Texas-Wyoming Football Preview 2010
Wyoming is 1-0 after a sloppy 28-20 win over Southern Utah on Saturday.
The Cowboys led 28-10 in the 3rd quarter and game accounts suggest that they lost focus, expecting to cruise to a 42-10 type win, but allowed Southern Utah to score 10 4th quarter points. An ugly win for a Wyoming team that expects big things after last year's Fresno State bowl win.

Right on, Brother! Here’s to hoping the blindside play doesn’t result in an early McCoy appearance. I’d prefer that come in second half mop-up. Thanks for the continued great insights.

Nice prep game for Tech. I’m expecting a UTEP 2009 type of win.

Thanks, as always, for the thorough and insightful pre-view. Having a sense of who and what to look for makes the game a lot more fun to watch.
This game should be revealing for us in terms of the improvement we see over the Rice game last week, particularly with taking the training wheels off Gilbert and showing some coherent offense as you point out. I will be disappointed if we are still “working on establishing the running game.” Isn’t that what spring practice and fall camp are for?

“They return a lot of experience here. Christensen likes to use his 4 WRs in the short and screen game and then look for opportunities downfield when the opponent is lulled. "
Everyone turn and stare at Chykie.

I don’t expect anything resembling a UTEP 2009 type of win, but I’ll be Vaccaro-mad if it looks more like 28-10. I’ll be happy if something during the game inspires a new Urban Dictionary entry for Vaccaro-mad.
Thanks as always for the great preview.

Good stuff Scipio.
Austyn Carta-Samuels actually did play last year against us in Laramie. He came in for Robert Benjamin in the 3rd quarter, went 7 for 12 on 68 yards passing, with 0 TD and 0 INT. He hasn’t relinquished the starting gig since then. He also has a tendency to choke in the big games as he was shutout 3 times last year. (Colorado, Air Force, and BYU)

This is a tough game for the UT coaches to get the team motivated. You want to show respect & sympathy, but you’ve got to fire up the team to defeat and vanquish the opponent. Plus, you’ve got a big game the following week and you need to do things to prep for that.
If Satan, aka Stoops, was coaching I say we cover in a blow out, but Mack has a big heart so IMO the game will be closer & lower scoring than expected.

Their offense sounds like a science experiment for creating the perfectly wrong offense to play our D. If our defense doesn’t outscore their offense, I will be surprised. If we don’t look better on offense, I will be depressed. This one will be very telling for our future this year. Thanks for the writeup, will keep an eye on 8.

“On Saturday, Wyoming ran 25 times for 36 yards. Yikes. Their leading rusher … went 13-40-1 with a long run of 16 yards. He’s 5-11 210 and from Houston. Last year he ran for 640 and was their leading rusher.”
I’m sorry – were you describing Wyoming’s running backs, or ours?
Let’s see if Muschamp doesn’t have the ends keying on the QB rather than RB this week. Otherwise, I think Bartoncreek has it about right.

Texoz on the nose. If we get a two TD lead, you can expect Mack to run HB Dives for the rest of the game and kill clock.

It will be borderline suicide to try and dink and dunk over the middle against Vaccaro and Scott. Someone will be knocked unconscious.

We had 62 of 72 plays from under center against Rice. I expect to see more of the balance that GD and Mack had in mind and see more Shotgun from us. That means more points. I see a 48-10 type game. Further, I see less of the burn the clock mode that Rice had. Do we cover the spread??

ASC was fun to watch in the bowl game last year and Alvester Alexander’s not a bad running back. But considering his output against Southern Utah, doesn’t look like they’re opening holes for him.
Dave Christiansen’s second best Tiger offense team – 2008 – went into Austin and got beat easily. It’d be a surprise if UT doesn’t kill Wyoming. It’s the home opener, after all. 48-10 sounds about right.

Maybe I’m not getting the sarcasim, but I have a hard time believing Mack pulls the emergency brake on the offense too early. The team clearly need to the work and he wouldn’t jeapordize his season by taking a game off against Wyoming because he feels sorry for them and let’s be honest, if you just lost a teammate or loved one, does it really make you feel better or worse to lose by 14 or 35?

Kenny “Waterboy” Vaccaro. Sure not meant as an insult either.
I love the description: “Vaccaro-mad.” As in rabid-dog mad. Barking-fucking-mad.
Akina should give Kenny an alka-seltzer tablet to chew on just before sending him on the field. If I’m a receiver with a route over the middle and I see Vacarro back there frothing at the mouth…I’d shit myself and be done with it.

We need to slaughter this team. With all the hype that Boise State is getting, I would hate to be in week 11 and have to listen to people say:
“Boise beat Wyoming by 47 and Texas only beat them by 28 AT HOME!!! Boise State is clearly the better team.”
We need to kill that noise now, and lay a serious beat down on Saturday.

Oh, and the most amazing thing about Kenny Vaccaro….
Some law school student decided that he looked like a guy that he should pick a fight with within the past year.
I am not sure what I like more about Kenny…that he will knock a guy out on kickoff coverage, that he will knock a guy out in run support, that he will knock a guy out coming across the middle, or that he will knock a lawyer’s teeth out in between pick-up basketball games.
Who has next?

I’m not sure our offense is designed to beat anybody like that UTEP game last year… I think we stick with our new offense, and continue under center and consume a lot of clock in doing so..
Our defense might convert some of those woulda shoulda’s and possibly get us 14 defensive points but I see another extremely boring methodical day.
I can’t believe that it has gone full circle from the Vince days and wanting offense non stop.. To I could care less if our offense is ever on the field, much rather watch the D these days
UT 38 – Wyoming 7…. Getting a nice backdoor cover though, which is right at 29.5 today

I like us running power against that DL front or any other play we have that allows the OL to fire out against 270 pound DL.
The way we’ve run zone in the past often negates the tremendous strength and size advantage against these scrub linemen that any Iowa St. can find and teach to slant in a gap and ignore backside integrity.
My own meager addition to Scipio’s awesome breakdown is for everyone to watch how Huey-Snow-Walters handles their front in the running game on both man-blocking and zone-blocking plays. If they aren’t bulldozing in man-blocking that’s a concern, if they are opening big holes in zone start feeling good..
A less enjoyable game might be to wait and watch for Davis catching Wyoming in blitz with a well-timed screen.

We destroyed one of the Louisiana schools after Katrina when everyone in the stands were being nice to their fans, some even wore Mardi Gras beads. I don’t think the unfortunate accident for the Wyoming players hits us as hard as the Aggie bonfire disaster.
I think the person who points out that both we and Boise St play Wyoming makes a good point that Mack will likely take into consideration. OU stomped a common opponent in 2008 enough to get the nod over a (better) team that beat them head to head.
If our offense breaks numerous ten and fifteen yard runs, I will not be bored.

Kasey, before you accuse a young man of choking you should watch game films, see what happened and get facts correct. He did not start for the first time until the fourth game of the season. The Colorado game was the third game of the season. And as far as choking in big games, five of the six wins he directed involved fourth quarter comebacks, including the rivalry with CSU which may not have the national attention as Texas-Texas A&M but has more animosity and stronger bragging rights. I can tell you that from having experienced both rivalaries. He also was the MVP in the New Mexico Bowl which may not seem like a big deal to some but it was against a Fresno State team that was a strong favorite, and also gave Cowboys their first bowl victory in several decades. Not saying he’s going to blow anybody up, and not saying he will be able to riddle the Texas defense, but to accuse an athlete of choking is a serious charges and shouldn’t be thrown around friviously. The Air Force game was a major disappointment, but it was much deeper than anything involving ACS and the TCU game. … Well, TCU was easily the best team that played a game in Laramie last year, hands down, without a doubt.

The difference being that Texas plays teams like Wyoming as warmups, but Boise State plays teams like Wyoming as their regular schedule. It’s the difference between cupcakes being at most 25% of your schedule or around 66.6% of your schedule.
Back when a dominant Nebraska program was taking heat for playing teams like Akron, at least they weren’t playing ten teams like Akron. Boise State is lucky they only spend one or two games in the national spotlight each season, and that the rest of their schedule doesn’t draw much attention.

I wasn’t saying anything about overall schedules or even a comparison of schedules between Texas and Boise State. The original point was about how the meatheads who vote in the polls may use the comparison of how Texas and Boise did against a common opponent if the decision is between choosing which squad to rank higher.
Glad to see a Wyoming fan here. I went to last year’s game and I’m sure TCU looked better than we did when we played there. Wyo made a good showing.

You know, we actually did get a decent push at the point of attack, particularly when we ran power stuff. We just haven’t cleaned up the backside very well. We can do some of that with our passing game and some versatility in the running game.

Well, I’m a Wyoming fan who after last week’s pathetic showing is seriously hoping that our playbook was limited to three plays, and that our defensive line let runners through on purpose. If that’s not the case, I’m prepared for an Oregon – New Mexico type game, where ACS is forced to run for his life, and the Texas runningbacks average 15 YPC.
I know we pretty much don’t even have a snowball’s chance in you-know-where, but I guess weirder things have happened. Mostly, I’m just hoping the Pokes show up and come away from the game without injury, and still having a reason to be proud. A 14-point loss would be great in my opinion…
However, after watching all our comebacks last season, Longhorns better not let Cowboys remain in the game late. Wyoming can play well above their talent level, and will do so if there’s still hope. Either way, I’ll cheer for Cowboys no matter how bad things get.
Powder River, let ’er buck!
PS:
Nice breakdown. I always enjoy reading these. I’m also thankful for all the respectful comment by Longhorn fans all over the place in regards to the Narcisse tragedy. Thank you for being class acts. I wish I could come down to Austin for this game, but… baby’s due tomorrow, so guess I might be watching from the maternity ward ;)

As a Wyoming native, I hope Wyoming plays a good game, but I just don’t see any threat here to Texas as all. Even last year when Texas played like shit and Wyoming played pretty well in the first half the game was never in question.
Wyoming is not used to the crowd noise that should be present for the home opener in Austin. (Although Wyoming did beat Tennessee at Tennessee a few years back, I think we all know Tennessee is not anything close to the real UT). Assuming most of the Texas fans aren’t passed out from the drinking and the heat, I expect a number of false start penalties from Wyoming
Speaking of the heat, it will be a huge factor too. Wyoming doesn’t have any depth to speak of. I can’t emphasize this enough. The weather in Laramie this time of year is fucking cold relative to Austin. Expect a ton of cramped up Cowboys in the second half of the game.

Glad to see I’m not alone, but I have to correct you here- last year’s win in the NM Bowl was Wyoming’s 2nd Bowl win in the last 6 years. The drought ended against a heavily favored UCLA Bruins team in the 2004 Las Vegas Bowl.
Lately, Wyoming has a habit of delivering one big upset per year, and this is the first big opp of the season. I’m hoping for a win, expecting a good showing, and looking forward to a fun time in Austin mingling with the class-act and terribly fun Texas fans. I wouldn’t worry about the crowd noise. It may….may be a slight factor on the first one or two third downs, but rest assured our crowd does not have it in us to get load for Wyoming (or virtually anyone) more than a couple times a game.
Additonally the acoustics in our stadium only hold soud decently well on one end and not that great even in the middle. Bottom line, it really won’t be a factor. If they can handle playing in Tenn, Austin will be no problem. Noise in Knoxville>>>>>>>Austin.

They posted some interesting interviews of GD and Muschamp on MBTF the other day. Davis came out and flatly said we will be throwing the ball 35 times a game once this offense is running on all cylinders. I think we’ll definitely see a far more varied passing attack against Wyoming, hell, it’s our last game before we have to play someone with a serious shot of beating us. There’s no holding back once we get to Lubbock.

I saw it. I have no doubt about the passing game. I predicted before the season that Gilbert would throw for 235-240 a game. I would just prefer we not ease him in. I want real game reps before Lubbock. Not training wheels. Maybe I’m just being totally impatient and I’m scarred from Simms era OU game plans.

I’m a Texas alum, so from that standpoint I’m not worried about the crowd noise. The few times I have been in the new improved stadium I’ve been impressed—Mizzou two years ago in particular. I was at the open end of the stadium and it was damn loud. I realize this game won’t be the same, but it’s 90k versus the 35k Wyoming gets on their best day.
Even if all the Texas fans just shuffle in their seats a bit, I expect it will have some effect on the game, but not as much as the heat.
