Thoughts on the offense against Texas Tech
Let's fast forward a few years into the future. Mack Brown has retired, and Will Muschamp is the new head coach at Texas.
Muschamp calls Greg Davis into his office.
Muschamp: I've always taken care of you, Greg.
Davis: Taken care of me? You're my junior, and you take care of me? Did you ever think about that -- did you ever once think about that? Send Greg off to do this -- send Greg off to do that! Let Greg take care of some women's football clinic somewhere! Send Greg to pick somebody up at the airport! I was stepped over!
Muschamp: That's the way Mack wanted it.
Davis: It ain't the way I wanted it! I can handle things I'm smart -- not like everyone says -- not dumb, smart and I want respect!
Muschamp: Greg you're nothing to me now you're not a colleague, you're not a friend, I don't want to know you or what you do -- I don't want to see you at the practices -- I don't want you near my office -- when you see Mack I want to know a day in advance, so I won't be there -- you understand?
That day can't get here soon enough.
Offense
What pissed me off most on Saturday night was Davis' lack of a killer instinct. Blake Gideon gets a pick, Tech gets a personal foul and we got it 1st and 10 on the Tech 20. Momentum is on our side, and it's time to sweep the leg. Put 'em in a body bag, Greggy! So we promptly lose three yards on a handoff. Then we throw a four yard pass to the running back. Then Tech gets a pick six and a potential 21-0 lead is now a 14-7 ballgame. Our offensive coordinator is Mother Theresa and every opponent is made up of Calcutta orphans.
Curtis Brown returns another interception to the Tech twelve. Sensing a pattern? Yes, our defense puts our offensive in position to succeed. So what do we do on first down? Play action pass into the endzone? Alas, no. We run it twice for two yards and then throw underneath to Greg Smith. But give our offense credit for a field goal, right?
Just as the rise of Google is taught as a case study in business schools throughout the country, our clock management at the end of the first half will be taught at coaching clinics. It was embarrassing. At the very least we could have used the two time outs to figure out what the f*ck we were going to do on offense once we got the ball. You know, instead of coming out and taking two straight sacks. And yeah, we called a screen on 2nd and 17 with Tech rushing only three. And yeah, our running back failed to stay in bounds on a 3rd and 26 run.
Quarterback: Have you tempered your expectations for Gilbert yet? His best football is still ahead of him, but I'm not sure he can see the light at the end of the tunnel at this point. He's locking onto his receivers, he's inconsistent on his throws and he has too many passes batted down for someone who is 6'4". At some point Davis will figure out what Gilbert does best and design an offense around it. Or it will happen by accident.
Running back: DJ Monroe gains 14 yards on his first carry of the season and then never touches the ball again. Message sent. To the opponent. Fozzy Whitaker made a couple of good runs and had a couple of good blocks, but collectively our running backs were a non factor.
Receivers: James Kirkendoll had the best game of possibly his career, but I hold my breath every time he catches the ball near a first down marker. He must have been shock collared as a child or something because he has an aversion to just running for the first down. He has to juke, he has to stop. Just get the first down. Malcolm Williams' drop within two yards of the line of scrimmage got picked, but he caught everything downfield. Mike Davis dropped two passes within two yards of the line of scrimmage, but he caught everything downfield. Hmm.
Tight end: Greg Smith made a good block on Whitaker's touchdown run, but struggled for much of the night. Not all his fault. Asking him to pass block a defensive end one on one is on the coaches. They tried it two years ago on this same field, and it was a disaster. Lesson learned. But assigning him to block the backside pursuit and him giving up his inside gap is on the player. Whitaker's fumble occurred on just such a play. Barrett Mathews is overrated as a blocker at this point. He's just not strong enough and we're asking him to block ends and backers on the edge when he should be blocking safeties and backers in space. He did make a great play on his touchdown catch to leap over the penetration in the backfield.
Offensive line: Britt Mitchell had the worst game of any offensive lineman in the history of organized football. Ok, maybe it wasn't that bad. Except it was. Two sacks, an interception and forced fumble? Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week. Watching Mack Brown go looking for Mac McWhorter on the sidelines to ask him why the 6'6" defensive end wasn't cut on a screen? Priceless. The line got called for three holding penalties, but two of them were bullsh*t. Decent pass blockers, don't open up holes often enough in the running game. I'm sure I'll write that same sentence next year.
Every position on offense has issues at this point. Every one. Compare that to the defensive side of the ball. Coaching starts at the top. If you have a solid coordinator who demands accountability from his position coaches, you will be good on that side of the ball even if you don't have talented players. If you don't, you won't. Talent only compensates for so much. But you're Longhorn fans. You already knew that.

I wonder how many years we can continue to say “we’re working on the run game” with a straight face. Imagine Muschamp taking years and years to, say, “work on stopping the run”. It’s comical.
Based on nothing but what our defense gave us, we should have won this game 34-10 in our sleep.

Hmm, less subtle than say, some of the Mack Adams pieces, but I like it nonetheless.
You can see the difference in coordinators in the press conferences. Davis validates himself through esoteric statistics and denies any problems. Muschamp owns problems and vows to correct them.

I blame our offensive woes on your decision to stop drinking on the third quarter because of a Jewish holiday or something. And you’re not even Jewish.
Other than that I agree with everything else.
Definitely one of muschamp’s witchier performances. We’ll need a few more of those in Dallas and Lincoln.

First, I was not expecting a win in Lubbock so last night UT cleared a HUGE hurdle to a promising season. Go look at the schedule and you dare to dream of what might be. Going forward, the only game we will likely be an underdog will be the Nebraska game. OU has looked like ice, cold dog shit. If we play with fewer mistakes than last night, we should win.
Back to your (HJ) point. It’s surreal to go to the other board and see people defend the offense as though it has no issues. Most of the time they point to how good the offense has performed over the last 5+ years as though they have no clue to how lucky we’ve been to have Vince Young & Colt McCoy.
If you’ve watched UT for the last 10 years, you don’t have to be a football genius to have noticed that the offense has rarely outsmarted the opposing defenses. There have been moments of offensive brilliance, but they’re very few and far between. As HJ has pointed out, the play calling last night was questionable at best. The OL was a weakness, again. The much promised improvement in the running game is now flipped over in the ditch with the tires spinning.
Malcolm Brown can’t get here soon enough. And hopefully he’s not on the Whaley diet.

i think you are going a little overboard. One thing i will say about garret, is he certainly has more arm strength, but it seems to me like it is because he leans into his throws. This makes the release take more time, and he cant get as much power from corkscrewing his body like he does without having time to set his feet

Love Davis as Fredo.
You might want to visit with Eyes of Texas on the clock management. I agree with you, but Eyes thinks it was spot on. I guess reasonable minds can differ, but he doesn’t seem to think so.

No attention to detail is what gets me.
Fozzy running out of bounds at the end of the first half didn’t cost us, but it typifies our issues on that side of the ball.
Coming out of the time out you do everything short of tattooing “Stay in Bounds” on the ball carriers fucking head before the players leave the sideline. It didn’t cost us yesterday, but that’s the kind of shit that can cost you a ballgame and it should never happen.

We know Mack is not going to ever replace Greg Davis….So maybe we could at least find a top notch O-Line coach. We recruit many top notch Offensive Lineman, they play average at UT and several have moved on to the NFL which means there is big talent their but they are poorly coached at UT. The inability to run the ball over the last several years is maddening. Get a stud O-Line coach before Malcolm arrives on the 40 acres please!

We need an OL coach/co-OC who can be GD’s “junior” partner but who functions as the offensive counterpart to Muschamp. With a Boomian attitude permeating our offense and with something better than the BM that has been our RT play, we smoke Tech. Greg can be the boss as long as he does what Little Boom says.
by Traffic Jelly on Sep 19, 2010 11:00 PM CDT reply actions
Actually, this may all come to a head soon if UGA doesn’t kick some major butt in its remaining games. I am concerned. A Little Boom would be no replacement for the real one.

Re: Fozzy running out of bounds, receivers dropping passes, and OL not cut blocking on a screen pass. Obtuse observers will point to these mistakes by players and blame the players and not the system/coaching, failing to recognize that these problems have been consistent over the years. The players have come and gone, but the same problems remain. Yet, somehow, it’s the players’ fault.
by texoz on Sep 19, 2010 11:14 PM CDT reply actions
Richt will be run after this season barring a miracle turnaround. Which sucks because we are poised, with or without GD, to be the hands down favorite to win the MNC in both 2011 and 2012. Could it happen w/o Muschamp? Don’t want to find out. With an offer from Georgia, could Muschamp force Mack’s hand in getting GD a pink slip? Or will he go regardless? This is all coming to a head.

Man, I wish this could happen. Good read, HJ. Really tired of this and hate to think of Muschamp working in Athens.
Also, the first motherfucker who shows up here and says don’t worry, Mack will hire another great DC gets hit over the head with a tote bag full of Krugerrands.

I’d love to see Greg Davis sent on a secret adventure aboard Al Neri’s Chum Charter, but he won’t be. He’ll just get a pat on the head for dicking around with Mo Green’s nickel slots.
Good post.
At the 7:25 mark in the fourth quarter, with a ten-point-lead, we began a drive on Tech’s 35-yd-line. We promptly went three-and-out. You broke my heart, Greg.
Consider this, though. At that point in the game Tech had 103 yards of offense. Leave the gun, take the cannoli.
by Chooky on Sep 19, 2010 11:50 PM CDT reply actions
I don’t see how Malcolm Brown makes Davis a better coach who creates better schemes and calls better plays.
Like isn’t that the mindless wishful thinking approach we currently embrace…rather than looking for the actual reasons that highly rated OL amount to nothing at Texas after 4 years? Or examining horrible play calling that simply isn’t going to work regardless of who runs the ball?

It’s clear that the defensive players have bought into the Muschamp way totally.
The results show it.
Is the talent gap between the defense and the offense as huge as it looks?
Or is it that the offensive players just don’t have the same do-or-die attitude as the defensive players? If not, why not? [that’s a rhetorical question]
We saw the change in the defense from 2007 to 2008 because of Muschamp. The players’ talent level didn’t suddenly jump; the coaching improved. Leaders emerged.
We are stuck with the offensive coaching [that’s a pun]. Where are the leaders on offense?
I think that is a huge problem. The players need to take charge and make themselves and their fellows accountable. Muschamp doesn’t work his magic alone. He has leaders among the players who are his enforcers. Who are the offense’s enforcers?
by LurkerintheDark on Sep 20, 2010 2:50 AM CDT reply actions

As you say, Scipio, that envisioned future cannot arrive soon enough. Anyone who really believes Davis is one of the best OCs in the country need only ask himself one question: Is Boise’s offensive talent really that far superior to ours? Really?
I don’t agree with you about the clock management at the end of the first half, but I agree with everything else – great analysis, sadly.

Why did everyone think a sophomore QB with no game day experience was going to be good right out of the shute? He was very mediocre in every aspect of the game during what little playing time he got in 2009. He had / has potential and nothing more at this early date.

So true. Greg Davis’ continued reign of terror on Texas fans is enabled by the widely-believed notion that he shares no part of the blame for his players’ collective failure to execute. I hate the subhuman trash that subscribe to this “poor execution is on the players” argument, and pray for Jehovah to smite them and their sinful families, retro-style.
Every year, I point out that, against quality defenses, this offense continues to underperform in comparison to our opponents’ other opponents. I now get to simplify that sentence by removing the entire “against quality defenses” clause. That makes my vitriol much more readable, which is nice.
There is simply no excuse for the Texas’ offense’s track record of underperformance under Greg Davis. He is the problem. Or Mack is the problem. Either way, it is a coaching problem and it will not be fixed as long as Mack is here and a superhuman improviser of a quarterback is not.

HJ,
Your assessment of the O is sadly, spot on. I’m amazed that some here think that a team w/ an O as bad as this one will come out victorious against NU & OU. No matter how spectacular a D is, if an ineffective O keeps them on the field forever & constantly makes them defend a short field, it’s a recipe for disaster. And it’s a show we’ve seen far too often under Mack.

I’ve been pointing out GG’s lengthy and slow windup, his slow release and his strange release point since the Bama game but no one is listening. Combined with his to-be-expected locking on to receivers, a 4 or 5 int game is in his future.

Oh, go to hell. Calling two straight running plays right into the asses of your own offensive linemen who haven’t moved the D-line a single inch forward then following that up with the trademark Greg Davis 2-yard screen is fucking brilliant. If, you know, you’re fucking Greg Davis.
Let’s face it, he’s an old coot, and he ain’t gonna be changing his ways. And whenever he tries something “different”, the players are so shocked that they can’t even make it work.
As long as Mack stays around, Greg Davis is staying around, so you mind as well get used to it.

Muschamp would be foolish to leave Texas for Georgia. The SEC is the graveyard of coaches: Philip Fulmer won 75% of his games, a national championship and 2 conference championships – fired from Tennessee; Tommy Tuberville led Auburn to an undefeated season and beat Alabama 7 times in 10 years – fired from Auburn; Mark Richt won over 75% of his games at Georgia and won the conference championship twice – on the hot seat; Steve Spurrier – won over 81% of his games at Florida, 6 conference championships and Florida’s first national championship – not invited back when he needed a job; Les Miles – won four bowl games, a conference championship and a national championship in his first five seasons at LSU – on the hot seat. When Mark Richt took the Georgia job, he was just as hot a prospect as Muschamp is now. He’s never had a losing season at Georgia and yet he’s on the hot seat. That is the insanity that is the SEC. Even if Muschamp has to wait a few years more to coach at Texas, his career will last many years longer than if he jumps to some cut-throat SEC school. The Texas job is THE BEST job in college football. Muschamp is smart enough to see that and will not leave.

The only thing worse than Texas’s left side of the offensive line is….the right side. The OL coach continues to crank out uninspired, unmotivated lumps of dough.
They came out good, but by the end of the 2nd quarter, they looked like they were playing in double overtime and were totally gassed. I will give them credit in the 4th quarter for that ridiculous time of possession that frankly, won the game.
This one should have been put away early though. Texas gave Tech every opportunity to win that game, and we prevailed in spite of our handicaps and self throttling penalties and turnovers.
I hate Malcolm Williams. He will never be a complete consistent player. He will amaze and disappoint equally. Any long ball he caught all day was negated by letting a ball in his hands tip into an interception. We have waited two years for him to “break out”. He isn’t going to.
To me, Malcolm Williams is Greg Davis.
