that’s where starks went? figures.

by Savage Henry on Feb 24, 2010 7:39 PM CST reply actions

I didn’t know Starks went to OSU.

by nordberg on Feb 24, 2010 7:39 PM CST reply actions

I just keep coming back for more. Lets see what old Rick the Quick has up his angry sleeve tonight.

by Wyatt on Feb 24, 2010 7:41 PM CST reply actions

i quit actually caring about the results with this team and now it just seems comical.

by Savage Henry on Feb 24, 2010 7:47 PM CST reply actions

Wyatt, he’s going to try to make them all feel like shit about themselves again. 28th time is the charm.

by nordberg on Feb 24, 2010 7:48 PM CST reply actions

My seven year old keeps short pouring my Aberlour. I should have started earlier to endure this.

by Trips Right on Feb 24, 2010 7:48 PM CST reply actions

Let’s get dickish!

by sizzlechest on Feb 24, 2010 7:49 PM CST reply actions

Anyone else the the acne on the kid from Notre? Fucking gross!

by Savage Henry on Feb 24, 2010 7:53 PM CST reply actions

Trips, I think I’ve made a horrible mistake. I had some gin, and then had some wine with dinner. But then I went back to the gin, and the game hasn’t even started yet. I think I’ll switch to water until halftime.

by nordberg on Feb 24, 2010 7:55 PM CST reply actions

nord, why the fuck would you do that?

by Trips Right on Feb 24, 2010 7:59 PM CST reply actions

I don’t know.

Sounds like there are about 12 people at the game. When OSU has the ball, you can hear individual voices making noise.

by nordberg on Feb 24, 2010 8:02 PM CST reply actions

there was a teaching moment. Good gravy JCB.

by Art Vandelay on Feb 24, 2010 8:02 PM CST reply actions

Alright for someone trapped at the office in bumfuck, Texas, could someone please give a score!

by BornaHorn on Feb 24, 2010 8:08 PM CST reply actions

We rebound for shit.

by Trips Right on Feb 24, 2010 8:08 PM CST reply actions

Ha. Brown is out. See you in March, J’Covan.

Anderson has two fouls. 13-11 OSU

Bradley being easily guarded by Page

by ransomstoddard on Feb 24, 2010 8:10 PM CST reply actions

Barnes puts Hamilton on Gulley. LMFAO, smart move though.

by Trips Right on Feb 24, 2010 8:13 PM CST reply actions

Brown had two bad turnovers. I would have taken him out as well. To say he is sloppy with the ball is an understatement.

by Art Vandelay on Feb 24, 2010 8:13 PM CST reply actions

“My seven year old keeps short pouring my Aberlour. I should have started earlier to endure this.”

In CA. it’s legal to leave your newborn at the fire station, no questions asked. Not sure what the rule is with seven year olds in Texas.

by magnusbleuveigner on Feb 24, 2010 8:13 PM CST reply actions

For all those who insisted, and may still insist, that Hamilton is NBA material: what about the fact that he can’t take anyone—anyone—off the dribble?

by ransomstoddard on Feb 24, 2010 8:15 PM CST reply actions

DJ came to play. He may hurt someone tonight.

by Savage Henry on Feb 24, 2010 8:16 PM CST reply actions

everytime I see Jai out there, I think “oh, that’s cute, look at him out there, playing with the big kids”

Jai sucks.

nice airball.

What was Mason doing on that possession?

by Art Vandelay on Feb 24, 2010 8:28 PM CST reply actions

As entertaining as this is, I’d just like to point out that Durant and the Thunder are on FSSW. It’s nice to see someone who can actually make free throws.

I’m really enjoying JH tonight.

We miss more layups than any team I can remember.

Mason’s unlucky. So are the rest of us.

by Wyatt on Feb 24, 2010 8:40 PM CST reply actions

I miss Sonny Alvarado.

by Savage Henry on Feb 24, 2010 8:41 PM CST reply actions

I am liking the development or whachamacallit of Jordan Hamilton. DJ is simply having a superman half. Hope he can continue it for the full game.

As far as the rest of the freshmen, AB is once again a valuable contributor. The others appear to be trying to step up. I hope they can do it.

We need this game.

I’m not watching game, but I’m getting a vibe from the universe that J’Covan is teetering on a blowup. Considering everything he had to go through to get here that would be tragic.

Hamilton won’t be playing for the Longhorns next season…he is auditioning as we speak. He won’t be a high pick, but he’s tired of playing for Barnes.

Jai is cute.

We’re really going to miss Damion next season.

I am, however, wearing my #11 TJ Ford jersey, so I’ve got that going for myself.

by nordberg on Feb 24, 2010 9:57 PM CST reply actions

Big difference when the refs don’t call 3-4 bullshit calls on Dex.

Mavs & Lakers in a good one on ESPN.

by Art Vandelay on Feb 24, 2010 10:04 PM CST reply actions

Brown was 0-6 from the floor, with 2 points and 2 turnovers. PG by committee, I guess.

by nordberg on Feb 24, 2010 10:07 PM CST reply actions

Awesome game by Dex, 16 points on only 5 shots. TV guys said that Todd Wright has been focusing on improving his conditioning for the last couple of weeks. Dex looked quicker and more explosive. UT just has to figure out how to make an entry pass (hint: let Jordan do it). Great D by the horns, Jordan has really improved his D. He had 3 steals tonight. Dex really has great shot block timing, he had 3 blocks tonight.

Twofer: when Barnes gets mad, he should vent his spleen on the refs, thereby reducing amount of crap his players endure and getting better calls.

I’d like to see Jordan penetrate more. For some reason his ft shooting has gone to crap, usually too strong.

by kafka on Feb 24, 2010 10:18 PM CST reply actions

Brown had a rough night. His shooting form looks like Barnes has been addressing him as “bitch” the last few weeks of practice. No confidence shooting and no focus at the line.

Hamilton was solid. Needs to learn how to dribble left-handed and shoot free throws with the assumption that the points are worth the same as jacking up an ill-advised shot from the floor.

Johnson and James did their typical warrior tandem act.

Pittman finally looked like he wanted to participate in a division 1 game for the first time this decade. Good on ’em, because we need him in the tourney.

Mason…blah. Wangmene…blah. Lucas…blahhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Bradley was his usual deferent, sharpshooter self on offense. He is a panther on defense. Not sure why he gets called for getting an arm bar in the sternum or hip checked on a screen, but it’s the Big 12 so my expectations are tempered.

by Blake Borron on Feb 24, 2010 10:23 PM CST reply actions

Oh, and forgot to give a shout out to Jordan for probably the best and hardest working defensive game he’s ever played!

by Blake Borron on Feb 24, 2010 10:27 PM CST reply actions

“Brown was 0-6 from the floor, with 2 points and 2 turnovers. PG by committee, I guess.”

The PG crew (I’m counting JCB, Lucas and Mason here) as a whole was 0-12, 0-5 from 3, 3-6 from the line, 5 RBs, 5 assists, 3 TOs.

Slightly better if you fold in a little AB in there, but still.

by CrazyJoeDavola66 on Feb 24, 2010 10:32 PM CST reply actions

The was some suffocating D. I didn’t catch the first half, but the effort on D by Bradley, Mason, James, Johnson, and Pittman was phenomenal. Mason also had a beautiful drive kick to the corner for the open 3 by Bradley at the 9 minute mark. We need more of that. I was pleased with his play. At least compared to what I read with Brown.

Guys, Hamilton needs a lot of work. He takes bad shots, doesn’t get back on D and his effort looks questionable. Case in point, his long 3 in the last 4 minutes that started a mini run for Okie State. That’s not to say he can’t shoot, but shooting without playing within the team concept is deadly to the team.

We saw the nucleus of this team in the second half for the rest of the season. Great effort by the team tonight.

by Groundhog Day on Feb 24, 2010 10:35 PM CST reply actions

Oh, also: Had to love Ron Franklin pumpin’ the sunshine for Barnes at the end, as well as his on-the-spot, hard-hitting journalism saying DeLoss told him personally that Texas was not leaving the Big 12.

by CrazyJoeDavola66 on Feb 24, 2010 10:35 PM CST reply actions

Blake, Mason did a pretty damn solid job on Anderson. He’s probably the only dude on our squad up for that challenge.

by Trips Right on Feb 24, 2010 10:36 PM CST reply actions

Good point Trips, he deserves credit for that for sure.

by Blake Borron on Feb 24, 2010 10:43 PM CST reply actions

Jordan was the 3rd leading scorer tonight with 13 points on 4 of 8 shooting. There were only 2 horns who shot a higher % tonight. His D has improved a bunch, he had 3 steals tonight. He also had a couple of assists. When the horns are pressed, Jordan is the best choice to handle the ball. For example, OSU tried to trap Jordan with a double team in the second half and Jordan just towered over them and made an easy pass to an open man.

by kafka on Feb 24, 2010 10:52 PM CST reply actions

Kafka,

I didn’t say he played poorly only that he needs a lot of work. It’s the little things that win games and he will improve. Yes, his d looked better tonight, but two plays stuck out to me in the last 5 minutes. His long 3 at the top of key that resulted in a transition basket and his lack of effort in securing the ball when James took an ill advised 3 with 2 and half to play. With that being said, he still needs to learn better shot selection. Let’s say he is a work in progress.

This team is going to have a tough time winning in the tourney because of its free throw shooting. Teams who have problems shooting them in the regular season usually pay for it at some point in the tourney. Trips knows what I’m talking about. Case in point, the Cuse teams with Sherman Douglas, Stephen Thompson, and Derrick Coleman. Some of the worst free three shooting teams I’ve ever seen.

by Groundhog Day on Feb 24, 2010 11:00 PM CST reply actions

GD, you’re right, bro. Gotta get the easy ones against good teams.

by Trips Right on Feb 24, 2010 11:08 PM CST reply actions

IIRC, those Ewing-era Georgetown teams were pretty solid bricklayers at the line (as were the Mourning/Mutombo teams, I think).

Phi Slamma Jamma probably has a few free-throw regrets.

by CrazyJoeDavola66 on Feb 24, 2010 11:30 PM CST reply actions

The last 3 I saw Jordan take in the last 7 minutes of the game was a good look with about 11 seconds on the shot clock. I don’t blame him at all for the shot or missing the shot even though OSU took the rebound and scored immediately. Anderson made a nice play. Later Damion took a worse 3 with 20 seconds on the shot clock that did not turn into a run out only because Jordan contested the rebound enough to buy time for the horns to get back.

My take is that Jordan had a good game, has improved a bunch recently, and should be playing 30 minutes per game. There is nobody on that team who does not have areas where he could improve, including Barnes. I don’t get singling Jordan out for needing lots of work after he plays well. It kind of reminds me of Barnes’ relentless carping.

by kafka on Feb 24, 2010 11:45 PM CST reply actions

How right you are CJD. I spent many a sleepless night watching the hoyas from that era.

Did Phi Slamma Jamma do anything fundamentally sound besides master the highest percentage shot in the game of basketball?

Anders, Micheaux, Young, Drexler make all of Hamilton’s shots look like good shots.

by Groundhog Day on Feb 24, 2010 11:47 PM CST reply actions

GHD

OK, it was a quarter of a century ago (Jesus…), but here’s what I recall

Micheaux was an early version of James Thomas. Rebounds and easy buckets. I always liked him.

Drexler had an OK shot and was a magnificent transition player. Much more than a dunker.

Young could get really streaky but he had a weird side-rotation on his shots that invariably led to cold spots against teams that could guard him. That ’84 final against GU, he hit like 6 straight shots to start the game to give UH fans a false sense of hope.

Anders was a total junk-ball player. Should have spelled his name An_ers.

I seem to recall that their best free throw shooter – Reid Gettys – actually jumped on his FT shots. Like, his feet actually came a half-inch or so off the floor.

Olajuwon was great, but no one had any idea of what he’d become with the Rockets – Scipio missed him as one of those guys who changed the entire game.

He also had a really short temper – got into his fair share of scraps. He laid out Olden Polynice once with an elbow straight to the throat when they were coming down the court.

I also recall that that team pissed off all the old-school television commentators. Packer hated them.

So, in answer to your question: No. They didn’t.

by CrazyJoeDavola66 on Feb 25, 2010 1:22 AM CST reply actions

cutting down the bench last night helped as did dex getting a few calls to go his way. that’s a 20 point win if we can hit free throws. even when we were number one i said we would have a hard time getting past the sweet 16 because of free throw trouble. i now see us going out in the second round, depending on the matchup we get.

when everyone else seems to be playing a good game (for them) except jcb is it really fair to blame rick. i’ve watched the kid all year and if i were coaching him i would probably be fed up by now too. jordan seems to be getting it (whether he agrees or not) but brown is still fighting what barnes wants him to do. my 2 pennies.

by Savage Henry on Feb 25, 2010 8:45 AM CST reply actions

Hamilton took one bad shot in 25 minutes. He handles and passes better than anyone on the team. Today he showed more effort on d and even helped off the ball on Anderson twice that prevented scores. That is MAJOR progress for him. I have been saying for a while that his on ball d isn’t that bad, and it isn’t, and it is getting better. Knocking the kid with the way he has played the last 5 games seems odd at best.

He was the only one that didn’t have trouble with the OSU trap. Not sure why Barnes decided to let Mason and Bradley try and handle it, but it wasn’t pretty. Hamilton has probably been our 2nd best player over the last 4-5 games and he is still just scratching the surface. Hopefully, he and Barnes can see the light and work things out. It would benefit both of them.

by Bartoncreek on Feb 25, 2010 9:09 AM CST reply actions

One of my favorite things about Hamilton’s game is how when people want to trap him he looks like, “Seriously ya’ll? Give me a freakin’ break” and leisurely dribbles away from it or just throws the ball over their heads. Stark contrast to Bradley and Mason, who look utterly terrified and stressed out by the imminent pressure.
