And we're off...

The coaching carousel is heating up with tonight's news of Randy Shannon's firing at Da U.

Star-divide

University of Miami Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt announced the dismissal of Randy Shannon Saturday evening.

“We have made a decision to seek new leadership for our football program,” said Hocutt. “Our expectations are to compete for championships and return to the top of the college football world. We will immediately begin a national search.”

Hocutt will address the media Sunday at 1p.m. Eastern from the Edgerrin James room within the Athletics Department. UM will have no further comment until the press conference Sunday.

The Edgerrin James room? Cool.

Colorado is looking. Everybody get to the Eric Bieniemy room so we can hash this out.

I've also seen a few people say they think Rich Rod is finished in Ann Arbor, though if it happens it may not be official till after January 1st. Jim Harbaugh figures here for obvious reasons. I guess they got over his ridicule of Michigan's lacking academic rigor from a few years back.

Seen Dan McCarney to North Texas rumors.

Minny? Vandy?

Also, with the Dallas Cowboys job open, certainly Lane Kiffin is a frontrunner.

Who else gets the boot? Who ends up where? Let's conjecture about the dominoes capriciously.

Michigan would be a great fit for Shannon. Rodriguez should be on the phone to S Fla right now. Shannon led some great defenses down there and Michigan has an even greater presence in Fla recruiting.

Compare Miami’s evaluation of coaches to the Longhorns’ announced evaluation of coaches.

Miami fired their HC hours after the game. Mack Brown says he’s going to get around to “starting to evaluate” coaches next week. I mean, what the hell has Mack been doing all year, week to week, if not evaluating coaches? What else does he need to evaluate that he hasn’t already seen?

This is a bad sign for Longhorn Nation. It’s easy to hang up 10-win seasons when Nebraska and A&M’s programs are down. But that’s no longer the case. Tho Nebraska is leaving, I see OU on its way to Stoops’s 7th Big 12 title in the last ten years with a young team, I see a young A&M team, I see a young Okie St team, all with returning QBs.

Mack was in the right time at the right place. It is no longer that time. I’m afraid next year will be rough if GD is still around.

It appears that the Miami brass decided that running a clean program with improved graduation rates and essentially no off-field incidents is less desirable after all compared to thuggery, non-graduation, and another game or two in the win column. What a shame. Randy Shannon is a class act and deserves better. I’m sure he’ll resurface somewhere.

Michigan: Rich Rod out? Harbaugh in? Les Miles in?

Stanford: Boise’s Peterson? TCU’s Patterson?

If Les Miles bolts for Michigan, or Mark Richt bolts for Colorado——Muschamp bolts for LSU or Georgia, gets off the Greg Davis Titanic.

by Nostradamus on Nov 27, 2010 11:18 PM CST reply actions

Maybe Miami will contact Greg Davis about their opening.

Harbaugh will get an NFL job – even with the lockout, some owner (Wilf, Adams, Bowlen, 49ers?) will snatch him up for relatively cheap.

This Lester’s time to return to Ann Arbor.

So Randy Shannon is gone after a 7-5 bowl season and Greg Davis is still on our staff. Does that mean that Donna Shalala has more balls than Powers?

by tdwalsh on Nov 27, 2010 11:23 PM CST reply actions

If Mack Brown got a $2 million raise last year for winning his second Big 12 Championship, does it follow that this year he must take a $2 million pay cut for turning in a losing season, no bowl, and no week-to-week fixes or adjustments only ten months after playing for the national championship, one of the biggest dropoffs in college football history?

Guys, the Texas changes are going down in the next few days and we’re all over it.

We should have an article up tomorrow morning naming some names, but here’s the latest update.

Vandy going for broke on Malzahn. Guy could increase his salary 4x and get out from under the Auburn fall. Mullen is a hot name too so he might have MSU after him as well.

Harbaugh found his gold mine in Luck. Follow him to Carolina. Clausen be damned.

Hey – Dumbshits. If you are stupid enough to ask why Mack isn’t going to be fired, this isn’t the board for you. It’s also not a thread to discuss why you think he should be fired.

It’s about actual coaching changes around college football.

If you think Will Muschamp might end up elsewhere, let us know.

How do we like Urban without Tebow??

Interesting that Tebow’s under-performing, immobile, pocket-passer successor, John Brantley, was another Mack-Davis commitment, who de-committed.

Hey Sailor Ripley, who said anything about Mack getting fired/not getting fired?

Inhale…….

by Gus on Nov 28, 2010 12:35 AM CST reply actions

Unfortunately, I think there’s a good chance that Muschamp will leave for the HC gig at either Georgia or LSU; Mack’s reluctance to take action during the season has proven that both Brown and Dodds are loyal to a fault. If I’m Muschamp’s agent, then I would emphasize the fact the Texas is all in with Brown.

Sailor, if Boom leaves are we in the Fifth Circle of Hell?

The news on Searels, if true, means WM is a virtual lock to stay. It also might mean Greg Davis might stay too. Shit.

by sizzlechest on Nov 28, 2010 1:03 AM CST reply actions

Miami—Mike Stoops or Mullen
Michigan—Harbaugh
Colorado—RichRod
Stanford—Troy Calhoun
Air Force—Tim DeRuyter

I believe in the Jesus, so I think Muschamp stays. Also, I don’t think the LSU or Georgia positions are going to be open. Miles might get canned, but if he does I expect Mullen, Mike Stoops, and Pelini to be the names floated. Recently, LSU has been hiring hot name HCs at mid-level programs, and I can’t see them going for a coordinator now. They need a guy who can immediately compete with Saban and the Auburn Board of Trustees. If Mullen moves on then I think Smart replaces him at MSU. Has there been any word on Brian Kelly at Notre Dame? That guy can be fired for cause, right?

I think Patterson winds up at the U; Michigan throws enough money at Harbaugh that he just can’t refuse and I too think Rich Rod ends up at Colorado. I think Richt survives and Kirby Smart ends up taking a position no one saw coming – maybe replacing Harbaugh at Stanford.

i have a buddy at CU and i tell him daily to start campaigning for Leach. thatd be an awesome fit for CU i think. and i do like the pirate. may be a parrothead thing. it’d be interesting to see how he would do at the U.
speaking of which- i think June Jones would be legit for the U. build an identity based on overconfidence and hawaiian shirts.

i think Smart could go somewhere.
I pray Muschamp doesnt.
I hope GD does.
i hope DeRuyter does.
and i hope fecal matter is dumped all over the ou coach’s offices.

I fear Tman is right. Personnel evaluations don’t suddenly begin on the Monday 4 days after you are humiliated by your rival on your own field. If Belmont was going to make any substantive changes, they would have been made by now.

by ransomstoddard on Nov 28, 2010 7:52 AM CST reply actions

Does anyone really believe Mack does know what needs to be done? Waiting until Monday is his way of being cool to a good friend of some 30 years and conducting business behind closed doors – the way it should be done.

I’ll admit I’m wrong if no changes come down but this is just more class from a class act and I like it.

/end rant.

Any thoughts on the OSU OC desirability or mobility after last night’s loss? Not that the int’s were called plays….

by fbomb on Nov 28, 2010 9:08 AM CST reply actions

Randy Shannon is a class act and deserves better. I’m sure he’ll resurface somewhere.

He may be a class act but he’s a terrible coach. They lost by 28 points at home to an FSU team with a similar amount of talent because Shannon was out-coached that badly. FSU, by the way, is in the first year of their rebuilding project, while this was year four of Shannon’s tenure. FSU has been absolutely hammering Miami in recruiting since Fisher took over. It goes without saying that Florida was killing them as well. S. FLA recruits are deserting the U in droves.

Shannon did keep Miami’s players off of the police ledger (an amazing feat), but for a school that has won five MNC in the past 30 years, it’s reasonable to expect to be better than this.

The U is working on a dream team kind of coaching staff. Though unsolicited, here’s the list I’m sending to Donna Sha-Na-Na…

Head Coach – Jimmy “let’s talk about the size of my” Johnson
Recruiting coordinator – Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell (just keeping it real)
OC – Bernie “Go for Broke” Kosar (he needs the job)
QB coach – “Cousin” Vinny Testaverde (playbook includes only primary colors)
RB coach – Waiting for Frank Gore to retire
WR coach – Michael “King of the Athletics Dorm” Irvin (also responsible for curfew enforcement)
DC – The Rock (has coaching experience – see IMDB)
DL – Warren Sapp (gotta get that image of him dancing out of short-term memory)
LB – The Boz (similar philosophies, but cross-pollination is a good thing)
DB – None (sends message that opposing QBs aren’t going to have time to throw ball into secondary)
S&C – Ramon Scruggs
Academic Counselor – puh-leeze

This strategy is all about embracing tradition and accepting one’s culture for what it is.

Based on what Harbaugh has told his current commitments for 2011, he’s not going anywhere, at least not this offseason. Further, the blue-bloods and powers that be there at Michigan aren’t likely to forgive him anytime soon for the flamethrower he took to the program after he was passed over last time. An offer would fly in the face of the deep-seated sentiments about Harbaugh that currently exist there in Ann Arbor.

This is exactly what I thought when I heard this news, reinforced by the AD’s comments.

Shannon was paid only $900,000 at Maimi. Also, with one exception, his assistants are paid virtual minimum wage. The school has DII facilities, no decent practice area, no on-campus stadium, an unreliable fan base, etc. Now, with FIU and USF there is more competition for players. Regardless of who they hire, they are not going back to the glory days. Aside from being in a weak conference, it is not that great a job. The really good coaches are not going to be breaking down the doors to apply. I think Leach might be a decent fit there.

by panhandle2 on Nov 28, 2010 2:11 PM CST reply actions

Would Mack Brown have a job at Texas if he had a four year run like Shannon’s (elite graduation rate, no arrests, 28-22 record)?

I would hope not. Granted, Miami doesn’t have anywhere near the resources Texas has, but it’s a bit silly to cast stones at them for caring about their football team’s on-field performance. They’re not Duke.

by bigdukesix on Nov 28, 2010 2:17 PM CST reply actions

Its never been Mack’s style to do something impulsively and emotionally. He is going to let many of these coaches who have been with him many years bow-out with some dignity by “retiring” at the banquet, where he will introduce their replacements as Jesus has said, rather than knee-jerk firing them hours after the season ends.

What gives me concern is GD stating he intends to coach next year, which would imply he does not intend to be allowed to “retire” but rather force Mack or the University to fire him. I, along with I know many others, have always speculated on whether GD was this bitter, sinister coordinator or just a re-tard — I think how his (hopeful) reign of incompetence comes to an end will finally illuminate his true character – whether class or c*nt. I’m more and more suspecting the latter.

Attempts were made after the WSU fiasco in the Holiday Bowl in 2003 to move GDGD to a desk job in Bellmont. He wouldn’t go then either, so this is not new ground being plowed.

GDGD doesn’t think he’s part of the problem. And why would he, since he’s fucking clueless?

by Blueshorn on Nov 28, 2010 2:50 PM CST reply actions

Everything I hear out here – which ain’t all that much because people in the Bay Area aren’t really college football fans – says Harbaugh’s next stop is back to the pros. Wild card of course could be UM – which I thought had been pretty thoroughly debunked for a couple of reasons – but that rumor seems to be picking up momentum.

If Harbaugh was inclined for the college game I would have to think he’d be ripe for picking. Stanford downsized their stadium by over 20k seats and still can’t fill it. Just a shame. That being said, Harbaugh is without question his own man, and I’m not sure how he’d respond to the attention and second-guessing that comes with the Texas job.

C’mon man. Let it play out. No need to kick a guy while he’s down.

My take on the GD saga: He acts and looks too comfortable at the Monday pressers. He has already signed up for the transition plan. Mack went to the mattresses for his friend to get him a Wheel of Fortune package in exchange for a “sacrificial lamb” role. No bother. The ink on his walking papers is very dry and he could not be more pleased with the Bellmont package offered. Hell, he may have some small annuity lined up as part of the ESPN/ BevoTV deal.
