Longhorn Football Practice Report #2: Full Pads

It's on.

Full pads popping. 3 on 3 Oklahoma drills. Bevo placidly observing his minions through a Ambien-addled haze.

Star-divide

Texas talent on and off the field in full display. 92 degrees in the shade. Ballers balling. 10,000 Burnt Orange maniacs coming out to watch a football practice. All concluding with a rousing singing of the Eyes of Texas.

Bevo has put on about 120 since last year. Mostly good weight. Would like to see him work on his agility.

Also, I’d like a little more aggression, maybe a goring.

Did we use an H-back in motion in the 11 on 11’s? Thanks-

I am little concerned about the prospect of going big nickel with Vaccaro, Gideon and Scott. That’s not a lot of coverage ability, though I’m glad you are saying Vaccaro is showing some ability there. Oh well, I’m sure WM will figure it out.

Patrick Nkwopara is showing a lot of tenacity in continuing to come to practice despite the constant threat of being carried off by winged creatures.

Randy –

We did. Expect to see a lot of twins with the TE and H-Back stacked opposite.

I absolutely agree with you.

But don’t define coverage conventionally. We’re going to be doing some crazy stuff out there. Two LB blitzers overloaded on one side with a corner coming while the LBs and DE drop into zone.

Man-zone combos. Etc.

It’s Year 3 and this defense is about to get introduced to complexity.

Then drinks, Trudys, and succulent BBQ out of a trailer the next day.

So, you make it by Franklin BBQ?

Wood was just plain confused by all the looks Muschamp threw at him. You would be too.

Of course I would be. Then again I was confused by all the looks Vasherized threw at me at the last BC Board Meeting.

Franklin BBQ is the truth. Sold out of food by 12:30. Gave the guy a good tip on a SF sushi place and he snuck me out some extra brisket and sausage for the road. That place is everything that is right about Austin, TX.

I think you short changed Greg D. You credited him for the reverses and the draw. You neglected to mention that we ran a real screen pass! I am not talking about the Brett Robin shuttle pass that we always throw on 3rd and 15 or more late in the first half (which, incidentally, cost us 7 points in the national championship game). No, I mean a real screen.

I’d give the O scheme a C+.

“Inside zone, outside zone, and a little inside counter. . . Add in the diversity of the draw game”

We better have a lot of plays this year because the D ain’t going to be on the field very long. When I think about that and I think about Jackson Jeffcoat, Reggie Wilson, Jordan Hicks, Tevin Jackson, etc I get a little melancholy. When the D excels they go sit down. Converse for O. Watching the D is like the first time I saw Braveheart. Sometimes watching the O is like nordberg fucking a meat football.

So what exactly is DJ Monroe’s role in the offense? RB? WR? Or is he strictly special teams? I ask because he’s on of my favorites…

DJ works with the WRs and RBs, but he’s mostly a special teams guy. We’ll have some special plays for him, but that’s it.

Sounds like the second half of the Title game then? 2 TD’s and 3 costly turnovers. Debating if I can live with that against the two teams close to ’Bama talent level on our schedule.

From Mack’s Friday Presser…. VERY INTERESTING…

“Emphasis continues to be on the running game, the backs and the offensive line. The offensive line and the running game are at a tremendous disadvantage during practice. You can’t cut the defensive lineman in practice. We don’t want to hurt our own guys, so in many cases, they can’t even cut off, they have to just stick their head in front of a guy. A lot of times you’ll see penetration in a scrimmage like last night or a ‘thud’ practice and he would have been cut, he wouldn’t even be in the backfield, so it’s hard for those offensive linemen and then you have to cut enough dummies. When you get in the game, that’s the first time they’ve really had live work where they can turn it loose and do that, so they’re at a tremendous disadvantage, but we’ve got to continue to work on depth there too because we lose three or four of these guys for next year and losing Tray Allen for the moment has forced us into looking at a lot of other young guys. The two freshmen are playing right in the middle of the mix, Dom[inic] Espinosa and Trey Hopkins are doing really well and we’re proud of both of them and they’ll have a chance to play this year.”

So does THAT explain why all our defenders are looking all-world or why our Oline looks so inept?? Methinks it AT LEAST explains some of it.

by Orangechipper on Aug 13, 2010 9:14 PM CDT reply actions

interesting, although the linemen haven’t thrown cut blocks well the last few years. Normally a good zone-running team relies heavily on the cut block.

Great news about Cody being in great shape. Ogbonnaya commented (back in the day) about how smart Cody is.

One great thing about Cody is that he can really punish a nickel or dime much more than Fozzy or Tres can. If you can force DBs to attempt to tackle Cody, there is a great chance that Cody can run over the DB or even hurt the DB. An advantage of playing Matthews or Whaley at flex TE (or Malcolm as the lone WR on the play side) is that they can block the OLB, forcing a safety or even a CB to make the tackle. You don’t have to block a hole or outrun the extra speedy defenders, just generate a mismatch that Cody can exploit.

Another great thing about Cody is that he can pass block an LB and even slow down a DE (Cody may be 10 or 20 pounds lighter than the DE but his lower center low center of gravity partially compensates). These aren’t things that Tres or Fozzy can do. This is a huge consideration because if Gilbert gets hurt, the horns are in trouble.

For Tres and Fozzy, running against a nickel or dime is more problematic because, typically, they don’t have the power to run over the extra speedy defenders but have to outrun or dodge them.

Not for nothing but seriously, how awesome would it be if Bevo gored an aggy cheerleader guy and his white ice cream suit was drenched in blood. Now lets assume two other things, one – he doesn’t die, two he provokes bevo beyond any possible doubt so Bevo doesn’t get in trouble.

Like the Aggy sneaks up and cattle prods him while he’s chilling on the ground chewing his cud and he humps up, whips around and inserts his right horn in the aggie’s spleen.

Seriously, if a week alter the Aggy is out of the hospital it would be the coolest sports thing ever.

Cu. Brown did not practice, but was out there in full pads. Anyone have a report on this? Did not seem serious but he was rubbing his left hammy a lot.

Please advise if you have any info.

Reggie Wilson is the truth! I believe he will be the top defensive player in this Freshman class.

Mike Davis will render Kirkendoll invisible, and that is a good thing, IMO.

This team belongs to Gilbert. He has a presence about him and will throw deep a lot, which is good. The speed on both sides of the ball is superior to anything I have seen in many years as a Texas fan.

I’m pleased that you seem pleased with some of our offensive schemes in the run game and the potential there for establishing a situation that DCs will have to take into account. But my biggest concern with GD is his situational personnel subbing that always screams at the oppositon what play is coming, and his seemingly haphazard play calling that fails to set up plays one or two calls down the line.

If the O scores 20 points every game we should play for the NC again this year. Thank you, God, for Coach Muschamp. Mack Brown has become the face for college football these days, but Will Muschamp is the face for Texas in BCS NCG’s.

“Cu. Brown did not practice, but was out there in full pads. Anyone have a report on this? Did not seem serious but he was rubbing his left hammy a lot.”

According to Mack Brown’s presser transcript on MBTF, Curtis Brown, Barrett Matthews and Marquise Goodwin were all limited because of "slight pulls." Nothing more specific than that, but it didn’t sound as if any of the three were much to worry about.

Side note: Chris Whaley was limited by sore knees. Don’t know how serious that one is, but it sure sounds more disconcerting than a slight muscle pull.

Nailed it. Or his situational play calling. I bet if we ran the numbers we call a run play 98% of the time when its 2nd and 2 or less. We probably pass the ball 98% of the time when its 2nd and 8 or more. Predictable much??

Better yet, How about Bevo just mounts the guy and humps him into submission for a crowd of 100,000 to see. Afterward, the stadium falls dead silent, the only audible sound is the faint whimper of the Aggy milkmaid as he lies curled in the fetal position.

SLD: Good move. I often tell folks considering law school to “go where they want to work;” and, as you’ve noted, “fun” and “law school” don’t really fit into the same calculation.

I am still at a Tier 1 school. For now. It needs to get its act together to stay that way and move up. :-) I debate about coming out and saying it, but who cares:. I’m at UH Law. It was between UH, Tulane, and Florida. Seeing as I already had a great support network in place through my family and friends from church, and UH is a great price, it just made the most sense. Plus, it is the closest to UT football.

I’ll be aiding UH Law stay tier 1 when I attend the Dean Nimmer DC event in September (I respect UH Law grads so much I married one!) and I’m sure some opportunity to donate to the cause will arise. Thanks for taking so well all the good natured ribbing (tame by BC standards). By the way, both participants in the 1983 OU trip referenced in my prior post are partners in Houston firms so let me know if you need “dirt” to aid in the interview process. One BC member helps another!
