Whaley, Newton and Foz?

Come on. You’re fucking Texas. Poor showing.

No shit.

Why not try Whale at TE or h back? Can/will he block? Can he catch well? It sounded like Whale is behind Cody as the power back.

Whaley has great hands. No idea if he can block. He has no history of it.

Vondrell continues to mystify me. He led the team in YPC for most of last year, but rarely got snaps after the early season. I remember something about blocking, but what exactly that meant never became clear.

by MaduroUTMB on Mar 23, 2010 11:03 PM CDT reply actions

we can’t wait for Marquise Goodwin to get back from track and for Robert Timmons to learn the playbook.

The only playbook Robert Timmons needs to learn is the TX penal code playbook.

Do most UT fans want a more downhill, under center offense? I’m just curious.

Also, at least your OC doesn’t tell you that you have the best OL in history just days before they go out and shit the bed for an entire season.

Is Davis auditioning for a cabinet position? That was the most political sounding bull shit that I’ve ever heard. It basically says “go ahead and elect me even though I don’t have a clue what I’m doing. Hell, we won’t even have CHANGE.” It will be the same old tired crap.

Can we have a separate post simply titled: “Where does Chris Whaley fit?”

In a shipping container?

In the trunk of a 1974 Lincoln Town Car?

Inside Mark Mangino?

by Bateshorn on Mar 24, 2010 7:29 AM CDT reply actions

Malcolm Williams is our best hope for an elite receiver next year. He does it all and with great effort, including blocking downfield better than all others. His size and speed alone separate him from all the JAGs at this time. If he can get his concentration level down where he doesn’t drop 2 or 3 gimmes a game, we’re in bidness.

I ain’t giving up on him yet.

by beowulf on Mar 24, 2010 7:51 AM CDT reply actions

We are going to take the last eight days and really take a hard look at Chris Whaley, Jeremy Hills, Vondrell McGee, and Cody Johnson and try to really have some decisions made as much as we can going into August regarding the backs.

Only 8 days to look at those unknown players: Hills, McGee and Johnson? Slow down there, Greg. Let’s not rush into this .

So Greg compared the leadership of Colt, Jordan, Ulatoski and Hall to Vince Young? Seriously? Wow. I just don’t even know where to begin with that.

The sad thing is that I think he really believes it. He really thinks that we replaced VY’s leadership on offense and there was no dropoff.

All I know is that I’m glad no great leaders walked past Vince as he lay on the field after a cheap shot with their heads held down. Because I fear that those great leaders would no longer be with us and Vince would be serving a long stint in prison. Where he would, no doubt, lead the prisoners to huge victories over the guards every year.

Haha, nice shot at Chip Brown and his new gig.

by NY Horn on Mar 24, 2010 9:04 AM CDT reply actions

Barton —

That’s something that always bothered me about this last regime. I remember so many cheapshots taken against Colt — particularly in college station — but I do not recall ANY retaliation or protection from ANY of our players.

“Sherrod. Dude. Is this seriously how you’re going to go out?”

All this kid does is post inanities on Twitter, and lament that he should’ve been a basketball player. I’m surprised he actually still shows up for practice.

Which, if you substitute ‘coach’ for ‘basketball player’ and ‘work’ for practice, could really apply to any of us on BC. So I guess we’re at an impasse of judgment.

by TXinDC on Mar 24, 2010 10:03 AM CDT reply actions

Sherrod wanted nothing to do with the NC game when Gilbert got dinged up.

Unless we’re just dead-set on redshirting both Wood and McCoy, go ahead and give Wood all of Sherrod’s snaps starting now.

So our I formation will feature Greg Smtih at TE. Which means we’ll only have 2 receiving threats any any given time. And when we still can’t run the ball against a 7 man front, we’ll be throwing into 2 deep double coverage on both of them.

Yeah I see this working out great.

Either you agree that offensive line play was a lowlight & the Horns managed to win in spite of it, or Suh has also ripped off your limbs and bludgeoned you about the head with them too.

Scipio,

Where do these obscure refereces to Fort Worth Country Day come from? This is the 3rd or 4th time I have seen one. As an SPC alum, they crack me up. Especially the line about Emanuel Acho “playing against future yacht owners” and how he “looks for kids with trust funds to knock unconscious”.

by Pakihorn on Mar 24, 2010 3:01 PM CDT reply actions

He used to pick on St. Stephen’s until I informed him that we dominated the SPC North in the Halcyon days of private school competition (1990-94) and he has rightfully moved on to belittling FWCDS, St. Mark’s (Acho Ocho Uno y Uno Ocho y Kalen Thornton), Cistercian, etc.

by Vasherized on Mar 24, 2010 3:19 PM CDT reply actions

If Whale is behind Cody as the power back, has great hands, excellent speed for a big man, and is huge, why not move him to h back/fb/flex TE/TE? He is bigger than most LBs, so he should be able to block them (with some practise). The sooner he learns how to block, the better. It would be a shame to waste him this season, sitting on the bench behind 4 other TBs. Anybody know how well Whale blocks?

Mathews is being cross trained at TE, so Smith is not necessarily the starting TE next season.

by kafka on Mar 24, 2010 3:39 PM CDT reply actions

Chris Applewhite-

Unless of course Mathews/Smith/Grant/other condemned sole is playing the "H" back role and we go with 3 wide and 1 RB. That gives us the flexibility of lining up in 20 personnel or 11 personnel. If the "H" back is any form of a receiving threat, that could be a very nice personnel package for us, that would allow us significant schematic flexibility.

by Fico on Mar 24, 2010 4:14 PM CDT reply actions

Has anyone noticed how we make silver lining comments on Whaley?

by Mysterious Package on Mar 24, 2010 8:10 PM CDT reply actions

If Whale switches from TB to h back/fb/te/flex te, it isn’t necessarily a silver lining thing. Maybe it is just a reallocation of a very big, fast athlete who can run and catch the ball from a position with a lot of experienced depth (TB) to a position with less depth (h back/etc). It may be that Mathews and Smith catch the ball OK this season but just in case that is not true, it is nice to have a backup plan. Whale would also stretch the field as a receiver with his speed and be an excellent safety valve target who runs well after the catch. He can run over the DBs fast enough to cover him and outrun the LBs who are big enough to tackle him.

If the switch is going to happen eventually, why not sooner rather than later?

by kafka on Mar 24, 2010 11:29 PM CDT reply actions

by scagnetti on Mar 25, 2010 3:47 AM CDT reply actions

I hope we have enough blocking surface synergy to bang one over the goalline in four plays after a first down on our opponents’ three yard line.

by Blueshorn on Mar 25, 2010 11:06 AM CDT reply actions

The practice highlights on mb-tf from 3/25 looked like an awful lot of shotgun to me.

Not breaking any news here but I also noticed that Whaley runs extremely upright. That said he did still manage to truck a few helpless defenders.

“The practice highlights on mb-tf from 3/25 looked like an awful lot of shotgun to me.”

We will still run a ton of shotgun, we will just have an under center game to compliment it now. Much like the offense had in 2006-2007.

by Fico on Mar 26, 2010 8:52 AM CDT reply actions

Take a look at the 3/25 highlights at the 1:30 mark. Whale flat runs over 3 guys and a 4th defender doesn’t want any part of Whale. Whale looked fast and extremely powerful. He runs upright but he is a monster who runs straight at and over defenders.

by kafka on Mar 27, 2010 12:12 AM CDT reply actions

Our lack of a running game—and, apparently, the lack of a plan to develop one—is a great mystery. What is the problem here?
