Huge Recruiting News For Baylor

Apparently the Bears received an verbal commitment from one of the truly elite backs in the state Brandon Williams. He was supposed to be visiting Texas this coming weekend and was a shoe-in to be offered by the Horns. Now he's a Baylor Bear.

Just a huge get for BU considering Williams is vying for the top running back in the state honors along with Malcolm Brown, Aaron Green, and Herschel Sims.

This is supposed to be the best crop of talent at the running back position in the state of Texas in quite some time. Williams puportedly grew up as a huge Longhorn fan. Just weird. Perhaps he was turned off by a silent Malcolm Brown commit or maybe he didn't like being offered as an athlete.

I'm pissed...I'm stunned...It's Baylor.

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFfffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuudddddddddggggggggeeeeeeeeee! But I didn’t say it……

This hurts for a couple reasons. One, I wanted him in Austin. Two, this screws up any sense of urgency the other backs might have felt to commit.

No way in hell he ends up in Waco, but now Mack will probably cool on him. We should have invited him to the first Jr. day.

Let me save Blake Borron the time…..we didn’t need him, blah blah, doesn’t look fast yada yada.

SH*T,

By that I mean good for them, but I cant help but wonder if his recruitment will follow the Ahmed Dixon path.

Wow.

Let’s see how long this sticks.

For some reason, many of the State’s top running backs don’t seem to be flocking to play for Opie.

According to GH, he is not coming to the next Junior Day.

“maybe he didn’t like being offered as an athlete.”

Is this a guess or did we actually tell him we were looking at him as an athlete?

by texastough on Feb 15, 2010 12:09 PM CST reply actions

I’m going to get slammed for this I know [what else is new] but seriously, if you were an elite high school running back, and you had watched our running game for the last 3 years, would you want to play for us?

by ransomstoddard on Feb 15, 2010 12:10 PM CST reply actions

According to a coach I know at Brookshire, Applewhite has been by there a million times and the prevailing wisdom had Williams as a UT lock, both offer and commitment wise. Not being invited to the first Jr. day must have pissed him off.

We saw this last year with Mike Davis. Hopefully this turns out the same.

We must land Brown and one of the other three.

by magnusbleuveigner on Feb 15, 2010 12:11 PM CST reply actions

ransom — I sure wouldn’t pick Baylor.

by ghostofagroundgame on Feb 15, 2010 12:12 PM CST reply actions

No ransom, you’d run directly towards the welcoming arms of Baylor. Bad vision, imo.

This has to mean good news for Malcolm and/or Aaron Green. I’m less impressed by Williams film than most. Plus his transcript may have arrived.

The other side of this is if you were an elite high school player at any position, would you want to play for Baylor?

The fact that he chose Baylor over UT only underscores my point.

by ransomstoddard on Feb 15, 2010 12:16 PM CST reply actions

Perhaps he doesn’t fancy running behind an offensive lineman in a wheelchair.

I’m all for the paralympics, but what the fuck Mack?

If the staff can’t turn this around, this is a huge, huge failure. Conventional wisdom had this kid as the only elite back that would likely sign with us early no question. This puts us in a position of chasing the other top backs in the state, a position we haven’t exactly done well with in recent history. Fuck.

If Williams hadn’t been approved for a schollie there wouldn’t have been nearly the amount of smoke around him.

This just flat out sucks.

I doubt this will go the route of “Ahmed’s” recruitment. “Ahmed” is currently in a recruiting war with Hamas, Hezbollah, and Al Qaida. Make no mistake, Will Lyles is his agent.

That’s gonna be good backfield in a couple of years at Baylor. See if they can stop anybody or block anybody. But Baylor has always bought, I mean gotten pretty good backs.

by Speed Kills on Feb 15, 2010 12:33 PM CST reply actions

What this also tells me is the coaches remain hard-dicked about Whaley at RB by offering WIlliams as an ATH. It’s also quite a bit of the Russ Shepard treatment if you ask me.

by sizzlechest on Feb 15, 2010 12:33 PM CST reply actions

Dude, Traylon Shead is going to be a damn fine running back for this program. I dunno what the hell Whaley is going to be. Somewhere between Cody Johnson and Henry Melton probably.

ghost, not purporting to know where Whaley ends up, just the coaches thinking right now.

by milksteak on Feb 15, 2010 12:38 PM CST reply actions

Transcript comment was tongue in cheek as its a usual excuse for not offering top offensive players after we have already whiffed on him.

I was serious about his film not being as good as everyone made it out to be. What district does Brookshire Royal play in and what type of competition does he face?

If Malcolm Brown committs and Sims/Green do too, then this doesn’t matter at all and is in fact the best case scenario bc Williams did not go to a threatening program.

by dick on Feb 15, 2010 12:39 PM CST reply actions

a) See if they can block anybody?

  1. OT coming out last year… #1 C coming out this year…

We have had our problems at BU as you all love to crack on ad nauseum, but it appears that Briles knows how to develop lineman a lot better than Mac McWhorter, who would prefer to waste schollies on big guys who don’t like to hit anyone.

(See Suh’s film v. JD Walton and then Suh’s film v. Chris Hall for a good reference point)

b) I am as surprised as you guys are that a kid like this would commit to Baylor… but it’s not exactly like UT is a lynchpin for running the ball these days. I fancy myself as somewhat of a Texas fan these days given my time over in the Northeast corner of the 40 acres at Uncle Larry Sager’s Department of Mysteries, so whenever UT plays someone whose jerseys aren’t green and championship gold (yes, championship gold is as funny to me as it is to you guys). I, much like everyone else, would love to see the Horns drive down the field and punch people in the mouth. This new FB commit appears to signal that Muschamp has told Daddy Mack that he would like to do just that, and Greggy is simply going to have to hop along for the ride if he wants to stick around and collect his salary for a few more years.

Conversely, Briles has shown consistently that he is more than happy to run the ball if that is the way to get the ball in his best athletes hands. Also we run a lot of screens (read: way too many) and that is another selling point.

Look, we’ve sucked for a real long time… but it’s not like this has never happened before. Ben Gay signed with Baylor (granted his transcript looked like the translation of a Kafka novel by a German I student who didn’t know to conjugate verbs).

I’m as sure as the rest of you guys that Williams will look elsewhere, and take other visits… but if we can somehow not do stupid shit this year like run a QB sneak up 28 against directional Louisiana and let our one difference maker tear his ACL and get to the magical 6 win number (cue: laughter from the Carnival elitists) then seeing real players come to Baylor is not that far fetched.

Jesus Christ. Malcolm Brown or this class is a bust now.

by Newy25 on Feb 15, 2010 12:43 PM CST reply actions

He’s my favorite back in the class based on the limited highlight footage I’ve seen of the four big names. If he’s really not coming for the second junior day then that probably closes the book. Applewhite’s got two weeks to get him there. If he comes to junior day I can’t believe he wouldn’t commit. Mack still owes Briles for his shitty vote, so he ought to make prying this kid away a top priority.

Haha, now the Bears are coming over to talk smack. Congrats on the pickup UTLaw Bear. You still won’t have a winning season in the next 50 years. When was the last time you guys won a bowl game? 1932?

UTLawBear,

Love the take, though alot of the surprise has to do with the fact this kid was supposed to be a UT lock if we offered. Like 90%. The other 10% is dismissive elitism.

BU Bear: stop making fun of our o-line coach and our o-line players. It’s just not fair. Or funny. If this were your coach, or your players, you would be alot more sensitive about how you treat them. It’s not their fault.

I would be willing to bet that this kid never ends up in Waco. Hell, the last kid that was stupid enough to believe Art’s bullshit regarding Baylor as an up and coming force in the Big 12 couldn’t even qualify.

I’d be more concerned if he dropped Texas for Northwestern.

by Magnificent Bastard on Feb 15, 2010 1:02 PM CST reply actions

@NY Horn-

Was the self-deprecation in my post not clear enough?

I have sat through enough BU-UT games at Floyd Casey to know who is who and what is what.

But you must admit that while Art Briles is not Mack Brown, Will Muschamp, or heck, even Grunt Tuff at this point…he’s a slap ton better than Guy Morriss, Kevin Steele, et al.

I am under no delusions of BIg XII grandeur – but there is no reason we can’t be where Tech is right now… 7-5 to 9-3 every year, and competing for the Big XII title once every 15 years if the stars align perfectly and God is proud enough of our Homecoming floats to let us win one or two extra.

by UTLaw Bear on Feb 15, 2010 1:04 PM CST reply actions

Applewhite better get it together. Shead, Waley, are not the JC’s and Bensons we need to get this thing going. But maybe Mack is telling him who to recruit? I have to think that is it.
Congrats BearLaw, nice pickup and the knock on our blocking is justified as someone so elegantly stated…its like pissing in the wind.

by Mysterious Package on Feb 15, 2010 1:04 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think anyone cares or thinks that Baylor is all of sudden going to become a player in the Big12. What’s their upside? 8-5? then Briles leaves and they start their next decade of incompetence. The disappointment comes, as the General noted, that we had already grand visions of pairing this guy with Brown in a B & B backfield. The Major was on the case, shit that’s all you had to say. Apparently not. He could have committed to UConn for all we care. The destination is incidental other then it will be fun to watch the Bears squirm all the way to signing day to see if they can hold him…..

by Patrick Bateman on Feb 15, 2010 1:06 PM CST reply actions

@ NY Horn-

My “level 1 sources” (I think that is the term you guys use around here, but if not, just know that these are some of guys who have decided to let Ken Starr grace us with his presence) pretty firmly believe that he is going to qualify through some magical combination of Michael Oher’s favorite BYU distance education classes and some pretty heavy tutoring.

by UTLaw Bear on Feb 15, 2010 1:06 PM CST reply actions

This is so far out of left field that there must be more to this story. I’m not saying any improprieties have been involved, but we must have done something really, really stupid to not get him to come to the second junior day. Everyone prior to now has been saying this kid was the biggest lock of all the RB’s we’re targeting.

Haha, this is funny and impressive memory. I only posted this like twice I believe, so good memory. Seriously though, if we get Brown and Green, Brown and Sims, or (crosses fingers) even all three then nobody is going to be talking about this.

OTOH, the fact that he committed to Baylor basically knowing he was a lock to get offered in a couple weeks by UT is not only embarrassing to our program and a slap in the dick, it’s a sign of how recruits look at the UT running game lately :-/

by Blake Borron on Feb 15, 2010 1:15 PM CST reply actions

was he really that much of a Horn lock? I’ve kind of heard that but not the 90% shit people are stating here….if someone pissed him off, why Baylor then? Ol’ Briles in his ear…

First of all, this has to be the largest collection of chicken littles anywhere on the interwebs. Get a grip.

Second, where does this leave Major? I mean, I certainly want him in the program, but maybe RB coach isn’t exactly his best fit. Considering he was a quarterback….who could not run. If I was an elite back I would have some serious questions about whether or not this guy could prepare me for the NFL. And if the rumor mill is true, that means Williams chose this guy over Major:

nevermind, just heard that supposely we have Brown’s “silent commitment”, so I’m sure ol’ Mack gave Brown the Whaley promise, thus pissing Williams off or us offering him as an “ATH”. Somebody needs to explain to Brandon Williams the mistakes he’s making and not just the obvious one. Wouldn’t the prudent thing be to take your offer at the ath spot and then use that to publicize yourself? Every coach in the nation would stop what they’re doing immediately if they got a highlight tape titled, ‘By the way, UT offered.’

by magnusbleuveigner on Feb 15, 2010 2:13 PM CST reply actions

It does seem like it would be better for us to have a true RB coach, It certainly seems like Applewhite was hired for his future potential as a OC not as a RB coach.

by Patrick Bateman on Feb 15, 2010 2:24 PM CST reply actions

UT’s 1st Jr. day saw 23 players invited, with 22 having been offered, 2 RBs among them. This leads me to believe few things:

1) If UT invites the more highly athletes to the 1st Jr. day, Williams may not have been the highest RB on their board.

2) The fact 2 offers went to RBs already would make the ‘Whaley promise’ an improbability. Of course, there could always be the “first one to commit” clause associated with the offers.

Williams commitment to Baylor may indicate some hurt feelings on his part, especially with the amount of attention given to him by Applewhite, according to posters in this forum. By all accounts, he is one of the most talented recruits in the state at his position. While Baylor maybe an up-and-coming program with the current staff, he could have surveyed the field, accept his offer from UT, and take his time making a decision. There won’t be lack of suitors.

Either way, good luck to the kid and congratulations to Baylor.

I feel like everyone knew Art Briles would be able to recruit well. What I haven’t decided is if he can coach in this league. Shows flashes of brilliance, but after seeing what Paul Rhoads did with arguably less talent at Iowa State, I’m softening my position on him. He should have a better team than Rhoads with RGIII back. It’s time for Briles to step up and take Baylor bowling, or he’s going to start getting a little heat at 4-8 or 5-7. We’ll have to wait until December to see how solid this is. Big 12 coaches will be all over the “he’s getting fired next year” card without at least a .500 season.

I think Briles is going to need better talent than his opponent in most cases for his offense to work properly. I’m not sure he has that talent, nor can he recruit it at Baylor, against the likes of Texas, A&M, OSU and OU. Problem for Bear fans is that he’s no defensive guru to fall back on if he can’t get his offense untracked before they fire him. At least, that’s what scared me about him when I thought he was about to be my next head coach.

It goes like this. “Hey, come be a RB here at Univ. of Texas…you’ll get to carry the ball a couple of times per game. We’ll let you block for our QB. You’ll underachieve, but hey…you play for UT.”.

I’ll give you guys props on everything else…but your RB system is ridiculous. How can any of you actually defend your backs?

Tre’ Newton is a stud…but you guys will botch that somehow.

But it doesn’t matter who we get without a fucking OL…Earl would struggle behind these guys……

That’s a reasonable conclusion after watching the Chinese fire drill that GDGD calls a running game.

“I think Briles is going to need better talent than his opponent in most cases for his offense to work properly. I’m not sure he has that talent, nor can he recruit it at Baylor, against the likes of Texas, A&M, OSU and OU. Problem for Bear fans is that he’s no defensive guru to fall back on if he can’t get his offense untracked before they fire him.”

Ded, this post is a complete fucking mystery to me. A) regarding better talent …. see top of this page; 2) See 2010 DB class #4 in the nation and #1 in the Big 12; iii) compare last years defensive performance with a bunch of Guymo department store manequins to the year before (I know it is against the religion of this site to make such a statement without running down a 6 year adjusted excell evaluation of that statement but fuck I have to get some work done today – I will be available for trial on Heresay charges later in the week).

Me thinks someone is seeing green in their Tubbyball.

Ricky Williams, Cedric Benson, Jamaal Charles…

We aren’t as good as we could or should be, but we are still 5th in the conference in yards per carry and 6th in the conference in attempts per game. Baylor is 10th and 11th, respectively. Technically, we out gained Nebraska, OU, and Baylor in total yardage on the ground too.

Get a great OL in place and the running backs will follow….like magic…

@milksteak – you’ve proved the opposite of what you’re trying to prove…

Those guys were all Sunday 100-Yd quality running backs. Without them, the UT running game is a disaster.

If my onomotapoeia typing skills were better I’d type that buzzer sound that denotes, WRONG!!

Those guys all had Sunday quality OL in front of them and a scheme that fit their strengths. Tre Newton is 1200 yard rusher, easily. Vondrell, if in the I is a quality back. Cody Johnson is not in a scheme that suits him. Our problems are minutely the rb’s fault.

We have a shitty run scheme compounded by weak OL development. End of story.

Briles will jump ship ASAP . Briles has no allegiance to Baylor and will be gone in a heart beat if offered a buck more. The next Larry Brown of football. This kid is making a big mistake but at least not going where he could hurt us.
