, it would seem to make the lane more crowded.

by Steve Nebraska on Feb 8, 2010 8:20 PM CST reply actions

Nice J’stepback for 3!

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:21 PM CST reply actions

Great energy.

by Scipio Tex on Feb 8, 2010 8:21 PM CST reply actions

Morris hurt his pistol hand.

by FrankMartinsTemper on Feb 8, 2010 8:21 PM CST reply actions

Dirty, gritty stuff under the hoop from Damion.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:22 PM CST reply actions

This team finally looks tired of losing.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:23 PM CST reply actions

Steve, at least Gary can threaten the other block or high post while Damion James floats on the perimeter. Net net it helps a lot and we don’t sacrifice defense.

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 8:23 PM CST reply actions

Need to keep an eye on Eveningmoon.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:24 PM CST reply actions

Does Kansas just grow goofy sharpshooting white dudes in a lab somewhere? Where do they find these boners?

Dex just looks fat slow and soft next to Ostertag v.2 , kinda exposes the kid. He really needs a big game tonight.

by FrankMartinsTemper on Feb 8, 2010 8:24 PM CST reply actions

Horseshit call on Damion. Bailing out a 6-4 guard on the board.

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 8:25 PM CST reply actions

Gary can hit the 15 ft jumper. Mason’s comfort zone is 15 inches.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:26 PM CST reply actions

Not picking on the guy, but when did Dex grow that gut?? That was not there in November, maybe it was just the TV angle, but he looks really out of shape.

by FrankMartinsTemper on Feb 8, 2010 8:26 PM CST reply actions

Dex is outplaying Aldrich head to head so far.

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 8:26 PM CST reply actions

I’ve lost count of how many times we have gotten a TO, but not made the other team pay for their mistake. And how many times the ball has gone OB off our players trying to make rebounds.

by texoz on Feb 8, 2010 8:27 PM CST reply actions

Giving Kansas too many second chance points off of bumbled rebounds.

That last turnover on our baseline looked like a failed Globetrotters skit.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:27 PM CST reply actions

Meant to add….In the past 8 games or so.

by texoz on Feb 8, 2010 8:27 PM CST reply actions

Right, I get that…I was more specifically responding to the reasoning you attributed to Barnes. Obviously, if freeing things up for Dex and surrounding him with shooters was the goal, Hamilton would be starting. But his help defense deficiencies make Blake Gideon look like Darren Woodson in run support.

by Steve Nebraska on Feb 8, 2010 8:28 PM CST reply actions

That’s not his gut, Frank. That’s his cock all coiled up. These new unis don’t mask the monster as well as the old ones.

by sizzlechest on Feb 8, 2010 8:28 PM CST reply actions

Frank, it must be the svelte new jerseys. Or Dex decided to eat his way out of his slump.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:29 PM CST reply actions

why not post James up on Morningstar?

by commish on Feb 8, 2010 8:29 PM CST reply actions

Dexter that is YOUR fucking rebound. Own it.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:30 PM CST reply actions

Terrible shot, Jordan. He loves that off balance jumper.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:32 PM CST reply actions

Nice Balboard!

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:32 PM CST reply actions

Don’t understand the huge lineup we just played there. I’m all for size but Chapman in the high post is not good.

damn whitey

by austin 420 on Feb 8, 2010 8:32 PM CST reply actions

wow. Pittman was tripled teamed and our guys are standing around.

by texoz on Feb 8, 2010 8:33 PM CST reply actions

interesting that KU is putting a Morris on Dex instead of Aldrich, presumably to keep him out of foul trouble

by commish on Feb 8, 2010 8:33 PM CST reply actions

Rick is fucking with us again.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:33 PM CST reply actions

No transition defense, we’re so lazy getting back..

by Patrick Bateman on Feb 8, 2010 8:33 PM CST reply actions

This looks more familiar. Terrible offense feeding shitty defense.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:34 PM CST reply actions

Our turnovers are not dumb. They are calculated jabs at our fanbase.

by Steve Nebraska on Feb 8, 2010 8:34 PM CST reply actions

Energy lost.

Gut wrenching team to watch. Barnes looks clueless.

by beowulf on Feb 8, 2010 8:37 PM CST reply actions

No one can score but Damion. They’re doubling Dex, the play is diagonal but he’s not a good enough passer to get in there. Kansas’ defense is very good thus far.

by Patrick Bateman on Feb 8, 2010 8:37 PM CST reply actions

someone needs to tell Hamilton to quit shooting with 30 seconds on the shot clock

by commish on Feb 8, 2010 8:38 PM CST reply actions

I can sense a collective nutsack collapse occurring on the Texas bench.

We need some guys to grow a pair and shove the rock through the net.

by texoz on Feb 8, 2010 8:38 PM CST reply actions

Done with this team and this coaching staff. They’re just not fun to watch.

by RichUT on Feb 8, 2010 8:38 PM CST reply actions

We look really good when Damion James and j’covan brown are hitting step back 3’s. When we have to manufacture buckets, not so much. Time to turn this into a 94 foot game. It’s our only shot.

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 8:38 PM CST reply actions

This is going to be a blowout. Cocktail anyone?

by TMhorn on Feb 8, 2010 8:38 PM CST reply actions

Morris set a perfect screen for Henry and he drains the open jumper, UConn style.

I’m jealous.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:38 PM CST reply actions

It’s amazing what you can accomplish when more than 2-3 players on the floor understand off-ball defensive principles.

Westlake sucks.

Jai Lucas should be playing for Texas State. Off the bench.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 8:43 PM CST reply actions

Wow, that’s ball movement. Wholesome goodness.

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 8:46 PM CST reply actions

by Patrick Bateman on Feb 8, 2010 8:47 PM CST reply actions

That’s not a fucking foul, not the way this game has been played.

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 8:47 PM CST reply actions

Watching KU’s players points out how bad our players are. We just are not very talented. Other than James, I can’t think of another player that Self would take off our team.

I’ve seen better offensive basketball at the 24 hour fitness on Hancock.

by Steve Nebraska on Feb 8, 2010 8:48 PM CST reply actions

by Scipio Tex on Feb 8, 2010 8:59 PM CST reply actions

Don’t fool yourself RS, Self would love to have talent like James, Bradley, Hamilton, Brown, Balbay, and Johnson. He could turn Chapman and Pittman into great 15-20 minute backups. This team is loaded with talent. Barnes is doing a shitty job coaching.

by Holy Cow on Feb 8, 2010 8:59 PM CST reply actions

our offense sucks swollen donkey balls. I mean what the fuck do we call that stand around and look at each other bullshit. Barnes fucking sucks as a coach apparently. This team is ten times worse than they were to start the season.

Hubert Davis is alright, but he intentionally avoids any commentary on defense.

by Steve Nebraska on Feb 8, 2010 9:02 PM CST reply actions

It was easer to digest our offensive incompetency with less talented teams.

When a squad full of future NBA players looks like humping dingos, furniture gets broken. And I’m sending Barnes the fucking bill.

by Vasherized on Feb 8, 2010 9:02 PM CST reply actions

Does Barnes even look at who he is putting in and when? It seems like he randomly points at someone on the bench. I’m surprised that Paulino hasn’t taken the floor at this rate.

by jinx on Feb 8, 2010 9:03 PM CST reply actions

We held KU to 34 in the first half, which isn’t too shabby.

However, that’s wasted because halfway through the season we still have no f’ing clue what to do on offense

by texoz on Feb 8, 2010 9:03 PM CST reply actions

UT -2 second half….

by Fundamentals on Feb 8, 2010 9:04 PM CST reply actions

Damian James is a really special player. T.J. Ford-ish?

by Ag_in_TX on Feb 8, 2010 9:05 PM CST reply actions

KU is simply a much, much better-coached team. I can appreciate some of their sets and plays, no matter how painful the result. Our offensive end looks like open rec play at Gregory.

Barnes’ comments re Johnson over Mason are just hard to hear this late into the season. “Bleeding for the program”? That’s bullshit – you owe your allegiance to your employer, your customers and your team – not a kid who is clearly overmatched and is able to contribute little.

This might be the season we collectively begin to envision a future without Rick Barnes. Kind of shitty I know, but Barnes has to live by the same principle he should have applied re Mason months ago.

by blackscholes on Feb 8, 2010 9:05 PM CST reply actions

Wait, that means UT is favored to win the game by 2, or just score 2 points in the second half?

by texoz on Feb 8, 2010 9:06 PM CST reply actions

“However, that’s wasted because halfway through the season we still have no f’ing clue what to do on offense”

I’m pressed to think of a time that we’ve ever had a clue what to do on offense sans a transcendent point guard or Kevin Durant.

Matt Hall and Jai Lucas combine for 43 in the second half as we cruise to victory. 78-53

by NY Horn on Feb 8, 2010 9:06 PM CST reply actions

texoz, yep, forced some empty possessions with a zone and even played pretty well off the ball in our m2m, actually, if we rebound a litte better we’re probaby only down 4-6.

On another note, it’s amazing how easy Villanova scores the ball. They scored at will tonight against a pretty good WVA team.

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 9:07 PM CST reply actions

Crikey. I’ll be shocked if we come back to win this.

Who do we start in the second half? I’ll go with James, Hill, Mason, Balbay and Wangemene. That should be some firepower

by Bartoncreek on Feb 8, 2010 9:10 PM CST reply actions

Maybe if he j’decked someone it would prove he has a pulse. That would make two on this team.

Over under on Hamilton’s minutes in the second half?

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 9:11 PM CST reply actions

I’m good with Barnes stepping down tomorrow at this point. I got my hopes too high for this team admittedly, but this is the definition of crash and burn. HOLY FUCK!

Has Barnes never won a Big 12 tournament? Seems like that’s what the graphic showed earlier. I know we’ve played for it many times, but it seems like we (should have) won one. I mean if you can’t win the Big 12 tourney, why would you expect to win the big one?

gRY JOHNSON TRvled

by austin 420 on Feb 8, 2010 9:37 PM CST reply actions

Oh I guess it s the fouling thats causing Dex’s feet to not leave the ground because he is so out of shape and tired. He has been exposed tonight, if you want to fall in love with his potential be my guest, but thats all it is at this point.

Dex has been in double digits a grand total of 2 times in the last 10 games.and double digit boards once.

Thats pathetic for a guy with that type of talent and size, period.

by Mack McLovin on Feb 8, 2010 9:37 PM CST reply actions

Does Pittman have a pump fake??? Aldrich wears our team out with it.

by uthookem on Feb 8, 2010 9:39 PM CST reply actions

so balbay tried just shooting 500 3s a day and it didnt work? it seems like anyone would be able to shoot at least 33% unguarded 3s if they just practiced every day.

by austin 420 on Feb 8, 2010 9:40 PM CST reply actions

The coach who designed our offense tonight is the same guy who took us to the second round loss with Durant. Balbay cannot play the minutes he is getting and us have a chance to comb back tonight. We are playing one of the best defensive teams in the land and they are playing against four offensive players. We have no confidence or guidance. It’s pathetic and sad the way we look on offense.

by delta7er on Feb 8, 2010 9:40 PM CST reply actions

Mack, ask Cole Aldrich if he thinks Dex is a great player.

Self has already said as much by doubling him with his opposite post every time the ball is entered. I guaranfuckingtee you he’s not doing that any other center in the league.

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 9:40 PM CST reply actions

best player is 1 of 8 and still losing by double digits – is that saying something?

by commish on Feb 8, 2010 9:40 PM CST reply actions

Yep…Dex is doing great against Aldrich, and Aldrich is doing great against Dex. It’s a shame that we have no one on the floor that FUCKING MOVES AROUND the three times we’ve gotten an entry pass into Dex…

by uthookem on Feb 8, 2010 9:40 PM CST reply actions

This is so ugly. And not ugly-good like the old Pistons or Knicks. Ugly-bad.

by beowulf on Feb 8, 2010 9:43 PM CST reply actions

Mack McLovin,

Pittman leads the team with 2 assists. Team-wise 5 assists to 15 TO"s. Does that say anything about the other 4 guys on the floor or the coaching?

by n-ea on Feb 8, 2010 9:44 PM CST reply actions

Finding fault with Pittman in this thing is extremely creative negativity. Why am I even responding to that gibberish?

Kansas seemingly wants us in this game and we’re going to refuse the invitation.

by Chooky on Feb 8, 2010 9:44 PM CST reply actions

Outside of James nobody on this team can finish. Dex is the weakest 290 lber I ever seen.

by Holy Cow on Feb 8, 2010 9:44 PM CST reply actions

Yes thats great ,what was the excuse the other 8 times Dex didnt do anything this year?

How about the fact that Morris has just owned Dex giving up a ton of size.

You can make the excuses, I get it he is your guy. But the numbers dont lie, Dex hasnt done anything in conference play and has vanished in big games.

Maybe your right, I might be expecting too much from a guy thats too fat to play more than 20 minutes per game .

by Mack McLovin on Feb 8, 2010 9:45 PM CST reply actions

We double team the ball out high and both players jump beyond the player with the ball and get out of position.

Our heart and soul has come into the game to save the day, Mason comes in to provide one more player who cannot score. I would not rank our team in the top 25. It’s good we only have about 8 conference games remaining because we may just play ourselves out of the tournament. I don’t think a team has ever been 17-0 and ranked number 1 and gone on to not make the tournament. Right now we don’t look like a tournament team.

by austin 420 on Feb 8, 2010 9:53 PM CST reply actions

Not giving up on this team yet. If we lose to Nebraska…

No 24, ever. I like the fact that I never watched much TV. When I’m old and soiling myself I’ll catch up on Seinfeld and Cheers. I don’t imagine I’ll watch the 24’s and Lost’s.

Damion James is a man for the way he performs. I’ll heartily root for him to find his niche in The Association.

by magnusbleuveigner on Feb 8, 2010 9:53 PM CST reply actions

Can you imagine how bad we will be at the end of the season? I don’t think we’ve hit bottom yet.

by NY Horn on Feb 8, 2010 9:54 PM CST reply actions

For Bob Knight to say Mason should sit is saying something. Bob Knight consistently praises Mason every time he calls our games.

by Steve Nebraska on Feb 8, 2010 9:54 PM CST reply actions

“magnus, you should’ve just watched 24 and saved yourself from this crapfest.”

I’d say both shows were equally terrible tonight. Though I will say that it’s much easier to laugh at 24 than it is to laugh at the horrid coaching job going on at the morgue.

by RichUT on Feb 8, 2010 9:55 PM CST reply actions

magnus, 24 is overrated crap but Lost is genuinely good TV and makes your brain smarter, if not more frustrated.

by jc25 on Feb 8, 2010 9:55 PM CST reply actions

So where do we end up?
4 seed in the B12 tourney??

5 maybe?

by Mack McLovin on Feb 8, 2010 9:56 PM CST reply actions

Positives: Brown driving and seeking contact rather than throwing up shitty floaters. Damion hitting his FTs. Barnes realizing Mason doesn’t do anything.

by jc25 on Feb 8, 2010 9:56 PM CST reply actions

Knight brings up a good point. We rarely draw a charging foul on defense.

by texoz on Feb 8, 2010 9:56 PM CST reply actions

Bob Knight has watched us play maybe four games and he already knows who our two guards should be. Hopefully Barnes will pull his head out of his ass and figure this thing out before we have no chance with the rest of the season.

by delta7er on Feb 8, 2010 9:56 PM CST reply actions

Unfortunately, dropping Balbay for Hamilton and taking out Pittman is a severe hindrance on our D.

by jc25 on Feb 8, 2010 9:57 PM CST reply actions

Brown is Wally pipping Balbay

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 9:57 PM CST reply actions

When we play small and fast, we give everybody problems, when we lumber up and down with you trigger happy guards and soft bigs, we are just awful to watch.

Rick should really consider going small more often.

by Mack McLovin on Feb 8, 2010 9:57 PM CST reply actions

If Barnes has any sense, he’ll roll with the freshman and try and get better. Reboot if you will. We know what we are with the Mason, Dogus, Lucas, and the like. JCB, JH, AB should all start with Damion and Pittman and see if we can get good enough in the next 7 games….

by Patrick Bateman on Feb 8, 2010 9:58 PM CST reply actions

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 10:03 PM CST reply actions

Run some press, Collins throws up bad shots, and if you get a rebound down ten then you’re fast-breaking to get within 8. But I know Trips has been asking for this for weeks.

by RRR on Feb 8, 2010 10:03 PM CST reply actions

Our only offense is having J Brown playing street ball and trying to take it to the hole. This will only work if Barnes decides to roll the freshman. I don’t think he has the balls to do that.

by delta7er on Feb 8, 2010 10:03 PM CST reply actions

Tech on Aldrich. Good: he’s out. Bad: We have to shoot FTs.

See. If you thought that was a basketball move you’re stoned.

by Trips Right on Feb 8, 2010 10:04 PM CST reply actions

Mack,

Please stop. Pittman could log more minutes if Barnes would actually pull his head out of his ass and play him. It be nice too if he didn’t put Balbay and Mason in the game with him and curb Hamilton and Brown everytime they jack up a contested 3 with 30 seconds left on the shot clock. Oh, and whiles he’s at it actually develop an offensive system that involves ball rotation, pick n rolls, screens…that sort of thing. I enjoy the and 1 exhibition games as much as anyone, I just don’t want that to be the Longhorn offense.

by n-ea on Feb 8, 2010 10:04 PM CST reply actions

Our only chance at making it to the sweet sixteen:

Starters:
James
Pittman
Johnson
Bradley
Brown

First off the bench:
Hamilton

Second off the bench:
Balbay

Anyone else should only be in for mop-up near the TV time outs, and at the end of the half/game.

Sadly, it won’t come close to that and we’ll get bounced in the second round after hearing about how we were once ranked #1 and then fell all the way to a #5 seed in the tourney…at best.

UT Hookem’. I’d prefer Hamilton over Gary in the starting lineup. Only because of mentality. I think Gary, being a veteran, can handle being a 6th man a lot better then JH at this point. I think JH and JCB, until this game, are confused about whether or if they’ll get minutes. They have higher upside then the other guys and F’ it, what do we have to lose?

by Patrick Bateman on Feb 8, 2010 10:22 PM CST reply actions

I’ll take Hamilton in the game the rest of the season for 25 minutes a game and we will be a better team in the long run. We must have 5 players who can score to have a chance against the premier teams in the country. I agree that he will have to have better shot selection. The fact is we have two players who can create their own shots and that is Brown and Hamilton. We can bitch on this forum all we want but if our coach doesn’t figure that out soon, we are in a lot of trouble. Just like Knight is talking about Brown and Bradley must play 30 plus minutes at the 1 and 2. Then we have to have a combination of Johnson, Dex and Hamilton playing with James and the two guards. If we figure out how to use that six man rotation and use Balbay and a big man off the bench just for short blows we might have a chance. I’m not sure Barnes will make that switch. We went the first 12 minutes of the second half with Balbay in we scored three baskets. I know it was not all his fault but when you play four on five against an elite team that will be the end result.

Good post Delta. Someone needs to actually scare the shit out of Barnes. He needs to understand that Mason is nothing but a bench guy, 6-8 minutes maybe, now. Dogus should hit the bench too. We need a front court of Pittman/DJ/Hamilton/GJ/ and then white guy stiff for a few minutes or where matchup dictates. Playing three guards sucks if we won’t up the tempo or press. Again, if we fail with the young lineup, at least we’ll be better for next year.

Hell, Mizzou might be the second best program in the conference in a year or two. I don’t know how we can maintain our recruiting when kids are watching this on TV.

by NY Horn on Feb 8, 2010 10:41 PM CST reply actions

One piece of good news for the day for the Horns. They picked up a verbal commitment from the number one golfer in the country who is a junior, Jordan Spieth out of Dallas. He will make our team top five or better the day he shows up on campus.

by delta7er on Feb 8, 2010 10:48 PM CST reply actions

I give up on trying to be a good team. Put the young guys in and let them develop. That’s what should have happened earlier in the season instead of yanking guys on every mistake. Might as well do it now and hopefully start seeing improvement on the back end of the conference schedule and into the tournament. Balbay is Freddie Williams. He’s situational. Justin Mason is Freddie Williams unless he’s going to shoot some. Pittman is in the way. I’d rather see Chapman.

And I don’t care if the team sucks at it. Pick a random team out of a hat and copy their offense. Start running it tomorrow and run it all game next game. It will be a loss anyway, but at least there will be a goal.

Can that golfer shoot free throws, and dribble penetrate?

by texoz on Feb 8, 2010 10:52 PM CST reply actions

Positives:

Defense was tremendous. Collins and Aldrich combined for 5-23. Too bad our offense is what’s our worst defense. We’re learning that an efficient offense that doesn’t turn it over and doesn’t take poor shots is actually a great defense in itself. How many points did KU score off of turnovers and poor shot selection?

Damion James = WARRIOR. I might tear up on his last game – whenever it is. He deserves to go out a winner.

Downtown J’Covan Brown – I wonder how much of his great play was a result of KU relaxing late in the game, but he made some difficult jumpers and sunk 8-9 free throws. Don’t be surprised if Barnes throws him back into the starting lineup, just like the beginning of the season.

Balbay and Mason not starting together. While it didn’t look like it helped tonight, it wasn’t going to matter against one of the best defenses in the country.

by UT_64 on Feb 8, 2010 10:52 PM CST reply actions

I thought I remembered a stat one time in the game where it said KU 21 points off turnovers and UT 0.

by delta7er on Feb 8, 2010 10:55 PM CST reply actions

Well, I don’t think Texas brought more energy/enthusiasm than KU this time. I was glad to see the ’Hawks play well (in the first half anyway).

However, you all were dead-on about Texas’ offense. Holy crap. Just awful.

Those of you bitching about the refs really shouldn’t: Texas got the lion’s share of calls going into the last couple of minutes. It won’t look like it though because the ’Horns started the late-game-foul-to-stop-the-clock routine. I will say that Aldrich absolutely deserved that technical. He lost his cool right there. That being said, I would too if someone tried to saddle me up and ride off into the sunset the way James did.

Well, the game’s done and it’s time to look to the next one on the schedule. Best of luck to your Longhorns and maybe we’ll get a rematch in the Big XII tournament.

Oh, and Rick Barnes couldn’t hold Bill Self’s jock when it comes to coaching. Not even close.

Home from the game after an outstanding tailgating experience in Lot 80 starting at 5:30. Oh my, what a game of action, good coaching and concerted effort by both teams!!!!!!!! I had so much fun watching the action, I have asked for a redo in Abilene with the oral surgeon who removed my wisdom teeth in the late 70’s. Barnes is the man. How much do we pay him by the way for the product we regularly have the blessing of watching in person or in the internets? I need his home address as I crave leaving my personal mark on his door step. We suck. He should shoulder all the blame!

by absolut on Feb 8, 2010 11:33 PM CST reply actions

Fundamentally on both sides of the ball we are very weak. On defense we are athletic but don’t really understand when to pressure the ball or double team. Many times we over persue at a time when the offensive player is not in a dangerous position and end up giving up an easy look. The problem is we are very weak on team and help defense. I would guess we have picked up less than 5 charges as a team for the year and that is sad.
Offensively it is even more pronounced. With so few players able to create on their own we have just fallen off the earth. J Brown had a nice second half and hopefully we can build on that but that will take a big adjustment by Barnes and I’m not sure he is up to it. Since the A & M game we have been out coached by every team we have played. Each team has controlled the tempo and dicatated what type of game would be played. Barnes needs to start earning some of his pay and figure this thing out in a hurry. We have four road conference games remaining and we could lose every one of those. The three home games are not gimmies with the confidence we are playing with right now.
