Bo Pelini Has These Fangs and These Claws
In what has to be considered one of the most uptight, contentious preseason interviews I've ever seen, Bo Pelini managed to come across even more prickish than usual. This wasn't a Dennis Green or Jim Mora styled meltdown. Nope, it was even more uncomfortable than that, mainly because the press conference came after, ummm, practice, before a snap had been taken in the 2010 seaason.
I suspect there are police interrogations that are more cordial than this. Enjoy, courtesy of Big Red Today.
I thought it was especially uncomfortable when these easy going Midwestern reporters tried to take the edge off with jokes and attempts to make small talk. Just great television that needs HBO and a little production value and it will be pure gold reality TV.
As Better of Red's Farmer Ted wondered a while back, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Pelini?.
Speaking of interview and Coach Pelini's awkwardness, the whole thing reminded me of a scene from one of my favorite movies. I wanted to reach out through my computer screen and comfort Coach Bo with the following:
Dude, you're so money baby and you don't even know it. Even in front of the media. You're this big bear, and when you're in front of reporters, you got these fangs, and these claws, and you don't know how to kill the bunny. You just keep poking at it but you don't know how to kill it, you're this f'n bear and you have these fangs and these f'n claws...

Pelini is one uptight dude. I hate it when people talk and chew gum at the same time. I think the thinking that makes him a good defensive coach makes him a bad offensive coach. I don’t know if he has anything to do with the O, but I don’t see them improving much this year.

I suspect Bo is feeling the pressure that comes with outlandish expectations. He knows his team isn’t that good, and he’s sweating the judgment days he knows are coming. Severe case of puckered-ass in anticipation of the inevitable insertions he dreads. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving asshole.

If I was a journalist in Lincoln it would be hard to go to work every morning… afternoon knowing I was only going to get such nuggets. Gotta love the “yes”, “no” answers.

He appears to be auditioning to replace my 8th grade coach from 1980.
What a POS.

He needs to lay off the ice. What’s that furtive glancing around, like a caged animal or something?

Agree. Painfull. But that guy can coach defense, I will give him that. He will get in GD’s dome again this year and we will have to win ugly.

I hope that beautiful attitude rubs off on his team.

He’s trying to deal with the people’s constant appetite for anything Husker related. He’s never really had to deal with this before as a coach. You toss in the expectations for this year and some of the injury concerns that we had and it’s a constant 24/7 sweatbox for the ol’ Gum Chewing One.
That being said, I agree with most on here that he needs to take some PR classes to learn how to deal with people. None of the questions were out of line (although some were down right ridiculous) The funny thing is that it’s just our local media that he seems to be a giant ass prick to. You put him in front of a camera on the Jim Rome show, and you’d think Mack Brown or Tom Osborne was holding up the cue cards for him.

Maybe, but I get the feeling Texas wins this by at least two touchdowns. Minus Suh, Nebraska gets blown out by Texas. You don’t lose four key defensive starters as a non-elite non-reloading program (ie; Texas, OU, Florida) and get better.

Society owes Bo a big debt of gratitude, because there was a point in his life where he was either getting into football or serial killing. Praise the little baby Jesus that he found a pigskin before a butcher’s cleaver.

That’s interesting, Mister Mike, because that’s also Bob Stoops approach. Curt, short answers given disdainfully to the small time media (who wouldn’t criticize him if he told them their mothers were $5 whores), to create the idea that the coach is a hardass and difficult to talk to. Then, when he is more open and revealing to the big time media, they feel that he has really confided in him, and has utmost respect for them. They respond by hanging on every claim and falling all over themselves to praise his program.
Of course, this approach only works if you’re winning. If a prick like this ever slips up, the local media will crucify him.

@TaylorT
That part may be like Bob Stoops, but I know for a fact that if you ask any one of his players, they would all run through walls for him. Why? Because they know he has their backs. In the three years he’s been here so far, he’s never once threw a player under the bus for anything, even when he would be justified in doing so.
Also, part of what you’re seeing here is Pelini still spinning down from what had happened in the local media that week. The problem was that one of the local reporters slipped up big time (Sean Callahan from Rivals, I think) when he crossed the line and reported injury information about one of the players (believe it was Sean Fisher) before it had been vetted through Pelini or at least through other members of the staff. He called the family and asked them about the “rumor” that their son had been injured and they confirmed it.
The second issue that week was that some moron poster (also from the Rivals board) posted that he was going to practice, solicited questions from individuals on the board, and then proceeded to post what he witnessed at practice on a public forum.
Now to me, this really isn’t a huge deal, but those are the rules that Pelini and the program have asked reporters and people to abide by. Like it or not, that’s the way it is and those two incidents sent Pelini into low orbit. I still say that Pelini needs to learn how to embrace technology, the internet, Twitter, etc and be aware that the fans aren’t trying to step on his toes, they just want news about the Huskers.
Is it going to get better? My guess is yes, but I couldn’t tell you how much. Maybe he’ll go from biting some hapless reporter’s face off to merely nibbling on his ear.

I wouldn’t call it awkwardness. I’d called it hostility. He obviously loathes PR — the experience and the people. Probably didn’t help that practice went badly. I’d love to see a reporter who didn’t walk on egg shells with him.

Since he obviously can coach, the attitude and lack of press savvy must be the reason it took him so long to get a HC job. He hopped around quite a bit and there were rumors of booze and hating recruiting. He just seems like one of those guys who wants to coach football and do nothing else. Maybe they’ll be ok with that up there but when he loses games he’s going to have to learn some level of poise.
Imagine if they pull a game like Iowa State this year and lose at home with 7 turnovers or whatever. He’ll have to have better answers now that people are actually watching him.

Hey Bo, dont look now but the Texas game is HUGE. For you.
Just another jihad road game for Texas. When you absolutely positively have to have a victory, Texas coming down the tunnel in the tight whites isnt usually a good thing.

Don’t be a bit surprised if they lose to KSU in the Little Apple in the Thursday night game before Texas week, providing someone can keep Bill Snyder awake for portions of the game.
You gotta believe his palyers are as wound up as he is, and way too focused on mean old Texas.
Oh and Whistling, fuck off!

Very reminiscent of a Donald Rumsfeld news conference except that Rumsfeld does more of the rhetorical asking a question to himself and answering it.

I’m guessing Nodoze every hour in the film room chased by liters of Mountain Dew. Travis Bickel was more at peace.

If you dealt with the Oklahoma media for a decade…hell, for a half hour….you’d be terse and prickish, too. You’re used to the (relatively) intelligent and adept reporting of the Austin American Statesman. We have the Daily Oklahoman. And Jenni Carlson. Jeezus.

Is there a better example of polar opposites when it comes to dealing with the media than Mack and Bo? In the same conference? For now?

I hear that Texas is traveling to Lincoln by train because they ass-whipping that they’re bringing with them would’ve cost $565,578.35 in overweight baggage fees had they flown.
Pelini is right to be fearful.

OK, but to nit pick I looked up banal and it doesn’t seem to apply here. However, I get the fatiguing and clean it up parts.
