NFL Combine measurements
The NFL combine started yesterday, but they won’t actually begin running and stuff until Saturday. They have started measuring and weighing the participants, and the offensive linemen and tight ends were up first yesterday.
Adam Ulatoski measured 6’5" 300 with 33 ¼" arms, a full three inches shorter than he was listed at Texas. Short arms.
Ciron Black of Tyler Lee and LSU measured 6’4" 327. He’s a right tackle in the pros and possibly even a guard.
Jeff Byers of USC – 6’3" 301. The knock on him has always been his size.
Tech’s Brandon Carter – 6’6" 329. Someone took the combine seriously, but he’s a limited guy athletically.
Brody Eldridge – 6’5" 261. Guys working the combine said he was the best player they ever measured.
Jason Fox of North Crowley and Miami – 6’7" 303. Four year starter who Texas never recruited.
Jermaine Gresham – 6’5" 261 with 34 ¾" arms.
Marshall Newhouse of Richardson Lake Highlands and TCU. 6’4" 319.
Russell Okung of Houston Bush and Oklahoma State. 6’5" 307 with 36" arms.
J.D. Walton of Allen and Baylor. 6’3" 300.
Trent Williams of Longview and OU. 6’5" 315.
Wide receivers, quarterbacks and running backs are measuring this morning.
Sam Bradford 6’4" 236.
Dez Bryant 6’2" 225.
Dezmon Briscoe 6’2" 207.
Colt McCoy 6’1" 216.
Jevan Snead 6’2" 236.
Jordan Shipley 5’11"193.
Tim Tebow 6'2 3/4" 236.
Get to dissecting.

Shipley is really only 5’11"? He plays a hell of a lot bigger than that.

The thing I have been most looking forward to in this year’s combine is Shipley’s 40 time.

I’m surprised at the QB results. Who would’ve guessed that Sam Bradford is the tallest of those listed, and tied for heaviest? He seems to be much smaller on TV than, say, Tebow.
by R.C. on Feb 26, 2010 8:58 AM CST reply actions
I’m actually shocked that Shipley measured that tall.

Where did you find these? I can’t find a link to a measurements page on the nfl.com website.

Yesterdays measurements are from www.nfl.com/combine/players
Today’s are from following MoveTheSticks on Twitter. Vasherized is apparently following DickExtension on Twitter.

Tebow is awesome. Best college football athlete/QB/leader ever. He’ll win 4 super bowls.

I thought Shipley was closer to 5’9". On the field, next to lineman for example, he looked like a dwarf. 6’1" 215 sounds about right for Colt. Small for a QB. That being said, he’s getting some subtle help from the Drew Brees phenomena. Accuracy and pocket movement (different from scrambling ability) can be really effective in the NFL.
Also, Exhibit A for why he shouldn’t have been running a down-line option against a big, physical defense.
by ghostofagroundgame on Feb 26, 2010 9:23 AM CST reply actions
Thanks.
McCoy shouldn’t have been running the speed option because he doesn’t know how to run the speed option.
by GhostofBigRoy on Feb 26, 2010 9:25 AM CST reply actions
Yeah, that too.
I need to let it go.
by ghostofagroundgame on Feb 26, 2010 9:25 AM CST reply actions
Colt is shorter than expected, I was expecting more in the 6’2 range.
by Holyfrijolies on Feb 26, 2010 9:37 AM CST reply actions
Yeah I was hoping for Colt to be a little taller, but atleast ‘Ship didn’t get “Quan’d”.
Bradford at 236? He’s been eating more than his share of cornmeal. He might need to get in the sweat lodge.
I’m on the record with my aggie friends as saying ’Ship runs 4.4.

I don’t think 33.25" is considered short for arm length.

Another interesting set of measurements that I found surprising:
Sam Bradford: 9 1/2-inch hand span
Jimmy Clausen: 9-inch hand span
Colt McCoy: 9 3/8-inch hand span
Tim Tebow: 10 1/8-inch hand span
Colt’s hands are bigger than Clausen’s and basically the same size as Bradford’s. The Tebow however is sporting a pair of sasquatch hands. You know what they say about fundamentalist Christian virgins with big hands right?

CTJ bet me that Colt would measure 5’9" at the combine.
by HenryJames on Feb 26, 2010 9:53 AM CST reply actions
MoveTheSticks had this to say about OT arm length:
“Not more than a handful of starting OT’s with under 33 inch arms… Love for your DE’s to have long arms for the same reason”
by whoopspat on Feb 26, 2010 9:54 AM CST reply actions
Why can’t we list the guys at their real height/weight? I don’t get it. They are going to get measured anyway, why lie? Don’t know why, but it really irritates me. Do we not have a tape measure or do we just eyeball them and guess? Damn, Ulatoski is tall compared to Ben Alexander, must be 6’8".
by Bartoncreek on Feb 26, 2010 9:58 AM CST reply actions
Bartoncreek,
I’ve often wondered the same thing. Every school does it. I always subtract a couple inches and a few pounds from every player. I guess they think the opposition will look at the media guide and quake in their boots or something.
I tried this tactic of inflating my “measurables” once. She was left similarly horribly dissapointed surprised.

Ulatoski reported for duty at 6 foot 8 and remained at that height until 2008 when he shrank to 6 foot 6. The NFL Pecker Mearsuring Brigade now has Adam at an even 6 foot 5. (These guys don’t let you measure from taint to tip either).
The only possible explanation: Adam Ulatoski = Benjamin Button.

That he’s destined to be a finger-banging not-so-tight end?

Colt’s height is going to hurt him. I think most of us knew he wasn’t 6’3" or 6’2.5" he was listed at but size and durability are big knocks on him. 215 is pretty good and he’s worked hard to get there. He’ll need a very good pro day throwing the ball considering he’s not throwing at the combine. He’s momentum has been trending down. Hopefully he can pimp in a month. He’s looking like a low 3rd to 4th right now….
Shipley’s a slot WR in the NFL so his height is fine. His 20 and 40 yard as well as his broad and vertical will be driving his draft status….

Sam Bradford sure doesn’t look 6’4" 236.
by Steve Nebraska on Feb 26, 2010 10:33 AM CST reply actions
If Dez Bryant can run a sub 4.5 like some are expecting, he’ll be considered a better prospect then Crabtree last year….6’2" 225 lbs is Andre Johnsonish…..

Yeah Bradford does not look 6’4" at all. I thought he was closer to 6’2".

I heard Chaisson put the screws to Bradford to stretch him out.

Does Tebow have the size to play FB in the NFL?
by thebeeve on Feb 26, 2010 3:27 PM CST reply actions
Y of course, of course. Tebow IS the NFL much like Peyton, Eli, Brady Quinn, Tom Brady, Donovan, etc. He’ll be alright. Now if only he would stop writing biblical passages under his eyes.

They think Brody Eldridge is a better player than Peyton Manning? Wow. Guess Brody will go #1 for sure then.

Jevan Snead is the same weight as Tebow and 3/4" shorter.

Homesick,
Snead was 17 lbs lighter than Tebow according to NFL.com

Colt shouldn’t have been running the speed option because we don’t know how to design it or block it.

You pretty much should always subtract an inch or two from college rosters. They always inflate. The NFL measures accurately. I don’t understand why colleges do this. They pretty much all do it, so it isn’t like they can realistically think that doing that will do anything to the other team.
If you met Peyton Manning or one of the truly 6’4" to 6’5" NFL athletes, most people would be surprised at how tall they really are. So many people today inflate their heights that is is almost ridiculous.
