College World Series Legends Team

The NCAA And CWS, INC., recently announced their College World Series Legends Team.

The 28 members of the Legends Team, pared down from an original list of 95 nominees, were selected after more than 100,000 votes were cast by college baseball fans, college baseball writers and Division I head baseball coaches.

The Horns landed four players on the team and one coach. Or should I say only one coach.

As we get closer to the College World Series, we'll try to get an interview with Legends Team member and 1993 MVP Todd Walker.

What do you see? Any surprises? Any glaring omissions?

Of the 25 players only 10 of them played on a championship team. Dave Winfield is the most intimidating athlete I have ever seen on a baseball diamond.

What about on a basketball court or football field? Drafted in three sports, that’s kind of good.

Best player in the history of college baseball? Pete Incaviglia.

uh, no Keith Moreland? I guess being the CWS leader in hits for 25+ years isn’t what legends are made of.

I was lucky enough to see some of these guys in Omaha during the early- and mid-1980s. Clark, Ventura, and Incaviglia deserve the nod. I remember being particularly impressed by Roger and then a few years later, Greg.

I lived in Boston when Roger was with the Red Sox, and used to buy bleacher tickets to watch him play. He was one of the few guys whose pitches you could hear from that distance.

I always liked Garko, got to watch him his whole career at Stanford… but top honors? I recall a couple of clutch CWS plays, but I’ll have to go back and figure this one out. Saw Street pitch versus Stanford, and saw Burt Hooton pitch back in my student days, when Disch-Falk was on the campus and had a limestone hill in center field.

Keith Moreland for sure needs to be on this list. I think you could make a case for Tim Moss as well. That guy was good.

Greg Swindell, IMO.

So, is Gus fourth on the coaching list?
