Texas-Rice Open Game Thread

If we can stop Tommy Kramer, we may have a chance....

Announcement:

We will have a quick halftime podcast to wrap up the first 30 of action and set the table for the second half slaughter. It could prove to be the worst effort at live internet radio in the history of mankind and you should probably tune in on that basis.

Listen:

YPMIR Listen Live

By the way, Eddie Jones is one hooping mother.

F*** it, it’s football season.

Woke up this morning and blared the fight song in accordance with my game day ritual. Neglected to wake up my 6 month old puppy first, whom upon the blares from the brass, jumped up and ran full speed attempting to jump through the glass portion of the back door. I pray this is just because I startled her and this is her first football season, and not that she is a rice fan

by JSB on Sep 4, 2010 5:25 AM CDT reply actions

I just woke up too. Are we up by a touchdown or two yet?

I’m going to go get a beer and find out. Goddamn I love football season.

Rest easy: a Rice dog would never have reached full speed before missing the back door entirely.

Then it would have spent the rest of the morning telling itself that it’s all right to have failed, because its pedigree is better than yours.

Then it would have logged on to its alumni wiki and looked up “Best Practices for Running to the Back Door.”

Eddie Jones has nice form and wow, John Chiles really does look lean and ripped (no homo).

by t1climb1 on Sep 4, 2010 7:31 AM CDT reply actions

Will there be a way I can listen to the podcast later? I will be busy running around telling everyone in my neighborhood that we freaking rock at halftime, and probably then puking up all the joy I’ve been drinking onto their porch.

Don’t judge. It’s a ritual.

by uttuck on Sep 4, 2010 7:33 AM CDT reply actions

Who didn’t expect Applewhite to use the backboard?

Also, did anyone else expect Akina to fire a laser off of a DBs head just to prove to him to CATCH WITH HIS HANDS! DAMMIT!?

Oh yeah, I’ll be in the stadium too and am highly disappointed that I’ll miss the second, daily BC podcast.

I will be taking my 5 month old to his first game, I hope he doesn’t piss all over his Longhorn outfit during a changing session – if so, he may just have to suck it up!

I’ll be taking my camera to the game (new hobby, fancy DSLR) and will try and point you to a few pictures later, just so you all will know how awesome my goal line seats are/were (God I hope I don’t fuck up my grammar with Dave out there).

by uthookem on Sep 4, 2010 9:33 AM CDT reply actions

I benched LaDarius Green in favor of Barrett Matthews today at TE in FF. That is betting with emotion for sure…

But I expect the Texas Defense to Mudhole Rice and give me 25 points.

by BrickHorn on Sep 4, 2010 3:08 PM CDT reply actions

It’s time to take the training wheels off of Gilbert.

We establish the run, then come back with a stupid reverse, run a screen that hasn’t been set up in the passing game yet because Gilbert hasn’t thrown downfield, and then throw a 2 yard route to Greg Smith on 3rd and 17.

Vintage.

by Scipio Tex on Sep 4, 2010 3:08 PM CDT reply actions

I can’t blame GD for this. I’m seeing execution issues from guys who know better.

by ransomstoddard on Sep 4, 2010 3:09 PM CDT reply actions

The bad news is we’re having trouble stopping Rice. Our vaunted defense is loaded with upperclassmen who cannot quite keep track of which side of the field the ball is on.

Bullshit. Multiple guys had him stopped, driven back several seconds, and there was no reason to piledrive him. Thuggish chickenshit was what that was, and incredibly stupid.

With only 2 slots in the BCS title game, Texas gains the most if Rice wins the rest of their games, wins CUSA, and gets a ranking. Otherwise this game gains them nothing since it wasn’t a huge OU style blowout. Injuring one of their starters late in the 4th when the game is basically over doesn’t help that.

Note how Mack is already talking up Rice in the interview, he gets it.

by Inexcusable on Sep 4, 2010 5:41 PM CDT reply actions

“With only 2 slots in the BCS title game, Texas gains the most if Rice wins the rest of their games, wins CUSA, and gets a ranking”

Did you even watch the game? I am rooting for Cotton Bowl at this point. We have 3 losses minimum headed our way.

by Newy25 on Sep 4, 2010 5:43 PM CDT reply actions

Eh, I’ve been predicting for months it would be 2 or 3 losses. That said, UT looked fine for a first game. I expect this will be a weak year for undefeateds, so anything is possible.

by Inexcusable on Sep 4, 2010 5:46 PM CDT reply actions

Newy – a tad early for that. Could we drop a couple? Sure. But you exclude the possibility of “improvement”, where I do not.

by BEHorn on Sep 4, 2010 5:47 PM CDT reply actions

Don’t worry about our prospects too much based on this game. We chose to slow play this and did some good things in the areas we need to work on. Muschamp will chew ass to fix our lack-ass run D in the second half, and we got raped in every possible fashion on stupid bounces and referree fuckups. We do need to get Chykie some pussy so he can stop thinking about it.

by cody on Sep 4, 2010 5:53 PM CDT reply actions

I do not exclude the possibility of improvement. Everyone on our schedule also has the opportunity for improvement too. Every year during Mack’s time at Texas major flaws that show early in the season always cost us when it matters against real competition.

Had this been UCLA or someone with a pulse this Texas team is 0-1.

by Newy25 on Sep 4, 2010 5:56 PM CDT reply actions

Why is K. State taking a knee against UCLA with 25 seconds left?

by P. Carroll on Sep 4, 2010 5:58 PM CDT reply actions

UCLA is not materially better than Rice. We won’t see a team with a pulse for a little while yet.

by BEHorn on Sep 4, 2010 6:00 PM CDT reply actions

that was the most boring game I’ve watched in a long time.. I found myself watching Michigan vs Uconn… and boy oh boy its fun to watch when rich rod has a pat white like qb… they looked very good…

If its 4th and goal and we are on the 2 with a 250 lb running back.. why do we sweep to the outside? … nothing like watching back up QB do nothing but hand the ball off… did they not learn anything from not letting Garrett get meaningful snaps last year>??

by Travis on Sep 4, 2010 6:00 PM CDT reply actions

Rice went 2-10 last year and plays in Conference USA. They are the worst team on our schedule.

UCLA went 7-6 and plays in the Pac 10.

Watch the spin that tries to equate Rice to some real football team to explain our struggles.

by Newy25 on Sep 4, 2010 6:02 PM CDT reply actions

I could live with Cotton if it got us a shot at Florida. Best. Cotton. Ever.

Before today, I felt we’d lose 2 regular season games, and I pretty much feel the same way after.

Our offense is just gonna be hard to watch this year.

by Homesick Alien on Sep 4, 2010 6:38 PM CDT reply actions

I like my prediction of 3 losses alot. The offense is absolutely horrible.

by ransomstoddard on Sep 4, 2010 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

Of course you do.

by nobis60 on Sep 4, 2010 6:56 PM CDT reply actions

I love getting back from the game and seeing all you whiners. I know men are babies, but some of you take the cake.

Scip has said for a while now that we’re going to sacrifice points to get guys experience. The offense will get there. Give the new QB some time to gel with his receivers in games.

I don’t know if I can handle a bunch of crying men all season. I have enough stress to deal with.

by Sasha is a Longhorn Dog on Sep 4, 2010 7:16 PM CDT reply actions

I expected some tears, but besides Scipio, this seems ridiculous. It wasn’t the prettiest win, but at no point after the 1st quarter did Rice have a chance to win. Florida won by about the same score, but that was in doubt until the very end.

We showed that we are determined to run the ball from the ace set. We were stubborn with it, and showed the most success with that formation in YEARS. The line got a chance to block straight ahead and actually did a fair job.

This was the first game of a completely new style, and it was a C+ with absolutely zero attempt to open anything up. I guess I am the only one who actually felt satisfied, but I do live in SEC country. Take away a fluke TD to end the half, and a bonehead play by Williams on the punt and we cruise to a Muschamp / Alabammer style 31-3 win.

by jinx on Sep 4, 2010 7:42 PM CDT reply actions

Yup – I book this as a 28-point win while forcing the run. We didn’t look as sharp as I’d expected after some of the paens sent up during practice reports, but saw nothing today that made me worried that this team can’t achieve the potential that I expected from them (which is a one-loss season with a BCS bowl, with the potential for a MNC berth since the two toughest teams on our schedule have high-functioning retards at QB).

by nobis60 on Sep 4, 2010 7:50 PM CDT reply actions

Perhaps some of you should go visit the Florida boards — the Gators had 26 yards total offense after 3 quarters against Miami of Ohio.

I am fully in Scipios corner after this one. If we look like this next week on offense, that is another matter.

by Steve Ross on Sep 4, 2010 8:18 PM CDT reply actions

Well, I watched the game in person and wasn’t horribly surprised by the result. One of Rice’s TDs was a complete fluke and the other one was a combination of two bad decisions (why is you best cover CB returning a punt in the 4th quarter of a blow-out? And what was he thinking?).

That being said, two things trouble me: Cody averaged 3.9 ypc and Tre averaged 3.2 ypc. against Rice.

I’m all for running it more. But we really didn’t run it effectively today. We need to figure out how to run from a two-back set. This Ace set has never worked for us and it still didn’t today. Why we insist on using it I’ll never understand. We didn’t get much push from the offensive line and the second level of the defense was usually at the line of scrimmage to meet our backs. That’s why a lot of teams use a fullback.

I’ll otherwise reserve judgment on the new offense. Malc looked reallly sharp. Gilbert gets a B+. I wish we’d gotten the ball to Mike Davis. Kirkendoll has not improved at all. Chiles made on very nice catch.

As for defense, generally it was OK. Gideon was late on help and tackled poorly — not surprising. Chykie is still a headcase and a liability. Our young DEs lookled great. Robinson is a man among boys.

by Toadvine on Sep 4, 2010 8:19 PM CDT reply actions

Agreed nobis. I think the hard thing for some to swallow is the change in identity. It is easy for me, because this is the offense I would have always liked to see (or some version of it).

My brother-in-law thought I was crazy when I told him during last years Wyoming game that I would gladly trade Bama’s offense for ours. Keep forgetting to check back with him on that one.

by jinx on Sep 4, 2010 8:19 PM CDT reply actions

Toadvine-

I am no football expert by any means, but I think we stay with the ace set because it puts more skill on the field. YPC could have been much higher if we would have looked to pass the ball.

I’m no GD apologist by a long stretch. No gray hairs yet, but I will attribute some of the first to him. That said, I was pleased that he gave the OL no quarter and forced them to open holes against 8 and 9 man fronts. Had he given up and gone to shotgun to score a ton of points I would have been pissed. He stayed under center, and will have good game film to see where mistakes were made and where we can get better.

Of course it would be great to have a 5* RB to make this thing work, but we will have to wait until next year for that. Was I the only one who noticed that GG stood in a space with no Rice player near him for 15 yds after most play action passes.

Sure this was Rice, but I was still pleased with the gameplan even if the results could have been better.

by jinx on Sep 4, 2010 8:27 PM CDT reply actions

jinx,

I like the idea of running the ball more. But there was a “charge of the light brigade” element to continuously running the same play from the same set with the same result into that 8-man front. I just don’t think that works without extra blocking help at the POINT of attack. That’s different from extra blockers down the line. That block on the second line of defense is what pushes first contact back two yards, gives your back a chance to run over a safety instead of a backer, and generally lets you gain more yards.

by Toadvine on Sep 4, 2010 8:36 PM CDT reply actions

by action on Sep 4, 2010 10:47 PM CDT reply actions

Very vanilla O, Mack wants to keep as much as possible under wraps until Tech game.

The more you hit in practice, the faster the progress but it also makes serious injuries more likely. My impression is that Mack dials back the practice violence a bit to avoid injuries and that this contributes to lack luster early season games.

Malcolm and Goodwin looked great. Chiles looked good on his one catch.

It was tough for Texas to adjust to the altitude when we played in Wyoming and it will be tough for Wyoming to adjust to the heat of Texas.

by Kafka on Sep 5, 2010 7:42 AM CDT reply actions

Would someone please explain this to me? Our offense was inside our own 20 in the North endzone, and they ran play action to our back and rolled out right. Zero (and I mean zero) effect on the Rice defense. I was in that endzone and had the perfect angle. Not a single Rice player went with the back. It was as if it didn’t happen at all. Had Gilbert actually handed it to the back he could have run forever. But, nothing.
My first thought was the play action was not that poorly executed, so what could it be? Did we tip that it was pass?

by il_cativo on Sep 5, 2010 8:56 AM CDT reply actions

To me, Johnson seemed to run out of gas after about his 6th carry, Newton his 9th or 10th. Up till that point, both were more effective than the numbers indicate. Fozzy looked good all around, but on a tired defense.

Johnson clearly needs more time on the treadmill. I cringe to think about what this kid could do at a lean 225-230. Not sure who thought it would be a good idea to give him the ball 4 times in a row on the goal line when his conditioning to this point clearly indicates that he would be huffing and puffing after 2.
