Big 12 Media Day: Mack Brown
Browns owns these environments. He worked the room like a polished public relations expert, called every reporter from the most obscure Midwestern periodical by their first name, and weaved a tapestry of verbal magic.
This obscured a couple of questionable Brown assertions that went unnoticed by the reporter cattle, who had already distinguished themselves over the course of the Big 12 Media Days with various inanities.

“We did a lot of self study and found out that we had more explosive plays when the quarterback was under the center in the running game as well as the tailback being right behind the quarterback.”
What timeframe did we use? 1998-1998?

Will there be a salad wagon?
That baby is freaking me the hell out.
I said it the other day, it’s days like today that make me a little hesitant about THE TRANSITION. Mack is often compared to a politician. Not true. Politicians don’t say shit, and simply spin. There’s a lot of substance here, particularly the agent-speak. Dude is brilliant.

That’s right. Didn’t you see Jeremy Hills tote the rock against UTEP?

“Explosive play” is now defined as “a play where your running back gets exploded at or behind the line of scrimmage.”

Thank you, Peter.
That comment and the heady rush that you describe absolutely enable everything else that Coach Brown does. From the subtle shots across a bow to distracting gospel-falsehoods, everything is made possible by the tact & personality.
Information Society, imo

I’ve been watching some 2000-2002 games lately as I lay myself down to sleep at night. Not only are our running schemes and production hit and miss, especially against defenses with a pulse, facing 2nd and 9, 10, and 11 over andover, our pass game during that era was frustratingly basic and infantile. Remember the two and outs when you need 4 for the 1st? The litttle curl and stop patterns? The rare instances when one of our receivers would catch the ball in stride down field?
And we had a future pro QB (Simms), future pro RBs (Benson, Young), future pro recievers (Roy, et al) and highly considered and recruited OL throut the line.
Surely we aren’t going back to that fucking future.

I remain convinced that the only thing our offense really needs are a couple of O-lineman with Studdardesque attitude.

He wasn’t spinning when talking about the running game, or lack thereof?

Yes, Mack is smooth and he owns these environments. But that’s only possible because the media members are lazy or incompetent or too starstruck to call him out on the utter bullshit. And I have a hard time admiring that “quality” in him.

Blues -
Mack having a high EQ and having a command of a room and the media being lazy dumb shits are distinct phenomena.
If someone did challenge him, Mack would handle it well.
What “utter bullshit” should he called out on other than what I just did?

Scip,
I’m not criticizing what you and others on this site have already pointed out. That’s precisely the kind of stuff I’m talking about. My frustration is with the mainstream media that force-feeds us his nonsense. He takes liberties with the truth and has for years. What bugs me is the newspaper writers and the cottage industry of pay-site operators who are worried about access won’t hold him accountable. There are already numerous examples on this thread where the facts put the lie to his assertions, but you won’t read that shit in the paper or see it on TV. As a consequence, the offensive ineptitude we’ve witnessed for the last 10 years never changes because there isn’t enough pressure on him to demand real change from his asshole buddy who “coordinates” the offense.
I actually wish BC could get credentialed and attend these functions. Maybe if the mass media reporters heard someone with a fucking brain ask him a real question, they’d stop lobbing softballs and demand real answers.

Nice Saab, Mack. To be fair, he didn’t “unquote” himself.
It’s sad that the best example of a quality non-con game occured 4 years ago. Of course, we didn’t know Arkansas would be Nuttless when we scheduled em.

Not Tim Nunez, nordberg. Just a guy who wishes Mack would either fix the goddamn problem or stop blowing smoke up my ass that he’s going to.

I agree, Blueshorn. Texas has had zero rushing yards since Brown announced in January we’d try to improve the running game. He’d better remedy this problem before he talks about running the ball again.

I think it’s safe to say that Coach Brown and Bellmont spend a significant amount of time managing their messages. Like a good stumper, Coach Brown is always “on message”.
That’s one of the interesting aspects of this session and the whole Summer – they have obviously created an expectation of running the football and tweaking offensive sets. If there was no intent to do this, fans wouldn’t hear such a coordinated effort.
In fact, there has been such a focus on these changes from Bellmont, that Coach Brown hasn’t left himself a lot of wiggle room.
by Matt Cotcher on Jul 30, 2010 10:31 AM CDT reply actions
We’ve been hearing on an annual basis for years they were going to fix the running game problem in the off-season. They haven’t fixed shit and I’ll believe it when I see it.

I have been reading BC for quite awhile but have never written anything until tonight but a couple beers and a boring Friday night and some of the criticisms of Mack (Blueshorn, I’m looking at you) have motivated me tonight.
Some of you are either very young and experienced little of the 1980’s and 1990’s of Horns’ football or just have damned short memories! With Mack as our coach, we are 128-27 (If I can add), a winning percentage of .826; have won 1 MNC and played for another; won 2 other BCS bowl games and are 8-4 in all bowls. We are 6-6 and 7-5 against our 2 biggest rivals (OU and the Ags, respectively)
In the 12 years prior to Mack’s arrival, we were 77-60-2 (Again, if I can add), a winning percentage of .554; we never sniffed a MNC (Unless you call that debacle in Dallas against "the U’ a sniff); we were annihilated in all 3 major bowls in which we played; we were a whopping 2-3 in all bowls. We did manage to go 6-5-1 against OU at a time when they were at a historical low point but we were an atrocious 3-9 against the money machine (How could we ever go 3-9 against ATM!? I pray that it never happens again!)!
I even had Ags lie to me back in those days that they didn’t even get excited about beating us anymore because it happened so regularly. You young guys can’t imagine what it was like losing about 8 in a row and something like 10 out of 12 to those guys. Unbearable! Those years are why the Ags think that they are an historically elite program!
Sure, I sometimes get a little frustrated with our running game and things like the NC State and Stanford losses in the early days of Mack’s tenure were tough to take but we have had a hell of a 12 year ride with Mack at the wheel. I look forward to the remainder of his era!
Hook ‘em!

I agree 100% with An old Horn! Also Blueshorn’s rant is one of the most idiotic things I’ve read about Mack and the Horns. He doesn’t have a fucking clue!

Nice rant, old Horn. I’ve been following the Horns since 1963. Hope this helps.

old Horn. Don’t take it personal. This is an anti-Davis site. Look for the good here. There is much more to savor.

Old Horn, three of our recent losses to ou were 63-14, 65-14, and a 12-0 shutout (the latter two with VY.) Those are the games where Davis galvanized his detractors against him, and established his reputation for a predictable or non-existant running game.

“Old Horn, three of our recent losses to ou were 63-14, 65-14, and a 12-0 shutout (the latter two with VY.) "
The most recent of those was 6 years ago.

sinless1, can you explain to me how losses by scores of 63-14 and 65-14 reflect poorly on the OFFENSIVE coordinator of the losing team? 12-0, yes, and I was madder than hell that afternoon and a few other times in the Mack era. That being so, the last 12 years, in toto, have been a great ride and I have trouble criticizing too much the man that has taken us on that ride.
All I know is that I clamored for Freddie Akers and his terrible, unimaginative offenses, to get the boot and I got my wish. Over the following 12-15 years, I wound up pining for Freddie Akers.
Paraphrasing the sainted DKR (And I agree that he deserves that status, even though there were occasional lean years!), “Those other teams have kids on scholarship, too!”
