Changes will have to wait for the offseason.
After putting on perhaps the worst special teams performance in modern football history last night, making a very ordinary Patriots team look like modern football giant UCLA, the Bill Parcells run dolphins did not mess around, firing their special teams coach.
Who says you can't have accountability mid-season?

That’s what happens when you have accountability. Which is not the case with Mack and his staff on the offensive side, particularly Greg Davis.
Greg Davis is more secure than a New York Public Sector union member who’s a made man in the mob with child porn pictures of his supervisor and 800k in bribes out to the local authorities.

Bates, the problem with this is, if Mack Davis read what you just wrote, he would intimate that you are suggesting we hire the fired ST coach in order to fix our punt return.

A move like that is more than a demonstration of accountability. It is serves as a wider message to subordinates (players) and peers (assistant coaches) that fundamentals cannot be taken lightly.
The problem in Austin is that we are re-building and expectations must of necessity be aligned with that reality. There has been no great break down of the O in any given game. Afterall, the QB stats are pretty much in line with previous RS Freshmen QBs at Texas and there have been no blow-outs or shut-outs. If not for defensive penalties we might have won last Saturday.

It is happening in other places:
Pros:
Jimmy Raye out as 49ers offensive coordinator
Colleges:
BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall will resume his former job as the Cougars’ defensive coordinator after firing assistant Jaime Hill on Saturday
But it won’t happen here. Certainly not during the season.

Ha. Either way I messed it up. It should have read, “they” rather than “he.” Had I been going for the singer it should have been “Mac.”
stuck: Aggies would trade their taxidermy degrees in a heart beat for RC’s success, after years of wanting him gone. The pasture is alway greener…..
Of course in our case, it is. Maybe.

Not at all. I am just as tired of GD as anyone else. I am trying to see it from MB’s and even Deloss Dodd’s perspectives. There has to be some sanity here in Blogsville, Texas.

Can we all envision having our very own “Torbush” in our daily conversations?
“Man, my boss just pulled a Greg Davis.” (in reference to a presentation that was trounced by his opponents).
“That was so Greg Davis.” (used in friendship context when your buddy does something that makes no sense).

Can you imagine how much of a discipline and morale problem it is this week; Muschamp running and disciplining JJ, Eddie Jones, and others for their penalties; whilst repeat offenders on the offensive side of the ball are praised and coddled by Davis and Co.?
I seriously think that the team is about to get away from mack based on the different standards being enforced on opposite sides of the ball. Eventually Muschamp will lose his guys too, which we may have seen last week.
An insider told me off the record (in email form), that “the rest of the team has noticed the differnet standards expected and enforced for the OL compared to the rest of the team”. He was afraid to post that on OBs due to the backlash, but is considered one of their most tied in “insiders”.

GD is a moron – Any success that Greg Davis has enjoyed as an offensive coordinator has come as a result of “I pulled a Homer (Simpson)” moments. (“Pull a Homer”: to succeed despite idiocy). The more Vince Youngs and Colt McCoys you have, the more “I pulled a Homer” moments you get to enjoy as a coach.
And so what if Whistling drives a maroon SUV with a 12th Man bumper sticker. It proves NOTHING!!!!
by North Dallas 40 on Oct 5, 2010 1:49 PM CDT reply actions
If course there hasn’t been any great break down of the offense in any of our games. You have to be rolling and moving for something to break down. Or offense never gets started.

The extent to which different coaching standards are being applied on different sides of the ball and the effect on overall team cohesion could end up being the great unreported story of 2010. The potential for this kind of split can be found in pretty much any setting where people look to their superiors to guide and justify their own ass-busting work while looking to their counterparts to have their back. I can’t recall a previous scenario under Mack where the contrast was this stark.
Beyond runs and tackles, I find that these kinds of scenarios compel me to follow what happens with team performance as much as anything.

What do you mean different standards? Greg is punishing Monroe, hell he won’t even let DJ take a peek at the playbook.

I think the comparison of GD/Mack to RC Slocum is apt, except Slocum was even less successful than Mack Brown has been. We have ONE bad start, in a year that’s obviously a rebuilding year, and people are screaming for the coaches to be shown the door?
The criticism of the double standard is perfectly valid, but at this point, if you don’t expect it to be noticed and addressed by the coaches (if a bit later than we’d like), you just haven’t been paying attention to the way Mack runs this program.
And if you really want someone else to be our coach… well, be careful what you wish for.

Rimbo -
I too feel like some of the fans are getting ahead of themselves. Yes, it’s a rebuilding year. Yes, there are a lot of unproven commodities. Yes, it’s been a bad start.
But the fact is – the offense has shown NO progress. If anything, it’s regressed. You can’t help but feel that the coaches have no idea what direction to go with this offense, and they’re waiting for a player to step up and break out, instead of helping the players find their niche and comfort zone. But when you change schemes and key players every game, it’s hard to build off of any kind of foundation.
They’re throwing dog shit at a wall to see what sticks, and it’s bouncing off and landing all over the coaches. The problem is, the coaches aren’t ask themselves, “Hey, what smells?”
by TXinDC on Oct 5, 2010 3:12 PM CDT reply actions
Well said Rimbo. Hell, I heard some idiot this morning claiming that the defensive performance vs. OU shows that Muschamp has lost his edge. Spoiled brats rule!

dood – I can’t offer a detailed answer to your question. I don’t know. What is obvious though is the difference in coaching styles between DC and OC, and it’s not a big stretch to imagine how deep those differences run into various facets while creating disparate team bearings. Right now, a real split may only amount to potential and could evaporate with some competent showings and team wins. The alternative could get a little hairy.

To extend upon your analogy, even when the dogshit happens to stick — DJ runs 60 yds untouched to cut the lead to a single possession – they reach for another turd.

“dood – I can’t offer a detailed answer to your question.”
I was being sarcastic.
Seriously, I think the game has passed GD by. The “difference in coaching styles between DC and OC” may be largely attributable to comfort and age. You spend a decade in the top 20 and coach two of the best QBs in school history, you get lazy.
by dood on Oct 5, 2010 3:23 PM CDT reply actions
Similar to how the offense would have to be rolling in order for it to break down, wouldn’t GD have had to be ahead of the game at some point for it to pass him by?
A ray of light leaving from the game wouldn’t reach GD for two or three years.
by nobis60 on Oct 5, 2010 4:16 PM CDT reply actions
You may be right that the game’s passed GD by, dood. And I say that as someone who strongly believes that GD doesn’t deserve 99% of the criticisms thrown his way, as someone who thinks that even the educated criticisms of GD fail to take into account the constraints under which he has to operate.
It does sometimes seem he’s running an offense that’s long been figured out by defenses. Once in a while I see brilliance in a gameplan — e.g., the play-action pass out of the zone read against tOSU in 2005, or lining up Shipley in the slot against OU in 2008 — but the opening offensive plays against OU had me facepalming so hard I bruised my skull.
Well, we’ll see.

Disagree. Fail. Shipley in the slot was an accidental discovery that followed an injury to our starting TE. It worked because, well, Shipley is Shipley and because Venables stupidly and stubbornly covered the slot with an LB. Love Mack, but Greg Davis has to go.
