#20 Cedric Reed - What Do It Mean?
Yawn. Ho hum.
Another elite recruit.
The Texas Longhorns committed Cedric Reed, our 20th recruit. With 10 months to spare.
I hate when Mack Brown leaves things to the last moment. Will Muschamp's domination of heavyweight defensive recruiting since his arrival in Austin has been total. He's sporting a Rocky Marciano record and facing a slate full of tomato cans.
Adding Cedric Reed means that Texas now has the two best DE commitments in the state (Kendall Thompson, Cedric Reed), on the heels of taking the two best DE commitments in the state (arguably the country) in 2009 (Wilson, Jeffcoat), preceded by taking the top DE commitment in 2008 (Alex Okafor). That doesn't even count a number of intriguing projects and studs in their own right like Greg Daniels, Dominic Jones, and Tevin Mims.
The Aggies advanced an argument for Cedric Reed's services based largely on an open depth chart. This is tantamount to trying to sway a girl to not date a charming, rich, handsome guy because he has so many other options besides her, whereas your desperate financial circumstances, tiny feet, multiple pesonality disorders, and cleft palate guarantee fidelity.
Also, playing DE in a 3-4 isn't much fun. Unless you enjoy being double-teamed more than Jenna Jameson. I've likened it to playing in a Witness Protection Program. Particularly if you imagine yourself as an edge rusher.
I love the 3-4, and believe it is underutilized as college defense given it's representation in the NFL and the recruiting advantages it can offer if packaged correctly, but you've got a sell job to make if your defense isn't getting it done on the field and lacks a recent NFL track record for DL placement. Contrast Aggie 3-4 circa 1989 vs. now. The Aggies have to recruit intelligently, develop well, play good schemes, and create a pitch based on on-field achievement. Absent that, it's just talk.
Finally, Aggies whoop and shit. This is disconcerting to most 17 year old males.
Since we have a fanbase that likes to fret when we have excesses of talent at a position as much as when we lack it, position changes, redshirts, injury, and rotating four DEs throughout the game will keep everyone happy.
So what does the Cedric Reed news mean for recruiting more broadly?
First, we should probably forget DT Quincy Russell. When a guy commits and his counselors pull him off, this isn't happening. Too bad. Russell has a big athletic upside. We'll just content ourselves with the top 3 DTs in the state since last year in Bible, Dorsey, Desmond Jackson.
It also means we're going to spend the next year focusing on Oklahoma CB Josh Turner, Cibolo RB Malcolm Brown, and one or two other cherry picks throughout the year. CB Charles Jackson is an intriguing possibility, if he can get his grades up. He'll come into our summer camp and we'll make a call then.
If we closed out the class with Turner, Brown, and one more emerging cornerback (Jackson looks good if we'll take a calculated grade risk; track record says we won't), I'd be happy.
Whether it's Turner, Jackson, or some emerging senior in Itasca, I want to throw numbers at cornerback. We need stars to emerge there - the next Bryant Westbrook. Guys that can play at a high level as freshmen and sophomores. And - unlike OL - when you throw numbers at cornerback, those that don't pan can end up as quality safeties, special teams contributors, kick return studs, or have the decency to transfer outright in search of a better playing situation.
So that's where we stand. Malcolm Brown, some corners, and some random dude who always emerges down the stretch.
Your thoughts?

We’re getting to the point where our walk-ons on the DL would start at most Big 12 teams.

Nice take, one quibble. I have a little feeling we’re not out on Russell and if given time, he’ll come back. He handled it the right way by calling and talking to the coaches. Also, I bet Will and Mack know the dynamic going on (Green’s uncle his HC and trying to sway them to Nebraska) still would take him. That being said, I bet Russell better commit sooner rather than later, because they won’t wait much longer (mid summer) for him to decide.

I hope you’re right.
However, if you look at how it played out, Russell obviously did what he wanted, got negative feedback, and acted on it by decommiting immediately. I’m no expert in human psychology, but that tells you what you needed to know about what sway his coach has over him.
I think we land Russell if there’s a hitch in that relationship. I don’t see any other way.

Boy, ain’t that the truth.

A good Jenna Jameson metaphor never gets old.
What confuses me about the aggies is why they don’t take the 3-4’s inherent need for tweeners and use it more effectively to make a pitch for players. Instead the spend their time getting outsized by us while OSU and Baylor take the guys they should be focusing on.
This site is firing on all cylinders right now. Which means HenryJames reappearance is imminent.

Call me gullible, but I don’t think Russell really wanted to be committed. I think his brain told him to commit (best business decision, near his sick mom in San Antonio, peer pressure, real numbers pressure), but his heart wanted to take his time and experience the recruiting process like the 5-star player he believes he is. Now, does Coach Green believe in schools dictating terms to recruits and early recruiting in general? Clearly not. Did he validate Russell’s buyer’s remorse by counseling him to immediately act on it by decommitting? Clearly yes. But I don’t buy that he talked Russell out of a comfortably made decision. And I also think he (probably inadvertently) did Texas a favor by advising him to decommit now vs. down the road after we’ve burned bridges with other options.
I do believe Cedric Reed effectively wraps up our front seven recruiting and we’ll no longer be recruiting Russell or any other DT. I’m comfortable with that.
Definitely agree that we need numbers at CB. Assuming we get Josh Turner (I do), I’d like to see us take a flier on a guy like Charles Jackson vs. another tackle.

The staff may make Quincy a priority deep into the process if the 2012 in-state DT class is weak. Sounds like there’s only one Texas good one in the state.

Itasca Wampus Cats, Holla!
The great thing about Muschamp is that if he has backups that can play, he’ll do crazy stuff like play them in a first quarter series, and on key possessions. That’s why we were able to shut Tech down so thoroughly on their last series in Austin- everybody was fresh.

Someone explain to me why we are willing to take Quincy Russell back but wouldn’t let the decommit to Baylor in last year’s class (lost his name just now) back in.
Not to say he made the grade, but still.

Why kill the momentum?

Ahmad Dixon?
Huge difference. He played the street agent game, he lied to the staff, he was committed for a lot longer than 24 hours. Look what he continued to do after he decommitted to us with his committments to Baylor and Tennessee and back to Baylor

Dixon decommitted because his agent told him to hold out for more dough. At least, that’s how it seemed to the ignorant internet at large.

funny you mention marciano. i just a week ago, maybe, looked him up on boxrec and was stunned to see he had never been defeated.
good analogy for boom.

Marciano? “He kicked Joe Lewis’ ass!”
“why is it everytime I’m talkin’ ’bout Joe Lewis some white guy gotta bring up Rocky Marciano?”
loving the Reed commitment. history would suggest the guys we take from that neck of the woods end up panning out in one way or another…see Robison and Dunn. still waiting on Mack to pull someone from the silent H-town.

silent ‘h’? you mean like cockney silent ‘h’ or cagney? you know, like ‘honor and off ’er’.
i’m tryin’ to think what town has a silent ‘h’? or do you mean, like, beat the ‘h’ outta them?
i’m flummoxed.
was actually looking up joe louis. saw that he was whipped only, like, three times ever. his last year he was getting a little toothy, but, following a decision loss, i think to ezzard charles, he won another 8 bouts in about a year. a year! fought 8 times as an emerging geezer. but then he ran into the younger marciano. boxrec says he was knocked through the ropes and the ref stopped it without a count.

Helmet Boy -
I think you offered the perfect counterpoint. Nicely stated.
I’m with you on CB.
bates -
Exactly. They should be finding undersized OLBs/DEs who can really run and pass rush, but aren’t big enough for a proper 4-3 DE. There’s your 3-4 OLB.
Similarly, they should be all over good undersized DTs for the 3-4 DE spots. That 6-2 255 pound DT who is cat quick and we’re not sure can hold up at 2 technique, is a future 3-4 DE star.
Taylor –
Exactly. I would submit that Muschamp has coached only four complete players at Texas: Earl Thomas, Lamarr Houston (SR), Aaron Williams, Brian Orakpo. Everyone else is a guy he puts in a situation to succeed.

You have to factor in that the Brown Bomber was 146 years old.

oh, no. i’m aware of that. i’ve seen several of his late career fights and knew that he won despite having lost much of his quickness. you can see it. but not long ago i saw very scratchy film of louis in his prime. ho lee smoke. it’s a shame that he predated good film at that age.
i wouldn’t have given a plug nickel to see the fight with marciano, but get them together both in their primes. or one of them and young ali. hey. maybe they do that stuff in heaven. maybe that’s what makes it heaven. i can’t believe all those harps and stuff keeps people quiet.

as with our last class of beef, I won’t be surprised if one of our OL decides to look elsewhere, which would give us another spot in this year’s class for a late boomer or out of state flier.

I really like Reed as a prospect.
I also wonder if Kendall Thompson could be a Big LB for Texas.
by Petey on Apr 25, 2010 4:17 PM CDT reply actions
Kendall is a DE. Unless you see 3-4 in our future.

don’t underestimate the allure of Austin to help attract these kids. it is unparalleled in beauty and attitude to anywhere in the South or midwest. no longer just a Texas city with appeal, it is a national gem. truly gorgeous. still, great recruiting by the Longhorn staff. hookem.

He looks like a 6’5 STUD DE. I hope Reed goes into BEAST MODE on the field as soon as he gets to Texas.
