That Joe Tiller is a heck of a coach, but he’s no Fred Akers.

I know it will sound callous, but I hope Mack doesn’t overdo the weepy condolence thing here. There’s appropriate acknowlegement, and there’s ill-advised obsequiousness.
Let’s stick to #1 and focus on the job at hand.

Vondrell McGee out for the game b/c of academic issues but apparently he’s in good academic standing.
Brian Davis strikes again.

Canuck, no.
Glad to see the training wheels come off in the first drive, but would like to see us get 6 there.
Hix has his third false start of the young season.

Open in 4-2-5 with Acho inside and Jeffcoat starting.

You know that Greg Davis is dying to screw this whole running experiment and just start airing it out on every play.

You know that Greg Davis is dying</em
Man. That phrase really got my hopes up.

I’m no fan of the hurry-up power running offense.
by Toadvine on Sep 11, 2010 6:31 PM CDT reply actions
The risk/reward was out of whack on that sideline pass to Mal, but great job aggressively taking the ball.

The O is really starting to frustrate me.
by floridianhorn on Sep 11, 2010 6:31 PM CDT reply actions
What a shitty screen. Fuck. Just like every year except 2005 and 2008, I hate our offense.
by BrickHorn on Sep 11, 2010 6:31 PM CDT reply actions
Worst. Screen. Ever. Bad place to call it too. they aren’t blitzing.
by Toadvine on Sep 11, 2010 6:31 PM CDT reply actions
Apparently the hills have eyes in Wyoming, too.
by nobis60 on Sep 11, 2010 6:32 PM CDT reply actions
We’re really not that into giving our offense a chance to succeed. This gets back to Scipio’s thing about Davis’ inability to call plays situationally. That was a random screen — out of a shotgun — that he rain because it was third down and he hoped that maybe they’d send the house? And leave single coverage on the outside? Right.
by Toadvine on Sep 11, 2010 6:33 PM CDT reply actions
Does Davis still script the first 15 plays of the game?
by BrickHorn on Sep 11, 2010 6:34 PM CDT reply actions
Wyoming’s MO is zone on 3rd and long with lots of men in coverage. Usually rush 3 or 4.
A screen is the worst thing you can run. Just so bizarre.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 11, 2010 6:35 PM CDT reply actions
I just made a mold of barrel-dude out of mashed potatoes.
by sizzlechest on Sep 11, 2010 6:35 PM CDT reply actions
A screen is the worst thing you can run. Just so bizarre.
That’s why I asked about the scripting. It could explain the complete lack of situational appropriateness.
by BrickHorn on Sep 11, 2010 6:36 PM CDT reply actions
Yes, Leonard is just like Jordan Shipley. Except he’s 6-4 210.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 11, 2010 6:37 PM CDT reply actions
Davis needs to take a page out of the Christopher Guest playbook when it comes to sticking to the script.
Isn’t it charming that there’s no way to distinguish between a situationally inappropriate call due to scripting or a situationally inappropriate call due to gross incompetence?
by nobis60 on Sep 11, 2010 6:37 PM CDT reply actions
Davis’ idea of being creative is just calling a bunch of random ass plays with no cohesiveness, believing that the random nature in and of itself will cause the defense to be confused. Scipio is exactly right. There is no consideration at all of the situation outside of perhaps down and distance, if that.
by Cricketslayer on Sep 11, 2010 6:38 PM CDT reply actions
Pressure only rushing 3. Awesome job by Acho.

3rd and 1 and we get another false start. Geez.
Thank God Taylor Doyle is on his way!!!!!!!!!
by Scipio Tex on Sep 11, 2010 6:44 PM CDT reply actions
Wyoming rushed two there and Gilbert pressures himself.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 11, 2010 6:44 PM CDT reply actions
So then we go max protect on a 3rd and long. Because they don’t blitz.
by Toadvine on Sep 11, 2010 6:45 PM CDT reply actions
I blame a lot of the false starts this year on fear of failure that results from our shitty scheme.

by Cricketslayer on Sep 11, 2010 6:52 PM CDT reply actions
Does Texas have any clue what they’re trying to do on offense? It’s like Davis is pulling plays randomly out of a bag. Garrett looks very raw right now. No way this the number 4 teaming the country.

we need those punt blocks to keep the offense on a short/off field

by scagnetti on Sep 11, 2010 6:56 PM CDT reply actions
You know, we all said Gilbert was the most important player this year (maybe other than Randall), but I’m pretty sure that Sherrod Harris could run this offense equally effectively. Or little McCoy. Or Richard Walton.
by Toadvine on Sep 11, 2010 6:56 PM CDT reply actions
Based on their performance so far this season, this appears to be the worst Texas offense in the Greg Davis era.
by BrickHorn on Sep 11, 2010 6:57 PM CDT reply actions
Since our offense is so inept, it’s a great thing we are able to directionally kick the ball so well.
by tim on Sep 11, 2010 6:58 PM CDT reply actions

by PVogel on Sep 11, 2010 7:00 PM CDT reply actions
This is actually really, really embarrassing. There is no way to put a positive spin on what this offense has done this half.
Is Cody Johnson not playing?
by Toadvine on Sep 11, 2010 7:01 PM CDT reply actions
Gilbert has a ton of ability but the game hasn’t slowed down yet, and nothing we do schematically helps him a bit. I am starting to wonder if Barrett Matthews banged his GF though.
by nobis60 on Sep 11, 2010 7:01 PM CDT reply actions
I like Curtis as the punt returner. A lot of quickness.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 11, 2010 7:02 PM CDT reply actions
There are no easy yards for this Texas offense.
by ultralight on Sep 11, 2010 7:02 PM CDT reply actions
Let’s go ahead and get the ball into the hands of White, Williams, Davis, Goodwin, and Monroe as much as possible. F#ck everyone else. Our only chance to score is to break big plays out of nothing.
by Toadvine on Sep 11, 2010 7:03 PM CDT reply actions
Heard Cody was out tonight.
Our backs’ invdividual talent is about 5th on the list of our run game woes, but having watched a full day of CFB watching the difference between what they get on swing passes/half decent blocked plays and what so many other D1 backs get is startling.
by nobis60 on Sep 11, 2010 7:04 PM CDT reply actions
Tech is going to light us up if we don’t show some sort of spark on offense. Our D is fantastic, but 3 points against Wyoming is simply unacceptable.
by Cricketslayer on Sep 11, 2010 7:04 PM CDT reply actions
At least send Vaccarro after Knox during this possession so we have some entertainment value while the O is on the field.
by nobis60 on Sep 11, 2010 7:05 PM CDT reply actions
Can this offense score any points in Lubbock next week? That game is starting to look Loki an L.
by Holy Cow on Sep 11, 2010 7:05 PM CDT reply actions
Yeah, the defense looks great. As they should against Wyoming.
I told you Goodwin needed the ball and it’d take superhuman effort.
Chiles is clueless.

by Toadvine on Sep 11, 2010 7:08 PM CDT reply actions
Real emotion comes from real achievement.
Our D doesn’t struggle with emotion Mack. Ponder that.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 11, 2010 7:08 PM CDT reply actions
Davis has no faith in Gilbert, apparently. Hence the lame-ass horizontal screens.
Newton falls down easier than Hodges Mitchell.
by Toadvine on Sep 11, 2010 7:09 PM CDT reply actions
ANY misdirection creates at least a degree of space. Although about 100 D1 backs get the first down there.
by nobis60 on Sep 11, 2010 7:09 PM CDT reply actions
scip – you guys doing a halftime podcast, or will you be dumping tabasco in your eyes after this offensive abortion?
by eljinca on Sep 11, 2010 7:09 PM CDT reply actions
Q sneak is clearly our best play. We should simply run it on every down in every game.

by Toadvine on Sep 11, 2010 7:26 PM CDT reply actions
It’s time for Vaccaro to start growing up Darren Woodson-style as the slot in our Big Nickel. I’ve seen enough. If you are stupid enough to look over and start drifting towards a man 15 yards inside you that’s already double covered, you will never be smart enough to be counted on. You just can’t go from indescribably stupid to trustworthy.

This wake-up call really is encouraging if we do something with it in the 2nd half. If we start running screens against two man rushes or max protecting 3 man rushes, my heart will be as heavy as Taylor Bible’s lunch box.

Davis and Brown need to open up the offense. When the play calling is tight and conservative, the players are tight and conservative. It’s that simple. Play with abandon, have fun. Davis, the freshman, hasn’t been around long enough to be contaminated with the GD cautiousness.

Every Newton carry takes a minute off my life. How many times must I watch the line give him a crease only to see him get two yards or less? There was a reasonably blocked off tackle play that looked for all the world like it would break for six yards or more, and Newton got two. Two! The stiff-arm notwithstanding, he goes down immediately at the first hint of contact.
But all he does is score touchdowns!

Penalties killing us this game. Coaches can’t be happy with these errors, even if the calls are questionable. On the other hand, the announcer is right that Gilbert’s throws are sometimes a little tall and lacking touch on the short routes. Not that we would run a 15 yard route on 3rd and 15.

I’m hoping that by opening up the offense in the second half, Davis was showing more faith in the receivers, and they came through-particularly the young guys and Goodwin. (Hope he is ok.) It’s hard to imagine that Davis lacked confidence in Gilbert.
We have so many stars on defense this year. They can have the press. The offense will do their job, if they can stay healthy and have a little time.

Does anyone else think that ransomstoddard’s view of the world is basically ‘The Road’ on a constant loop?

Was Einstein able to see this specific moment because of relativity? That shit has always totally confused me.
Marty McFly, imo.

No sacks? I remember the Wyo qb going to bed with the football way behind the line of scrimmage, courtesy of Sam Acho at least twice.

The defense only gave up seven and were not seriously threatened all game. Turnovers will come, they did cause one fumble. We will beat tech, but it won’t be pretty. We have an sec offense…lots of punts, and lots of big plays. The emergence of Mike Davis is huge.

If you’ve ever seen The Great White Hype, Oregon just shook off an overhand right and asked Tennessee, “Boy – you tryin’ to embarrass me on national TV?”

After watching the game and being confused on our offensive play calling it all makes sense when I look at the big picture…..We needed a solid running back and promising Malcom Brown that we plan on running the ball more so we showed him the first game….Now that he has signed we are back to the business of play calling nonsense plays

Mack meant that the Texas o-line didn’t give up any sacks.

Man, some of you guys sound like you just couldn’t quite get in enough complaining over at OBs. Reading this type of Chicken Little Crap makes me feel gross, like weakness is trying to infiltrate my skin and infect me with fear. Go punch something or take your testosterone pill already. I’ll wait for Scipio or Nickel or somebody to give a level headed analysis later.

One of the main problems was stalling out in the red zone. We did it the first two times and that hurt the momentum. Then from the middle of the 3rd all the way to the end of the 4th the Offense had issues either with play calling, or execution, or penalties.
The defense did well, but I thought the whole second half was kind of poor. Way too many penalties. When Wyoming did have a good play it was usually due to losing outside contain or rushing the passer without discipline.
I think everything can be corrected, but I just hope it happens this coming week.

Should I feel bad because I’m fine with the game? I guess I just can’t get upset until we lose.
Guys I fel like I’m letting the side down

I just got home and I haven’t read this thread.
But I’m getting the feeling, like being beaten over the head with a baseball bat, that we don’t have what it takes to run the kind of offense we’re trying to run. Yeah, I know, shocking.
Fucking go in shotgun and do whatever it takes to get the ball to Goodwin, Davis, Williams, and Monroe. Give up on this stubborn fucking “WE’RE GOING TO RUN THE FUCKING BALL!!” stuff because it’s obvious we’re just clueless there. Let Gilbert be Gilbert and get the ball to our ridiculous playmakers.

I love reading the live game thread after spending a day on the 40 acres. I get to relive the 70 painful memories and the 7 good ones like they just happened.

We’re fine. We have plenty to work on, though. Their QB is legit and we did open it up a lot more on O than in the Rice game. Baby steps, but steps nonetheless.

Defense studly, Offense dudley.
The prob with O is that it is built to make 3rd and 4’s, but we can’t make em consistently…Erg
tech gonna be tuff
