I’m a hardcore state of Texas football loyalist. That was instilled in me by my grandfather who played baseball at TCU. Root for the Texas team playing the OOS team every time or you’re a communist. I’m not sure you could combine the rosters and coaching staffs of UT, A&M and Tech to beat any program in Oklahoma. We’re getting our ass kicked by Colorado right now.

Talk, talk, talk, talk. . .yap, yap, yap. Mack needs to STFU and quit talking. He should have been this way after the piss poor perfoamnce against Wyoming. He needs to stare at the mirror and decide if he has it and whether loyalty to Greg Davis is worth it. The whole offense staff needs to be cleaned out, but at the very least Davis, McWhorter, and Kenedy need to be gone year end. I would just as soon as take my chances with Muschamp than see Mack come back with Davis. They’ll probably beat Baylor next week and then turn around and get prison raped in Manhattan the following week. The most frustrating thing is this is a lost year. I’d bench every senior on the offensive line, get Case McCoy some SERIOUS playing time, put Darius White on the field full time with Mike Davis and DJ Monroe. If your going to suck and rebuild, at least find out what you’ve got for next year.

That won’t happen because the “family man” style he uses in recruiting so well translates into babying guys that play with no passion or intensity. Mack doesn’t want to hurt any of his players feelings, but he doesn’t seem to mind ripping the hearts out of Texas fans.

Ooooh, Mack is pissed! Muschamp better look out! When Mack gets pissed the DC gets the hammer! This loss represents a typical effort for this team. Last week was clearly a huge anomaly. That the team played well last week and so poorly in every other game speaks volumes I think. This team has no pride in itself or in what they are trying to do. Last week vs Nebraska was different. The players had heard all year about how Nebraska pointed to that game, so the Longhorn players took it personally. Their pride was engaged. But that has not been true any other game. My god, if you don’t have the pride to defend your own house against f’ing Iowa State, then you won’t defend your pride or your honor at all. Iowa State was supposed to be an easy game. So the team coasted. No pride in accomplishment, IMO. Why pride at Nebraska? INTERNAL motivation. Every other game: NO internal motivation. This team has not been motivated except in one game all year. I don’t see any changes coming in that, either.
So what is wrong?
I think this is a team divided against itself. I don’t necessarily mean offense vs defense. I think it is more complicated than that. Something is going on under the surface that we are not seeing except in the resulting abysmal level of play. For players to have so little confidence in themselves or in what they are doing is partly the result of a lack of natural leaders, but that’s only a small factor. Clearly, the coaches bear by far the lion’s share of responsibility for the health of a team’s psyche. It’s not a matter of execution. If the players were motivated to play better, they would do so. Texas still has more talent than every opponent they face this year. No. The problem is that the players have no faith or expectation that harder effort will be rewarded with better results. The leaders are not in place to right this situation. And the coaches are helpless because the players have no faith in them anymore. It might be a different situation on the defense with Muschamp, but there is a general malaise affecting the whole team, including the defense.
This season is toast. Next year could be just as bad if systemic changes are not effected soon.
Coaches, approach, attitudes, the works. This is not just Mack Brown’s worst team. This is his worst job of coaching. In YEARS.
I’m not ready to jettison Mack, but it seems he has coasted, too, on recent success.
Any improvements will only come in the offseason.
Now. Go prove me wrong, Mack. Please.

We need a new coach like Oregon’s, TCU’s, or Boise’s. Coaches who can maximize the talent we have. I’m not a Offensive Coordinator, but I know to get to the end zone you have to attack the field vertically. All I see is side ways catch the ball from a stand still position and get shit for yards. Greg Davis is a stupid fucking bubble screen lover. Does not know how to utilize the speed we have. Do we ever run slants to hit a speedster in full stride? I would not blame Muschamp if he left, and I wouldn’t blame Malcom Brown if he decomitted because Davis can’t orchestrate a running game. Why would Muschamp want to stay working at Texas with Greg Davis there too.

There was some talk on postgame radio, comparing these losses to those of the Akers era circa 1985 or so. Fucking bullshit, because we didn’t recruit for shit back then. We were basically Baylor at that point, in that we were losing out to a&m, smu, houston, notre dame, and everyone else for anyone worth a shit.
We’re really bad right now, and we’re really bad with the cream of the crop of the best players that WE SELECT. We don’t really recruit anymore, we select.

Had to listen on XM since Dish and Fox are in a pissing match and I’m in Florida. I knew we were in trouble when I heard that it was 3rd and 3 and we completed a pass short of the first down. Only Greg Davis is capable of that level of asshattery.
by jinx on Oct 23, 2010 4:24 PM CDT reply actions
Nordberg, agree but afraid that is precisely where we’re headed. First you have these types of games fairly regularly, then recruiting starts to slide and once it does it does so quickly and you end up with ths same scheme run by shittier players. Then it gets really bad. The time for wholesale change is right fucking now while we still have talent for a new staff to take advantage of.

Important note — LSU’s offense is terrible; its defense has held Auburn to 17 points. That’s what a great defense will do. We do not have a great defense.
As for the rest of the team, it’s going to be hard to keep my give a shit level up. I’ll watch, because that’s what I do. But I’m so far beyond frustrated. Our tackles (including hopkins) were completely pantsed today. Our receivers were putrid, again. Our inside line play was OK, but our defense let us fall behind so quickly, and our play callling is so random, that we never really tried to run the ball. Our personnel packages make no fucking sense — putting Williams, Kirkendoll, and Chiles on the fiels at the same time is as dumb as EVER playing Smith or Matthews. We finally ran some two-back sets, but we didn’t do anything with them.
Our kickoff coverage is hilariously bad. As soon as we had a little bit of momentum we’d give it right back with a stupid special teams play.
Our defense cannot stop the run. Just can’t. And today, neither our linebackers nor our safeties could cover anyone. On top of that, we couldn’t sack Arnaud. Piss-poor from the defense, either because they are whiny bitches who lay down because the offense sucks or because they didn;t show up ready to play a motivated team and got worked.

The biggest problem Texas has defending the run at times is quite simple. They have one defensive tackle on the roster capable of making a positive contribution on a regular basis.
Consider this list. A.Jones (dumbass), J. Humphrey (bad luck), D. Johnson (dumbass), Higgins ( too light) C Howell (not sure exactly what is the issue here).
None of the three freshmen were able to rekindle the first year magic we saw from Wright, Okam, or Miller. Okafor plays hard but is too light and the defense would be much more solid against the run if Alex was out at DE and the Horns had two decent defensive tackles.
The offensive problems are a bit more extensive.

by Homesick Alien on Oct 23, 2010 6:19 PM CDT reply actions
Davey, I keep coming back to the point that a lot of really smart people make: Muschamp has had 2 years to stock his defense with the kind of players he wants. In the meantime, he’s had to jury-rig to make up for areas where our recruiting has been deficient and/or we’ve had really tremendously shitty luck – as you observe, the DT spot is the primary area.
I’d argue the same applies to the safety spot.
Our CBs are OK, and our DEs are lights out. LBs are getting there, but we’re young (again, a function of shitty recruiting prior to his arrival).
Davis has had his run of the place as it applies to talent procurement, strategic and tactical approach, and input into S&C. He knows that when Mack gets mad at him, all he has to do is stall for a bit before Mack gets bored or distracted and lets Davis go back to doing whatever he was doing before. He knows now that he’s gotten into that glorious zone where no one expects shit out of you so anything you do that shows a pulse of innovation or competence gets you lavish praise, like a kid with Down’s discovering how to tie his own shoes. YOU WIN GREGGY HERE IS YOUR ICE CREAM AND TROPHY AND BASEBALL FRANKS AND BEANS.
And now you see that your D counterpart is getting blasted ever more frequently and vehemently for not running out a completely perfect unit, which just provides you even more cover.
Life is fucking good if you’re Greg Davis.

DT is definitely what keeps this defense from becoming elite. This year’s freshman class and next year’s recruits hopefully will solve that gap.
As bad as the QB, RBs and receivers have looked, a solid OL can minimize their mediocrity. While the sophomore class and next year’s recruits would appear to provide some bodies, I’m not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel there.

CJD,
I agree. Texas has had a few reaches on the defensive side of the ball, but I do believe the biggest overall threat to the defense recruiting wise is Mack’s insistence to make recruiting decisions based upon junior year and camp performances. I won’t bring up something I have beaten to death on Recuitoscom but there is a bit of that in the 2011 class at a critical position.
Offensively though I am not sure how Mack can’t see what a cluster fuck has taken place on the offensive side of the ball. I won’t beat the staff up for opting not to offer Luck because they had set their sites on Gilbert the next year. They can’t be held accountable for some of the bad luck, they can be held accountable for the collection of mismanaged parts on offense, and the inability to be honest in what this team can and can’t do on offense and build from that point.

To sum it up as quickly and painlessly as I can:
Offense: When they were on the ISU 3, third and goal, and down 14-3, I realized that in the seventh game of the season, they have no play that they can run and be sure they will gain three yards. The most reliable running play is a QB scramble.
Defense: After that field goal, you need to get a stop, but you give up a 104-yard touchdown drive (89 + 15 in penalties).
ISU was motivated and made plays. Texas didn’t.

A look at how our Offensive positions are coached:
QB – Scary bad. GG has no pocket awareness or touch. It’s like when he sees an open receiver, he gets so excited he shoots his load when throwing the ball to them. Someone needs to coach GG to use “touch” and “feel” when playing QB. Feel sorry for his girlfriend.
WR – Bad. I’m torn because we obviously don’t run good routes and that is coaching. But, our hands suck and I don’t blame coaching for that. The thing that makes this a bad coaching job also lies with ZERO downfield blocking. For those that understand this term, all you need to know when we run routes is that we’re still “milking the cow”. Pathetic.
OL – Scary bad. You have to coach your unit to its strength. This unit has no strengths and THAT is on coaching. Find out what your guys can do well. Even if it’s holding. Then use that to build from. Power, Zone Read… who cares? Just put a hat on someone!!!
RB – OK. These guys don’t miss assignments and generally can be counted on. Problem is they have NO talent. They can catch better than our receivers so obviously they work on something at practice.

Pocket presence isn’t something you can teach. You either have it or you don’t much like touch on throwing a pass or the speed at which you recognize holes in a defense. GD might be a bad co-ordinator, but I think a case can be made that both Vince and Colt did improve over time in terms of the mechanics of the position.
Anyone see Bama – Tennessee last night? Watching Simms trying to force that pass in the redzone cause flashbacks and is a perfect example of what I am referring to in regards to the intrinsic things about the position that can’t be taught.
