Texas-Baylor Open Thread
If we can stop Dave Bliss from framing us, we may have a chance. Yes, we may lose this game, but we'll always win on the scoreboard of mockery.

Anyone else surprised Huck’s projection has us favored to win?

A little.
But Baylor’s defense grades out pretty poorly and we’ve shown the ability to make high flying offenses underperform significantly.
by Scipio Tex on Oct 30, 2010 12:33 PM CDT reply actions
I think we win 21-20, but we could easily lose. I still can’t believe we’ve arrived at a point where we lose to Iowa State at home and are afraid of what Baylor might do to us.

I have no confidence about today’s events. Dave Bliss owns Mack Brown.
by maninblack on Oct 30, 2010 1:02 PM CDT reply actions
It is a win-win situation for us: if we win the game, we don’t endure humiliation from Baylor fans, if we lose, more fire under Mack Brown. Seriously – I just want to see some heads roll…

I’m watching Miami lose to Virginia with its fourth-string quarterback. I don’t think Texas has a fourth-string quarterback.

Reminds me of the last years of Akers’ tenure. I was loving watch Iowa run up the score because I was hoping it would be a catalyst for change. It took one more year. In the long run we might be better off losing tonight

I am not saying that I disagree with you, Alan, but I think that Akers may be a poor example. It got a lot worse after he left.

Could we really lose to ISU and Baylor at home on consecutive weekends? That seems utterly incomprehensible given that we played for the BCS championship in January.

Also Nebraska can be game planned. They sell out and over commit quite often on defense as evidenced by the first Mizzou td.

"I can’t believe we beat Nebraska"
I don’t believe we did. I believe Nebraska beat themselves. The dropped TD passes (three or four of ‘em) cost them a net of around 22 points. Boom’s plan to stop the run and make them pass worked, but I’m not sure the drops were caused by anything other than their own over-worked adrenal glands choking them.

I’m certain that Texas will either get the ball or kick it off to start the game.
Other than that, I have no freaking idea what to expect from this team. Not sure what to expect from the fans either. It’s a good thing they’re retiring Colt’s jersey BEFORE the game, and not at halftime. If we’re trailing, or just playing bad, it could be an ugly stadium.

I hate to even think this, but Cam Newton might be as good as Vince was. He just made a hell of a catch for a TD. Next, they’re going to put him in at DT to shore up the middle of the defense. Then, they’ll let him try a 62 yard field goal. Which he’ll make. Hooboy.
And from the “It could be worse” department: Tulsa 28, Notre Dame 27.
Hook ’em!!!
by EyesOfTX on Oct 30, 2010 5:12 PM CDT reply actions
Cam Newton just ran a sweep left for 30 yards then went up into the stands and delivered a baby from a co-ed that went into labor upon seeing Cam.
Cam then handed the football to the beaming mom and threw the baby 50 yards for an Auburn TD.
And the crowd goes wild.

Watching Florida/Georgia. Literally every effective offensive play by either team is a play I have never seen us run. Ah, yes… the good ol’ “we dropped passes too, so it all evens out” canard takes flight.
Dropping passes has been one of the relatively sure things about our offense all year, and we didn’t disappoint in Lincoln.
Nebraska, on the other hand, flat-out choked. They have a considerably history of doing that when they play us, and this year was no different.
Here’s where we can agree: we won the game. Saying that we “beat” them… well, that’s gonna depend on how you define “beat”, I reckon.

by EyesOfTX on Oct 30, 2010 5:48 PM CDT reply actions
The idea that the Nebraska win “doesn’t count” is total bullshit. We won, they lost. Even if they catch two more TDs you have no idea what the outcome would have been.

If NU catches those two dropped 1st half TDs, we probably keep trying to score in the 2nd half. As it was, Mack sat on a two TD lead for the last 30 minutes of the game, making no effort at all to score points. This is a pointless argument.

The offense we were running in the first half against NEB was not a high risk offense. We have an offense with very little confidence. Scoring another 7 or 14 would not be running up the score. It would be good football, and it would be a way to give a schizophrenic offense some identity.

Every game this season, except for Nebraska, the opposing team has been psyched and ready and willing to play while we’ve been flatter than the top of Elizabeth Hasselbeck’s head. You can see it in the way Finley runs best of all in this game. Our guys, on the other hand, look like they don’t want to be there at all, and if they somehow happen into making a good play then it’s time for bottle service in the Champagne Room. The coaching is abysmal, the play-calling cringe-inducing, the decision-making laughable.
Curtis Brown makes the biggest WTF play on a punt I think I’ve ever seen, and he’s right back out there on the next punt. Gilbert plays like a dog that’s been beat too much, to quote The Man. We leave Gideon in position to make a full-body Ole with less than a minute to go in the half. It’s all quite breathtaking.
You are killing my relationship with football, Mack.

Halftime stats update.
Baylor’s offense averages 7.3 YPP gained on the season. In this game, they’re averaging 5.2. In other words, the Texas D is holding Baylor 29% below their season average.
Baylor’s defense yields an average of 5.2 YPP this season. In this game, they’ve yielded 4.2. In other words, the Texas O is gaining 21% less than Baylor allowed to its average opponent.
So, nothing unusual. The Texas D is doing its job. The Texas O is fucking up.

Just checking in…
- They are attacking our safeties, as I thought.
- D is handling a dangerous guy well, otherwise. I’ll concede some Finley runs to overplay RGIII
On O
- Gilbert’s runs are everything to this offense – the GD offense requires it. Only way we can punish Cover Two. Threat, Duel. Need.
- Believe it or not, GD had some solid play calls that our players fucked him on – namely Kirkendoll and Matthews. Chicken-egg, right? We don’t practice real offense, we haven’t repped it, so it’s Game 8 that’s our first live reps doing some of these things.

by scott on Oct 30, 2010 9:00 PM CDT reply actions
Eyes, Chiles didn’t convert that third down, but he did some things a lot better than our other receivers:
1) He ran PAST THE STICK on his route.
2) He did NOT commit a pass interference penalty.
3) He had the ball in his hands, and he almost caught it.
4) After failing to catch it, he made sure to drop it down, not allowing the defense to intercept it, and allowing us to punt the ball away.
The fourth point is the key one, you really have to play field position when you are down ONLY FOUR to baylor at home in the 4th quarter, IMO.

Blatant favoritism shown to players and coaches who obviously don’t deserve it can be a cancer on a team. Wonder if that’s what is going on behind the scenes.

It’s starting to get more and more obvious that maybe Mack needs to just hand the reins to Boom and go be an announcer on GameDay.
It’s painfully obvious that zero coaching has gone into this team. Mistakes happen. Sometimes players don’t have the experience or aren’t that talented. But to consistently make the same mistakes, not make adjustments, and have no clear plan going into games? Pathetic.

Mack spent the whole offseason mailing it in and telling everyone who could listen that he was “worried about this team.” That’s called conditioning the response to a failure of your own making. What a clusterfuck, and the blame lays at Mack’s feet.
I say send him packing. It’s time for a new regime.

I can only see one more win left on the schedule, this team is the worse than the 96,97 teams.. A. Williams will be out 2-3 weeks with that nasty concussion and the defense loses one of its best players..
Will Mack be around another year is the question? Does a multi million dollar year coach get a pass on a losing season? Never, I’ll take 3-4 loses in a rebuilding year but we aren’t stoping at 4… This team is losing 6 games guaranteed.

Baylor you got it. Losing last week was worst loss since rice in 97. Losing this week makes it worse than 97. And the situation cannot be fixed. It is over. The program doesn’t have the scheme to ever be a contender. Just turn on the Oregon game. Even USC is miles ahead of us. They actually look like a TEAM. And Oregon? Please. We would never compete.
I don’t know what TPTB will do, but there is no denying that major major changes need to be made.

But fuck, Baylor and Iowa State in the same fucking year? Is this a bad dream?
I don’t see any way that the team just doesn’t give up at this point and lose every single one from here on out. 5-7 is likely and 4-8 is a distinct possibility.

Mack has earned one but shit has to change day one post season, which will be early.
Management 101 says we tend to stick to what we do best in times of stress. Guess Mack is focusing on recruiting instead of assistant coaches. Probably will be at season end as well without strong prompt.
