Think it’s you, Max.
Ughhh to Matt Millen. Doesn’t he have a franchise somewhere to ruin?

Apparently there was a smoke machine problem and it sent a curve ball at the commentators. I blame mad dog.

Chykie has a nice Mohawk. A hallmark of focusness in a player.

Is DJ getting snaps at RB today a rumor based in reality or just something made up?
by Max Fischer on Sep 25, 2010 2:38 PM CDT reply actions
I like that we’re starting aggressively. Nicely done, Greg. Keep it up.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 25, 2010 2:38 PM CDT reply actions
Mike Davis wasn’t aware we were pooching apparently. Uh, Mike – the idea is to run down and grab the ball.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 25, 2010 2:41 PM CDT reply actions
What the eff was Mike Davis doing? He made no effort to get in position to down that ball.

“Leading the nation in winning the field position game.”
Way to slowly jog and watch it bounce into the endzone. Nice hustle…

So are the other 10 on offense The Revolution?
by Darling Nick E. on Sep 25, 2010 2:44 PM CDT reply actions
Our coaches are right about the bench not exactly bringing a ton of energy. Saw it on the Keenan hit just now and the Gilbert run earlier.
by Max Fischer on Sep 25, 2010 2:44 PM CDT reply actions
We have to get that fumble! Greg Davis needs a short field.
by Drew Dunlevie on Sep 25, 2010 2:46 PM CDT reply actions
Yes, that would have been a sure field goal.

quick strike for Arky….7-0. just dropped a pick six too.

Short fields mean don’t give the other team the ball with time on the clock. TTR says so.
by Art Vandelay on Sep 25, 2010 2:48 PM CDT reply actions
AR 7, Overated Bama 0. AR just dropped a Pick 6 at the AL 30. AL looks like they did at the start in the Rose Bowl.

Offense needs to buy every defensive player a Rolex at the end of the season.

by Max Fischer on Sep 25, 2010 3:02 PM CDT reply actions
Greg Smith is the opposite of elusive. Will we ever run a play on 3rd down that involves trying to complete a pass after the marker?
by Toadvine on Sep 25, 2010 3:02 PM CDT reply actions
LMFAO, EBS has like an invisible wall between him and the first down marker on 3rd down.
by Arriviste on Sep 25, 2010 3:02 PM CDT reply actions
The Greg Smith sucker play. Again. 3rd straight game. Defenses are giving this up for a reason, Davis, you buffoon.
And now we’re just shooting ourselves in the foot.

Elsewhere in our great conference that is so hard to leave:
UCF 7, KSU 0, late in the 3rd.
by P16 on Sep 25, 2010 3:05 PM CDT reply actions
well, that was better than a sack fumble. I’ll try to look at the positive.
by ultralight on Sep 25, 2010 3:05 PM CDT reply actions
I love our defense, but it’s not going to be enough to beat OU. Right now it looks like losses to OU and NU to me because our offense is as inept as it’s been since late 1999.
by CS on Sep 25, 2010 3:05 PM CDT reply actions
It’s no coincidence that virtually every time we use play action pass or the draw this year we get a big play opportunity.
by LonghornScott on Sep 25, 2010 3:06 PM CDT reply actions
Woo hoo! We should be able to get 3 out of this.
by Mr Excitement on Sep 25, 2010 3:06 PM CDT reply actions

Short field for the Short bus offense. I predict 3.

Again, see my comment above about Acho and stripping balls.
by t1climb1 on Sep 25, 2010 3:07 PM CDT reply actions

We should get a field goal out of this.
Keenan Robinson is killing so far.

by t1climb1 on Sep 25, 2010 3:13 PM CDT reply actions
Excitement: I can’t say on Gilbert either way at this point. It’s just too early in his career. I will say I haven’t seen any glimpses of greatness so far.

Going to need to stay clean on special teams today.
by ultralight on Sep 25, 2010 3:14 PM CDT reply actions
Tucker will be reprimanded for not kicking that down to the 8 yard line.
by t1climb1 on Sep 25, 2010 3:14 PM CDT reply actions
Even when we are in an on schedule down and distance there doesn’t seem to be any schedule at all. We’re just all over the place on offense.
by LonghornScott on Sep 25, 2010 3:14 PM CDT reply actions
Well, maybe the D can get a TD.
James T. Kirkendoll. Clever.
by Canuck Horn on Sep 25, 2010 3:14 PM CDT reply actions
Gilbert is a system QB playing in a non-system.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 25, 2010 3:16 PM CDT reply actions
What do Longhorn practices look like? Does the 2nd team D just dominate the 1st team O? Are the players instructed to claim that sometimes the offense moves the ball on em? And if so (and it almost certainly has to be the case), does this not shame the offensive staff and players?
by Max Fischer on Sep 25, 2010 3:18 PM CDT reply actions
I keep getting flashbacks to the Simms era on offense.
by CS on Sep 25, 2010 3:18 PM CDT reply actions

Unfuckingbelievable.
You don’t field a punt inside your 10.
We’re so poorly coached in so many areas.

Can’t fault Curtis for trying to keep the offense off the field. Holy Norton
by Max Fischer on Sep 25, 2010 3:23 PM CDT reply actions
Brown and Williams have both played like dipshits as punt returners. Can we just get a guy who knows fundamentals back there?
by CS on Sep 25, 2010 3:24 PM CDT reply actions
Par for the course this year. We step on our own dicks repeatedly until the other team takes the lead. Maybe we will wake up now.
by t1climb1 on Sep 25, 2010 3:25 PM CDT reply actions
Face it, we are back to the classic Mack teams of the pre-Vince era. Mentally unprepared, sloppy, tons of penalties, stupid mistakes, playing below the talent level, beating themselves. Blowing 1 or 2 games each year they should have won.
The good news is that the defense (other than Gideon) is basically exempt from that.

I don’t really know anyone on the team; but I appreciate the shout out.
by Fundamentals on Sep 25, 2010 3:26 PM CDT reply actions
I just don’t understand how with all the warning signs we’ve had with our returners that this hasn’t been corrected. Isn’t that the reason you treated the first 2 games like scrimmages?
by LonghornScott on Sep 25, 2010 3:27 PM CDT reply actions
That’s coaching. Pure and simple. You tell the returner exactly what you expect before he runs out on the field. Not fielding a punt inside your own 10 is Football 101.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 25, 2010 3:28 PM CDT reply actions
Look fellas, say what you want about coaches, whatever, but please don’t criticize true freshmen who are contributing. When you do, you are showing your ass.
Gilbert is probably freelancing because he read many of your comments this week and decided it didn’t matter if he stayed healthy. So keep it up.
Real men criticize 18-19 year olds for 18-19 year old mistakes. Right.
by java on Sep 25, 2010 3:28 PM CDT reply actions
And since players are all programmable robots who will do precisely what coaches tell them, why, any stupidity on the part of the punt returner can’t happen. It’s just impossible.
Players will never forget what they were told and will never improvise.
by Louis L'am Jones on Sep 25, 2010 3:29 PM CDT reply actions
We didn’t expect blitz there. That’s not their tendency.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 25, 2010 3:30 PM CDT reply actions
What kills me is that we know how this is going to unfold, and we’ll be sitting here in December thinking that with simply a modestly efficient offense, we could have been playing for the title again.
Wow. Gilbert looks lost.

by Max Fischer on Sep 25, 2010 3:31 PM CDT reply actions
That was going to be short of the sticks anyway. Defenses are goading us into throwing that shit TE pass on third downs.

by MajorTexasFan on Sep 25, 2010 3:33 PM CDT reply actions
Oklahoma may not be a great team, but they are at least coherent on both sides of the ball. Our defense will keep it close for awhile, but we’ll tire in the second half and lose by 10+.

What are Gilbert’s natural instincts and what has he been brainwashed to do every week? Our coaches couldn’t be more clear in what they value and teach on offense.
by Scipio Tex on Sep 25, 2010 3:41 PM CDT reply actions
alma: It’s not all on Gilbert when his coach positively reinforces making that throw. We get overly risk averse on offense and start thinking that throwing the ball in the intermediate and long zones is bad. This will last until we enter the panic zone and are forced to call plays that have a plausibility for success.
by CS on Sep 25, 2010 3:41 PM CDT reply actions

It’s not only the playcalling that kills the Davis offense. It’s the mentality. I’m convinced that the entire offensive squad takes on the personality of the coach. And that personality is, be conservative, don’t make a mistake, don’t try anything risky. But it goes against any aggressive, gamer’s instinct that these successful kids have coming out of highschool. Coached to repress their natures they begin to make the very mistakes the gameplan is supposed to avoid.

I believe we’re halfway to the 66-3 turnover total at halftime (8 that game, 4 so far today). Only difference seems to be our defensive ability to hold to field goals and turn back over.
by tdwalsh on Sep 25, 2010 4:10 PM CDT reply actions
java,
I appreciate that. And yes, our sophomore quarterback makes bad decisions and over-throws open receivers. 2 of those 4 turnovers are entirely on him. And he may have played a part in the Monroe one. And he keeps throwing to tight-ends on 3rd and 4th downs. So yes, he’s gone full retard today.
Defend away pal.

He is coached to make that throw. The Chiles pick call short throw to Greg Smith was a set play. So was the 3rd down BM drop. Then the 4th down failure was one of the check downs he is rewarded for in film sessions.
This is the offense. This was the offense last year.
Check our yards per completion against NU and OU. Teams now goad him into the check down throw purposefully.

This is so very hard to watch. I should have stayed at the bc tailgate.
The lack of attitude and drive is sad. Gilbert needs to step up here in the second half or the Simms comparisons will be hard to deny. Inconsistent recruiting and misses on the offensive line are now glaring as we play against comparable athletes.
by uthookem on Sep 25, 2010 4:14 PM CDT reply actions
Now that I think about it, Arky has a decent chance of representing the $EC in a BCS bowl, so I’m not sure the refs will do anything blatant. Especially in Fayettenam.

by F the BCS on Sep 25, 2010 4:18 PM CDT reply actions
It’s hard to tell whether Gilbert gets rid of the ball so quickly (and looks his only WR down the entire time) because:
1) He’s coached to do it (He does have all kinds of time in the pocket) or;
2) He’s never got more than one WR open (Obviating the benefit of all kinds of time in the pocket) or;
3) He’s just plain skittish and the coaches aren’t working with him on it to a sufficient degree.
At this point it’s a combination and we obviously have much bigger worries on offense. Just sayin’.
by WTFisYourProblem on Sep 25, 2010 4:19 PM CDT reply actions
Scipio,
I think you’re right on the tight-end throws. Those were probably (awfully) designed plays.
But this is the worst game GG has played. He looks clueless, he’s abandoning the pocket too early, he’s missing open receivers, he’s staring down throws, and even his completions have been inaccurate.
by Toadvine on Sep 25, 2010 4:20 PM CDT reply actions
It has been said time and time again on this and other sites. One side of the team has a core strategy in every aspect of its operation. The other has employed a mission strategy that can be described as amorphic. It is no accident it got this way and there is not the raw talent or individual moxie to make up for the shortcomings. I don’t agree with booing players, any player on scholarship was sought out by the staff and in effect was asked to come to Texas, and the shortcomings of the offense must fall upon the shoulders of the staff .

by tdwalsh on Sep 25, 2010 4:27 PM CDT reply actions
My goodness. Where does this kind of thinking come from?
First, the staff were also often sought out and asked to come to Texas. The players are hardly unique in that respect.
Second, players fuck up all the time.
If a player has repeatedly been told, all his life, “don’t catch a high punt inside your own five yard line” and incredibly does so anyway, is that really the fault of all his coaches going back ten years?
Third, if a player fucks up I am quite cheerful about listening to the crowd boo him. He earned it. I believe in accountability for everybody.
Fourth, I really cannot believe the horrible level of play this team is exhibiting and have resolved to think less about football the rest of the season. It’s just painful.

Unfortunately, this won’t be the end of it. Our offensive coaching staff has no fucking clue what to do. There’s no Vince saving Greg’s ass. There’s no Chris, Cedric, Roy, BJ, Sloane and Bo. There’s no Colt and that guy who was his dad’s roommate and Bill Cosby’s kid, either. This offense is talented, but it’s not single-handedly-fix-the-retarded-offense-designed-by-your-jackass-“coach” talented.

I was trying to punish myself by making me watch ‘til the end, but I’ve got to go throw up now. Not sure I want to watch the next two weeks either, we’ll see.

this last TD is perfect opp for mack to blame this game on the defense. “see, we just can’t give up that many points on defense. gotta get that fixed!” GD will just sit off in the corner and grin.

I will console the crying girl they showed in the stands.

We once lost a high school game by 61 points to a team we should have beaten by 60. Next week we ran 61—100 yard sprints, 61 updowns 61 of everything for practice.
My head coach was a man that understood how to teach you that you really really do not want to lose.
I think he’s going to be a senator.

Will Prince now go in the first round too?
For once Mack isn’t clapping. I’m so fucking pissed off right now.

That team laid down. Just laid down. Defense too.

Flat out quit.
Embarrassing.
Exactly like the last time the Bruins rolled into town.
I thought losing this game was a real possibility. But I had no idea we’d get bushwhacked like we have. It’s just flat-out embarrassing.

Mack made Rick Barnes look good today.

Mack will probably have a long talk with this team.

I don’t even know if the 2007 team had a game like this, and that team was horrible. At least KSU had Jordy Nelson.

Just disgraceful, horrible performance. There aren’t enough bad words.

I have little doubt that Mack Brown will now “go to work” to fix all the issues that plague this offense (except of course for the person who designs it).
It’s frustrating that it takes a loss for Mack to realize that the people/fans/media pointing out all of the flaws on his team aren’t just a bunch of whiny dicks; but are in fact simply not blinded by loyalty. Now Mack will assuredly tell us that this loss falls squarely on the coaches’ shoulders (which is just flat out fucking insulting to Muschamp), point out all of the things even casual observers have been pointing out since the spring and tell us they’re going to “work on getting those fixed”. Which makes one wonder why the fuck we can’t work on getting them fixed before they bite us in the ass.
Hey Mack, where the fuck is the accountability?

I have to say, Steve Buscemi is really interesting in the lead role.
I’m excited to see where Scorcese and Co. take us this season with Boardwalk Empire. It should at least be as compelling as Season 2 of Jersey Shore.

just saw Gilbert’s pick again. He had 10-15 yds to work with to get the ball over the LB. Terrible.

Mack: “We need to do a better of job of coaching.”
by mashtun on Sep 25, 2010 6:03 PM CDT reply actions
Actually, here’s what happens, as it always does. Mack: “we need to simplify the offense. Guys are thinking too much. More stop routes, more outs, more bubble screens. Get back to what we know.”

We had all off season to fix what was wrong with this offense. What makes you think we can fix it in one week?
by roach on Sep 25, 2010 6:06 PM CDT reply actions
Was laughing early in the 1st qtr. Laughed the entire game. GD sleeps with men. The swing pass is his new WR screen.

We just lost to a team that had less than 30 yards passing the football. How does Mack Brown keep from punching Greg Davis in the taint?
by flamingmonkeyass on Sep 25, 2010 6:08 PM CDT reply actions
And seriously, the coaches will blame the players for 3rd down receptions short of the marker…call a freakin play beyond the marker Davis. You ass. Shit.
by WWGDD on Sep 25, 2010 6:08 PM CDT reply actions
But, hey, did you hear that jock rock blaring from Godzilla at the end! The person in charge of that didn’t quit! And you know it pumped up the “patrons” despite the score! Kudos, Asst. Athletic Director in charge of Jock Rock!
This isn’t 2002 or 1997, it’s 1991. This team has no playmakers. And when your OC throws sideways until you’re down by multiple scores, and your bread and butter for years has been the Broken Play Offense, you can’t score without a playmaker or two. Defense gets tired, has to gamble. Special teamers press to make something happen. If every break doesn’t go your way, you lose badly.

The reason why we can’t beat a shitty team like UCLA is that we have absolutely no fucking idea how to coordinate a running game.
If and I realize this is a big if we haven’t seen around here since we had Ricky Williams, IF we could execute a decently blocked run game with a somewhat related counter (i.e not an end around) and heaven forbid play action, maybe a boot. We could protect our inexperienced QB.
Or we could run our same shitty pass heavy offense, and take away all our QB audibles.
by roach on Sep 25, 2010 6:13 PM CDT reply actions
34-12? And at HOME?!
Something tells me we would have lost this game even if it were being played underwater and UCLA forgot to bring oxygen tanks. They would have just stolen ours.

I wish we had a truly imaginative offensive coordinator. If Mack needs Greg around, fine, and if Applewhite is a truly imaginative, competent, talented coordinator, promote him NOW. If Greg needs to stay, fine, promote Applewhite to co-coordinator, and let him draw up game plans and call the plays. However, Applewhite should only be the offensive coordinator at Texas if he is the best out there, and for no other reason.
I would love to have Norm Chow because imo he is the best out there. He knows how to install an offense and design a game plan that uses the strengths of his players and exploits the weakness in the defense.
He did it at USC, and imo, he left when he found out about all of the illegal inducements. Now, he is doing it at UCLA. Chris Petersen looks like he is pretty good, too, but he may only want a head coaching gig.

Orange90, I completely understand why we went for 2 (you make it, you’re ahead after the next two tds, and if you miss you just go for 2 again), but when you said “Our coaches are trying to make a case for an insanity plea,” I lost my shit. bravo

Tyson would win. Clubber Lang wouldn’t stand a chance. He may have the eye of the tiger and be a pretty good puncher, but Tyson had skill. Clubber would get in some good shots, but Tyson would make him miss those wide swings and then get in there with some much more compact and powerful hooks and uppercuts. Tyson would hit him with so many shots and combos that Lang just wouldn’t know what to do. I see this ending in the second round with a sick body shot.
