Harrumph!! If you’re a Texan, then why don’t you talk like one? You know, like Walter Cronkite, or God.

Man, that word on not saving things like bootleg and counter was the truth. It’s stupid not to get reps on constraint plays everyone knows is there.

Maybe I’ve been in Cali too long.
Nickel -
Yeah, that’s kind of where Blake and I were going with that. The other team is going to be practicing the constraint plays whether we show them or not. We might as well get Gilbert the reps in live action so he can get used to repping it real time. And it would help our backs to time the running game appropriately so that they don’t always think they have to sprint to the hole fearing a backside defender.
I learned a lot from Blake and was really impressed by the ease with which he communicates concepts. There’s a reason he has a flourishing private tutoring business for aspiring college players and he has already had several students land FBS ’ships to quality programs. Dude knows his stuff cold and he has a great teaching style. He also has S&C knowledge far beyond the average bear. Or Chicago Bear.

It’s all good on this side. You just go up there and click play.
I’m not sure what link you’re referring to.

Blake’s a good guy. He always was a solid technique blocker - like the time against SMU he grabbed a stumbling Phil Brown by the shoulder pads and tossed him into the endzone - totally illegal, but great technique.

I remember a big crackback block he had in a game against A&M. Wish I could find it on Youtube.

Is there a podcast URL, so I can download to my podcatcher?

Fantastic addition to the site. You guys have bumped it up a notch.
Just a suggestion: In the future, if you could squeeze the occasional tidbit of S&C advice from Blake, that would be fantastic. I know this is probably beyond the defined parameters of his input on these podcasts (i.e. Longhorn football analysis), but I for one would love to hear anything he can offer in terms of advanced training techniques and concepts. This is obviously a cat who knows what he’s talking about in this area.

Just used IE and it worked. Must be something with google chrome..

Me not know. Me not technical. I don’t think so. But we’re working on it. This is where the technologically types chime in and save my bacon.
TKO -
We will have a Hog Call strictly dedicated to S&C. Believe it.
Texoz -
Thanks. Didn’t know it had incompatibilities.
LHS/Jasper -
Thanks! It will be a weekly feature.

Why is it that a team like TCU has a more physical offensive line and they are able to run the better better than TCU? Is it personnel, scheme or coaching?
by Patrick on Sep 8, 2010 4:22 PM CDT reply actions
Patrick -
I’m not sure if I understood your question, but it’s a combination of all three.
TCU will get equivalent athletes to ours by simply using a position switch from DT to OG or growing a high school TE who is 6-6 into an OT. Then they coach them well and put them in schemes with a lot of variety, counters, and a running threat at QB. That really opens things up for them.
Many Texas fans still think that OL play is about talent, but this is the most coaching/development intensive position in football except for QB.

Brockermeyer used to ride his bike to class when I was on campus. You DID NOT want to get in his way while he was riding.

Listened to this only just now, and I’m glad I came back to it.
That was some very interesting insight into some of the mechanics that go into the overlooked aspect of run/pass blocking. Like a lot of experts, you could tell that Blake’s answer to a few questions was a well informed “it depends”, given that you’ve predicated your particular answer on a sound set of fundamentals that apply to almost any offensive philosophy.
I’m looking forward to the next installment, and some nuggets on core training for athletes that weigh 250 pounds and up.
