2010 Academic All Big 12 Basketball Team
Congratulations to the five Longhorns basketball players that made the Academic All Big 12 team. This is the second straight year we've led the conference in academic honors after placing six guys on last year's squad.
Mind you, our 2008 squad had a 3.29 team GPA.
I don't think the ZBT intramural team had that.
Senior Associate AD/Student-Athlete Services
Dr. Randa Ryan is without peer in the business, but she can't get it done unless you have a man at the top of the program who gives more than lip service to academics.
From the USA Today article in 2008:
At the beginning of the 2007-08 school year, Texas coach Rick Barnes met with point guard D.J. Augustin. "What's your goals for next year?" Barnes recalled last weekend asking Augustin. "He immediately started talking about our team. I said, 'I'm talking about you personally.' He said, 'I'd like to be an Academic All-American.' "

great news for the players and agree that the importance starts at the top. i love that durant comes back to finish off his education as well as playing ball with the guys. what’s the graduation rate for the basketball team?

Dunno. Obviously, a lot of these guys leave credit hours on the table if they go pro early or even head over to Europe instead of finishing in the summer sessions.
I think the takeaway is that Barnes and Randa Ryan are doing a hell of a job preparing these guys for life and that Barnes makes these guys embrace the college experience.
