Texas Longhorns - Open Practice 1
Coming into practice we already knew the secondary was money, the bigger concern was OL play, running scheme, receiver quality, basically everything having to do with the offense.
Coming out of open practice 1 I can assure you that the secondary is as good as we suspected and I have as many questions about the quality of OL and receiver play as before. Let's start with
Scheme:
Lot's of under-center and plenty of shotgun as well, the mix is promising and calls to mind the Indianapolis offense even more than usual though there are a lot of other influences at work here as well though that I'll cover.
The primary running plays worked on were Power, Inside Zone, and Draw.

Also, leave it to Greg Davis to find inspiration from an offensive weapon from the mid 90’s, it’s a good one though.

Awesome report. You are normally not a sunshine-pumper… so to hear the glowing optimism from the offense is very encouraging.

Great, great stuff.
Was Calvin Howell out there and if so was he getting snaps? How did Walters look?

Thanks for the report. I couldn’t make it last night, but I’m going tonight, and will give a detailed account on the talent in the stands.

Thanks for this. Anything of note from the Tight End/H-Back/Flex bermuda triangle?

Kevin,
I heard from many that Howell is huge and was holding up really well in the interior, but that he looks a little out of shape. Not fat mind you, but that he was getting very winded. At this point he may only be good for 10-15 plays a game. However, if he’s not carrying a ton of bad weight and it’s just a conditioning issue I have hope. Everybody I talked to said they couldn’t move him though and that he is a huge man. Dorsey OTOH they said looks way too heavy.

My New Seasons (Years) resolution, I will not question Greg Davis. I will not question Greg Davis. I will not question Greg Davis.

I’m a fan of Shead. Not as a RB though but as a FB if he stays on offense. He’s a talent maximizer and he’ll work his ass off for the team and I would love to see him come through the hole and level a LB on a lead draw.

Nickel,
Were we playing mostly or exclusively 4-3 over on D? I wonder if playing Randall at Nose and Acho 81 at the 3 tech while lining up in a 4-3 Under look might play to our strengths more.

Thanks for the report. It’s good to have some info on something finally happening again. Was Irby out there? I would love to know how his knee is holding up.

Are Scott or Gideon being asked to cover slot receivers at all or are they both deep in passing situations?

I also find it encouraging and discouraging all at once that Trey Hopkins was working at OT. Can someone watch him tonight a report on how he looks?

Six years of attendance at UT and I never once saw the Albino Squirrel. It’s a myth, much like a productive Texas running game.
Good to hear Gilbert is checking down and taking what the D gives him. Thanks for the report.

Albino squrrels ran rampant back in my day. Of course, so did Ricky Williams.

" This is where Vaccaro plays into the 2010 Longhorn Defense, as the Big Nickel."
Dear, infant baby Jesus, please let this be true, when Texas rolls into Lubbock.
“Malcolm Williams: This is the one guy on offense that the defense just didn’t have a good answer for. He had a deep touchdown he pulled down in tight coverage on the sideline and then poof, gone. His acceleration is unworldly and it absolutely destroyed Gideon who couldn’t reach him as a cover-2 safety and wouldn’t have sniffed him in Cover-1. I’m setting the over/under for Malcolm X TDs at 8 and I’m taking the over.”
Malcolm Williams 2008 3 TD’s
Malcolm Williams 2009 2 TD’s
Oh, Oh, pick me, pick me, may I please have the under for a Tortilla Retort pullover?

Limas Sweed 2004 23 rec, 263 yards, 0 TDs
Limas Sweed 2005 36 rec 545 yards, 5 TDs
Limas Sweed 2006 46 rec, 801 yards, 12 TDs
Malcolm Williams 2008 17 rec, 304 yards, 3 TDs
Malcolm Williams 2009 39 rec, 550 yards, 2 TDs
Seems like similar trends to me over their first two years. Limas also was fighting a Ship, or Quan for targets either.
by Fico on Aug 12, 2010 11:28 AM CDT reply actions
Correction: Limas was not fighting a Ghost or Quan for targets.

It seems if there is one school whose fans would not doubt Malcolm, it would be Tech. Of course this assumes rational and reasoned thought, so perhaps that is not too surprising.

Yo, I is! Actually, I am more blonde and not a true pink-eyed example, got It? Good, now about those nuts …

I’m not sure I have answers for any of the questions. In drills Gideon and Scott both picked up the tight end or slot. I’m betting Scott does it more in games because his coverage is better and when he doesn’t get there before the ball he still brings a huge hit.
Irby is not playing yet.
I noticed 4-3 Over but I didn’t really pay attention to anything besides that. Typically it’s been a multiple front D though so you can count on different looks. Randall is the NT in every look I checked.
I didn’t notice much individually from the trenches except what I reported. Overall the D wasn’t giving much and Randall is a wall.

People on OB said this was the whitest, worstest O-Line since O line’s began and then started yelling at each other.
Are ytou saying I can come out from under my desk?

If there is one place you can afford a bunch of white boys, it’s on the OL. I don’t expect this one to be worse than in previous seasons, if only because they won’t be asked to do the impossible anymore.
Ulatoski to Hix in pass protection is a real downgrade and so is Hix to Mitchell but that’s partly why you’ll be seeing TE’s and HB’s. Chip blocks.
The albino squirrel, in my days, could be found rather regularly in the morning around 8 by the geology building in the ROTC mini parade ground. He is for reals.

Are the WRs that big an issue? Malcolm is going to drop a pass around once per game but he is also going to require either a big cushion or a double team. He’s going to generate lots of YAC, will get open, and is a bad ass blocker. Most teams would kill to have Malcolm. Goodwin is another guy who demands either a double team or a big cushion and is going to get lots of YAC. Chiles is reported to be significantly quicker and was already a reliable pass catcher and good blocker. Kirk is pretty solid and Mike Davis looks like a great prospect. Given that the horns will frequently be deploying only 2 WRs, doesn’t it seem like the WR situation is OK?
Given that Tray Allen has a foot injury, how likely is it that Tray recovers well enough to be reliable this year? If Tray either does not return or keeps getting reinjured, will that devastate the OL?

Sounds like Texas could beat the hell out of the Saints. I like how every problem can be explained away because they are simply playing the best team in the country on the other side.
No running game? No big deal. We’re trying to run the ball against the 85 Bears.
