Combine...Tuesday!

DBs running today. Earl Thomas is running in the second group.

Perrish Cox just ran a 4.53. Dedfischer will be crushed.

Dominique Franks - 4.52. Ouch.

Joe Haden - 4.57. Dude.

Brian Jackson - 4.58.

Very slow times thus far.

Atleast Perrish benched 12 reps and described the interviewers as “harassing” him.

Pathetic showing.

Maybe Colt can play DB in the NFL.

Gerald McCoy was asked by Mayock who the best offensive lineman was that he went up against and he responded, “Charlie Tanner.”

No wonder he appeared so damn good.

OSU’s Lucien Antoine – 4.65 and 4.6

Javier Arenas – Hurt his hamstring on his first attempt (I think).

Larry Asante – 4.69 and 4.63

Eric Berry – 4.46 and 4.4. Great times.

by HenryJames on Mar 2, 2010 8:34 AM CST reply actions

Eric Berry = the best player in this draft.

What seperates him from Earl in your mind?

by magnusbleuveigner on Mar 2, 2010 8:44 AM CST reply actions

2nd attempts

Cox – 4.57

Franks – 4.57

Haden – 4.6. Ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha!

Jackson – 4.63

HJ putting some bad karma on ET’s 40’s.

Haden might fall like Malcolm Jenkins. OSU fan thought he was 4.4 too.

What Separates Earl from Berry? Lbs and Inches.

by SydneyCarton on Mar 2, 2010 9:06 AM CST reply actions

Berry looked pretty fluid on the back pedal and turn drill as well. Hey, maybe the Redskins will draft him instead of a quarterback, or defensive tackle. Just as long as they don’t take offensive lineman. Because that would make no sense.

I’m pretty interested to find out how Earl runs. Sounds like a slow track, which makes Berry’s results all the more impressive,

by ghostofagroundgame on Mar 2, 2010 9:49 AM CST reply actions

Berry himself declared to the scouts he’s the best player in the draft. I’m not sure he’s wrong but that’s typically not something you tell them.

Suh’s combine numbers have backed up his play on the field as the best overall player. The Rams would be idiots to draft McCoy with the first pick over the Nigerian QB tosser.

by Vasherized on Mar 2, 2010 9:55 AM CST reply actions

Haden almost fell over on the backpedal/sprint drill. Not having a great day.

by SydneyCarton on Mar 2, 2010 10:02 AM CST reply actions

I watched Suh run the 40 on Sportscenter this morning and couldn’t believe how smooth he runs for a D-tackle. He really is a phenomenal athlete.

by ghostofagroundgame on Mar 2, 2010 10:10 AM CST reply actions

Charlie tanner had the highest bench on the team. I think he got too much criticism

by austin 420 on Mar 2, 2010 10:18 AM CST reply actions

Okay, Berry with a 10’10" broad jump is ridiculous….

by Patrick Bateman on Mar 2, 2010 10:26 AM CST reply actions

I don’t think it’s a slow track. They’ve had some pretty solid times. Not everyone is going to run a 4.4. 4.5 is good for a corner – I think that’s about what Aaron Ross ran and he was a first rounder. 4.6 is not good, but it won’t put you out of the league. Hell, there are some UFAs that are probably in the 4.7 range but play fine in coverage as long as they have safety help deep.

by Sugarpants on Mar 2, 2010 10:29 AM CST reply actions

Wow, no shit? What did Berry measure out to?

My boy Emmanuel Sanders (Bellville represent) had a 10’6" to lead the wr’s.

by magnusbleuveigner on Mar 2, 2010 10:29 AM CST reply actions

Javier Arenas with a 4.52 is going to help him. He was considered quick but not fast. Of course, Shipley ran by him…..He pulled a hammy.

Brian Jackson from OU ran a 4.58. No wonder Colt had no problem taking his legs out! They were moving in slow motion.

Haden and Cox really hurt themselves with their times…

by Patrick Bateman on Mar 2, 2010 10:31 AM CST reply actions

Aaron Ross ran a 4.44 at the combine I believe…

by Patrick Bateman on Mar 2, 2010 10:32 AM CST reply actions

The real difference between Berry and Earl is that Berry can (and probably will) play Cornerback in the NFL. He can also play either Strong or Free Safety. Earl is pretty much strictly a Free Safety.

by hodad on Mar 2, 2010 10:33 AM CST reply actions

Shit, combine is streaming at work. I’m going to get fired.

by scottyc5 on Mar 2, 2010 10:34 AM CST reply actions

Taylor Mays had a 41" vertical and just ran a 4.24.

Too bad he’s not a football player.

Holy sheet. Mays with an unofficial 4.24.

by damn on Mar 2, 2010 10:37 AM CST reply actions

by HenryJames on Mar 2, 2010 10:38 AM CST reply actions

Did dude really run a 4.24? Christ. there are som fast guys this year.

“The real difference between Berry and Earl is that Berry can (and probably will) play Cornerback in the NFL. He can also play either Strong or Free Safety. Earl is pretty much strictly a Free Safety.”

Where did you get that? Some teams have Thomas as high as the 2nd CB on their board according to the MoveTheSticks guy.

The difference between the two is run support. Berry is better there, so a team wanting a complete safety will take him first. A team like the Texans that need a playmaker who can cover might opt for Thomas first. And, still, it’s not like Thomas is a bad run support player.

by ChrisApplewhite on Mar 2, 2010 10:39 AM CST reply actions

HOLY SHITBALLS! 4.24 by a 6’3" 230lbs safety!

by t1climb1 on Mar 2, 2010 10:39 AM CST reply actions

Damn, 4.24 for Mays! Probably unofficial and will be bumped. If that holds, that would make him tied for the fastest player in combine history. He’s phenomenal athlete, maybe he should try the decathlon, because he can’t cover a corpse.

“You may run like Hayes, but you hit like shit….”

Chris Cook is an interesting CB prospect:

6’2, 212 lbs, 32.5 arms. Ran a 4.43 40 and broad jumped 11 feet! He’s weak though. 7 reps in the 40, but that isn’t as important for a CB….

by Patrick Bateman on Mar 2, 2010 10:41 AM CST reply actions

Just move Mays to OLB. Limited coverage problem solved.

by Vasherized on Mar 2, 2010 10:43 AM CST reply actions

4.53 by ET…ouch.

by uthookem on Mar 2, 2010 10:51 AM CST reply actions

Damn, Earl. Needs a sub 4.5….

by Patrick Bateman on Mar 2, 2010 10:52 AM CST reply actions

I don’t think 4.53 merits an ouch. Not stellar but certainly not bad. Let’s see what he does on the second attempt.

by t1climb1 on Mar 2, 2010 10:53 AM CST reply actions

What Chris Applewhite said. Thomas can play corner or nickel.

by Sugarpants on Mar 2, 2010 10:53 AM CST reply actions

The Taylor Mays stuff is just bizarre. He’s constantly lauded for being Adonnis, but he plays like he’s wearing training wheels. He occasionally makes a highlight reel tackle, but there’s not much else there. I wonder what a move to OLB would do for him. He doesn’t appear to have much in the way of instincts and he’s never been considered some type of blitz master. I’d like to see the experiment, in any event.

by CloseToJumping on Mar 2, 2010 10:54 AM CST reply actions

Re Thomas’ 4.53 time, his instincts probably make him play a tenth of a second faster. Dude seriously has some of the best instincts I’ve ever seen. Damn we are gonna miss him this year.

by t1climb1 on Mar 2, 2010 10:56 AM CST reply actions

Mays …. 4.24 unofficial

by VirginiaLonghorn on Mar 2, 2010 10:58 AM CST reply actions

I expected him to be sub 4.5. That’s a little disappointing.

by ghostofagroundgame on Mar 2, 2010 10:59 AM CST reply actions

Has Oakland traded their entire draft to the Rams for the chance to draft Mays yet?

C’mon Earl! One thing to keep in mind is Earl has to be bigger than what he had been playing at. I think he’s atleast 10 pounds heavier.

by magnusbleuveigner on Mar 2, 2010 10:59 AM CST reply actions

T1,

I think we all agree and know ET is badass. 4.53 is not a bad time, but he may have been able to jump Haden as 2nd best DB with a good mid 4.4 time. Ultimately, they play different positions (although it was thought that Earl could play a little CB) so it may not matter. Berry is blowing stuff up right now. Earl measured big for him, so he’s still doing well.

by Patrick Bateman on Mar 2, 2010 11:00 AM CST reply actions

A 4.53 by Thomas is a fine time. That’s right in the middle. He came in bigger than expected and he’s lauded for his instinct and playmaking skills. Compared to all of the other noise out there, he’s basically meeting expectations, which means middle to late 1st. Good for him.

The guy who probably lost about $5-10 million this morning is Joe Haden. He was a top 7 guy and just ran a 4.6 while falling over himself in drills. Calling him the 1st CB off the board is tough now.

by CloseToJumping on Mar 2, 2010 11:01 AM CST reply actions

Mr Bateman,

See CTJ’s comments on Haden. I think he hurt himself big time today. I can’t see how Earl doesn’t jump over him if he wasn’t there already. He’s probably still the 2nd safety on most people’s boards and no worse than the 3rd best safety. the only reason he might be the 3rd safety now is not so much that he ran a 4.53, but that Mays ran a 4.24.

Al Davis just felt a tingle below the waist he hasn’t felt in years.

by t1climb1 on Mar 2, 2010 11:06 AM CST reply actions

The DB from Rutgers, McCourty, is impressive. 5’11 192, two 4.35 40’s and 7 career blocked kicks.

Does Ross run with his eyes closed?

by texastough on Mar 2, 2010 11:11 AM CST reply actions

I agree that Haden hurt himself today. I have a feeling he’ll run again at UF’s pro-day and run much better. I think ET’s the 2nd best safety, but someone might fall in love with workout warrior, Mays. ET, depending on the team drafted to and his speed, may have started out as a CB, a la Griffin or Lott, and then move over to FS. I wonder how 4.53 will impact that versatility. I think it’s fine.

Chad Jones is probably hurting himself a bit. 4.57 for 221 lbs is okay, but 9 reps on the bench….

Nice. ET performs best when money’s on the line. Bigtime. God, we’re going to miss him. I’ll be just as sad when Aaron (AJ) leaves after next year. I think he’s going to continue the tradition of 1st round DBs. Lockdown CB next year…

by Patrick Bateman on Mar 2, 2010 11:26 AM CST reply actions

I think the Texans had an outside chance at him before that last forty, now, not at all. Hopefully the 49ers take him and Sailor and Scip can take him under his wing. If anyone can help an East Texan get acclimated to the cosmopolitan SF it’s those two, having gone through it themselves.

by magnusbleuveigner on Mar 2, 2010 11:27 AM CST reply actions

we’re not offering Diggs?

by ballrific on Mar 2, 2010 11:27 AM CST reply actions

Thomas was already a probable inside 20 pick. I don’t think the 40 changed anything, although it may have solidified things.

In regard to Diggs, if anyone is throwing grades out there as a reason for the non-offer, they’re full of shit and receiving bad information. Grades are fine.

by CloseToJumping on Mar 2, 2010 11:31 AM CST reply actions

I think CTJ is correct. I’ve seen Earl everywhere from 12-20. His weight and this past 40 solidified the thinking of him as a top 20 talent. Where he goes in that top 20 may be influenced by that last 40 as long as it holds and if he interviewed well and performs as well in the drills as we hope.

by Patrick Bateman on Mar 2, 2010 11:37 AM CST reply actions

The official times might end up being much different than the official times. The unofficial on CJ Spiller was something like a 4.28, and his official time ended up being in the 4.3’s. Maybe Taylor Mays ends up with a similar drop.

As for Scipio adjusting to San Francisco, that’s a joke. Rumor amongst the movers and shakers of the Barking Carnival roster indicate that while on campus, Scipio was often seen in class sporting a mauve silk smoking jacket and a tortoise shell cigarette holder cradling a daisy or tulip. I’d say he didn’t have to adjust much.

by SydneyCarton on Mar 2, 2010 11:39 AM CST reply actions

I’m willing to bet Diggs gets an offer in due time. A little patience is in order.

by bighornfan32 on Mar 2, 2010 11:40 AM CST reply actions

by CloseToJumping on Mar 2, 2010 11:43 AM CST reply actions

Taylor Mays official time was 4.43. Lets hope earl’s discrepancy wasn’t that large.

by SydneyCarton on Mar 2, 2010 11:48 AM CST reply actions

That’s not surprising about Mays. That would have put him with Chris Johnson. Still a very good time though….

by Patrick Bateman on Mar 2, 2010 11:49 AM CST reply actions

From that NFL scout on Twitter:

“At the Safety position, I’d rather have 4.55 with instincts than 4.30 without instincts. Good eyes more than makeup the difference in speed”

by whoopspat on Mar 2, 2010 11:52 AM CST reply actions

Mays’ first run did not look anywhere near that fast. It makes sense now that we know it wasn’t.

by kevwun on Mar 2, 2010 11:53 AM CST reply actions

From a fantasy site….Mayock quote is great….

Texas S Earl Thomas ran unofficial forty times of 4.53 and 4.44 Tuesday at the NFL Combine.
The second run is a very good time. Thomas didn’t sniff Taylor Mays’ straight-line speed, but he plays with more range than the USC safety. NFL Network’s Mike Mayock called Thomas the most instinctive safety to come into the league in 10 years. He remains a good bet to go in the top 15 picks of the draft.

by Patrick Bateman on Mar 2, 2010 11:54 AM CST reply actions

I agree, something is playing out behind the scenes, and I don’t think it has anything to do with Diggs. Certainly talent isn’t an issue. Along with the ‘Bama offer he’s got LSU, OU, and quite a few other good schools in the fold. USC is said to be showing interest.

In the end, I think he ends up a ‘horn, I’m just tired of the chicanery.

my guess is that mack told diggs he has an offer but he didn’t want to make it public to keep the other DB’s we are looking at from getting butt hurt. it is easy to just say no DB got an offer at the second junior day. the comments from diggs after the junior day did not strike me as someone who had just gotten snubbed in any way.

As a Canadian, emphatically YES.

by fitzhume on Mar 2, 2010 2:44 PM CST reply actions

There are only two plausible rationales for not offering Diggs:

1. More time to evaluate in-state and OOS guys given our limited ships remaining to give, knowing that if we eventually offer, the legacy ties will come through for us.
2. Muschamp wanting more size in the secondary. He’s mentioned it in a few booster speeches in the offseason.

Everything else checks out: grades, character, talent, production in high school, wants to be on the 40 acres … he’s a take any and every year.

Just because we’ve moved up the timetable on recruiting doesn’t mean we should freak out over not offering a kid in February with 12 months to go until signing day. But hopefully we learned something from the Mike Davis recruitment last year. Luckily that turned our way but not all of them will.

Kids are starting to take which junior day you invite them to more seriously than the invite itself. As Diggs’ offers from BCS Top 10 schools pile up, Texas better not stop recruiting the kid just because he visited and we didn’t offer.

As for recruiting, given Mack Brown’s approach, I think it’s necessary and appropriate that every recruiting season we get to pick one guy to grouse about offering (Doyle or Moss this year – I think most are settling on Doyle) and one guy to freak out over not offering (Diggs this year).

magnus -

I will say that living all over the states for a few years has taught me why Americans make fun of the way we talk. Not to say that there aren’t some moronic-sounding dialects in this country, but every time I hear an Air Canada pilot say “welcome te-de flight, eh?” or a hockey announcer say “and he shoots the puck oot of the zone” it makes me laugh.

And I honestly considered Milbarge, but Chevy Chase has by far the better character in that movie.

Now, what were we talking about again? Oh yeah, I can run a 4.39 40 if I time myself mentally. That number drops a bit when someone else does it, though. Doc Saturday dredged up that picture of Florida’s “best performers” board, made me laugh since Haden is quite high on it.

by fitzhume on Mar 2, 2010 4:04 PM CST reply actions

I don’t see how Americans chanting “USA” is the equivalent of a Tennessee fan chanting “SEC.”

Maybe if we were chanting “NAFTA” or “NATO” that would make sense but not “USA.” I have no problem with Tennessee fans singing Rocky Top after a big win. Yeah. it’s annoying but I am sure so is Texas Fight. What’s stupid about chanting “SEC” is that they are bragging about their affiliation with 11 other teams who want to beat them. It’s even stupider listening to some dude chant “SEC” during a conference game just because someone makes a great play – pathetic.

So…. he’s an obvious take, but Muschamp wants to hold out for Turner and those guys before offering? Is that pretty much the deal?

I think he’s a super secret commit that only Ketchum knows about. In fact, he loves UT so much he’s going to string along the percieved competition, the ‘Bamas, LSU’s, and OU’s long enough to occupy their resources, and let us move in on the Turner’s and Rasco’s of the world. Ssshhhhh.

I don’t know the point of holding out. You put the athlete tag on Diggs and no position players should fear him. Surely not the top corners in the nation. My choice for “position advocate” would be sizzle. He seems to know what positions to put the talent in.

Nobody knows what the hell is going on with Diggs’ recruitment – except Ketchum of course. You can find out the $information you are looking for, in meticulously generalized hypothetical speculation, at OB.
