Dana Holgorsen Walks Out Of A Bar...

...and runs into Big XII ESPN Uber-Blogbot David St Ubbens. Lucky for us he draws up a play. I hope Will Muschamp has some Internet in his office!

Star-divide

Seriously, kind of cool:

Anyway, I love this mad bastard. He looks like Leach must have been in town the night before and he rolled in to the interview straight from closing down the Tumbleweed Ballroom. Fantastic. He has cool plays and Johnny Cash's wardrobe. I want to hit the town with this guy and Dave Yost.

Of course, ESPN already hung out with Greg Davis early in the year, back in the salad days before the losses started piling up.

ACE did his usual good work here:

Wow that’s a genius play. Has Greg even discovered QB option designs like that yet?

by Blake B on Nov 10, 2010 11:50 AM CST reply actions

You are right. He gets it and I can see him swimming in coeds. Hunter S Thompson would like him.

by Argus on Nov 10, 2010 11:53 AM CST reply actions

I’m going to take a flyer here and bet that Holgorsen has several play options that are structured off of that same formation & play action.

Tricky bastard.

I would have loved to have seen GD draw up our “bring Cody in on 3rd and short and give it to him in the shotgun” play.

by The Mad Clapper on Nov 10, 2010 12:08 PM CST reply actions

I’m fascinated by his hair. Not the most blessed set of locks ever, but he just rocks it out. We need some of that confidence at UT.

by Nero on Nov 10, 2010 12:08 PM CST reply actions

Dana likes him some coeds.

Kudos on “David St. Ubbens”! Clever!

This will be Okie State’s first play from scrimmage on Saturday.

by Vasherized on Nov 10, 2010 12:22 PM CST reply actions

I assume chasing ass is one of the perks of his job.

by EnglishAg on Nov 10, 2010 12:36 PM CST reply actions

Rumor has it he’s been renting and Stillwater and has yet to actually sign his contract with OSU. Assuming that rumor is not complete BS, maybe he’s not sold on a life in Stillwater? Lot more talent in Austin than Stillwater (I’m not talking about the football rosters, obviously).

We steal him, get better, maybe make OSU worse, and poke T Boone in the eye. Win-win-win.

What manner of wizardry is this that a play would have multiple options and attack defensive tendency?

by Scipio Tex on Nov 10, 2010 12:58 PM CST reply actions

We call him… Tim.

I notice the play he diagrammed attacked the backer and not the safety. Perhaps there is a chance Saturday.

Brilliant!

by maninblack on Nov 10, 2010 1:09 PM CST reply actions

The old “wrong ball trick” the coach of the defense there should be shot.

by roach on Nov 10, 2010 1:10 PM CST reply actions

If there isn’t a wide receiver screen involved in this play, I’m not interested.

by BatesHorn on Nov 10, 2010 1:11 PM CST reply actions

Hmmm I’m puzzled, I don’t understand how Holgorsen gets the defense moving sideline to sideline on a play like that?

by roach on Nov 10, 2010 1:18 PM CST reply actions

He’s sort of like Tommy Smothers had his mom loved him better than his brother. I kept waiting for him to laugh at his own cleverness.

I think I want this guy as a life coach rather than an offensive coach.

Unsound football, of course. Odd shit like pump fakes.

by Levander Williams on Nov 10, 2010 1:30 PM CST reply actions

He’ll be auditioning for us on Saturday like Cliff Lee auditioned for the Yankees a couple of weeks ago.

by GigoloJoe on Nov 10, 2010 1:45 PM CST reply actions

Greg will scratch his head trying to figure out why Orie Lemon and James Thomas aren’t doing what Dana said they would do on the board.

by dedfischer on Nov 10, 2010 1:55 PM CST reply actions

That play won’t work – there’s no receiver running a route to the sideline or taking some steps backwards to receive the ball.

by Hooked on Nov 10, 2010 1:56 PM CST reply actions

I don’t know about the contract situation but I know he’s living in a hotel room. It might be the Holiday Inn off 51. It’s new!

We’re all hoping we get one more season out of the guy before he becomes a head coach somewhere.

by Ibas water bottle on Nov 10, 2010 4:48 PM CST reply actions

Iba: just make him Head Coach in Waiting…that will lock him up until 2025!

by GigoloJoe on Nov 10, 2010 5:18 PM CST reply actions

Obviously I don’t know about every situation but it seems to me that the head coach in waiting idea fails far more often that it works out. Especially in places where the current head coaches remaining time is undefined.

That type of setup has to result in an awkward work environment, and besides we tried that in basketball with the Suttons. Even if Gundy was pushing retirement age I doubt Holder would be willing to do it again.

by Ibas water bottle on Nov 10, 2010 5:38 PM CST reply actions

Ibas, sarcasm brother. Hang around here long enough and you’ll see. I’m very envious of your team this year. Damn, did I just say I’m envious of OSU?

by Holy Cow on Nov 10, 2010 6:09 PM CST reply actions

and livin’ with it.

by floridianhorn on Nov 10, 2010 6:15 PM CST reply actions

Oh I know it was sarcasm. Couldn’t help sharing my thoughts though. We’re doing well but Saturday is going to suck when Mike Gundy calls for the FG down 4 with 1:27 to go in the game. We haven’t lost like that yet, so we’re due.

by Ibas water bottle on Nov 10, 2010 6:23 PM CST reply actions

What are the chances we give him a call at the end of this season?

by X on Nov 10, 2010 6:42 PM CST reply actions

Dana sounds a lot like Leach and has Leach’s same mannerisms. Although, Dana play calling has evolved a lot more than Leach, he’s not as stubborn as Leach, and he’s more creative.

Maybe Dana can hire Leach as his OC after he gets a head coaching job. If T. Boone and Holder were smart they would fire Mike Gundy at the end of the season and give the team to Holgerson.

by Tim on Nov 10, 2010 6:47 PM CST reply actions

We should hire him based on his sense of style alone. Guy is a trail blazer.

by The Mad Clapper on Nov 10, 2010 6:59 PM CST reply actions

If I had the time, I would make a YouTube compilation of every “bubble screen” pass to the wide receiver GDGD has ever called at Texas. Could result in a laughter and tears scenario.

by Colby on Nov 10, 2010 8:20 PM CST reply actions

That was awesome! Dana had comments on almost everyone on the football field. Greggy had two players that mattered. I suppose the rest just do what you want them to do or just “get blocked.”

by jinx on Nov 10, 2010 9:04 PM CST reply actions

He has a little Don Johnson in his voice. I wonder if he coaches with sockless, Italian leather slip-ons.

by P on Nov 11, 2010 10:40 AM CST reply actions

Huh. I’d think the LB has to take the receiver each time—that WR is a threat to make an explosive play. The DT has to slide off the center’s block into the lane where the LG is running around through (or run right behind the LG and hit the RB for loss)…and then the LG has to execute that block on the other LB.

If you’ve been burning that defense with underneath routes all day, and I would have that left flanker run a slant to draw the LB away, that could really increase the chances of the draw working out. The slot receiver’s stick route might be a tipped ball INT waiting to happen.

by CurrentLonghornStudent on Nov 11, 2010 11:06 AM CST reply actions

P.S. I’d appreciate a more informed mind evaluating the play’s merits.

by CurrentLonghornStudent on Nov 11, 2010 11:08 AM CST reply actions

Its a pipe dream to have Dana Holgerson as our OC. Mack’s pride wouldnt allow a guy like that to come in and show what a moron he’s been all these years with elite talent.

by Texas on Nov 11, 2010 1:21 PM CST reply actions

“Huh. I’d think the LB has to take the receiver each time–that WR is a threat to make an explosive play.”

No, no, no, you misunderstand. We’re assuming the team is starting a Division 1 RB, not anyone on the Texas running back depth chart. Other teams have these cool halfbacks that can break tackles, evade defenders, find holes, and run, like, fast. And shit.
