Crap, the Huskies are about to dump Marquette. How bad is my bracket-fu?

3 minutes, 4 total points. Gawd these teams are awful.

Yeah, I thought the BEast was going to wreck shit this year.
My bracket reveals that not to be the case.

i’m guessing they just showed wangmene because a ball bounced off his stone hands into the third row…i didnt get to see the play…cbs was showing the marquette ending
by Fundamentals on Mar 18, 2010 8:58 PM CDT reply actions
now i did see that miss and subsequent foul…
by Fundamentals on Mar 18, 2010 8:58 PM CDT reply actions
It’s gotta be these awful uniforms. Nobody forgets how to play basketball this completely and quickly, it’s the only rational explanation.
by TOR on Mar 18, 2010 8:59 PM CDT reply actions
Wangmene must shoot 10% from within two feet of the basket. Even when it’s relatively uncontested.

Looks like we’ll have to wait till we’re down by 15 points to see Brown.

Hey guys, we made it to the Dance. Mission accomplished.

Words can’t describe how bad Wake is. Miami dropped 85 on these fools and didn’t break a sweat.

Offense please, Rick? Here we go again . . .

We might actually be the worst team in the tournament.

I’m not the slightest bit upset at our miserable sucking. That is so sad.
by spit and tears on Mar 18, 2010 9:04 PM CDT reply actions
Everything we do is individual. We have nothing to fall back on in the way of sets or motion. For that, Barnes should be ashamed of his fucking self.
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2010 9:04 PM CDT reply actions
We are just an awful basketball team. It is like watching paint dry.

What’s so ridiculous is when you have 3 of your players standing around on offense, you’d think they’d at least be able to get back in transition.
by UT_64 on Mar 18, 2010 9:08 PM CDT reply actions
Yikes, we’re getting blown out by a 9 seed
by ransomstoddard on Mar 18, 2010 9:08 PM CDT reply actions
Just like the baseball team. Pitching and defense. Minus the defense.
by cohagenindustries on Mar 18, 2010 9:08 PM CDT reply actions
We’re so bad on offense that it looks like Wake is playing zone. They’re not. In the 36th fucking game of the year. We still stand around waiting for someone to do something against one of the worst defenses in the tournament.
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2010 9:09 PM CDT reply actions
These guys just flat out don’t care. Except for Damo, but he’s not exactly lighting it up.
by sizzlechest on Mar 18, 2010 9:10 PM CDT reply actions
This looks like a bunch of guys with guaranteed salaries who don’t care if they win or lose, as long as they don’t have to work too hard.

Yeah, that’s it. We look like a shitty NBA team. A bunch of standing around, on both offense and defense.
I asked this a couple of weeks ago, and since it hasn’t happened since then… when was our last fast-break bucket? No joke, I can’t even remember.

c’mon, trips. barnes has sucked donkey balls all season, but are you really going to blame the fact that j’covan gave up the ball to johnson (which is something that a PG is taught NOT to do since middle school) on rick? you’re frustrated, but, really? that’s j’covan’s boneheaded play all the way on that one.
by mpayne on Mar 18, 2010 11:27 PM CDT reply actions
With 15 seconds left, out of a dead ball, most coaches would make it perfectly clear who they wanted to be fouled.
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2010 11:28 PM CDT reply actions
mpayne, I’d agree with you if J’Covan had been playing all season and had been in situations to make that decision. Like, you know, against Baylor, when he played all of 3 fucking minutes thanks to rick.
So yes, it is rick’s fault.
by uthookem on Mar 18, 2010 11:29 PM CDT reply actions
mcpayne, yes, you don’t leave that shit to chance. You don’t let your guys break the huddle or dead ball not knowing precisely what’s expected from them. Barnes doesn’t get 2 mil for coaching PE where he’s hoping the right guy gets fouled.
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2010 11:30 PM CDT reply actions
Trips,
Do you know that he didn’t? JCB has made bad decision all season, why would this be any different. Barnes coached a shitastic game, but on the teams I was the best FT shooter, I never game up the ball unless it was an uncontested layup…..It’s not hard and it doesn’t take a lot of thought…
by Patrick Bateman on Mar 18, 2010 11:31 PM CDT reply actions
mpayne,
Barnes’ job is to put us in position to win. J’Covan has been a bit of a bone head all year. So yeah, I expect the coaching making 2 fucking million dollars a year to go ahead and say the god damn words out loud. That is not too much to fucking ask, and you can bet your ass that most coaches would have done the same. Brown is not without fault, but shit starts and stops with the head coach. And ours sucks a cock.

by nordberg on Mar 18, 2010 11:35 PM CDT reply actions
Pat, you know I don’t, but I’ve had coaches draw up plays to free up the best foul shooter and then tell that guy they’d put their foot up his ass if they passed the ball. It’s funny, but as fans of football we nitpick blitz pickup and shit like that. Shit that’s a 100 miles an hour. But a simple dead ball strategy where you tell a guy, hey don’t foul, or don’t leave such and such, or don’t give up the basketball when you get it, is basic shit. If J’Covan blew that, then he’s dumber than I thought. If Barnes failed to make it perfectly clear to Brown, then that’s on Barnes. Again, $2 million, I know who I’m blaming.
by Trips Right on Mar 18, 2010 11:36 PM CDT reply actions
How badly are we coached… if you have DVR go back and watch Johnson’s FTs, check out his stance. He lines up his right toe on the dot(center-circle), which is correct… then his left foot is almost a whole foot length behind, and way less than shoulder width, feet almost side-by-side. Try shooting a foul shot like that. Now if he shot 90% then he can line up pigeon-toed for all I care. But here he is, a 60-65%(below average) FT shooter lining up in a stance that would make a middle school assistant trainer cringe. How any coach at any level can allow that is criminal.

by EggNog on Mar 18, 2010 11:41 PM CDT reply actions
okay, well at least we can agree on that. if barnes didn’t properly remind j’covan brown that he’s a 90% FT shooter and the PG/ball handler on the floor and should, therefore, keep the ball in order to get fouled as opposed to passing it to a 69% FT shooting gary johnson…then, yeah, rick barnes screwed the pooch on that play, too.
otherwise, i’m thinking that one of our players made a dumb play (again).
by mpayne on Mar 18, 2010 11:43 PM CDT reply actions
Trips,
I hear ya. I’m frustrated as well. I guess I just don’t prescribe to such a black and white characterization of the situation. I do know that no matter what happened in the huddle, JCB made a dumb play. If Rick didn’t explain or remind him of the situation, then I can see that being a bad oversight. It doesn’t excuse JCB’s play. 12 year olds know better. I have no problem believing that Barnes spent most of the huddle drawing up a play to get JCB open to get the ball. He probably implied that JCB should get the ball and get fouled. Pretty basic stuff. I guess at worst, it’s all on JCB. At best, they share the blame……It all F’n sucks….

Rebounding: Wake 56, Texas 31. Wake had 19 offensive rebounds. Their 6’0" guard Ishmael Smith gets 12 rebounds and 3 offensive, while James and Johnson combine for 11 and 3.
I just wish James could’ve played like a true 4. It was pissing me off when he was standing around the perimeter and jacking up threes. He ended up 1-7 from beyond the arc.
Hamilton had a good game, but I still felt he was horribly underutilized, especially late. Can’t believe he didn’t end up starting for us given his clear value.
Overall, can’t complain about Brown. Showed a lot of heart and capabilities of leading. Too bad Barnes only decided he should only play basically half the game. The freshmen mistakes Brown made, SHOULD have been made earlier in the season, but instead was rotting on the bench and not developing.
LOL at Bradley critics. Did you forget about the TWO game saving blocks he made in transition?
Pittman is done. What are the chances we ever see him playing basketball on national television ever again? Looks slim to me. The game is just too fast and physical for him to dominate. I thought we were better without him.
As bad as the coaching job was this year, and as bad as the players were at various times, I’m still looking forward to next season. We no longer have to worry about starting an out of shape center who clogs the paint, and we won’t have to worry about offensive liabilities in Mason and Balbay. We’ll have Ward and Shawn Williams back, to go with Thompson and hopefully Joseph. I’ll miss James, but I think him leaving opens up opportunities for all the freshmen to thrive, and that is why I believe all our freshmen would be wise to return for at least one more season. I expect next year to be the complete opposite of this year. We’ll be the team that overachieves and peaks in March, and the Barnes hate will be all but gone.
by UT_64 on Mar 19, 2010 12:00 AM CDT reply actions
As far as Barnes future, he has no chance of getting canned anytime soon, with the tournament streak living on (not that I really care about it). The effects of this season though, leave a permanent scar on Barnes’ resume and even perhaps the Texas Basketball program in general. The lack of development in our freshmen could affect our future recruiting.
But just from a UT fan’s perspective, this was supposed to be the year where our basketball team didn’t take a backseat to football. This was Barnes’ chance to show the UT fanbase that his program is for real and ready to win the BIG games. Instead, this year was a colossal failure that ruins his reputation. The hype and high expectations that came with the start of this season? We may not have this again for awhile.
by UT_64 on Mar 19, 2010 12:08 AM CDT reply actions
Trips, I think Rick Barnes is limited in his coaching abilities (as are most college coaches). I think having a powerhouse program is a result of having good players more than a good system, which I think is different than 20-30 years ago in college hoops. Teams that go on good stretches put more guys in the pros than when they go into lulls.
Barnes being the main problem with our team is a notion I disagree with, I would say its more of a 50/50 thing between coaching and players. Most of the talk on this board has been in the direction of criticizing Barnes with very little recognition of players shortcomings. If the general theme of this season on the board was weighed towards the players struggles, you would see more posts from me discussing Barnes’ failures. I think it is fair to say that most bad move by Barnes has been covered well enough on here, and in some cases likely in excess. A simple “I agree” wouldn’t really add much to the discussion.
Barnes is a known commodity, we know what he can and cannot do. His approach to the game is simple (oddly enough considering this team couldn’t seem to grasp it), defense and rebounding above all else; on offense exploit individual mismatches. His “style”, if you wanna call it that, allows for less talented teams to compete with more talented opponents and at the same time allows NBA ready guys to hone in on the skills they will need to succeed at the next level. He has certainly struggled to manage playing time, build strong units, work players into rhythms; and I think his biggest failure this year was not having patience with these young guys. He doesn’t adapt well to game situations and relies too heavily on his players’ ability to play smart (not a good thing with this team). Maybe watching this porous defense all season long blew a few fuses in his head. I think there are better coaches than him out there, but I doubt ones that we can get AND keep around.
I don’t think Texas Basketball is anywhere near the big names in college hoops. Looking at tournament appearances and runs over the last decade and we are up there with most any other school, which does speak well for Barnes. I think Barnes, or anybody else who would come in in his place would struggle to recruit. Clean recruiting that is… We aren’t a powerhouse and we aren’t really on the radar of elite players year in and year out. UNC, Kansas, Kentucky…schools like that have an entire roster of McD’s All Americans while we are still pulling a few here and there. Texas hoops is still not a big time destination for players, its a football school first and the drum is half empty year round.
Watching this team, I just don’t think this group was that great (certainly after losing Ward and Balbay). While other coaches could have done a better job, I don’t see anyone leading this team to the Final Four (again after injuries). We have won quite a few games over the years that we had no business winning, and we did it with the preparation that Barnes instilled into the kids. That is his strength. This year it clearly didn’t work.

I really can’t believe how many people are blaming J’Covan Brown and Rick Barnes because Gary Johnson missed two fucking free throws when we only needed one.
that was arbuably the biggest choke job in UT basketball that I’ve ever seen. he just fucking blew it…can’t you leave it at that? why does it have to be J’Covan or Rick’s fault?
and fuck his form…who gives a shit? he shot 70% on the year and you’re going to wait til he bricks 2 FT’s when the season is on the line to criticize his form? he choked. that’s why he missed the FT’s and that’s why we lost the game.

a Good System will usually beat a talented team that does not play together and are thinking instead of playing basketball ,over a season the system wins more then they will give away.
A team that is scared to make a mistake and thinks before they react is going to lose to a confident but less talented team with a system. Dont underestimate the fact that having fun is usually good for a team.
We were a fucking good team before Barnes ripped the heart and soul from this team by breaking his players down until we were a shell of a basketball team.
I wish Barnes would wear an burnt orange tie or he could also dress in a Texas sweater ,maybe orange sneakers then the fans could know what side he is on…..

Barnes’ three “strengths”:
Defense, rebounding, recruiting.
This team just proved the first two are non-existent (out-rebounded by 25; fucking KIDDING me?) and the last one is over-hyped as well. Every ESPN basketball recruiting analyst who actually had Bradley ahead of Wall should be taken out back and executed Inglourious Basterds style.
I hate Turgeon and I guess nobody really likes Drew. I’d take either one in a fucking HEARTBEAT over Random Ballscreen Rick.
It’s convoluted and frankly doesn’t make any sense, but this loss hurts more than Bama, by far, to me. It’s up there with I Dreamed it in My Head, KSU 2006 (McCoy stinger game), and Syracuse 2003 hoops.

For those of you ragging on JCB throwing to Gary, remember that J’Covan was called for an offensive charge just a couple minutes prior to that. Obviously, his thought process was not in the right place.
If Barnes didn’t remind him and everyone else who should get the ball at the point, then that’s a major screw up by Barnes.
As I previously mentioned, the thing that will stand out for me about this season was how many bad plays we made over and over. That also includes mind-boggling coaching decisions.
Horrendous boxing out during this game. (Getting doubled up on rebounds??) Damion not diving on the loose ball. Pittman shooting 3 point blank shots and missing all 3, J’Covan missing 2 FTs near the end of regulation, then Gary missing 2 free throws in OT. Not putting in the guy (JH) who actually scores for you?
Since the beginning of “The Slide” as it shall be known henceforth, this team has had so many chances to put other teams away, but failed miserably.

UT needs to decide what it wants in a basketball program and whether Barnes is the man to get UT to that point, whatever it is.
Barnes needs to decide what he wants to achieve in his coaching career in the next 10 to 15 years that career will probably extend. He needs to decide where he wants to be. He needs to decide if he is going to make any changes in the way he coaches or the way he treats his players.
The vast majority of UT fans (the ones who don’t care about basketball very much at all) need to decide whether they are ever going to care about basketball or create a basketball culture at UT.
All three of the above decisions are intertwined.

Tex – actually, JCB missed those 2 free throws in OT with 49s left when we were up 78-74.
Fearless!

GigoloJoe, don’t you remember what the UT program was before Barnes? It was a rec center pickup game that sometimes was good but was never really a national contender.
Hasn’t Barnes taken you to two Final Fours (I think)? He’s a force in national recruiting. He’s made you a top 10 perennial program, even with a disappointing last month this year.
You might file this under “be careful what you wish for.” Barnes has built your program.

North Dallas,
We’ve only been to one Final Four (TJ’s team) and to two other Elite Eights…..Just an FYI…

Getting a little tired of hearing about Tom Penders. Whenever Barnes leaves, how ever that eventually happens, we aren’t bringing Penders back. We’ll go out and find the best, most-qualified coach available and throw money at him. How do I know this? Because that’s how we fucking operate.
As far as be careful what you wish for, given the shitty product Barnes is putting on the court right now, I’ll take my freakin chances, thank you.

For what it’s worth RB said postgame he made it very clear JCB was to take the foul. He gave it up so that’s on him.
The who will replace RB discussion should wait until after next year. Nothing is happening until then at the very, very earliest? That said, FRB!

Savage, I read that too. That’s on Brown.
I’d kill everyone on the thread for Jimmer Freddette. Think about that.

Yes, and no. We’ve all discussed the browbeating that Barnes gives his players. We’ve all noted how they’ve had their confidence beaten out of them.
Hypothetically, what if Barnes showed more confidence and more playing time in JCB over the last 2 months? Would a more confident and experienced JCB taken the ball down court instead of passing?

What is all this stuff about browbeating the players and “breaking them down”? Does Barnes really operate that way? And has he always? I ask honestly. Do his kids sense that he cares about them? Or does he take their joy and confidence away?

GigoloJoe:
He’s like Frank Martin…without the really, really good coaching ability and DC recruiting connection.

Nordie,
Is that you being glib derived out of frustration (lord knows, I can empathize) or do you have actually have some source or evidence beyond the general media sources? Is that just conjecture that you’ve heard or do you know anything credible? Love to hear it if you do…..

Holy shit. Stop with all this fucking “think about the kids” bullshit twat rubbing. Put some fucking responsibility on the shoulders of the kids for just a second.
We were out rebounded approximately 192823 to 31. We had people (James included) standing flat footed staring at the ball as Wake made high-light reel dunks.
We had players just throwing up shots. Brown happened to make his contested 3s early in the shot clock last night. But he’s also had games where he’s not on and he goes 1-8 from 3. Same with Hamilton. Bradley and James were both HORRIBLE shooting last night, but at least James had the excuse that he was getting fouled (he went to the line 4 times). If you are going to take 15 shots and only make 4, you damn well better be driving and getting to the foul line. He probably would have missed his FTs anyway. Bradley and Brown are still the same players offensively: selfish. They keep doing it even though it is obviously not the game plan. It is on them to learn.
We can’t shoot free throws. Most of these guys have been playing basketball for 8-10+ years. It is Barnes’ fault they can’t shoot FTs?
Barnes has his faults and does need to make some changes, but damn it, all this breast beating and tearing of hair for these poor fucking children is getting ridiculous.

Too little protein in one’s diet, on the other hand, can also lead to hair loss since it can make the hair go into a resting phase.

Its such as you read my mind! You seem to grasp so much approximately this, like you wrote the e book in it or something. I feel that you just could do with a few % to force the message house a bit, however instead of that, this is wonderful blog. A fantastic read. I will certainly be back.
