A question for the bored, err, board.
If 2010 Texas played 1997 Texas, who would win?
Don't forget to show your work.

Ricky Williams would bend over the 2010 defense and have his way with them.
Our 2010 offense is too inept to score even on the stiffs on the 97 defense. Dusty Renfro and Aaron Humphrey go wild on our offensive line.

Who would win?
Oklahoma and Aggie fans who want to revel in the Burnt Orange carnage.

The 1997 Longhorns. Their undoing was defense and if we can get shut out by the 120th ranked defense the ’97 defense can hold us to enough points to win.

I’m pretty sure that when anti-matter and it-don’t-matter collide nobody wins.
by Texoz on Nov 8, 2010 7:22 AM CST reply actions
Tres Leches nailed it on the first reply. Not much more to say. The 1997 team would win by about 35-14.
Hook ’em!!!

I agree. Even the 1997 team knew how to watch film and scout. Erick Lynne Williams would run right up whatever hole wasn’t occupied by Kheeston Randall and blast this defense for 6-7 yards a pop until breaking one and going to the house. It worked for UCLA, Iowa State, Baylor, and KSU (I just died a little inside) and none of those teams have a Heisman winning running back.
Now, if the 2010 team could score 3-4 TD’s a game, maybe the fighting Mackovics would have to throw every once in a while and play to the 2010 defense’s strength, but then we wouldn’t be having this discussion, either.
Our current offense would struggle against Lee Junior High’s 8th grade at this point and that’s the root of all of our problems, except maybe the muffed punt nonsense.

Agree with Tres Leches; as mediocre as that 1997 defense was, it was better than our last 3 opponents. And if we couldn’t stop Daniel Thomas, Ricky Williams would have a field day.

Just to confirm here, we are pining for the good ’ole days of 1997, right? This thread makes me sad.
by WanderingHorn on Nov 8, 2010 7:35 AM CST reply actions
My only issue with the responses so far is that you guys are assuming that 1997 John Mackovic would continue to pound the defense with Ricky Williams. We have historical evidence that this is not the case.
1997 John Mackovic would attempt to prove his genius by throwing the ball against the 2010 Texas defense. It would be a clash of idiotic playcalling. There’s no telling what happens at that point.
by Huckleberry on Nov 8, 2010 7:36 AM CST reply actions
But Huck, you are forgetting that we the one ringer on the 2010 squad that would assure victory for the Mackovic’s….Greg Davis. That intangible in and of itself virtually guarantees a ’97er win.
by TXStampede on Nov 8, 2010 7:46 AM CST reply actions
Huck is right, we lost to Baylor because we (Mackovic) refused to ride Ricky Williams at the end of a close game. Ricky was pretty much putting up 200 yards per game, so he would get 250-300 easy against this defense. If the 1997 defense could get a few picks (Quentin Jammer, Greg Brown) it would be a runaway.

Don’t know, but Nebraska still wouldn’t.

I just considered our unsafeties trying to tackle Ricky Williams.
I laughed. I drank some coffee, and I laughed again.
by BEHorn on Nov 8, 2010 8:36 AM CST reply actions
Huck – if you contend that ‘10 Brown might hang in because ’97 Mackovic might not “pound Williams”, then you’re assuming that Ricky would need more than 12 carries to pick up 240 yards and 3 TDs vs our present D. I do not share that assumption.

Remember the OU game that year, where we beat a terrible sooner team 27-24 or something? It would look a lot like that.

When was the last time we put up stats like these?
1997 University of Texas Football
Texas Overall Individual Statistics (as of Jun 13, 2007)
All games
RUSHING GP Att Gain Loss Net Avg TD Long Avg/G
-——————————————————————————————-
Ricky Williams 11 279 1975 82 1893 6.8 25 87 172.1
More than 25 rushing attempts per game is hardly giving up on Ricky and moving to the passing game. Our leading rusher in per game yardage is performing at a rate 21.2% of Ricky’s average.

I would like to see Blake Gideon talk shit to Ricky after Ricky rolls him on a 50 yard TD run.

Who do I hate more? 1997 Huckleberry or 2010 Huckleberry?
by HenryJames on Nov 8, 2010 9:11 AM CST reply actions
Trick question.
A Mackovic defense colliding with a Davis offense would obviously destroy the space-time continuum resulting in the destruction of the entire universe.

From the perspective of our fanbase:
Chris Simms:Major Applewhite::Garrett Gilbert:Case McCoy
Any chance of a new quarterback controversy?
by HenryJames on Nov 8, 2010 10:19 AM CST reply actions
No…Major had already proven himself worthy, and was unseated by fame and the need to get a top recruit some playing time.
Case has not proven himself, and Gilbert is showing signs of mental weakness.
The current situation is much more sad. At least in the Applewhite debacle we knew we had a good QB on the other side of the controversy. Right now the only thing we know is that Case would also be capable of throwing 5 INTs.

The 97 defense was awfully slow. When ever I think of that team I see Chris Carter chasing the ball carrier from behind. And HE actually got drafted in to the NFL.
One thing these teams have in common is internal strife. I remember hearing players say they couldn’t stand the sight of Machovic, much less hearing his maniac foamy mouthed coach speak. They truly hated the coaches on that staff.
We may not know the real story on this 2010 team until the season is over and the dust settles. Therefore I give them the edge over the 97 team. We don’t know yet if 2010 has anything left.
by Mocking Bird on Nov 8, 2010 10:48 AM CST reply actions
Carter wasn’t on the 97 team. He, like Thomas, Westbrook, and Allen, were all gone after 1996.
by hpslugga on Nov 8, 2010 11:31 AM CST reply actions
I for one would pick the 2010 team.
My Work:
Other than the few players still in the NFL, those other ‘97 guys are like 34 years old, way out of shape and haven’t played competitive football in over a decade. Plus Mackovic hasn’t coached in like 7 years (granted G Davis hasn’t coached for much of that time either) unless you count the American Football World Cup team. Hell, even our bubble screen might work against a bunch of fat middle aged guys. Granted, it would still be close.
Oh, did you mean the ‘97 team in it’s prime? Then ’97 all the way-they could at least score a decent number of points.
by tdwalsh on Nov 8, 2010 11:37 AM CST reply actions
hpslugga – Correct. I think he left and got drafted in the 2nd by the Seahawks

They’re both bad. The 2010 team almost always manages to beat themselves, but the 97 team just plain got beat.
With better talent top to bottom, I give the edge to the 2010 team.

Total protonic reversal. There’s definitely a very slim chance that we’d survi….errr….win?

“With better talent top to bottom, I give the edge to the 2010 team.”
Not to be overly argumentative here, but other than possibly OU, which team we’ve lost to this season had equal or better talent to the 2010 Texas team?
Hook ’em!!!
by EyesOfTX on Nov 8, 2010 1:44 PM CST reply actions
I really think you have to specify which point in these seasons you mean.
Right now, for instance, the defense is grotesquely demoralized, convinced the offense cannot win games, and barely trying as a result. They just want to get through games without being too badly embarrassed.
Earlier in the year, they’d have done a far better job against WIlliams and Co.
by Louis L'am Jones on Nov 8, 2010 2:24 PM CST reply actions
1. At this point, a more apt analogy may be
Garrett Gilbert:Case McCoy::Shannon Kelly:Mark Murdock
(Not fair to Case McCoy, as he has no track record yet, but neither of these guys hold Simms/Applewhite’s jock)
2. 1997 team would stomp this 2010 team because they could easily outscore them. The chablis would be flowing in Johnny Mack land.
by AusTXHorn on Nov 8, 2010 3:07 PM CST reply actions
The 1997 team matches up well against the 2010 team. Our defense is weakest against the run. Ricky would slice through 2010 Texas.
The 2010 offense is just a clusterfuck of awfulness. I never thought I’d ever see a Mack Brown unit that was worse than any of Mackovic’s defenses, but that’s where we are.
Yeah, maybe Mackovic outsmarts himself. Or maybe 2010 has a bye week and concocts some sucker-punch scheme like it did for the Nebraska game. But, setting those impossible-to-predict variables aside, the personnel / unit strength match-up strongly favors the 1997 team.
I think 97 wins, and the game isn’t even close.
